What about a sticky thread for all ROMs?
I think it should remain active, but grouped in a single post under the name olds sticky, so this is easier to locate.
Greetings.
Yes, if an [OLD] tag would be added the stickies would be cleaner.
But the best sollution would be for everyone to make fresh ROMs!

agree 100%
I voted "Yes", but I'd like to see a rollup sticky for at least a few months after the last update...

One more for this option
i'm sorry for my ignorance but what is exactly a stiky?
We've got too many stickies at the moment and it's hard to keep track of all the different build numbers, so I think we should have a single sticky post which links to the following wiki page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Cooked_ROMs

Stickies are those threads that stay at the top of the first page of threads, even if no one posts in them for a while. You will notice they have "Sticky" to the left of their name.

The problem with that Wiki page is that the ROM developers don't update\maintain it
I'll probably have a go at updating it after my exams are over.
I have all the respect for Jwrightmcps's ROMS ..thats how I started with Universal Cooked ROMs..however honestly..it would be nice if the cooker let an update if he was working on something or not....
Based on that...if the cooker leaves no update on what he's doing next I think the ROM sticky needs to go...in fact I agree with the [OLD] thread subject update. Its a good idea however better than that would be to open a seperate small subsection (subforum) for each device called Archived ROMs...anything thats over a 6 month timeframe is considered old with the latest technology updates and the fact that new rom's are shooting out (for other devices and brought over here) at the speed of light. We have seen more than 10 devices launched in the span of a year, which is amazing considering a few years ago ...it was quite the opposite...
I personally feel old rom's need to be archived (let people search them out, thats what SEARCH is for, or a subsection forum). It helps in another way. How many times do we see threads asking for "What's the best ROM to use" ... if a ROM is almost bugfree (or has no issues or bug reports since the last 6 months), they stay sticky (even if theres no development for a future rom) - this ensures that its close to stable and is worth STICKY even though its not the "latest thing" (its stable or close to stable).
Removing old rom's isnt the best idea, since it leaves us missing the past history of what the developers did and how far we all got. History should remain an integral part of the forum, however history needs no sticky. The Fast, Furious and the Stablest needs recognition. Obviously the old is gold - saying remains but not for a sticky. The idea of sticky is - GO HERE, IT's Important..historically yes, the old roms are milestones, however you have a search system for that...
Further the fact that you have Wikis for a few developers now, lets them post an update and a link to the past thread - the perfect History book (updated to today). I think that's how we should go further...The latest , stablest roms are setup as sticky OR optionally each developer has his own sticky thread - first post links to HIS/HER WIKI...for tons of information and links to old threads/roms....
I think thats the best way to go..however these are my thoughts based on what I would prefer .... suggestions will vary...but I think I make sense (at least to myself)

Exactly my point...if developers dont update it..they arent very interested or sure about it (or they dont have time). I feel wiki is the way to go. Developers should feel the time (or have a few fans) to fill in the details. Dutty updates his wiki (well he's on vacation so cant blame him on missing the latest if he did)...
I think Wiki makes a lot of sense and you have to start to use it. If we say people dont have the time to use or update wiki...maybe we should drop the wiki...(which wont happen)...the point is...Wiki is definitely a good thing to look at and develop on.
Hi all,
I have made a new thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398647
please can all devs add links to their roms in this thread, please nobody else post anything on this thread to keep it clean. I have requested that the mods remove any posts from this thread that do not contain rom links from Devs.
I have also requested that our old rom thread be released from sticky as I have added links to most of our (Beasty & Laurentius26) Roms in this main thread.
Good point D.
Cheers,
Beasty

Thanks mate,
I'll try and get round to doing the Wiki too, some time soon.
Getting a bit more free time now, time to get "the house in order" before moving on to the Pro.
I agree the Wiki should be done, I also believe a sticky thread for all WM6/WM6.1 Roms is very usefull in this forum though.
When did you become a mod sir?
Cheers,

I think some old Roms need to be sticky, e.g BL's 2.08.01. That came out long ago, it was stable and perfect and he didn't contributed anything as non-beta since that. Removing the track of such is unfair to the Devs I believe.

I have a sticky with a link to all my roms, and hope that other devs will add to that thread a post with all their rom versions and links.
I still prefer my old 2.07.05 FF, I think that was the best I have released, but everyone has their own preferences.
Maybe I will release one more Rom before moving on to Touch Pro, time will tell.
Cheers,

Hmmm, I see some contradictions already as to the purpose of this thread.
In my opinion I think it should be settled first what thread deserves as sticky. I would say first & foremost to go in is the Wiki, saves us & newbies from doing search for Universal essentials... unlocking, flashing, bootloader upgrade, page pool setup, etc., etc. etc.
A link to all the published ROM's probably organized by owner or by version (WM5, WM6, WM6.1, etc.) can be part of the wiki as well. Another working model is what our new mod & this thread owner TehPenguin is doing: A ROM repository. Point a link to it inside the Wiki and we can have a 'cleaner' forum threads.
Was wondering also why not all 'new' ROM's get stickied irregardless if its not the builder who posted it, any criteria in this matter?
My thoughts shared.
as the title says...?
I've been using Dutty's for the past few months, but it seems like ROMeOS is the best these days...
Probably the same one as the answer to the last time this question was asked... Oh, about 20 minutes ago. Please use the search. That's why it's there.
Seriously though, Best rom? Good question. Many are geared towards different ways of using the device. Best advice is to READ descriptions and threads like the rest of us and do your own research.

Agreed - when I got my TyTN II I also had the same question.
Well the answer is simple - LOTS OF RESEARCH!!!
there is not the best one in general, but one that fits your needs.
So please read description of each ROM

Like the others said - and it of course depends on your preferences (i.e. type of apps, performance, appearance, etc.)
A good rule of thumb (ALL NOOBS TAKE THIS HINT!!) would be to look at the postings for recent ROMS and see how many responses there are to the thread. It could be a red herring if there have been a few bugs, but generally it indicates a popular ROM and from reading (yes read the initial posts please!) you can quickly determine if this might be a ROM for you. The responses from users will highlight any issues that may be specific to the software you'd like to run.
Maybe the mods can close this now - or maybe create a "Which ROM should you flash - read this first" Sticky that paraphrases this to prevent this weekly question.
if you are looking for a multimedia ROM (stable) i suggest Dutty's April 29 ROM
if you are looking for fast and fancy ROM i suggest ROMEOS 3.5
here ya go
But still like said above it has to be a ROM that fits ur needs.
cheers
Find the Best Rom! Ask 10 cooks get 10 best Roms
First Hard SPL your phone find a rom offering. Read what others say about it, then if it sounds like something you might like, Flash it. Then try another and another and keep going until you can answer that question for yourself. READ! for your self and learn. The bottom line is the best rom is a myth! it only can be the best if you say it is so. What I believe to be the Best you might Flash and think it sucks. Do some work on your own and learn! WiKi, WiKi, WiKi!

Try ROMeOS V3.5
It's fast, stable and the support of Hang.Tuah is great.
These threads are popping up all over lately. Cany anyone do their own research anymore?
I've spent countless hours going through the forums...
Out of all of the roms that I have tried I would claim eOS is the fastest non buggiest rom out there. It is very streamlined and fast, and I had 0 bugs when using it, if that is all that you are concerned with. It is lacking in some features by default, letting users personalize it as they wish.
Jason
How was responsiveness? Do you know if there are any benchmarks out there (I'm lazy, thought I'd ask for a direct link before looking it up...) for it?
Forgot to also ask; with any of the ROM's - which one's are most friendliest when it comes to adding new cabs? I guess my goal is utilize the processor and... add those things we all like to screw around with for a week or two and decide if its worth keeping. Usually in my case, if it causes my phone to freeze, it's off to the next choice...

Please note, I'm asking not for your opinion, or what you're favorite ROM is, regardless what drives it or what extras are on it... I'm asking everyone for some facts - as of today, 12.13.2008, who has the fastest, non-buggiest ROM around? ROM's are buried everywhere and some include benchmarks, others don't. I'm on AT&T and a,s of last night, went back to the OEM 6.1 ROM.

There is no way to have software and not have bugs. NOTHING is going to perform EXACTLY as you want it to right out of the box.
To see what everyone WOULD respond to your message with if they wanted to - look at their signature - why would they use it if they thought it was buggy or bad?
You are going to have to configure your phone no matter what. You will get (if the mods let this thread stay open) many opinions (just like the zillions of other threads that ask this question) from people who have not gotten tired of answering it.
The only way to find out what you like and what is non-buggy in your opinon you are actually going to have to download and try each of the ROM's.
Sorry - I wish it were simpler than that - but it isn't.
Two posts and you have already violated a rule this is not going to go well obiwan!
The rule:
If you post a redundant thread, SPAM, flame or violate any rules. Your thread will be closed or deleted without warning. Useless threads like those that address an issue such as "Which ROM is the best," "Kaiser vs iPhone," or "Kaiser Killer" will be closed. You could also be banned for violating the rules.
To find a list of the rules:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=378
You state you have read a lot - I believe you - there is a lot to read. But - you are going to need to read even more to make yourself happy I am afraid.
Thanks for the input - that's why I was/am looking for stat's/results/screen shots of benchmarks, etc - just the facts.
The best way to find the answer to your question is to read the rom's threats, put the doubts about the rom's there and flashed then.
And you'll be a flash addicted like me.
This one screams...its the fastest one I have found yet......and the memory...oh the memory available is the best yet too. Give his one a try.

sorry if this has been said before, but it would be easier if there were 2 forums for the 2 different Sapphire types.

+1 I agree with you.
I agree too!
+1 This would be great. Even if the posts could be tagged 32A or 32B
Agreed!
Save some confusion.
quite agree with you!!
not sure why this is necessary if ROM creators tag their threads with the correct version.
Well they need to tag it at the start, rather than the enb of the title eg.
[32A][ROM][PORT] xxxxxxxx v 4.2.3.1
rather than
[ROM][PORT] xxxxxxxx 32a v4.2.3.1
It makes it much easier to read rather than having it hidden somewhere in the title
Won't be long now and we might get some truly universal roms going.
I know Cyanogen's working towards it.
Until then.. it's not like there's a lot of difference - only two files really.. boot.img and wlan.ko.
If all the rom developers clearly marked their roms as 32a/32b then it wouldn't matter so much.

Exactly my thoughts. There is a big discussion on this and even if this doesn't happen I can't believe that people are so lazy that they don't read the first post of a thread to distinguish if the ROM is 32A or B!!!

Exactly and in the meantime if the forums were separated there's the danger one or the other might miss out on something the other is doing. Much better everyone sees everything.

I don't like this idea: many topic are shared among the two models (all is related to the applications!). Now it is already a mess that I'm loosing great topics on the Dream's forums.
In the next future (I hope) there will be many firmware that can works on both the models (even on the Dream): look at the Cyanogen.
The use of the tags is good enoght!
+1 agree
the rooms must be in separate threads, but maybe the apps must be in only one for all Android mobiles.
Is difficult to know now for what version of Magic is a post (no only roms, also related post answering about)
Now I think is too late.. we just have to organize each others better like suggested before...
Do you imagine the work will have a moderator of this forum moving all the threads?

I don't like the idea because I have to post everything twice when I release something for both sapphire's.
I do like the idea of the tagging the threads.
+1 4 tagging
Better tagging will do the job.

Almost everything is common.
Better tagging, or rather better reading of the tagging is the answer. Most threads are properly tagged, I think the problem is more to do with people not reading the tags/titles properly.
Paying a bit more attention is the answer.
+1 for the guy that says: WTF, just RTF Topiclines a bit better before whining.
If you can't read 32A or 32B, get your eyes examined
To that end, don't visit the forums while drunk, doped or very sleepy, it'll prevent topics like this ever getting started.
Peace out!
Hello all
This is my first post, great forum!
I got my HTC magic yesterday, and I want to root it, to install a ROM.
Here is what I mainly need in a ROM:
-multi-touch
-apps2sd (from the name of it, it installs apps to SD instead of internal memory, correct?)
-I listen to music a lot, so I need a good player in the home screen
-Wi-Fi, sending and receiving files by bluetooth
I figured out the following two were good, but I still hasn't decided which one to go with

or:

Any recommendations are welcome.
Now, i wandered around the forum here, and discovered that there lots of version of the magic, sapphire 32A and 32B, mytouch 3G, and Magic.
My version is the 288MB RAM and the TIM version, what's the name for it?
Knowing my version would help me in following guides.
Now, i have no idea what is the best guide to follow. I have no idea what are the SPLs! Would anyone care to tell me what are they exactly? Is it easy to revert back to the original HTC ROM?
And will I be able to update to Donut and future updates when it's released?
Is the Sense UI coming to the magic in October as rumored?
I thought I ask all my questions before I go around and brick the phone, I'm sorry if i asked questions that were answered before, i browsed through the first bunch of pages and couldn't find any help.
Thank you
one. Go to theunlockr.com and they'll walk you through the basics.
Two. if you have a my touch from t-mobile you most likely have a 32b.
Three. Google is your friend
Four. any other questions you may have are answerable with a tiny bit of research and reading the release notes
Ps I'm on att and had to get my phone from Rogers in canda. I did my research, didn't ask dumb questions and I'm lazy as hell. If I didn't brick my phone you should be fine, just don't try any of the fancy stuff like swaping kernels and radios etc.
Pps the only reason I registered was to respond to your lazy question.

I did not post all those questions because I'm lazy, or because I cant do the research.
I learned a lot from research alone in all fields.
I created this topic, because there were so much info everywhere. An old way, a new way, a doesnt-work-anymore way.
The requirements of the ROMs include a special version of SPL, so I wanted to know what it is exactly.
Thanks for theunlockr.com after all
