First Else GUI - G1 Android Development

Has anyone here seen this phone?
ww.youtube.com/watch?v=PhKxpYRip18
Pretty awesome GUI. Would it be at all possible for someone to mimic it's interface on an android phone? Even if it were like say, a home replacement app?
The idea behind the interface is pretty cool, but this phone leaves something to be desired.

the zooom control looks like 100times better than pinch to zoom
feels more like the android cut thing for setting images... or like zoom on andwobble
but no big news.
don't fancy the ui. I can use my android phone single handedly just great
And I would miss kinetic scroling... If they don't include it, they are nuts
At 5:44 she actually did what I would fear the most - release her thumb too early, starting the wrong app
plus the phone is still to lame for everyday use...
But design looks very nice. and the idea is based on minority report xD

Yeah, I've posted about this phone in a few threads (X10). It looks prety tight. Hasn't been released yet. I'm gonna get one just to have it, when it comes out. Should be easy to port to android phones.
But I'm getting THIS one in a couple of months.

nice to hear someone saying that
i have also known the first else for ... a long time? and always liked the gui. would be nice to have that for my android phone
i just noticed the first else device looks kind of like a complete black, even slightly flatter (backside) iphone 4g xD

Is that Apples new design this year? (The flat gray color, no more shiny chrome)? And also no more roundness? (How the bezel is like flat going to the top and bottom)

It certainly presents some interesting concepts, especially with one thumb use.
However I don't see their entire OS being a success in the near future.

What is Your Favorite Captivate Feature?

I thought I'd start a thread to see what people's favorite features of the Captivate are. Not looking for things like "it's not an iPhone" but more of something like...
My favorite feature is the Panorama setting in the camera. I think it's awesome how you can sweep right to left, left to right, up and down, down and up and it will stitch together a panoramic photo instantly, just like that. I think that's by far my favorite feature.
Others? What do you love about the Captivate?
It's not an iphone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
lol... I should have expected that.
Ok, so I'm totally sold on WinMo 6.5 and this is my first Android device. My gaming rig at home is 2k8R2, but virtually every other system I own runs Linux (8 at home counting VMs). I absolutely love Linux, but letting go of WinMo has been difficult - especially with the great people in those part of the forum. But more and more are moving to Android. So that's where I'm coming from on this.
0) Speed. It's wayyy faster than my 528 Mhz Touch Pro.
1) The screen. It's about 90% the size of the iPhone itself. Resolution is ok, but could be better.
2) Android. The ability to modify anything that I choose to is awesome.
3) It's not an iPhone. I FREAKING *HATE* Apple with a passion.
4) Proximity and light sensor. I expect this feature, but I also really like it.
5) 16 GB of internal memory. That's sweet, until you brick your phone and then Samsung has all of your personal data from TiBu and SMS backups. Dammit.
Things I hate:
0) It appears the GPS issues are mainly antenna-related. There have been hundreds of smartphones with GPS. How hard is it to learn from others' mistakes? This is what you do.
1) Froyo is taking way too long. It's been out for 5 months. Why do we not ALREADY have it?? (Officially...)
2) Devices are shipping with the 3-button combo broken. QA really dropped the ball on that. FAIL.
3) No flash on the back for the camera. Come on, it's one LED.
4) USB is on the top. This is totally personal, but on every other device I've had (mostly HTC), the connector is on the bottom. This is just weird.
5) This is way out of the ballpark, and a complaint about Android itself. The only thing that I dislike almost as much as Apple is Java. Yeah, we can discuss this all day, but I'll still hate Java. I'm uneasy with everything (dex files/executables) being Java based. I understand why they did it that way, and I'm glad they did something besides straight-up Java (that would make the phone unusable), but I'd prefer actual Linux binaries to run on these devices. I'm not sure why they did not do that, so if someone wants to continue this discussion, PM me and maybe we'll open another thread. I'd really like to understand more about this.
All-in-all, I really like this phone.
I love how the battery runs out of juice after about 10-12 hours and doesnt even make it through one business day. I love that!!
GPS. Because it gives so many people a reason to be unhappy. And, as I've said before, some people aren't happy unless they're unhappy. So now they're happy. And that's good.
The screen and Android.
Everything I hated about iPhone has been tended to and all of what i loved about the iPhone is intact.
Don't have to conserve power any more or carry a charger or buy a "juice case" ......Battery is replaceable on the fly.
Removable storage. No need for Syncing SW
Samsungs battery charger/phone stand is a great accessory to have....http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Batte...UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1287164024&sr=8-3-catcorr
These are all going to be comparisons to the iPhone so deal with it.. it's what I came from. It's not an "I hate iPhone" just a comparison because I loved the device when I had it.
I love the customizations that can be done with the phone. From custom ROMS, to tweaking the Icons, and I can do with it what I want to. With an iPhone I was VERY limited by what i can do.
Notification bar - I hated the bubble popup while i was in the middle of doing something else with the phone.
Speed - the phone is 100000000 times faster than my old iPhone 3G.
The ability to backup what I want to - contacts, data, applications - I can back it up. I was at the whim of Apple and its proprietary iTunes before.
The screen is gorgeous - Every thing pops and I think it's on par with the "uber iPhone 4 retina screen". It might not be as crisp or sharp as it.. but it is nice nonetheless.
The Ugly:
I hate the fact that it can be easily killed - but not necessarily bricked. One wrong move and *poof* have to restore the device and start all over again.
The battery life due to the screen being a HUGE battery hog. I am able to get 12-16hrs out of one charge. But I feel as if I have to restrain my phone usage to prolong battery life from the device.
GPS is still flaky at best. Although Samsung states this is a "software" issue - too man Captivate owners have had too many issues with it. Thankfully I don't use it all that often being a casual phone dood (i.e. I don't travel alot, and mainly use it for txt, calls, email, xda, etc...)
Samsung/ATT support by not having the phone truly ready for the public. They have finally released their official 2.2 Froyo to Europe - which means we might see it by December.
Having to had to install a tweaked custom ROM on a device that should have been working from the start.
Java - I personally cannot stand Java. I think it is slow, bloated, bulky, easily exploited, and is not a great programming language. I liken it to Visual Basic in the Linux world. But then again.. the phone could have been programmed in all C, Perl, or C++ only. *eek*. Sure it would have been screaming fast, but who would be programming for it?
Overall I have a feature rich, fast phone that is about 90% functional. As a consumer it is disappointing that my first foray into the Android world had to be so difficult. But thanks to XDA and the people taking the time to make this device work - its been completely worth it.!
I've used everything so far as mobile OSes go. WinMo 6.5, iOS, and now Android. I have to say, Android is by far the best I've used to date.
The things I love about this phone:
The screen is absolutely amazing. I go back and forth between my phone and my iTouch for apps and there's just no comparison. The SAMOLED screen blows Apple's technology out of the water for clarity and color.
We actually have real multi-tasking, not that lame app-switching-loading-an-app-from-memory that Apple calls multi-tasking in iOS4.
It's speed. I never thought I'd get a smartphone with a 1Ghz CPU in it, let alone a standalone GPU capable of 70+ fps in OpenGL. That's just insane. I can still remember using my Blackjack1 with its 200Mhz OMap CPU that we could overclock to a blistering 312Mhz!
The notification bar and the toast notifications. It's nice to be able to continue using an app without getting a popup notification that deletes everything you were working on or pushes your app to the background.
The seemingly limit possibilities of Android. It seems like you can edit just about anything on this phone. While theming the phone could probably be easier, (I wish there was something more like Winterboard for Android) the ability has always been there and there wasn't a need for something like a jailbreak to get there.
And I'm just going to group these last ones into on big category. The camera, the accelerometer, the 16GB of built in storage, the style (especially the nice carbon fiber patterned battery door), and it's lightweight and comfortable design.
I like USB on top. I can charge my phone right side up in my cup holder.

Ahh, that's the one thing I don't like. I drive an '08 Ford Focus with a manual trans. The cup holders are literally right behind the gear lever and when I put the phone in the cup holder, I'm constantly hitting it the cable whenever I go to shift. I really need to make some sort of dock for the car...

I love the design and feel. Metal back, corners that make it look different than an iPhone, and the perfect size. 4" is the perfect screen size, perfect.
I was contract free and could get any phone on any carrier and I thought the look, feel, size, etc of the Captivate was the best. 3.5" really too small. 3.7" close...but still not really as nice as 4" for web and games. 4.3" I was holding a damn frozen waffle to my ear...just too big.
The only real negative I have after the Cog 2.2 update (no more lag, faster, better gps, etc) is the battery sucking power of the screen. It is quite manageable with things like dark backgrounds and reduced brightness. However, there is a definite tradeoff on the screen. Personally I like the contrast ratio, colors, etc, better than the iphone4 screen's slightly higher rez. However on bright apps, the battery does take a hit. Battery in all other areas (3G talk, etc) as good as the best out there.
The thing I like the most is the look of the phone, its not squarr, it has really nice curves to it. To me it seems the cappy is the best looking phone around, all my friends are jelous that I got this phone even my friend, that has the iphone 4 lol! Second things is the screen its very clear in,sunlight. When I had the iphone I couldnt see a thing with this phone I can still see everything even in direct sun light. The snappiness of the phone is awesomee to, unlike some other phones like desire it doesnt lag at all!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I like the battery cover, and the phone's design in general :3
WoW..what is my favorite thing...more than just 1 thing for me too...Everything so far. The looks..the feel..the size of the screen..The clarity and detail I get when watching a HD movie on it that I loaded.Just being able to watch a HD movie I loaded on it. The ease of typing a message or making a phone call. The responsiveness of the screen. BTW..I have no lag and am running it stock with the Jf6 rom (is that right ?) Having a great camera helps too...All in all I am well pleased with mine and have but 2 complaints... the gps issue..and the weak usb socket...I prefer the GPS to work properly of course, and the usb socket is what it is and I'll just have to be careful on inserting the plug..but neither were my primary reason for buying this phone..I bought it for all the other reasons I already listed. My wife loves her too..I have to say I've changed my mind about the new Iphone 4's though..they are pretty nice too since bought my sons got them when my wife and myself got our Captivates a couple days ago..They are good solid phones from what I can see..some what limited to what is on them..but otherwise good solid phones..Even my boys watched in awe when I fired up the Transformer movie to show them this morning on mine..but not enough so to exchange them for what we have...They are firmly entrenched in the apple orchard..and have been since the i-pods came out..

What's not to love? Such sheer beauty and potential that I just see quirks where many see problems.

New UI idea

Has anyone seen the avaya flare UI? It looks great, I would like to see some of this on the EVO. I have not problem holding the device in landscape.
I dont know the first thing about programing the UI but I would be interested in learning and getting something off the ground with assistance.
Thanks.
its decent looking
Sure is, I like the two side scrollings affects and the status bar. FB, T, and other makes it handy to see what going on.
not bad at all. i could imagine something like this on wp7.

Anyone else not too impressed with ICS 4.0?

I was hoping to be blown away by the feature list, or even just a huge change from gingerbread in the form of an amazing new feature. But To me, it just seems like a revamp to the UI and a general polish. It sorta left me.. disappointed. Maybe I was just expecting too much, maybe its too deep in the mobile OS game for groundbreaking features to constantly be churned out. Who knows.. I just wasnt really feeling the excitement about NFC, don't see my self rubbing my phone with my buddies to get things done, or using it to make payments when I have a perfectly fine debit card i dont mind getting a few scratches on. Dont be fooled, I may have a iPhone 4s right now, but its only because I have an android tablet and I was under the assumption that Nexus would be amazing and ICS would be equally on par, and I was going to sell the 4s to gain a profit and buy the Nexus. But after the unveiling of both, I'm not sure anymore if its on par with iOS5 for the time being, which is growing on me. What are your thoughts?
inb4 anti-apple fanboys
yeah, it was a "meh" experience for me too, the virtual buttons is nothing new, they just took more or less honeycomb and put it on a phone
Well, I didn't expect much - they said early that it will be HC for phones. But I think we must look inside first. I hope the source code will be released. I wonder how the browser will change (will it be closer to Chrome).

I believe the source code was already leaked. I thought ICS overall was the best part of the whole presentation. The phone itself 10/10 design wise, but the hardware isn't on par for me... not for the next 2 years anyway.
I was surprised a little that there was no sd card slot added, which is what everyone complained about since the beginning! I will need to get my grubby hands on ICS before I can completely judge it, but just a underwhelming tone I took away from the whole ordeal. On the other hand, I'm still excited about the Galaxy Note! As long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
Looks like its a bigger update for phones than tablets really, I can't see much that the Motorola Xoom I had for a while couldn't do on 3.2, although like I said I guess a lot of the Honeycomb functionality will make its way in now to phones.

This is my thoughts exactly. I see the note as a far superior device to the nexus. Once it gets ICS then it will blow the galaxy nexus away.

I'm also curios about the browser. It seems it will support sync bookmarks from Chrome. That will be great if so. Still cannot find any video/post to introduce the browser in Android 4.0.
From what I've seen of it, it looks excellent. It doesn't look WP7 excellent. But it appears to have some Honeycomb touches.
I'm very impressed by ice cream, seems like a great improvement.
But it seems like most comments in this thread is about Galaxy Nexus, it didn't impress me very much except for the screen.
I am impressed!
- no more fragmentation, same app on phone and tablet
- HW accelerated ui
- integrated data usage control app
- browser engine is closer to webkit sources and have HC bookmark sync
- nice task manager, swipe and close app
- notification LED
- hi res contacts photo sync ?
I am worried about:
- no SD CARD in Nexus phone. i hope that the OS support the extention. EDIT: It has support - i've installed SDK
- on screen hw buttons, not my type
- no word about tethering, i hope is still present
- no word about open source it ?!?!?
- i hope face unlock does not increase even more the "wake up lag"
- no pen API - my next phone will be SG Note, i hope. EDIT: It has, as pointed by jeandujardin01

I dont know what you guys were expecting.
I guess if your coming from WP7 or Android Tablet the UI changes and people app is ho hum. IOS and Android phone users should all be blown away.
Alot of the nagging annoyances are (seemingly) gone...more gestures in the UI , Full screen high res caller id , uniformity in copy/paste , Easier customization , Data management , screen cap etc....just a slew of things you no longer need 3rd party apps for.
For contacts and social aspects it blows away iOS and is a step up from WP7 ((from what I see)).
The hardware I wasnt crazy about. Only the HD screen +notification light was appealing.
Android OS was already ahead of everyone in terms of feature by a good margin. iOS caught up within arms reach with Siri + notifications. Android 4.0 seemingly does a good job of once again widening that gap.
If WP7 came on better hardware maybe id change my stance. But Android 4.0 is extremely impressive. Only question is the HW acceleration + garbage collection problem finally fixed or is it still lag/choppy filled.
Yeah but, you know, what about the beautiful Roboto font? Doesn't that make it worth the wait for ICS?
I think visual design elements in a GUI should speak for themselves. If you have to say too much about your new font then maybe you've failed. Why is everybody designing 'flat' two-dimensional looking graphics for their GUIs? How about building in more visual customisation out of the box? Want a glosy glassy 3-D look? Sure, just go to settings and customise it from the in-built choice of four or five that we put there for you. Oh wait, we didn't.
Still only a QWERTY keyboard? Still got to go into the 'number/symbol page' to enter basic characters? Can't users just have a wider range of choice for text entry withouth resorting to downloading keyboards from the Market or buying an HTC device?
Face Unlock? In my head that shortens quite nicely to a well known expletive, which is probably what we'll all be saying when it doesn't work first time when we need it too ; ) You know, like, if we're outside, facing south and it's before 11am or something.
Do some of the new features remind people a lot of what certain launchers are doing, not to mention Cyanogen and MIUI ROM features?
Joking aside, I too am kind of dissappointed as you can probably tell. I've been holding off buying a new phone for months now (still on my trusty HD2) and I think I'm going to have to wait a while longer. And don't even get me started on the lack of a microSD card slot in a device with a high res screen, onto which I'm going to load large movies/tv shows that will fill 32 gigs very quickly.
Windows Phone 7 is still a bust for me, and I won't even consider an iPhone until they stick at least 4" screen in it, so I may end up getting a 'proper' Android phone after all, but that's not really a very positive way to go about selecting a device. So many manufacturers release multiple handset designs a year, but how many of us select one based on the least compromises in the handset/OS, rather than 'extra' features it has over and above our basic needs?

Eh, I must say, google is never the one to overhype their software updates and honestly they've yet to be impressive. Microsoft and apple hype their updates up because they can live up to the hype. The only people walking around anticipating the new ICS update is... Well... You guys. IOS and even wp7 hyped their updates because they delivered more than just a definitive Ui change.
snice the SDK has released is it better to start developing for ICS4 already?
Yeah, not impressed at all. What were they thinking with this presentation?
Don't remember who from Google said something like "you'll be amazed at how many new features we added in such a short time".
This made me think of several things we saw this past year like:
-better USB compatibility (HID?) they talked about at the Google I/O -> not a single accessorie
-same Os for tablets and Phones -> were are the tablets?
-HDMI out used to display something like a real desktop on an HD screen like Motorola and some others were trying to make -> a phone without HDMI port?
-unified Os, unified updates? -> nothing discussed
No need to say how much I was disappointed.
But, well, that's overall improvement, just that...
Impressed? We have not had a chance to use it yet?!
All i want from ICS is a HW accelerated UI. People will swear othewise, but Androids UI experience is NOT liquid smooth. It gets frustrating at times
I'm reserving my judgement till I get my hands on it. So far though, I can't say I'm either disappointed or blown away. My device works as I'd like it to for now. The progression goes something like this: keep on stock for as long as I'm able to hold out; unlock the damn bootloader and go crazy with ROMs; anticipate my new device; repeat the insanity. Right now, I'm only at the first step. Maybe I'd be disappointed if the news came while I was at the third.

Blackberry Venice to the rescue?

Hi,
Like many of us, my Photon Q (s) have been getting a bit long in the tooth, although I still believe that we own the most capable Android device with hardware keyboards.
Finally there's apparently a new keyboarded Android on the way;
the Blackberry Venice looks pretty nice. I wonder how expensive it will be. Rumors suggest that it will be available in the November timeframe, and will have 3GB of RAM.
Any thoughts on why one would or wouldn't buy this device? Is there some other newish keyboarded device which I haven't heard of? Frankly I would keep my Photon Q indefinitely, if either (a) there were truly stable custom KitKat ROMs and/or (b) it had just a bit more RAM and/or onboard storage.
This is a nice video which was posted a few days ago.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/18/9352471/blackberry-venice-android-phone-video
looks pretty interesting to me!
lets hope it hits the market soon.
maybe Blackberry's gonna revive this way
That keyboard just looks small, no number row, and I imagine it won't be as comfortable to hold and use keyboard as our style.... but until I have my hands on it, can't really judge, but I think I prefer the landscape type keyboard sliders like PhotonQ. Maybe it's super light and holding it while typing with both thumbs does work somehow, but looks pretty narrow... I dunno...

ph-2 ?

We've been working on a new device to reframe your perspective on mobile. It's now in early testing with our team outside the lab. Look forward to sharing more in the near future! #ProjectGEM pic.twitter.com/BnVy7yM2Kj
https://twitter.com/essential/status/1181734328130252802
It looks cool and unique but I don't get it? Like why would I want to give up screen real estate from left to right and still have the same height? This is going to be a failure of a product for the simple reason it doesn't solve any size issues and has a smaller screen real estate.
However that ui looks promising. Essential should work on a foldable phone that turns into a watch. Just think if you could take the screen they have in those photos, wrap it around your wrist as a watch, and unfold it into a phone that looks like the photos they have...
I think there will be a day where you store your phone on your wrist not your pocket when it's not in use. The technology is almost caught up to implement that and whoever does it first correctly will be the next iPhone or Razr.
Haven't seen it. I love my PH-1, but this... thing? Looks weird, the screen format makes no sense, and the HUGE camera bump on the back is an instant turn-off. I dunno, it could be good, probably too early to tell, but so far, just looking at the prototypes... no.
Here's more from Rubin
https://mobile.twitter.com/Arubin/s...57419.ampproject.net/1910071803120/frame.html
I had the PH-1 and I loved it and I hoped that the new one would be better. But this one is just stupid... (((
The PH1 form factor is possibly the closest to perfect in recent years, IMO. Sure, there could be small improvements, but the screen height and width make it a very 'pocketable' handset--not too tall, like the Pixel2/3XL and a slew of other with only marginally more screen estate.
The PH2? It looks wrong, but perhaps isn't as tall as it seems. The main issue will be how the interface works and I can't quite conceptualise how it will manage to do a whole host of things i use on my phone, not least of which is simply reading print news media--3 words a line is likely to become irritating

Exactly! I absolutely love the PH-1 form-factor. I am not a fan of big phones, and always look for something with a reasonably small screen, but a good resolution. I am also not obsessed with bezels, and the bottom chin actually makes it more convenient for me to handle.

There is a rumor that was semi intentional and I kind of believe it.
I mean YouTube channels are already pointing out Series X: Sex.
The Xbox brand is one of the worst naming schemes of all time. If you search "Xbox" online you might get a Xbox (original), 360, one, or soon the new "Xbox".
Good luck selling that to kids when the average parent won't know the difference between any of them.
The Xbox brand is what they should use in marketing courses as what NOT to do.
