Exchange Server Sync Issue - General Questions and Answers

Currently I have a Verizon TP2 running WM 6.5x, I cannot sync with my college exchange server for my email. (error security certificate on server is not valid) I have spent countless hours googling and forum searching
I did notice that when I was running verizons wm 6.5 I was allowed to sync, after selecting "yes" on the sync anway question box that popped up. Apparently this must be 6.5x issue. No matter how many 6.5x custom roms I flash they all have this one problem in common.
Anyone know of a work around tor 6.5x?

Did you install the cert on your phone? You can also try loading the url they give you in Internet Explorer (on your pc) and you can see if there are any clues as to why its not working on your phone.

WM Live?

I continue to run into an issue with WM Live where I am trying to get my email as it is received into my account.
Is anyone else having a problem where its not syncing all the time?
Same here
From of yesterday I guess
Would you guys mind posting some more information with your Windows Live problems???
Like what ROM you are currently running and maybe the version # of Windows Live installed on your device. I also think it would be helpful to point out if you are using a Tilt or Tytn II so we can see if there are any differences between the devices.
I have been running AustinSync's BigStorage ROM on my Tilt with WL version 10.6.0032.2100 and so far have not run into any problems. As a matter of fact WL is running much better on the BigStorage ROM than it was on the HTC stock rom.
UPDATE
I had to open my big mouth didn't I. Just started having all kinds of connection issues with Windows Live (10.6.0032.2100). The only changes I made were installing TCPMP and the Flashbundle.cab to view youTube videos. Now I keep having to soft reset my Tilt in order to successfully send and receive email! When I open WL and check the Sync screen it is stuck on "Checking Internet connectivity". All other applications are getting internet connections no problem (including Live Search - the mapping program) This is a major issue for me, as I use WL for all of my email and contacts right now. Does anybody have any ideas on a fix for these connection inssues.
I am running a tilt with Kaiser AKU.0.7.0 Cooked ROM v.1.57.000.1.
according to the list I'm running Windows Live Mobile 10.6.31.2600.
What other info can I give?
I have tried both of the big storage rom's and had the same problems.
There is definitely an issue were WL can not detect the Kaiser's internet connection. I have been searching for answers all night, but no luck. I even tried the "GPRS Always On " Reg tweak from the sticky post, but it did not help.
This is a big problem for me, as I use Live for all of my contacts, email, and chat.
Has anyone found a workaround or fix??
Check to see if your proxy server is checked. It was a problem I had when I could not connect to the internet.

Known issue, not yet resolved - see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332362
you can download the windows live application that is on most WM6 devices by default... at&t decided we dont need it apparently. this will allow you to do msn messenger (windows live messenger) over data instead of sms as well as working with windows live mail.
download file:

Not to be a noob, but I am, so how do I install this?
I'm using the 8525 with WM6.
My main issue is getting Windows Live to run on WiFi, I'm assuming this will fix it. Any help would be great, thanks.

Issues with OTA sync; AT&T Kaiser just recently purchased and rom upgraded

Ok I have wrestled with this for 2 days straight.
I had issues with this with my CFO's windows mobile device but at least his was giving me a specific error message.
My Tilt has the latest Dutty ROM upgrade (Dual Touch), I haven't been able to get my exchange server synced OTA.
I run a Exchange 2007 Enterprise environment. Everything on the server side is fine. My OWA url is https://webmail.firethornmobile.net. All I get is waiting on network after 2-15 minutes.
I have soft reset, deleted the PC partnership, taken my connection off of auto and tried both my work connection and isp.
I'm starting to suspect it maybe the ROM upgrade but it was doing the same thing when I first started the phone.
Please help.
OMA enabled?
Do you have the OMA enabled? Do you have the server root CA installed in the tilt (I am assuming you are using secure method for OMA)?
I have flashed Dutty's dual touch v2 and I don't have problem to get emails through OMA services.
Do you ever get the other PDA sync with email before? From the error message, it seems the Activesync in the Tilt can't talk to the exchange (front end) server at all.
Yes on Exchange 2007 OMA is enabled natively. In the middle of seperating data centres from our sister company.
We just got bought by Qualcomm so we never bought a cert from Verisign. I am using a self sign cert from our exchange server ( I have to turn SSL off on the pda side.
This has never worked, I already called Cingular and they said if I can get webmail from gmail and hotmail then it isn't their problem.
I have installed the self signed cert on the handset.
OK, you don't need to install the self-signing cert in the PDA, but you need to install the root cert of the self-signing cert in the PDA.
Usually, a server cert or user cert has a root authority (CA), you need to install the CA cert in the PDA, not the server cert.
If you can install a window server (2000 or 2003), you can enable the certificate authority server and issue your exchange server a server certificate. In this case, you will have your own root certificate. I don't suggest you to use Verisign's certificate because everyone has Verisign's root certificate can try to "play" with your OMA server.
However, the error message is still showing that the Activesync in PDA can't reach to the OMA at all.
BTW, the push email doens't work if it's not on the SSL connection.
I apologize that I wasn't clear. Its is the root cert from the CA (Which is our DNS server).
I realize the message means that it isn't getting to OMA. I have been on the phone with AT&T and HTC aboutthis and no one can tell me why it can't connect. I have been given tons of different network settings by AT&T and HTC and nothing changes. I get different error messages but when i put everything back to the way it should be it still gives me this generic message.
I have configured my CFO's handset to get email (Its Palm Treo with WM 6.0) and even though that was a pain in ass it still works (just as good as his Blackberry) and he has SSL unchecked as well.
In that case, you can try to see if you can reach to the OWA from your PDA, if it can, you shall not have network issue.
BTW: the connon name of the server cert must be the same as your public domain name, otherwise, the Activesync will still reject the connection.

I agree with the poster above. I have this exact same set up at my company and it does work. The certificate has to be the external name of the exchange server. If this does not match the PDA will never sync. Check your certificate and make sure the FQDN is correct.
I just check your exchange server from the URL you posted above, your OMA and OWA are working, but the certificate's common name is not the same as the public domain name.
Try to re-issue the certificate, it may just work.
Thanks guys. I'll try that.
Webmail does work from the handset. I don't know how I got my CFo's working to be honest if its flaking on the name of the cert but I'll try that and let you know. I was about to hard reset this thing and leave the cooked ROM's alone for a while. Hopefully this resolves it.
From my experience dealing with Acticesync in the PDA, it's very picky of the name of the certificate. I think that's security reason. The Activesync doens't accept certificate that common name doesn't match the public domain name.
When I use the IP address for test, I have to get a certifiate with the IP address as its common. So I believe that's the certificate's problem, not the cooked rom.
I still suggest you to get your own CA and certificate, in that way, you have more control even debugging this problem.
I feel like a moron asking but how the hell do I change the common name.
You can't change an existing certificate, you have to re-issue a new certificate.
I guest you can't do it by the self-siging certificate, but I am not fimiliar with the self-signing certificate. Get a WIN server machine and install the CA server, after that, you can issue a certificate.
Assumeing you have a CA server ready:
1. Request the certificate from exchange server: you will have a chance to enter the common name of this certificate.
2. Generate a certificate from this certificate request from CA server
3. Import the certificate back to the exchange server.
If you can't get a WIN server as CA server, I will need to ask my colleagues about the free CA server he used from the Internet.
My DNS box is a CA server (started the service on that).
I'll try that then (I hard reset and I now I have an error stating I'm not authorized).
I'll let you know if it works. Thanks.
Ok I believe I did it right but I still get tha error (When connect via usb cable) and I still get the waiting for network message.
When you connect to the USB cable, you have to "allow" the Internet access pass through from the Activesync in the PC, otherwise, it won't reach out to the Internet at all.
Try to connect to other web site to see if you have a good internet connection or not.
Some updates. I made sure the cert is the right common name. I noticed that after I install it on the handset it doesn't put the cert in the root tab...only intermediate. I installed the ca server's cert as well (That went into the root tab).
Im leaving ssl checked and now I get 0X80072F17.
incorrect common name
Your common name is still not correct, it shall be "webmail.firethornmobile.net" only, but you put "http://" at the begining and "/owa" at the end, it not correct.
You have to issue the server certificate one more time with "webmail.firethornmobile.net" (without quotes) as the common name.
Also, when I check the Certification path of your certificate, I don't see this certificate is under any root certificate. Properly you need to check your CA (DNS) to see if it's setup properly.
Hey,
Use this site to figure out the errors you are getting on your phone. http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php
Also are you the Exchange Admin? If so enable verbose logging so that you can see what is going on with exchange as the connection comes in.
Also if you want to make sure it is not the cert you can "Enable" SSL on the phone and then reg hack it so that it doesn't check for the cert. this will allow you to see if it is a cert problem.
Let me know if you need any help with that. I"m an Exchange Admin and i work with Active Sync day in and day out.
Tried Fix Suggested on Pocket PC FAQ Site
I think this is ON TOPIC. If not, please advise and I will repost elsewhere.
I flashed my phone with the Dutty Beta 2 Touchflow ROM for Tilt. I am getting the following error and have tried the matched solution from Pocket PC FAQ:
0x80830003 N/A Synchronization failed. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator.
1. The Exchange server is configured to require client certificates.
1. On the Exchange server, launch Internet Services Manager. Right click on the Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync virtual directory and choose Properties. Select the Directory Security tab. Click the Edit button in the Secure Communications section and select the option to “Ignore client certificates.”
I continue to get the same error even after dumping the device through the exchange server.
My System Admin thinks that there is something wrong with the version of ACTIVE SYNC provided in the ROM used to flash the device.
Any thoughts/direction you could point me in or is there any other info you need?? Is th

I saw in you other post that you are running : 8.1.122...strange version ...
Exchange 2007 SP1 is : 8.1.240.0
And Exchnage 2007 is : 8.0.685.0
What's your exchange ?
SP1 beta 2
rollup package 3 for exchange 2007 is needed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934402
Certificate?
I also BELIEVE that you need a CA Security Certificate. Self Signed doesn't work. Don't have direct proof of this statement only from reading documentation and the fact that in other arenas (including Sharepoint integration) you have to use a CA Cert.
anyone tried this with getztek ?
0x85010015 - 1
Also have you tried the disable TASKS in Activesynch, soft reset, enable TASKS in sync trick?
0x85010015 - 2
For testing just yourself with a qualititively different phone in terms of either hardware or ROM on the phone - this is a long shot because you don't have others at the Enterprise to test this idea before deciding it is only happening to you or everyone
It is a long PIA to do but actually worked for me the other day. Remember in this case - the clue was that it was only one person in the Enterprise having the problem. All others (with identical phones) were not.
Somewhere DEEP in Google Groups is a discussion (sorry I lost the link) of this error code which saved me the other day when it was only happening to ONE person in the Enterprise.
In essence there is a corrupt entry in their Exchange Storage somewhere. The fix is to:
Back their mailbox up to a PST by ExMerge or Export tool in Outlook
Run the PST repair tool on the PST file
Delete their Mailbox in Exchange.
Run Exchange Cleanup
Create a new empty mailbox
Import their data from the PST file.
Like I say - long shot but worked for me.
I was able to test on a SP1 Exchange 2K7 a real one and it works
Cheers

I use a hosted exchange mailbox, syncing & push email work perfect for me, even with WM6.1, never tried it with the original roms but my cooked one has no issue with exchange for sure!
Hi, I just upgraded to the official Dutch WM 6.1 ROM. Everything is working great... except Exchange sync! I get the error 0x85010015 too. The system administrator says he is already running Exchange 2007 SP1 which would contain the mensioned update.
Does anyone have an idea on what I can try to get Exchange sync working?
Exchange 2007 SP1 here, and works fine with every WM6.1 ROM i have tested (including official ones by HTC)...
Cheers.
I this a production E2K7 environment? Why not install RTM bits???
I'm on HTC's "official" WinMo 6.1 Rom on my Tilt and have no issues with email sync ... as for certs to the listener in the ISA server, you can use self signed (not recommender), but unified certs with multiple alternate names are problematic on ISA Server 2006.

Can sync OTA with a 6.0 rom - but not the 6.1 rom - error 8503001c

It does not work for me when I try to sync to an exchange server with a 6.1 rom. With a 6.0 rom I can always sync with both the Outlook on the PC and the exchange server. But when I upgrade, I can only sync with the Outlook on the PC - sync with the exchange server fails to work. It fails when I try OTA, and it fails when I try with USB. I have tried 3 different 6.1 rom for kaiser, and also tried on a 6.1 rom ELF I have - with the same result. But when I go back to a 6.0 rom - everything works again. I have tried setting up the phone manually - to make sure it is identical with the 6.0 rom - but still no luck. I can sync with mails, calendar etc on the Outlook on the pc, but when I change it to sync with the server - it wont.
Does anyone have a solution?
Is there not at single person that can help me with my problem??
I really want to upgrade to 6.1 rom - but can't, since I have to be able to sync with the exchange server for work reasons.....
Mine just works. Sorry I wish I could help but I wanted to let you know mine has worked on every rom I have tried. Sleuth right now.

And you did nothing different when setting up the phone with the 6.1 rom compaired to the 6.0 rom? Have you noticed any differences in the settings?

I am using the exchange server at the company where I work - and dont have much knowledge of that - but I am pretty sure they still rund 2003 exchange server. Do you need to have exchange cerver 2007 for using 6.1 rom?.
Are there not anybody that have a solution to my problem? Or do I really have to stay with a 6.0 rom?
I think you need to hard reset again
00s of people use OTA with Exchange with 6.1 without any problems
Odds are it is something you did wrong or a bad flash.
Re-flash, hard reset, try to re-load your radio, rinse, lather repeat
Nobody has a solution because nobody else is having this problem. I just upgraded to 6.1 yesterday and have no issue with OTA sync with our exchange server (2007 w/SP1).
What error are you getting when you try to sync? There is a lot of troubleshooting that can be done, but it may be difficult for you to do so without help of the Exchange server admin. If you're actually hitting the Exchange server, there are various logs that can be accessed, but for starters, we'd need more info on what exactly the problem is other than 'I cant sync'. I assume you're getting some sort of 0x00000000 type error?
Exchange 03
""My First Post""
I flashed with Duttys 6.1 a couple of days ago and am in Tennessee using At&t and used the 1.64.06.04 radio. I'm the Network Admin at my company and use Exchange 03 and everything works great for pushing email, calendar, etc. Basically im just saying that 07 isn't required. Perhaps you should try a different radio? Just throwing in my two cents worth as this is my first Phone ROM flash I've done since my MPX200.

As long as he has data connectivity, it's likely not the radio. He just hasn't given us enough info to go on. One thing you might check is to try with both SSL enabled and disabled but I only bring that up because someone here recently upgraded their phone and forgot about that checkbox, but of course they were getting a specific error that helped me to solve the problem.
Error code
The errror code I get is:
8503001c
I thought I had already written that - but my mistake. I have googled, and I have not found one solution that could help in my case. Often it is an errorcode you get related to Vista - and I am running XP.

Read some of this. From what I've read here and elsewhere, it seems to me like that error is caused by some sort of corruption in the data that's trying to sync. Try to sync just mail, if that works, add tasks, etc until you encounter the error. See here for more info:
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2769442&SiteID=65
Cool - thanks for the different advices. I will try during the weekend to reflash - and check for some corrupted files. Hopefully it will work out at the end.
Same problem here HTC TYTNII
After upgrading to a WM 6.1 rom no sync with the Exchange-server
Error 8503001c.
Trying to downgrade to WM6.0 rom at the moment.
If anybody find a real solution please let me know
I tried a whole weekend - and finally I managed to be able to syncronize my mails with the exchange server. I dont know why it suddently accepted the mails - and I left it there, and i settled for that.
I normally also syncronized contacts, calendar and tasks with the server with my WM6.0.
I tested for corrupted files - found nothing. Even when I deleted all the contacts in the contact folder, it still would not syncronize with the exchange server.
I did not go any further with the issue - since apparently I was the only one. So please let me know if you find any logical explanation - because I would prefer being able to syncronize with the Server instead - expecially for my calender.
And what has changed??

Please can you tell me what has changed?? Do you still use a Rom with WM6.1??
I just returned to a 6.0 Rom and Atcive Sync works like a train. No problems at all. So can somebody figure out what is happening here??
Is it a WM6.1 and Exchangeserver 2003 issue?? There must be more companies using still the Exchange 2003 ?? (Maybe we even stll have it running on a Win 2000 server )

50 email limit - Windows Live Hotmail

Hey all,
I have a HTC Touch phone through Bell and have my hotmail account setup on it to receive emails from my account. The problem I am having is that it will only allow me to see the latest 50 emails.
Does anyone know how to change this value? Is there a registry hack/setting/etc that can be changed?
I saw one "solution", which was setting up your account through outlook instead, but then there isn't push, and that's why I use it.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
There is no solution to this as far as i am aware. I am using a different client to push hotmail to my trinity and had the same issue. All i could see was the top 50 messages in my inbox, as newer ones were deleted then older ones would synch across. Checking with them it was confirmed that the 50 message limit was imposed by Microsoft.

i am Sooooooo frustrated.
i thought i finally found the answer to my problems in windows live.
My wm6.1 phone is SOOOOOO unreliable when i need it to download/send emails.
I set up a hotmail account and configured windows live on my phone only to find out that i can only SEE MY LATEST 50 EMAILS!!!
WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS?!?!?!?!?
They create a solution to smtp/imap/pop3 problems in windows live and then they make it unusable for ANYONE!
What other solutions are available?
I will never purchase another windows mobile phone again. Apparently this has been a problem for a long time and they have yet to address it...
