Are there any different default settings for wifi between WM5 and WM6? I ask because I've two XDA Execs, one running WM5 and one WM6 yet they exhibit different behaviour:
WM5
Can see LAN on my WEP setup
Can see internet on my WEP setup
Can see internet on neighbour's unprotected Wifi
Can see internet on UMTS/GPRS
WM6
Can see LAN on my WEP setup
Can NOT see internet on my WEP setup
Can see internet on neighbour's unprotected Wifi
Can see internet on UMTS/GPRS
Now, I've not had to set up the router or WLAN stuff with specified MAC codes for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox, either XDA, etc.
So, what should I check?
LOL, now the WM5 mobile can't see the internet and the WM6 can!
Sounds more like an issue in your router/signal.
If it persists you could try changing your SSID's channel to 6 or 1 to avoid conflict?
Already on 6 iirc.
What should I suspect, though? I'm so teh n00b with wifi

Most come with 11 as standard, the trouble is that can mean conflict as they are all on the same wavelength, 1 and 6 mean you are completely off the same wavelength (whatever the technical explanation is) from 11 (and the other depending on what you choose).
Have a look at the local wifis you see, pick 1,6 or 11 depending on what isn't used near you.
Of course, someone may be using say 2, which overlaps with 1 quite a bit (and 6 a little), so 11 would be better, etc.
Hello everyone,
First let me say what a great forums this is, thanks to those who created it and the people here keeping it active.
I been having a problem connecting to my wi-fi at work. Several people who have mac laptops and iphones are able to find the wi-fi and connect right away in my office.
On my ATT Tilt it doesnt locate it. I enter the network id and when the device finds the signal it asks for a network key
Would anyone know why it isn't getting a network key or where can I find the network key to the wi-fi device?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-impact2oo
The network detected is a security enabled network and you have to ask the network administrator for the key
hi, first post here.
i have an HTC Touch Cruise with the default factory rom and it has an internal wifi antenna... I'm trying to setup a wireless network with my neighbour but my PC doesn't have a wifi adapter (and i don't have the money for one right now), so i was wondering if it is possible to make the pda some sort of adapter for the pc to use via usb/bluetooth?
One of the first thing we'll do if it's possible is to crack the wep key cause he can't rembemer the password and a hard reset to the router doesn't erase it
can also anyone suggest some tools to do that job?
I was thinking of running these tools on the pc since the pda will only serve as some kind of NIC...
hope someone can help...
Edit: Forgot to mention that i also have a bluetooh adapter on the pc if that comes of any use
P.S: Great Forum btw
There's an internet sharing option in Windows Mobile 6. Connect to the wifi network using the cruise and configure the internet sharing options. Then connect the cruise to the PC via USB and the PC should be able to access the net via the cruise's wifi connection.

i've been snoping around that part, but it asks me for a conection name in which is on <none> cause i don't have a connection configured... if i go to the connections part, i don't know what kind of connection to create as it asks me to create a VPN or an ISP connection...
how can i configure internet sharing propperly?
would i be able to crack the wep key on the pc that way? (cracking it on the pc via the pda)
1. The program you'ew looking for is WmWifiRouter 1.20, it enables you to use your phone as a WiFi -> USB adapter...
2. Ask your neigbour to use Cain on his pc... it can reveal what's written in the password boxes (if it's XP or older), reveal it in the WiFi connection settings on the pc... Whith this you won't need any WEP cracking... also he should be able to change the WEP key without the original... if he doesn't know the access code to the router that's THE problem, check the manual for default values, and try those first before attempting anything else...
3. For configuring a 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE connection you'll need a data plan from you mobile carrier... after that you can configure the connection on your PDA.
VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking (read Wiki for more info)
ISP stand for Internet Service Provider (this'll be the one you'll need)

From what i've read on this forums, WmWifiRouter is for routing my 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE to other phones via wifi, but correct me if i'm wrong lol.
what i want to do is basiclly have wifi on the pc using the pda's built in antenna...
Thanks for the tips on the router, we'll try that
i know what those acronyms mean i just don't know how to configure them for the internet sharing program...
The ICS only shares your mobile internet with one computer be it on USB or BT, it can't act as a wifi adapter... The WMWifiRouter uses the ICS, but with different settings, that can't be utilized manualy... you can create an Ad-Hoc network with some registry tuning, but that's about it.. no DHCP, no NAT, no WEP, nothing that makes it easy, and secure...
Also I mentioned a version number for WmWifiRouter... the leatest (1.20) supports the Wifi -> USB mode, so with this your PDA can act as a WiFi adapter.
Also these PDAs weren't ment to be used this way, so expect high-level battery drainage, you'll need atleast 2 USB ports to charge it while using WMWiFiRouter.
But you can download the trial from the site, and see for your self... you won't loose anything with trying...

Ok, i got the 1.20 trial on the pda and got it working in Wifi -> usb mode, but now how do i search wireless networks on the pc? i noticed it is detected as wired connection, not a wireless one...
You don't need to quote the previous reply...
The PC sees a wired connection... so? You thought that, you can use the windows Wireless Zero Config for searching? I guess you just found out that you can't...
The wireless connection is managed by your PDA, connect to a wireless network with you PDA after you set up the WiFi -> USB...
gnick is correct, I am actually using my phone at home as a Wifi Adapter with WMWifiRouter 1.25 and it works very well. And YES, you have to connect your Wifi on phone first, then connect phone to computer via USB and (in my case) Windows 7 does the rest... I believe Vista also. Not sure about XP, don't have an XP machine, well I do, but it's off sitting in the closet (in timeout for not behaving good.. hehe)
I have had trouble setting up my tp2 as a adhoc network to connect via either the htc wifi router or the wmwifirouter with wep encrytion enabled with a mac under os x 10.4.11. I googled and searched these various forums and could not find an answer. I discovered on some mac kb article that sometimes in os x in order to access any third party (ie non apple) wireless routers under wep you need to put a $ before the encrytion key. So I input a 10 digit hexidecimal key into wmwifirouter (1234567890) and on my mac I put $1234567890 and it connects now no problems... (for anyone of you who runs into this issue)
Hi there,
I just installed MIUI_Au 1.5.6 R1 (although this issue may be Android wide, I haven't had the chance to test on any other roms yet) on my HTC Desire and love how it is looking! I have one major problem with it though and that is I cannot connect to my wifi network. The password for my wifi is under the 8 character minimum acceptance length. I have no way of changing this password (I'm in corporate housing, hence I don't have access to the router).
To sum up what happens:
- Enter wifi settings
- Pick the wireless network I want to connect to
- Tap in the box to bring up keyboard
- Punch in password
- Try to tap "Connect" but it is greyed out
- Enter extra characters until 8 character length is reached
- "Connect" button becomes active, but trying to connect obviously fails since it is an incorrect password
Note that I have successfully connected to this network with my laptop (Macbook running OS 10.6.7).
How can I connect to my wifi network (only network around that I have access to) with such a short password or am I just stuck?
The security type on the network is WPA/WPA2 PSK.
Thanks ahead for any help or responses!
Colin
Same issue here with windows mobile, any ideas????
The WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) key must meet one of the following guidelines:
- Between 8 and 63 characters (A longer WPA key is more secure than a short one)
- Exactly 64 characters using 0-9 and A-F
If your access type is WPA/WPA2-PSK, then there is no way your password is under 8 characters.
some routers do allow short passwords for this type of wifi, but is there a solution to force short password to the mobile without asking the router owner to change his password to longer one?
A router will allow you to have a shorter pass-code on WAP but never on WPA/WPA2-PSK because of encryption. You can't force a phone to accept a shorter code. What i'd suggest is that you go on your router and change the password length, a lot easier.
