Looking at switching from an IPhone to a Winmo device (Touch Pro 2 to be specific) but need to know if some of the applications i use everyday are available. and at what price (if not free)
Shazam:Music Identification. real simple.
Pandora:found a few Cabs around, but no mention of compatibility with WVGA screens.
Urban Spoon: basically a program that uses your current GPS position to locate nearby restaurants.
Fandango/I.TV: shows local theaters, play times. allows purchase of tickets through the program.
Units: quick and easy unit converter.
now, are all these available with a nice finger friendly interface?
thank's for taking your time to help me figure out what all is available.

In my experience with WinMO, simple apps that do only one thing are rare. The iPhone developers are more on that path. With WinMo, you are more likely to find full featured apps. For instance, instead of having an app that will just find the info for a song, you will more likely find a music player with that ability. I think Pocket Music Player (?) can do that. Think more like what kind of apps are out there for windows, you tend to get clones of those for the mobile platform. That is good and bad. For a power user, it is good.
I do know that a good unit converter exists. I for get the name. For a good list of apps, lookup the 2008/2009 smartphone magazine winners and runner-ups for WinMo apps (search google for "best pps apps") and you will find it. It lists a lot of good apps. Also, look up "ppc freeware" for some other good sites.
Shazam exists, do a Google for MusicID, i have a feeling it is only available preinstalled by the carrier but i may well be wrong.
Don't know about the rest.
2- if it is not compatible the graphical layout will be smaller (but in most case it's all right)
3/4- Google maps or the Web do it
5- to many app on the web
D'rath
Yup...
As it's been said, Shazam, and Pandora already exist. I have Shazam MusicID running on my Kaiser on T-Mobile, and it works just fine.
For the other two, why not just use Windows Live (or Bing). Same things all in one app.
http://www.discoverbing.com/mobile/index.html
if you're in love with the iphone UI, then that's one thing. But I'll be real... damn if I understand why one would want to install multiple apps that do simple tasks, when you can have one that does multiple tasks.
To each his own, I s'pose.

the Shazam Application is free? i believe i had heard somewhere it was pay per use.
i believe you underestimate the capabilities of both the Movie application and the "where to eat" application i am asking about. unless Bing can make totally random suggestions about restaurants wherever you are by taking your current GPS location and looking around.
i feel like i will get Smited here for posting this, but this is what i am talking about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTTIpM4L12s
also has reviews, menu, etc. i understand you can find places to eat with a simple google search. but that doesnt work when you have no idea where to start.
with the movie application you have the ability to read reviews, watch trailers, find show times at each theater, location and buy tickets. also has a normal TV guide. but i do not use that often. or can you easily do all this through the internet browser or other means?
i fear i may sound like a "Fanboy" for the IPhone, but i really am tired of the phones lackluster hardware and generally slow performance, and the less then appealing battery life.
but i do like these applications VERY much. they may only do one thing, but they do them extremely well. that's why i want to know if they are available on this platform because i am very interested in getting a Touch Pro2 when they become available.
As is typical with iphone vs WM, the iphone apps are going to look prettier. But the same things do, or can exist on WM.
I got Music ID here in the development & hacking section, for free. And it works fine on my Kaiser.
I *think* you can get movie reviews on Bing... I THINK! But I know you can find them, and get info about them, and where they're playing.
But it can get you random restaraunts from around you based on your gps, or cell tower location. You can find "restaurant" by typing, or speaking it.
for movie showtimes at nearby theateres, you can lookinto "flix" or "cinemo." flix is for the uk, franc, germany and soon to be for italy and spain too. Cinemo is for the US and Canada. They don't let you buy tickets, but they provide useful info. Both are hosted on this site, so look for it in the development and hacking forum.

finger friendly is rare in winmo as of now...
one more question, when using google maps, (or TomTom, etc) can the program pull address information from contacts?
say im in google maps can i just start typing "current location" in the "start" and have it figure out i mean where i am now? and for the "End" can i just start typing my contacts name and have it automatically enter my contacts address?
and when viewing a contact, can i just click their address and have it automatically pull up Google maps (or any other navigation application) and show me that location?

You can do the former, though not quite as you describe. You click the menu, go to Options and choose "Look up Contact". It then lists your contacts that have address info and will pop up the map to them and give you several options.
The latter you can't do with the built in Windows contact manager, but their might be a 3rd party one that can interface with Google Maps, I don't know.

I think you're underestimating the Bing app. It's not just a web search. The Bing mobile app uses GPS or cell towers to locate you, and then offers local search for restaurants, gas prices, theatre / showtime listings, local businesses. It also gives local weather and traffic reports, AND has a GPS mapping app to give you directions to anywhere you find. And it can even do location-based web searches, pulling up wikipedia articles or news items about places you're near. And the whole thing is built with a finger-friendly interface (although it's still rough around some edges). Heck, it's even got voice-command -- click the "speak" button, say "sushi," and it'll list the nearest sushi places.
Bing might not have every last feature of Urban Spoon or the showtimes app you're talking about, but it certainly has a lot of power of its own.

I am using the standard contacts app and have options for locating in Google maps, Bing (formerly live search), and Garmin XT. Garmin has a sub menu with locate and route to.
If you are running Google maps and you don't have 'locate in Google maps' in the menu for contacts let me know. I would like to find out what put it there.
By the way, as floatingfatman said, you can look up conacts in your mapping app. I can do this in Google maps, Bing, Garmin XT and Destinator.
Midomi is alot easier on the eyes than Musicid. As far as UrbanSpoon I wish there was an app for Winmo, but Bing is the next best thing. With emulators and all is there anyway to get it working on Winmo devices?
I have the touchpro2
midomi is a seems to be a really good app and it's free. it gives you the option to listen to a sample of the song, search youtube or buy the song. you could also hum or sing the song to start the search.
This is much more finger friendly than past versions of winmo. I'm sure it's still not up there with the iphone as far as that goes but it's getting a lot closer.
New in the Android Market is an App called Tesco Locator. Shows your nearest stores by distance (By GPS, or search for other city), with opening hours, store facilities & maps and directions.
Please download, and let me know what you think. New features coming soon.
Just too good app. Don't know how I managed without it so far... Keep up the good work!
Cheers / Raj
Thanks Raj,
There will be a minor update this weekend, and hopefully some added functionality before the end of April. We're actively looking for ways to improve the app, so if there's anything you'd like to see, we're open to suggestions!
If people could add ratings on the market as well it would be much appreciated!
Change it to Supermarket Locator and add Asda, Sainsburys etc into the mix
Now that would be a nice app lol

agreed! =]
For some reason, I can no longer to my online shopping from my N1. I've tried it from a variety of different ROM's and even got others to try too... it would appear Tesco is blocking us? The page just wont load, although the exact same url loads fine on my PC.
So, make this app so it works in conjunction with their online delivery ordering and it would be a winner. Scan a products barcode and then press 'add to shopping list' would make this an awesome app.
I e-mailed all the major online grocery shops a month or so ago, no-one was interested in an Android app and it almost makes me angry. Everyone loves the iPhone, but give it a couple more months and Android will be the dominant online mobile device (right now it's actually almost even!)
**Double post**
Thanks for all of your feedback.
In response to the Supermarket Locator, this is something we are currently looking into as a possibility. It has always been on our agenda to open this project up to the other supermarkets, and hopefully we can make this happen in the not too distant future.
AndyCr15 - That's definitely something which is being actively pursued. We have a few ideas for future development of the Tesco specific app, and we are investigating the best way to get the information and functionality onto the Android platform. Product searching is a mammoth area, so I cant promise anything immediately, but it is happening!
There will be another release in the next couple of weeks, with a new feature or two, and some code fixes for efficiency, and hopefully we'll be able to release regular updates and new features.
Hi there,
is it possible to get the application outside the UK? I live in Germany and it doesn't show up on the market (Android 2.1/ Samsung Galaxy Spica/ Portal). I will be coming to the Uk shortly and I just wanted to give it a test.
Cheers, Patrick
Hi,
At the moment our Locator is only for UK stores, and as such we've limited it's availability to the UK. We didn't really envisage a need for it to be included in other markets!
The GPS based location finder wouldn't be very useful from abroad, but there is a text search field as well, so I'm sure it will be of some use. Will you have a data plan or WiFi access whilst in the UK, as this is necessary to obtain the store details and maps etc.
Could you send an email to [email protected], so that if we dont choose to open it up to other markets, I can at least give you the apk to install?
Whats the source of the gps data for this?
Only asking because I normally use google maps for this sort of thing, but their data is imprecise and can be quite a way off.
I was looking for a B&Q the other day and maps showed a cluster of three - none of which were located correctly, satelite view and streetview confirmed this.
If your data source is better than google's you could be onto a winner.
BTW I just checked my local tesco in gmaps and its about 400metres off, in the wrong road in somebodies back garden!
I would guess he's used Google's data. Do you really think he's been able to go round to thousands of Tesco's to check? I could be wrong of course
Hi guys, pjmurphy123 is away this weekend but I also developed the app with him.
I can confirm that the locations (latitude and longitude) of the stores are supplied by Tesco along with the actual address, postcode and phone number if available.
This should result in our app providing you with more accurate results than using google maps.
Hope this helps
[email protected]
Okay, cool I wonder where Google Maps get there location data from then?
Just to let any followers of this thread know, that we have released an update for this app over the weekend, allowing the scanning and storing of your Tesco Clubcard, which can then be scanned by till operatives direct from your phone.
I hope that this feature adds some value to the app for a few people. There are some other features which will hopefully be available to be released in the next week or so, so keep your eyes open for that.
If you do find the app useful, please can you add some ratings or feedback on the Android Market.
New version uploaded allowing shortcut to Clubcard to be placed on to Android home screen.
Thinking of adding in shopping list functionality next.
Interested in peoples thoughts/feature requests
Hello everyone,
I've been working on an app for the past couple of months. It's called Out of Milk and it is an intuitive and easy-to-use Shopping List, Spice Rack and To-Do List app. This is my first Android app, so any feedback is welcomed. I just released v1.3 to the Market (the first public version was 1.2 and it hit the Market last week for the first time). Android 1.5 and up are supported.
I've spent a lot of time making this app intuitive, easy, simple. Here is a summary of the feature from the Out of Milk website
V2.0.9/V2.0.10 Update:
This release focused more on getting our Pro features out there. Our next releases will be a little more balanced as far as free/Pro features are concerned. We plan on add lots of features to the free still.
Feature: Ability to specify a product as tax free. Out of Milk will remember this in the product history so that the next time around this item will be tax free automatically.
Enhancement: Spanish language support.
Feature: Sync/backup your list with our servers. (Pro only)
Feature: Manage your lists online on our website (http://outofmilkapp.com/) (Pro only)
Feature: Real-time list sharing with other Pro users. (Pro only)
Feature: Widget. (Pro only)
Feature: Ability to enter coupon information. (Pro only)
Pro stuff can be unlocked by installing the Out of Milk Pro Unlocker.
V1.6.2 Update:
Enhancement: Barcode scanner now recognizes more items that it did before.
Feature: Manage Product History. You can now manually add items to the Product History. This comes in handy for those who would like to setup their Product History manually.
Feature: Move items between Shopping Lists and Pantry Lists. Prior to the update you could only move items between Shopping Lists and only between Pantry Lists. Now it is possible to move an item that is in the Shopping List to the Pantry List and vice versa.
Feature: Scan items in the Pantry List. It uses the same scanner as the Shopping List.
Feature: Quantity and unit is now available on the Pantry List items.
Feature: Out of Milk comes with a barcode scanner included and no longer depends on the Barcode Scanner app from ZXing.
Enhancement: Menu icons don’t look blurry in Android 2.3
Enhancement: Various bug fixes and other improvements.
V1.5.1 Update:
Feature: The Spice Rack has been turned into a Pantry List. You can now have multiple Spice Racks. You can also create lists of essential items such as flour, sugar, etc... which aren't spices.
Feature: More complex editing screen. The Shopping List, To-Do List and Pantry List items can now be edited in a more complex screen that allows for more information to be edited.
Feature: Ability to set the quantity and unit. Current supported units are: lbs, oz, kg, g, L. If you think you might need another unit, let us know and we'll add it.
Feature: Ability to set the price on products. This can help users save money when shopping. The total amount of the list will be displayed at the bottom of the list. Out of Milk will remember the price for the next time you enter the same item. You can also specify a general sales tax in the Settings screen so that the total with taxes is also display. The total with taxes isn't accurate since not all grocery items necessarily taxed. For example in Florida, water and medications aren't taxed. We plan on expanding the price feature in the future.
Feature: Ability to set a reminder for To-Do list items. This has been a feature requested by a lot of users. Out of Milk will remind you by notification on the date and time you've set. There's also a snooze functionality that allows you to snooze the event for 9 minutes (this is configurable in the Settings).
Feature: Using a slider that ranges from empty to full, you can now set an approximate amount for Pantry List items.
Feature: We've added a Note text box to Shopping List, To-Do List, and Pantry List items. It's optional and you can just put in whatever notes you need.
Enhancement: Some users didn't like having their Shopping List sortable. They would have rather have it be sorted alphabetically. We added the ability to have the Shopping List, To-Do List and Pantry List sorted alphabetically.
Enhancement: We've improved Out of Milk's speed despite having added tons of features. Some of the slow parts of Out of Milk have had their speed increase by a factor of 3-4.
Enhancement: Lots of new Settings and configurations.
Bugfix: Keyboard doesn't pop up when editing an item.
Bugfix: "Add from History" list is sorted alphabetically.
V1.4.3 Update:
Speech-to-Text for phones that support it.
Enabled App2SD for Android 2.2.
Updated the UI a bit (no more cancel button, just click back or Done on the keyboard to dismiss the textbox)
Minor bug fix.
V1.4 Update:
Adding items is much quicker and smoother than before. Keyboard automatically opens now when adding new items.
Shopping List History: All items you add are saved to the history. If you scan a barcode and the product could not be found, then the item you typed in will be saved the next time that barcode is scanned again. You can also view the list of history items and add them to the list.
Ability to pick a smaller font size for all lists. To change the font size, press the Menu button on your phone on the main Out of Milk screen, then pick the Settings menu item. There you can set the font size for list items.
Cross-out/Uncross-out all items in a list.
Support for German, French and Dutch locale.
V1.3 Update:
Take your Shopping Lists with you everywhere in an intuitive and easy-to-use package.
Scan products directly into your Shopping Lists using the integration with Barcode Scanner.
An auto-complete database makes adding grocery items a breeze.
The digital Spice Rack means you always know what spices are in your spice cabinet.
The To-Do List lets you add and keep track of any other items on your daily list.
Multiple Shopping Lists and To-Do Lists.
Share your Shopping Lists and To-Do Lists by email or text message.
Reorder your list items on the fly.
Let me know what you think and what could be improved upon. Thanks!
This is a really nice app. Way better than the one I was using. Great job on this. The barcode scanner is an awesome touch.
Awesome app. Very easy to use
I like the idea of having a virtual Spice Rack, reminds me of Shelves which I use for movies.

Thanks. That's the idea. Whenever I was at the grocery store I could never remember if I already had a spice in the spice rack. This solves the problem. I'm thinking of turning the entire spice rack into a pantry with predefined lists such as "Spice Rack", "Dry Goods", etc... That way you can inventory your entire pantry (since it's stuff that doesn't change often)

Very slick app. I like it a lot. I've tried a bunch of apps for this very reason and it looks like I'll be sticking with this one. The virtual pantry idea sounds like an excellent item.
For the lazy, if there was a way for us to take a picture of our pantry and tag it on a list as a list by itself, that'd save some time.

Great App. We (My wife and I) love it!
Suggestion: Would be awesome to be able to share list from OOM to OOM. So that I could use the Done option from the list my wife sends me.
Really nice app. I think I will use it in the future.
One thing. How does the barcode scanner work? I mean.. with what kind of codes/database.
I'm asking, as I scanned some products and nothing was recognized:
book: Lord of the Rings
gummy bears
PS3 game: GTA4
Edit:
Ok, just tested it again and now at least GTA4 is found. And a bottle of Pepsi.
Don't know what the problem was in the first time.
However, I'm still interested in what database is used, as e.g. the gummy bears still are unknown.
Just a suggestion...
What about using a form in Google Docs to allow sharing between multiple devices? You could populate our Google Docs with the required field and then we could share it among those allowed within Google Docs.
Just a suggestion.
Widget would be great but I'll have to wait to switch until you add multi user editable lists. The app I use now isn't perfect but bring able to share an editable list within the app with my wife is key
UI is very good.
I have one suggestion to make which i have not seen on any shopping list apps.
Share Shopping list via Email or text message but with the same format.
let me give an example
my wife makes the list and emails me the list (if it can be a attachment) and then i download it and open it via your app then i can see the same list just like the way it was created and not as a unformatted list in the email...
is that possible?
lovely app, has the potential to overthrone Astrid Task as my main to-do app, grat work!

Hi, thanks for the feedback !
I was already looking for a solution to scan barcode. But I didn't found a solution to manage barcodes in the world.
EAN are mainly for European products. For example, if it doesn't work for an US product it's not interesting.
I will have a look to Zxing lib.
I was thinking, if the user takes a picture of the barcode, he will just get the product name ? Maybe the price.
Expiry dates and picture of the product are not linked with barcode.
So, I am not sure that user earn time by taking a picture just to avoid to enter the product name.

I was thinking, if the user takes a picture of the barcode, he will just get the product name ? Maybe the price.
Expiry dates and picture of the product are not linked with barcode.
So, I am not sure that user earn time by taking a picture just to avoid to enter the product name.

I mean only the number, perhaps later you can get information from this.
For Germany you can use this database:
http://opengtindb.org/index.php
Thanks for the url !
Only the number is not interesting in my opinion.
If I can get the product name it's more useful, I am looking for others db with barcode/product name.
Ideally one global, to avoid request many urls.
