App Devs: Mangler Needs help with their Open Source Ventrilo App for Android - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Mangler (the ventrilo client for linux) its self is open source, and their work so far on the android version is also open source.
They've gotten their libraries and major dependencies compiled in the NDK, but they don't have any java programmers to write the app. If you or anyone you know could help out please feel free to do so.
I don't know much java myself. However I would love to have Ventrilo on my Android phone.
SVN for android version here: http://svn.mangler.org/mangler/branches/android/
IRC is irc.freenode.net in #mangler you can usually catch the mangler devs there.

Glad to see someone bring this forward to our awesome devs! I was looking all over for a ventrilo client for Android as I play WoW on my laptop and it all chokes when I try to use ventrilo as well.
I volunteer myself for any and all testing purposes as I can't contribute codewise
Will be watching this thread closely...

I'd be interested in this too. It has 'cool factor' written all over it. In a geeky kinda way of course.

Useless post...helps to read everything..sorry

Thread moved to Android General since you are simply requesting something and it isn't something that is device specific.

Ah, I actually posted another thread in that forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679717&highlight=ventrilo
So you might want to remove it
I probably got a little overzealous

Android Rom Tool

Hello everyone,
I'm not new to this forum, i have used it for many years now. Yet i have never made any contribution to the community.
I was fiddling with my G1 again when i found out my rom folder was a complete mess filled with update.zip packages, roms i didn't even know i downloaded. So i though, hey lets develop an application to manage all my roms and radio's with a quick button to upload a rom or radio to my g1.
Something like this:
Sorry i could not post a link, it's restricted. My account is still blocked for that. Admin??
I wonder if anyone would be interested in such an application? And if you are interested could you come up with suggestions to make it better/ help me debugging (i'm a student, i don't have a lot of spare time).
If anyone is interested i will seriously think about further developing this app,
it's now in pre-pre-alpha stage or so .
Greetings from holland.

First off, I am not sure if this is in the right section...perhaps putting it under General might be a better option, as it does not have to do specifically with developing a ROM.
Secondly, the idea seems promising. I am not fluent with ADB, but if you can flash roms with it (IE: boot the phone into recovery, and use adb to flash the rom), then yeah, I think it would be a great idea. And again, depending on what ADB can do, haev it control nandroid/bart as well for backing up and restoring. I know ADB has the shell command, so if you can use stdin/stdout to read/write to that shell prompt, it would be feasible.
But that is forcing every user to go ahead and keep a db of the ROMs they download...perhaps using an external host to manage the images (keep a listing, changelogs, etc) of the individual roms would be an idea...then you can have the application pull roms directly from that repo. This, of course, would require you to manage the remote repository and keep it up to date.
Thats my $0.02

Thats why I said "I'm not sure"...I stand corrected though.
If we want to get technical, this is Htc Dream (G1) Android Development. If we want to be nitpicky this should be in Android development unless it is only for the Dream (G1) and will not work for any other Android phone, which I doubt. But who's being nitpicky anyway?

First off, I love the last line of your signature...classic
I just know that the mods and certain 'Senior Members' like to trash talk about threads in the wrong section, rather than simply stating that it would be more appropriate elsewhere. I was just trying to stop the bashing before it started, heh.
This thread is getting sidetracked though. I do think that the idea is a good one, whether it be strictly for G1, or across the board for all Android devices.
Sorry...
Sorry for posting this in the wrong section, i thought it should be in this section becouse it involves rom's.
Putting up a rom repo, would involve PHP and Mysql(a large one, saving all roms and radio's).
I would be very interested starting this project. I could use some help however. I don't mind building such a repo, but the content should be community managed.
I think android is going to be the mobile future so building such a repo would pay off since we're getting more and more rom's. Ill experiment with php and mysql tonight. I don't have a host, i run it locally.
Maybe someone with mysql/ bandwith to spare?
greetings

It wouldn't necessarily have to be done with MySQL/SQLite/etc...XML would work just as well, but can be a bit more tricky to manage. SQL probably would be the better option now that I think about it.
This idea would have 2 parts to it then, correct? The backend (database hosted online somewhere), and the frontend for the user desktop.
As far as the bandwidth required, there are plenty of places on the net that are geared towards hosting of open source projects...perhaps you could use one of their offerings.
The idea first involved a client managed application only. However the idea in the other post about a web based repo liked me better . Ill try to develop a simple web application to add rom's,track changes. I will try to put a test application online tomorrow.
I hope this repo will be used and managed. I like this forum very much and the community could not live without it. This repo would absolutely be and addition to xda!
Using the repo, you could view all available rom's, installation instructions, track changes.
Check the thread tomorrow. Ill try to upload an example
Have a nice day

I think anything is better than what we have now: Threads scattered all over the place with new ROMs getting posted. We need something more centralized.

I've put together a quick php, mysql script on a temporary host. It's not possible to add roms. But you can view rom information in an organized way.
This is just an example of what is possible. Never mind the layout.
Its just a quick preview.

The one thing to think about with this is when you allw people to add/update/delete their roms. You will have to have some sort of permission system in place that would prevent UserA from deleting a ROM that was created and uploaded by UserB.
Also, this creates another login/password that the rom creators need to remember.
Yeah i thougt about that, unfortunatly we live in a world where you can't trust people. So yes i need to build an user auth system
This was just preview
I'm going to bed now, ill be working on it tomorrow

I like to help
well I am just putting a new linux server online in the next day or so
toss one of my google adds on the page and you can host it there
and as space requirements grow I can add more np
it would at ther very least get it hosted so you guys can get it off the ground
by the way I have been lurking around here for months
some of the stuff you guys have done is truely sweet my phone
will never be the say again unless rogers has its way
Hello guys,
I've been working very hard on the repo and i'm glad to announce that the admin part is allmost fully finished!!

Thank you for your reply!!!!
i hope your host can run php, and mysql. I use the mysql to upload foto's and roms are saved to the server harddisk. Will this be possible?
Thanks in advance for helping get this project off the ground !!

If I may make a suggestion: When you are working on the frontend (what the users (not devs) will see, code it using proper XHTML standards, and utilize classes from within your CSS. The reason I say that is I would be willing to make a desktop application that would scrape your webpage at load, and obtain the ROM categories, rom information, download links, etc, and the user would then be able to simply choose a ROM from the application, which in turn would download it, and create a nandroid backup of the phone, move the ROM over, and flash it, without any user interaction. (thats assuming I can work out a few of the troubles I am running into with ADB and Fastboot)

You may want to partner with the guy who built Droid Explorer. This sounds like a natural extension to that tool (if it's not already baked in). I know you can push things like APKs to the phone from Droid Explorer.

Do we know who it was that created Droid Explorer? I would love to be able to improve upon what he has already done.

Where to start?

I have experience with a lot of embedded devices and software and am interested in getting involved with Android modding. I'm just looking for some good documentation (if it exists) on the basics or even more advanced details. Are there any good resources that go over the architecture of Android and what have you?
I apologize if this is a repost or a common question, but I tried searching but couldn't find anything similar.
+1
Too short. Huh. Well, me too.
Well looks like I'm just going to have to dive head first into the source code lol.
I've only just begun looking at android app development myself, but I can recommend looking at the android notepad tutorial (should be among the first hits on google). Ti's a very basic tutorial but at least it introduces you to some android concepts.
Other than that, there are a few books around that you could take a look at, and ofc the all-mighty internet has virtually endless resources.
Happy coding!
It's best to have a good working knowledge of the Linux operating system / command line as well as a good understanding of Java.
Start with http://developer.android.com or www.helloandroid.com to familiarize yourself with Android's structure.
From there, check out http://source.android.com to get more into the source code and Android framework.
Google gives you pretty much everything you need.

Hello fellow Newbie! (this is my first ever post on xda!)
If you go to hackaday website there is a four-part tutorial. Sorry I could not post links:
"To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed."
Hope you enjoy these (if you find them), and find them useful! Also, keep an eye out for part 5!

I am a software/web developer and I have the Android SDK, Eclipse, Visual Studio 2008 and a number of other tools on my dev box. I love coding in C# but I can do Java and some other stuff too. I just got Eclipse (Helios) setup with the ADT plugin and I am messing around with the emulator. So this is basically what it used for testing/debugging etc. or is there something better? I have my first little app up and running in the VAD emulator. I found out that you need Eclipse 3.5 (not 3.6) and the JRE 1.6 for everything to be happy. Now where to go from here....

You can either use the Emulator or a physical device for debugging (granted the device has usb debugging enabled). I would just look over samples and try to make more complicated application from here, it seems like you have all the prep work done.
Ok here's a good one...when I use the keyboard in the emulator I get Japanese characters instead of English even though I have all the settings I can think of set to US English. Anyone know how to change that?

How to make an app?

I'm putting my theming project aside for now and get onto creating an app that I've always wanted to create that I do not see ANYWHERE in the market, forums, android websites, etc.
I've been reading and reading and reading different threads, instructions, etc. But no clue where to start. I've been reading on App Inventor but realized that it is very limited and I have my high doubts that App Inventor will not be able to achieve what I have in mind to make.
I've got the latest SDK and AVD Manager, JDK, Java, and have been using my emulator to test edited APKs. I'm pretty sure I'll be using my emulator to see how my app progress is coming along and see possible FCs and other issues and correct them as well as adding more to the app to make it even better.
But right now I'm stuck at where to begin here. Right when I was about to create this thread, I was making the name of the Title of this thread and was given threads relating to my title name and saw one thread that was sort of mentioning what I'm asking here.
I read the link provided in that thread ( http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html ) and got some clues but just not enough to get me started here. I just need that push to get me going and eventually push it out to the market and make some money as a side project and learn from that and possibly make more useful apps. I cannot disclose my ideas here because then someone else (who has experience making apps) could take those ideas from me and go make it.
Is anyone willing to work with me here to get me started? I've helped countless people so it would be nice for a change for someone to help me out here.
There are so much Android development books on the market that I suggest to start with one of them. It's the best way to get some knowledge of the design principles used by the Android development framework.
Another method is to start with some examples found on the web. Just search for Android examples or something like that and you get tons of links
Another method is just to create something, get stuck and try to search for a solution (the most pragmatic method )
Yeah I know. That's why I'm constantly researching. I'm seeing some similarities between Java coding and building scripts in IRC (which I used to do, nothing big, just really small stuff). But my main problem is knowing what exactly are the main tools I need. I've had Eclipse for awhile but never used it. It has a lot of stuff in it and I get lost after a couple executions.
I'm just anxious to get started somewhere and get the momentum rolling for starters.

Yeah, a good book (english) would be great. Can anyone recommend one?
You don't have to buy books but they do contain a lot more info in one book and would be better to have than trying to scour the internet and pull a bunch of infos together and try to put it together to understand step by step on how to get started and everything else.
Here's a link to a lot of android development books:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...pment&sprefix=android+application+development
Here's a link to some more info to getting started that is also useful:
http://developer.android.com/guide/basics/what-is-android.html
You may also need to get a Java coding book to help you put codes together properly and understand what each coding does, and tweaking them to work better.
Here's the link to Java coding for Android stuff for beginners:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...x=java+for+dummies&rh=n:283155,k:android+java
I just bought 2 books for Android application development and looking around for a good Java coding for beginners.

I think any java book will do, as long as it covers the principles of object oriented design and the data structures used by Java. You don't need any info about GUI programming in Java because that's all covered by the Android application framework.
The best Java books are the ones written by James Gosling et al, the designers of Java. But that may also be over the top for Android application development. Just some basic Java will do to get you started. The algorithms needed for basic apps aren't that complex.
App Inventor is a great tool to develop your android app. It simplifies the development and the editor is very intuitive.

[IDEA] Cloud computer app for android platform

I know this has probably been though about before, but I'm serious about this... I have an idea for an application that can be used for anyone needing a computer work environment accessible on their mobile android device, whether it be your phone or tablet.
I would give more details, but people could steal it like no ones business!
Therefore, I am creating a website that will allow developers and coders to get together and help build this wonderful idea. I will edit this post when I have created it.
Any questions? Please feel free to ask below!

[DEVELOPERS NEEDED] Building an application (more details here)

If you have iFunny, you're most likely annoyed or tired by the new update...
So, without further adew, I have an idea that could become a top competitor against iFunny. In fact, I can't tell you many details about this application until I get the first (Alpha) version of this application up and running, so I can get the copyrights of it!
THIS IS NOT A HOMEBREW PROJECT.
This may just be an idea at first, but I am already getting the documents ready to copyright this, and I'm already buying the domain/website for it!
So, with the help of some android developers, we will be competing against iFunny in no time!
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask or converse freely below! Or, if you are serious about being a developer for my organization, feel free to Skype or Kik me at: dsman444

You seem like you know quite a big deal about android application development, could you be handy with that as well? I mean, sure, I would love for you to test with several different versions of android. But the development team doesn't even have an alpha version of the application available yet.
The main objective first, is to develop the application. I have all of the ideas and portfolio for the application ready. All we have to do now is create it. Could you be of any assistance with developing?
