BlueTooth Keyboards - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

is there some sort of free root app I can use to pair my bluetooth keyboard with my hero

A better question might be, "Is there any bluetooth keyboard driver known to work with a Hero under any ROM at all -- stock 1.5, pre-release, leaked, hacked, or otherwise?" For whatever reason, the CDMA Hero seems to be the one single Android phone that doesn't seem to work with any known bluetooth keyboard driver in any supported mode (SPP or HID).
Literally half the posts at the Android support forum for mymobilegear.com are from Hero owners (at least, the half of the posts from people who've never, ever gotten it to work). It looks like part of the problem is that HTC's SPP support is flaky in all the ROMs and kernels obtained up to this point. It might even be part of the reason why the Hero's official ROM release keeps getting pushed back, considering that proper Bluetooth support is one of the major new features of 2.1. I know, because I spent the weekend trying to track down a working driver known to work with any folding keyboard and a Hero myself.

I have tried a few different boards.
I must say the Hero BT Stack is less than extraordinary. Much less than. Almost so crapy I am lucky to pair a headset with it.

What's strange is that all the problems literally seem to be specific to the CDMA Hero. I haven't seen similar posts from Droid Eris owners. Then again, it might just be that any Verizon customer with the slightest dislike for soft keyboards would have just bought a Droid, while the alternative in Sprintland wasn't quite as appealing.

Android 1.5 on (Sprint) CMDA TP2?

Hi All,
New guy here, and I was thinking about putting Android 1.5 on the Sprint TP2, rather than WM 6.5. (Again, new here, so I'm assuming that, once this HSPL is released for the CMDA, it could work equally well for WM or Android.)
I'm wondering if anyone has tried Android on the TP2 at all and, if so, your thoughts and opinions on this unusual pursuit?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry: CDMA
Not CMDA. I'm a little out of league here.
Sprint is CDMA and it is possible for that to happen. However, you would need an experienced cooker and most guys here are windows mobile guys.
Android is just now starting to fully work on the vogue and has been in the works for quiet some time. The original Touch Pro is still unable to run it. IF the TP2 will see androind, it will be a long time before that happens. Why not wait for the Hero if you really want it?
To be honest, it's because I adore the full qwerty keyboard. I have a really difficult time on touch-screen keys. Additionally, engadget's review of Hero rated its hardware to be a little underpowered for Android. I'm simply sold on the Rhodium.
Your right on it being underpowered. The problem is, porting it to WinMo is hard since they have 2 completely different kernals.

Same reason I want the TP2. Never had WinMo device but that keyboard is the best I've seen on any Smartphone. I'd recommend putting a Sense UI theme on it, that's what I plan to do. Or PointSense Suite.

A new firmware version has reportedly solve most of the issues with sluggishness. More than likely, the sprint version will have this at launch. It should be nice and snapy. The only things keeping me from waiting for this over getting the TP2 are the lack of a keyboard, the screen size/resolution, and the fact that it might not support SERO. It's okay though because I haven't bought it yet and I'll still be in my 30 day time window if I want to return the TP2 and get a Hero.
I'm really wanting Android, but it just hasn't gotten to the specs I want yet. However, I have to say that the Sense UI on it is about the most amazing thing I've ever seen on a phone. I know they say it's coming to WiMo, but I'm just not confident it will be that fast or as good as the android version.
A lot of phones really dont get optimized right away. Its kinda sad cause it brings the value down. Like the Hero is a great phone, but I geuss you need a ROM update for it to be optimized better.
The TP2 is actually extremely optimized right out the box since it has the same specs as the original, but it is a lot faster.

I've been told by several Sprint reps that Everything Plus (the new SERO and the name I was told my SERO plan already has) can be used on the TP2 and that the price will remain the same for me since I'm grandfathered at that price. We'll see what happens when I get it tomorrow and try to activate it with my current plan.
I have android running on my vogue, with is probably the most advanced port currently. We still do not have functional bluetooth, GPS does not have all functionality, and a small number of us (seems to be the cdma folks) have problems with intermittently not having SMS and phone calls show up. It is a great port, but still not ready for heavy everyday use if your phone has to be 100% reliable; many people do use it as there primary OS.
Just trying to say that even on the vogue we are not "there" yet, it is likely very possible on the TP2, but will take modification of the kernel and other files to adapt to your hardware, and won't be perfect.
How about the latest 1.6 donut on TP2? 1.6 supports the display resolution!

it's a lot more than just resolution. dip into the multiple vogue android threads if you are compelled.
Man, I bet getting the memory map would help out the port a lot. Wish HTC would release that.

Are you talking about the $30 500 minute plan or the newer ESRP that is like $10 bucks cheaper than the normal plans? Either way, I know that the TP2 will work on it.
Donut!!
Supports CDMA and the higher resolutions... Please Devs work on this! I will pay money to have it! This will be the perfect combo of phone and OS. I hope this happens.
The biggest issue here is the bootloader. No one, that I am aware of, has modified a bootloader to allow the direct booting of Linux. Also, writing to the flash memory if I remember correctly was the other issue, but please do correct me if I am wrong on this aspect.

I agree COMPLETELY. Having spent some time with an iPhone, I have to say that onscreen keyboards, even in landscape mode, still suck.
Another thing I'd worry about with the Hero... not being able to install programs to a microSD card. I know that is an Android issue, not a Hero issue... if they could fix that, I might be able to get over the low resolution and lack of keyboard.
Where are they talking about putting Sense UI on Winmo 6.5?

HTC said that Sense is on its way to WinMo via TF3d. Nothing new really. If you see the TF3d 2.5/2.6 setups, they resemble it a lot. Obviously, there are things that can't be the same (the way widgets and icons on the "desktop" appear, etc) due to OS limitations, but the core technology is being put into WinMo.
Installing programs to SD card is coming in 1.6. So no worries there.
I totally wish the Touch Pro 2 could run Android. My girlfriend has the HTC g1 and I love the application market. It's really awesome.
The keyboard is the major awesome feature about this phone. I used to have an Instink which is now EXTINCT and I could not deal with the crappy on-screen keyboard. I actually broke it once because I hated it so much. I plan on shooting this one Record it in full glory and post it on youtube for other poor Instinct users.
I would pay for an Android conversion. Totally.

Best android phone (or android "capable" phone)

I'm looking to make the switch from WM to Android, but am thoroughly confused when it comes to android phones already on the market PLUS phones for which there have been successful android ports.
Basically, I would like to know your thoughts on which GSM phone is the best when it comes to running android, in terms of hardware (camera, speed, screen , etc) and overall functionality. I can flash custom ROMS and such, no problem.
I'm also confused on the differences between Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.0. I see new phones (such as the upcoming X10) will have v1.6, so it can't be all that outdated.
Anyway, I can probably research those differences when I have time. Mainly, I would like any opinions on the "best" overall android phone for the money. Again, it will be on a GSM network (AT&T). THANKS!
I fell in love with my Eris on the first day. It has the beautiful Sense UI, a 5mp camera, speaker phone, clear screen, easy navigation button layout, 3.5mm jack, Exchange support, outlook sync, and decent battery life (if you don't have wifi running all the time). As you can see in my signature I have owned a couple of Android phones but am not a total expert. It all depends on the features you need and/or want. Also there is no root for the Eris yet but we will be getting Android 2.x very soon and hopefully root. It sounds like Eris and Droid will get 2.x first at this point in time but things change quickly.

Thanks. I should also note that I must have a GSM phone, as I'm tied to AT&T in the states. But I guess the ERIS is just the CDMA version of the GSM Hero, right?? Thanks again for your thoughts. Keep 'em coming.

The Vogue... hands down.
In fact, they released a flashable version of Android (not just running from SD), but flashing it to NAND wiping the device and exorcising it from M$ WM...
The ports are nearly perfect as well. Fast and very smooth (and stable).
Then I would go for the Hero unless you do what was suggested above to your Vogue. Also the Hero is rooted and there is a sub-forum you can checkout for more info.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention it must be a GSM device (have now edited my first post). I think the HTC Elf has not seen as much success with an android port, unless I'm mistaken.

Thoughts on the HTC Fuze?

Hi, new to HTC phones, been an apple fanboy, but now I'm trying out different phones. I've been eyeing this one, HTC Fuze of late, cause mainly, I don't have a data plan and don't plan on too either. I want to know what owners think about this phone, and I can decide from there.
I mean many youtube comments of reviews over this phone been on both sides, and I mean the phone has been discontinued and people say from all the bugs and problems.
Sway me people on the XDA forums! Are you happy with the choice of this phone and recommend it? Or pull me out of its death trap.
Please comment cause it would really help. Thank you.
Fuze is a pretty good cell phone. It's vga lcd is impressing!!!
I use mine daily for work & leisure with a TAEL ROM, works fine for me I like it.
If you can live without a keyboard it may be worth looking at the Diamond 2.
These devices are good but you do need to more technically capable to get the most from them.
Will be sticking to mine for a while as minimal button & no d-pad devices are ****e in the real world, I have yet to see anyone who can type as fast & error free on a touch keyboard.
I've had my fuze since it came out and i love it. I usually run the latest energy rom on mine though and I didn't like the phone near as much without it. So my advice is if you have a little computer know-how and are willing to read the forums the hardware is just fine and everything is here to make the fuze exactly what you want it to be, well aside from the 1Ghz speed and wvga res of the new gen of phones I'd say go for it
Oh and I second the look at the diamond 2 if you don't need hardware keys cause it has a better blue tooth stack, but no keyboard means I won't buy personally

for around 100 bucks its a really solid phone assuming you only need english load up the latest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536751 energy rom(id suggust cookie 23xxx builds) and all those problems disappear (except camera, still as in reviews)
once you put the new roms on it you would think it was released in late 2009
So does any one know what are the best roms and changes?
it all depends on which phone did you previously used...if you have used low level phone..then definately you will like this......i love this phone.....especially when using energy roms.....as previously i had htc opal.....
I had the HTC Fuze and the problem with these phone with a keyboard is that it will eventually break over time. The phone was also thick and heavy. Oh yeah, the D-pad was practically unusable. I dont know if the Touch Pro shares the same problem as the Fuze. Anyways the main thing that got me to sell the phone was the keyboard breaking.
the board will break????

New to Forums, tethered to AT&T and should I get a Captivate

I am tethered to AT&T and I want to get a replacement for my iPhone 3g. I also will never buy another Apple product until they become more "open" (which will never likely happen).
Looking at the specs the Captivate is far and away the best phone on AT&T and one of the best on the market. However, after doing some research it seems as though the release of this phone has been bug ridden.
From what I can tell there is:
GPS issues
Random shutdowns
Not fully test OTA updates.
Poor support/ambiguous from AT&T Samsung
No Froyo (or info about froyo release)
Possible weak/cheap casing design
On top of all of this there seems to be a bunch of AT&T bloatware that I would immediately get rid of BUT it seems that then the updates won't take.
After writing all this I could be answering my own question. However, generally people only post when something is not working properly.
Should I get a captivate?
If not, are there other AT&T phones coming out soon? The HTC Aria looks weak and I don't like the design of the phone (too small).
Thanks,
JOe K.
P.S. the android community here is amazing. Hence, I really really want an android.
The GPS issues - Yes, you will have problems with the GPS.
Random shutdowns - This never happened to me and is rare.
Not fully test OTA updates - Updates were not tested with rooted / lagfixed phones etc.
Poor support/ambiguous from AT&T Samsung - Yup.
No Froyo (or info about froyo release) - Froyo will eventually come, but not soon.
Possible weak/cheap casing design - Case feels pretty strong to me.
AT&T doesn't have a good lineup of Android phones -- every Android phone has a glaring weakness. The Aria is low-end in all categories (but works), X10 is Android v1.6 and the Captivate has poor GPS. I do think the Captivate is the best Android phone AT&T has... but you'll be screwed either way.
Thanks for your reply.
Is it possible that the HTC Desire could be unlocked and work with AT&T?

[Q] rSAP Carkit functionality

Still, this problem keeps hauting us.
A little explenation to start off with, but a lot of info can be found around the web.
In many VAG concern cars (Skoda, Audi, VW, Seat) there are carkits which can only work using the (nokia) bluetooth rSAP (remote Sim Access Profile) protocol. While a great system (it copies your sim over bluetooth, puts the phone in airplane mode and acts as it's own radio, so perfect signal and sound quality), it is often not implemented on phones anymore.
Your best bet used to be Symbian phones from Nokia or Samsung. But often, even then, the newer phones had botched implementations in my opinion.
Now, for the first time, it seems that rSAP has been sighted on Android with the i9000 (Galaxy S) from Samsung.
So... buy that one would say. And sure, I Agree, but I have also told myself I would never buy anything from samsung anymore because of their horrible support.
So I was looking at the Nexus S as a great little device, and sure, I know samsung makes it, but the google brand gives me confidence that it will support it, and fix any bugs or even provide updates when needed!
So I know my request is a bit hypocrit, but would it be possible to transplant this bluetooth profile to the nexus S (for instance)?
Why hypocrit? Well, because making a ROM for the Nexus S which has the rSAP in it, makes it a custom ROM functionality for which there is no real suppport or upgradability looking at the future.
Still, I would very much like anyone to take a look at this and see how hard it would actually be (to build this functionality into a ROM, either using the Samsung code or anything else that is out there).
If anyone can shed some light on this, that would be greatly appreciated by me and many other people whom are basically screwed with a very expensive, non-functioning carkit.
The Galaxy S has support, I wonder why nobody has ported it to the Nexus S custom ROMs (Galaxy S custom ROMs have rSAP support).
There is an app in the market (search for android rsap) to add support to the Nexus S (with root) which is working (for me).
