improve ur battery life on ur g1 with an eclair rom [EDIT]... (may work with donut) - G1 Android Development

this solution was found in the nexus one android development in xda. so i dont take credit for this... but it worked on my g1...
have d new cyanogen eclair rom on it,
but i got 16 hrs of battery n still have 50 %.
mild texting and calls, took a 4 min video, uploaded it to youtube, downloaded 5-6 apps, mild surfing, tried the new mozilla fennec browser(lame)
had setcpu min & max 528 mhz.
so... this is good fix!
here is the link to the original thread on xda nexus one page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670999
basically, what u have to do is
go to settings, about phone, battery, battery use, cell standby, tap on cell standby and you will find 'time without signal' (if your phone has been ON for atleast 30 mins). if this is more than 30 %, thats whats draining ur battery.
(see attached pic)
so..
1) Goto dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* (DO NOT press send)
wait a second and you will get the test menu.
2) In the test menu choose 'Phone Information'
3) scroll down and choose on the first drop down -GSM only or cdma only or wcdma only. whatever you choose, wait 5 seconds and look on ur notif bar if u get ur 3g back (or E).
4) Back all the way out.
5) You might want to reboot, but I found the settings worked straight away.
after you reboot, wait like an hour or so and go back to settings, about phone.. blah blah and find 'time without signal'. if it is lower than what u saw before... it worked!!!!
mine was 44% before and after it was 0%
and i used cdma only.
but to round up..
gsm only - best battery, less speed
cdma only - good battery, fastest internet
gsm auto or cmda auto - good battery, fastest internet
try this out guys... c if it works!
and people please dont choose not sure in the poll above right after you try this, wait a day or two and come back to poll.. or it wont hellp other people. xD

-havent tried it on any donut roms...
volunteers r welcome...
-people using droid incredible tried this on and some lost mms sending (they could recieve) in the cdma(prl) only mode.
so whatever mode you choose try sending an mms to somebody or even yourself to make sure u can send and rcieve. if it dont.. just chose another setting or just put if back onto the cdma preffered option.
-this trick does not work after some reboots, so you might have to do this between 3 or 4 reboots. until somebdy finds an app for this..

Using GSM Auto (PRL) I got no network connection at all. GSM only, only gave me Edge. So I changed to WCDMA Only and see how it goes.

yeh i put cdma only

im on gsm prl, and i have hspda

Testing!
changed to GSM auto.... I will let you know how it goes after a couple of days

if its auto, it'll just drain down the battery by switching between edge and 3g..
you should be better off with an 'only' option!

FYI, the OP is in the G2 Hero forum, and he claims to have found it on the CDMA Hero forum, not that it really matters . . .
thanks for copying the tip over here!

Set it to the settings the OP had and since I don't get 3g anyways I wonder how this will affect my phone's battery life.
Thanks!

if u dont get 3g anyways.. ur best bet is gsm only...
u'll get loads of battery

You mean WCDMA only right? CDMA only wouldn't work. Will post later on how it is, along with the OC+UV kernel by pershoot.

i dont get any form of data
ie no edge or 3g
wat shud i make my setting?
thx a lot

Either GSM only OR WCDMA Only, only those two will work. I get no data on GSM Auto.

This is nonsense. You don't need special, secret codes to choose any of these settings. There are 2 much better options:
1. Choose "Use 2G networks only" under your network settings.
2G = GSM!
3G = WCDMA!
I do that if I'm going out for the night and already on a low battery. It works.
2.
One other option is to get "Anycut" form market, make a shortcut for "phone info," then you can choose any setting you want - 3g only, 2g only, evdo, etc. This will have all of the settings available. That seems like a better solution to me than the one posted by the OP.

I may be stating the obvious but for people who want to try it, be prepared to have NO internet connection at all if the 3G coverage is not that great in some areas.

That's only if you choose "3g only" , i.e. "WCMDA only"
otherwise, you can choose 2g only, cdma, evdo, etc. Look at my post above - use anycut from Market. I'm surprised no one has caught this yet. This thread should be closed for confusing people. It's not some new, magical solution. The same solution, in a much easier, more accessible form (home shortcut) has existed for a year and a half...

Been around for a while!!!

Thanks for the dialer tip-in to this part of the framework, but as the above caller said, these options have been built-in for ages: I was goofing around with these in 2008 when my town didn't have T-Mo 3g and I was desperate for more bandwidth! AnyCut is good to call up these settings as the above caller stated, but I prefer the Google app that gives us all this and more!
This used to be wrapped in the all-in-one SDK, but now that the SDK is live/downloaded in segments, I couldn't tell you how to get it again. Thankfully, some devs continue to roll it up in their ROMs. Enjoy
As for the caller who say picking 3g from the settings menu is the same as choosing WCDMA Only, I say WRONG! Picking 2G from the menu is restricting the phone to the GSM/GPRS radio only, whereas unchecking that box fires up both the UMTS/HSPDA (powered by the WCDMA standard) radio for data, while keeping your GSM radio on for calls, texts, etc -- thus the big difference in battery life.
Wikipedia is your friend!
As for the question of which ROM this could work with (could because keeping the radio from switching/searching/sitting idle for no reason may save some battery just as the dude who said selecting just 2G will save battery) . . . I say sure. But does that solve the underlying issue behind Eclair battery usage? I doubt it. Look to setCPU for that, methinks. Anyhow, this app/method should save EVERYONE battery or cost ANYONE battery, depending on how you set it--regardless of ROM--RC19 to Nexus Eclair 2.1. Hell, it'll save battery on an iPhone, if you could do the right kind of sexual favor for Steve Jobs to get him to let you to the source code so it could be installed

I put WCDMA only. Let's see how long it lasts.

...
Just to make this clear...
Why is this in development?

Suggested Hack

As one of many people who are astonished by the amount of battery drained in a day where not much is done (besides push mail) but 90% of my battery is drained in 12 hrs, here's my thought on a program/hack:
Set default network (Edge)
On launch of (program) switch network to (HSDPA)
With the aiblity to add multiple programs (Java (for opera mini), Opera Mobile, IE, Slingplayer, etc...).
The reason? Pushing email as it comes is important, but it doesn't need to suck up my 3G batterylife. I'd switch it to Edge permanently, but it's a hassle switching to 3G (and back) each time I want to run something that really needs the extra speed.
It'd save a TON of battery life.
Thoughts? Anyone capable of doing this?
thx
Robert

I'm very interested in something like this, it would save most all of our batteries! And save me from having to manually switch it off and on all the time.

What about this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=54098&d=1192271410
It's dutythroy_black-3g-comm-manager_.cab.fixed from the Kaiser Cabs thread - might do the trick.
If the one posted last is the same as the one I downloaded a while back (wow a few days is a while back?) then it does work very well. The only thing is. it isnt like the poster asked. It works, but its not automatic. where when connecting using say, IE, Opera, etc it will switch to high speed, and things like downloading weather, or email updates would be regular. Basically app dependant.

True, but I would say that would be pretty impractical because the switching takes quite a while.....
It takes a while either way you do it (the hardware+drivers switch from 2G to 3G slow, not the program). So even if you find an app to do this automatically it will still do it slowly.
yo can always set what network apps use in the connection settings under advanced. Just have your normal email and suxh use the cellular line and then have the other use the "work" connection that is set to "cellular 3G" 10 points to the first person that figures out how to make it work!! I already have it working on my kaiser so I know it does also DanialHero has a great app I forget whats it called might also suit your needs well,
im using the comm manager of durotthy and its works great

Does 3G really make that significant of a difference on battery life? I upgraded from a Wizard and the battery life seems almost the same for me. They both used direct push too.

Not to me.. 3G is a bit more of a battery saver where I am since EDGE is so horrible in signal strength in Central Texas. ROM choice also makes a big difference - the HTC and AT&T ROMs offer much better battery life than most of the cooked ones (i.e., the AKU 0.7 ones, in my case).
I run Directpush with about 30 minutes of calls a day and am at about 65% when I go to bed at night (I charge overnight) and can easily make it from Friday night to Monday morning with the light email load and maybe only 15 minutes of calls over the entire time.
Signal strength makes a BIG difference. That is what makes my office mates jealous since I can get days from the device (the Tilt and then the 8525 before) while they can barely budge 10 hours on their Sprint/Verizon devices.

[Q] I need major HTC Evo Help

I've had my Evo since June. The battery life was NEVER good. I have rooted it since then and currently using Myn's Warm ROM.
I literally have THE WORST BATTERY LIFE!!! I take my phone off the charger and no later than 3 hours its already hooked up to a charger. I have tried downloading programs to help overclock (unclock).. and it's not helping. I've read many different Roms can help.. but i MUST HAVE MY 4G (Rarely on, but when I need it, or want it.. etc..).. also my 4G speeds are horrible!!!
I would greatly appreciate any help from some of the Pro's on this matter!!
Thanks,

First try recalibrating your battery. That should help a lot. If your battery life i still not that great, consider flashing a different kernel. I know that Myn's Warm ROM comes with HTC Stock #10 kernel, so you have to make sure you disable Perflock in SetCPU or underclocking won't do anything.
Also, yes, 4G rapes your battery hard. And also on Myn's ROM, 4G has been known to get "stuck", meaning that even after you turn it off and it says it's off, it's still on even though you're using 3G. You have to reboot after you turn it off. RLS4 Final is out tomorrow though so it should hopefully be fixed.
Also my phone is ALWAYS going to Roaming.. I am a newb when it comes to this.. so hopefully I can figure it out... I would HATE to have to go back to stock Evo

And thanks Product F(RED) for taking the time to leave me that advice.
Sorry Miamiboi. I typed that because I'm sure you just forgot to say it
screen brightness, background apps, the usual suspects. These are the things you need to also look at. Everything Product F(RED) told you to do, you need to try. But all of the apps that people want to keep running, data, screen brightness, bluetooth. These are things that people never think of when it comes to battery life (not saying you don't). I'm guilty of doing it and I'm sure there are many others here also. I don't care how much it does, it's still a phone and is going to have some limitations. Until they figure out a way to put a long lasting battery in a phone, suggestions like Product F(RED) made are just about all you can do. Of course, try turning some stuff off also..lol
Oh yeah, the roaming thing is going to happen in a lot of areas these days. There are so many companies out there these days (some smaller ones per state we dont even know about) that you are going to hit spots where you on another network. I live in Panama City and just driving along the gulf through Destin and other places my phone is roaming on and off all the time. Of course my luck, someone is going to come along, read what I just typed and tell me that I could fix it with a new radio..lol. Actually, I kinda hope that does happen..hehe

What you can do in regards to fixing the roaming issue is go into Settings -> System Updates -> Update PRL (Preferred Roaming List). Sometimes this will give you better signal. And besides, you shouldn't worry about Roaming because Sprint and Verizon have a roaming agreement, so you don't get charged for data or texting. Voice minutes are just pulled from your pool of minutes.
I'm not sure what you mean by WiMax updates. You shouldn't upgrade your WiMax radio because each Evo has a unique key. Flashing a WiMax radio image from the internet overwrites your key with somebody else's and then both of you will lose WiMax access. If you absolutely must try it, make a Nandroid backup using Amon-Ra Recovery. Clockwork doesn't backup your WiMax image.

HTC One S (Helicopter SOLVED)

Hi there!
I just figured out that in "WCDMA Preffered" mode, in call time signal strength reach 16-17 asu makeing screen go crazy, than I simply set "WCDMA Only" and signal strength has stabilized with 12-13 asu or less in call time. The issue dissapear..
You can set it up eighter entering "Test menu" (*#*#3424#*#*) or in "Settings - Mobile Data - Network Mode - (WCDMA Only)
NOTE: The setting persist after reset so you don't need to reapply it every time.
Later edit: My test was made in a high signal area from my carrier. Now I'm testing in a lower signal strenght area (neutral zone) and my asu is 6-7 and this is great.
Enjoy your HTC One S
Soo far the issue gone. Keep this up (vote and say thx)
Hi again, after 3 days testing my theory the issue seems to completely gone. I reactivate long press home button eveything is normal.
Ohh.. just a little thing forgot to mention that doing this you lost 2 lines of signal. No more helicopter but -2 lines cover and probably this ain't so helpfull those with allready low cover in some areas. BUT this seems to be the only way to get rid of this issue.
My final decision!
Edit: Please pin my topic!
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I have tried that but it resets to the default setting when you restart the phone.
EDIT: Seems to stay at that setting now. Will see how it goes.

This issue manifest most often durring calls when gsm signal interact with capacitive sensor. So you can test it very simple by makeing a call even to your free carrier number, put on speaker and tri to browse the web durring call or just play with the menu.. open / close apps..

Its 9 days for me since the issue gives no signs comming back.

Helicopter still happens with the update but not as much.
Hi every one!
I did managed to Unlock / Root / S-OFF my HTC One S, i had some issues with the CWM untill i got a good recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-villec2.img but i still not receive any update from HTC..
Finally the issue is continue to manifest so.. the only thing we can do at this moment is switching to "WCDMA Only" as i sayd before.
This is a hardware issue that i read about .. there are 2 HTC One S models (probably motherboard series) and one of them has this issue.. so do what i did and stop searching for answers, this is the only way without risking of bricking your device or void your warranty searching for a better solution.
Enjoy it as it is or.. buy a new one if you can't live with it the setting !
Could a software update not solve the problem? I thought htc knew about the issue.
If you look at this link it seems htc know about the issue

Been on the phone to HTC and they said it wasn't an issue with this phone and to do a factory reset.
Not very helpful.

I know that.. you'r not the only one going to htc .. they give us the same answer. My solution is the only and best one, we tot nothing to do ..

do you suggest this device for me?

so i'm a bit on budget , and i think that Mi A1 is great for the price , 4GB of ram 64GB expandable storage , good camera quality (not great) , loud speaker (but overall idk about that hissing problem in both speaker and earphone) , so what do you think about this device? should i go ahead and buy it?
Yes do buy it. You wont even notice these things that much in your daily use. Plus its giving an amazing battery life even after oreo update and the portrait mode works like a charm. Faced zero lags, played heavy games with ease. There isn't a better deal out there.
This might sound harsh and rude. Don't worry my intention are that only. Have you googled it or even read few threads in this forum?
Okay now to your question: do you suggest this device for" me"?
Ohhh jeeeezzzz. I don't really know you. Then how would i know whether mi A1 is suitable for your needs.
I am so sorry i couldn't help you
this is a great phone mate and the people moaning about the hissing noise are crazy, its there but only when to sound stops and only for a second or two ans its not even loud, my shield tablet has the same issue but i never noticed untill people moaned about it here lol

Best phone I've ever had
To me it's good. Not much probem. If you're are heavy user you might need to charge twice in a day otherwise it can easily last a day long. I'm using this phone since December 22.
Though camera is not good in low light (well I don't take much photos anyway)

Absolutely. Best budget smartphone on sale, IMO.
Yea its a good device. Value for money..
IMHO it's good bang for the buck! I'm satisfied with my A1
Yes, it is overall a very good package. For me personally it is a great fit and I recommend it. But it is not for everyone!
You should consider three things before you buy:
The headphone hissing is real. If you love music and you listen to it in quiet settings, this phone is not for you until this is fixed. If on the other hand you mostly listen outside (e.g. on the commute) you will not notice the hissing and it is fine.
The camera performance is bad. You will get good shots in daylight, but everything else (especially low light and selfie) is quite below average. You will still get usable photos, but if you love photography or you need nice pictures for work then you should look for another phone.
Android One is a great idea, poorly executed so far. Xiaomi is mainly focused on MIUI and Google is not doing a very good job right now. You will experience bugs and inconveniences that other headsets do not have, where hardware and software come from the same place. If you do not have some patience for bugs and are not able to fix things yourself (e.g. by following tutorials from the forums) you should not get this phone.
I would recommend it and don't agree with the whole 'bad camera' and 'loads of bugs' malarky. The phone performs well and the camera is as good as it gets at this price. Gcam gives better pictures, but we will have to wait until Google supports a double camera or use a port.
My device has been on Oreo since the official update came out and I'm not facing any bugs whatsoever. I feel that a lot of complaints about bugs are basically complaints about features tbat people want and are not there. For my use, the phone is 100% bug free.
The hissing is there on headphones below 32 ohms and you need to take that into account. If you want hiss-free sound at a low volume, you will have to use headphones with an impedance that's at least 32 ohms. Higher is better, though.
thanks all for suggestions , i've bought it , but im facing very bad issue that made me hate it .. the network issues , it keeps changing network and keep loose connection , in my area vodafone is only available via 2G network , i set it to 2G prefered , even the 4636 menu and selecting GSM only fix didn't seem to be useful as it keeps changing every few hours back to the original state again and network getting loose again , does anyone have a fix for that?

Specify your region. Is it india.
For example my TSP is !dea from Maharashtra & Goa circle. Right now i am in Mumbai. And 4g is not good here (!dea).
So i use Vodafone's network.

Was bout to advice u to not buy Mi A1.. But no use telling it now.. Wait for their update.. If u r in luck, the update will solve it or It'll bring even more bugs.. And u will be stuck with a frustrating to use phone.. Mi A1's inhouse developer support is pathetic.. Lets hope for the best with the upcoming oreo update..

What happens when you put 4g preferred?Problem is when 2g is lost, it's lost. Here in Europe I have all 3, so when 4g is lost, 3g is there, and if 3g is lost, it gets 2g, its switching back and forth...it is inconsistent though, but I do have network 99%.
That's terrible, but it's not the fault of the phone...it's operater's fault to provide only 2g network in 2018.
