Last week, we were following the rise of some mobile versions of Firefox (Maemo, Android) and the fall of others (Windows Mobile). This week, the much-talked-about Android edition of Mozilla's browser has hit Android forums as a pre-release download. It's not feature-complete yet, but it does have a bookmark manager and support some add-ons. If you want to be the first kid on your block to try Firefox on Android, it's worth a download.
Our friend Brad Linder, over at Mobiputing, says that the build that's going around right now is optimized for Droid, and doesn't run quite so smoothly on his Nexus One. He also points out that you'll need to copy the .apk file to your phone's SD card and use a file explorer app to complete the install. It's called "GeckoApp," by the way, which is a reference to the Gecko rendering engine used in Firefox.
If you're not amongst the brave early-adopters who want to download and install a prerelease app, you can still scope out the video after the jump for a visual taste of Firefox on Android.

The only time I saw something other than the Hero threads (recently anyways) was last night when the forums were down for maintenance.

I installed it and it just FC's

Could someone post the apk, its asking me to sign in.

user name: fennec
password: android
Get the fennec.apk version.. the "D" is for debug..

Now if google would just release Chrome for Android i would be very happy.

The German directions say it's for use in emulators only, not to be downloaded to the device.
Fennec should be fun when it's ready.

What, you can't read German? It tells you on the site:
User für Downloads: fennec
Passwort für Downloads: android
It means what it looks like: User for Downloads: fennec
Password for Downloads: android
The larger versions with a 'D' are debug versions.

Yikes. Even to this day I still have major memory leaks with Firefox. It's manageable on a PC with 4 gb of ram, but I'm a bit nervous about the havoc it could play with a mobile device.

too bad you should read the first post here and see how much memory it takes up on your phone lol

About new ROM's and stuff...
As much as I love to see new roms appearing on the site and beeing very curious to test all of em. We learned from the past that we would like to know what is actually new or improved in these so called roms (aspecialy the PDAVIET) If it is just 2 new folders with a better flashy icon than most of us don't bother updating.
So when you post a new cook, built or whatever, can you please be a little more specific?
Thanks in advance!!
any other link pls.
Again, no changelog... (as with the last two PDAVIET ROMs)

Tried this image. Works fine, no bugs so far (although my GSM stack is dead on my M5000, so I can't test call-related stuff).
Base install (which puts a lot on there) gives me:
Storage:
- Total: 43.50 MB, In Use: 4.38 MB, Free: 39.12 MB
Program:
- Total: 48.88 MB, In Use: 20.45 MB, Free: 28.43 MB
(Only thing running is ActiveSync in the background on the phone, as by default).
Version-wise,
Windows Mobile 6
OS 5.2.318 build 15341.0.0.0
ROM version: 2.10.05 PV
ROM date: 04/16/07
Edit: grrr, listed the entire set of programs/utils etc, but the forum didn't post it. Oh well.
There are a few sloppily removed programs on here, namely Terminal Services Client, ClearVue PDF (has been replaced with Adobe Reader LE, but icon not removed), Help, Java and PVPlayer.
The PocketSecure installed is an expired demo and will not run.
The 'Microsoft Reader' is not activated.
There's a program called 'Eye On Privacy' installed which requests a password. The password is not provided, and all tested entries are invalid.
You may also want to play 'Spot the ROM-makers URL' which seems to pop up in various places (device information, etc )
All in all I'd say that this is not a very good ROM - it should have been polished far more before release!
souleh
serial
I agree with the post above needs a polish.
The PocketSecure installed is an expired demo and will not run. (Require a serial) if you have it
The 'Microsoft Reader' is not activated (How to activate)
Eye on Privacy (password is “1234”)
Anyway great rom, programmes run quicker than any other rom i have installed todate.
But what about video call...
wIfI ACCESS
Is it modified Dark-Force ROM?
Have you tried WiFi with Proxy Server?
I tried PV ROM's before and I have problem accessing our Company's WiFi with Proxy Server..
Any idea....?

I have put a lot of time and work into Pocket Secure, and sell it at a very fair price, for the amount of security that it provides! If anyone wants their own license, please visit my website, and purchase one. Heck, I usually will give discount coupons just for the asking!

"It's our belief that you'll see an Android-based version of Flash in the coming months," said Anup Murarka, director of technical marketing for mobile and devices at Adobe.
For those eagerly waiting to watch online videos on phone, this should bring a smile on your face. Adobe, ARM and Qualcomm have teamed-up to bring Flash to all phones running ARM11 and faster processors. Devices with at least 200 MHz processors, more than around 16 Mbytes of RAM and a "completely capable Web browser" will be able to render Web-based Flash content, Murarka said.
This was announced as part of Open Screen Project which aims to get Flash on every imaginable mobile device. Adobe will announce the project at the Max Developers Conference where it will also demonstrate Flash on an ARM smartphone.
Other partners in Open Screen Project like Samsung and NVIDIA are already working to support Flash. “NVIDIA is working with ARM and Adobe to ensure Adobe Flash technology takes full advantage of NVIDIA Tegra computer-on-a-chip solutions through open standards such as OpenGL ES 2.0,” said Michael Rayfield, GM of NVIDIA's mobile business.

Yeah Becuase its good for Google AdSense business and without flash its faint ads.
I think Flash is already there in WinCE devices in Latest Opera 9.50 Browser of HTC Diamond. means ARM based coding is already exists its just a matter of time to port it and if Google and Adobe both Ventured into it it will be great.
good point about google adsense. and here i thought google was doing it for me
if this is going to be on the OTA update, how will 'we' rooted RC30's going to get our hands on this?.. hmmmm..i guess we can just wait for JF to modify it for us.. but this is good news! YAY FLASH!

Its going to be interesting to see what is updated at the android source repository, since flash is property of adobe and not open source. We may not even have to update our phones but just the APK for the browser.
iirc the browser is considered a part of the Android software stack so most likely what will happen is an ota will update the browser to accept signed plugins. They can deliver the flash plugin with the ota update or change the current flash placeholder to let it link to an adobe download page.
So once flash is on our G1s, are they going to change the YouTube built-in app to go to the actual site, or is it still going to be m.youtube.com?
Maybe a new page that has the layout simplicities of the app, but with access to the actual site and all videos, not just m.youtube.com enabled videos?
I'm sure I'm just dreaming there, but it'd be nice

Wow this is freaking awesome. if this is java, will it work on like your windows mobile too? then you can support 2 formats at once?
Another small question. Slacker will become on-demand soon. Will you take a dive into there app side and compete and see if you can do the same as you do here with Grooveshark? I never seen anyone make a Slacker app. What id give is for a Windows Mobile one that actually works that shows the whole screen.
SciLor! Oh man when I saw your post I was so stoked. Welcome to Android development Any chance of a DL'er as in WM?

The "official" Grooveshark app requires you to be a "VIP" member to use it, whereas scilor's app does not .
It is free and may have different features.

Maybe that guy is referring to the fact that grooveshark frowns upon 3rd praty apps so you might as well just get a hacked official app if you are gonna get something frowned upon. That being said,
This is freaking exciting. The only reason I hesitated moving from winmo to android was because of scilors apps. For now I have a vip membership but i will definitely be keeping a test version of this on my phone as well. I wish I had a spare android device to send him.
Thank you for the "device" , but I managed to get Android working on my HD2.
Which Apps are you exactly missing on Android?

Andy breaks down the barrier between desktop and mobile computing, while keeping a user up to date with the latest Android OS feature upgrades. It also provides users with unlimited storage capacity, Windows and Mac compatibility, and the freedom to play the most popular mobile games on a desktop. With phone as a joystick, you will never have to sacrifice the multi-touch or gyro elements of gaming, and thanks to seamless connection between desktop and mobile, you can receive a SnapChat phone picture on the street and see it on your desktop at home or just download Whatsapp for pc.

I think site should provide the full package for slow internet connection.
Sorry, why to put this on XDA Forums after almost a year of its availability?
It might not make much of a difference with desktop PC's but, something limited in CPU performance Andy OS doesn't seem to run well, tested on my T100TA (x86 baytrail tablet) was choppy and laggy. DuOS runs extremely well on the same tablet, worth noting and trying if you have the same or similar device.

Leapdroid - a brand new and most performing Android virtual machine

Hi All,
We have just released a new Android virtual machine, called Leapdroid, it is a Windows program that allows you to run Android Apps in Windows. Our focus has been on graphics performance. It outperforms all other players on market, such as BlueStacks, Genymotions, Andyroid, etc... it supports a lot of games, and it it is totally free, you can download it from our website:
http://www.leapdroid.com
From development point of views, we have implemented most features that Google's emulator has, such as compatible adb. Our virtual machine is the only vm that can start adb before vm starts, same as a real device, so you can get the first line of adb logcat. We have also optimized other aspects of the system.
Check it out!

Here is a video with Leapdroid playing a few games, including a shooting game. This video demonstrates the advanced key mapping feature.
Booting Speed is really amazing
I tried using several android emulators such as B****, G*****. Tried this new one. Having not gone through intensive usage now, I am already shocked by its launching speed. Amazing! Really beats others. It is a fresh boot, not like B****'s not shutting down and faking instant boot.
I forgot to mention that our vm supports multiple instances. After installations, two android virtual machines will be created.
Has been looking around for a VM to play Minecraft. This is the only capable so far.
Thanks, Leapdroid!
How I can switch input language?
"Control + Spacebar" not working for me.

One question: (You would rock some worlds with that)
Could you somehow release a version compiled for arm-thumb2 so windows-rt-JB users could finally open android apps on their first gen surface RT <3
Probably impossible, but I never give up the hope
Hi Blade,
Thanks for the nice suggestions. A thinner run-time version that can run on ARM systems is definitely our direction, but it will take quite sometime to implement. For the moment, we are focusing on developing a new generation of android virtual machine on X86 architecture. As you may have noted, current android virtual machines are still not that compatible if compared with a real android device, many apps still don't run well inside emulators. Leapdroid will lead in these aspects.
Good performance
Run very smoothly so far. Is there a way to install apps without using Google account?

Assuming you have your APK ready:
I've found the following information on their website h t t p : / / leapdroid . com / helpcenter . html. It seems that they reply on standard adb to install programs.
I typically use apkmirror to download APKs. What kind of channel do you use?
BTW: I do not understand XDA does not let me to post web links. Maybe for safety reason....
http://www.leapdroid.com/helpcenter.html has more info
Before we enable drag/drop (which should come soon), you will have to use adb to install apk.
Adb works for me. Great work!
When can we see a Mac version?
We are working on Mac and actually Linux version too, but currently focusing on Windows.
How do I unroot or install Xposed?
You can do adb remount, then you can change system partition
I'd love to try this, but I feel very suspicious.
There's no "about" page on the Leapdroid website, so we don't know who we are giving our Google Account credentials to when we login.
Three of the comments on this thread were written by new members who signed up just after this thread was started... that's a red flag for me.
If you look at my profile, you will see I am not new, you can also google my name, will find out.
Our website will have more info soon, we are a VC funded company, located in Fremont, California. I did Android vm a few years back, also released here, please check my old posts.
We have another thread, which is here, with more comments:

I appreciate the info. I'll keep an eye on this project and will reconsider installing it once more info is put up on the site.
It works really Well. Is there any thought of updating it to newer Android versions? Definitely the best Emulator I have used so far.
