No Drag Select in WM6 and Multiple Dropdown menu? - General Questions and Answers

Hello.
Coming from using Wm2003 I remember that on File Explorer, you could press down and then drag across the screen to select files. On my device (Its a generic PDA) that I purchased it is running WM6.1. On file explorer you cannot press down and drag to select multiple Items. Sure there is other ways but I really liked it how on wm2003 you can pressdown and then drag the stylus across the screen to select multiple items.
Does anybody know of any registry tweaks that can be used or settings that can enable this?
I have tried Resco file explorer but that doesn't have that feature either, instead you have to go to multiple file select mode which itself is rather time consuming compared to dragging to select.
The second question. I really liked it how WM2003 had separate dropdown menus' at the bottom. But on Windows Mobile 5/6 there is only ever 1 or 2 dropdown menus down the bottom. Most of the times one of them is "MENU" and you have to select that to get a dropdown menu to access all the other dropdwon menu's, In wm2003 they would be all visible separately.
Is there any tweaks to change this?
I am using WM6.1 01.001.1
ROM DATE 12/3/2009
Thankyou.

File explorer: It works fine on my WM6.1. If you have HTC device with TouchFLO scrolling, you have to press and hold for a short time and then drag (just before the tap-hold dots start appearing). BTW I recommend using Total Commander, because there are more ways how to select multiple items - by hold and drag or by pressing the ctrl button on toolbar and then just tap what you want to select.

It's not a HTC Device but a generic device out of china running a 6.1 ROM. If I hold on the Item it just right clicks it and brings the dropdown menu up.
I'm not sure if I have touchflo or not, something tells me I do as the touch behaviour is different to other PPC's i've used.
Let me explain. It acts like a Piece of paper. On any program that has a scrollbar, if I put the stylus in the middle of the screen, then drag stylus upward, the contents from the bottom of the page begins to show (Exactly if you have a long piece of paper and you put your finger down on it and push it upward) Here is a Video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxqYLX2X7iE
So as we see above when i drag stylus across the items it doesnt select them all, it just scrolls up and down!
Maybe there was different versions of file manager and some dont support dragging to select multiple items?

This is very difficult for me to describe, but every finger-scrolling software I've ever tried was some kind of "layer" on the screen. If you drag, the gesture is recognized by the "layer" and scroll is performed. If you tap and hold for very short while, the input is sent under the layer to the active program. So if you tap and hold for a while until the item is selected (highlighted) and then quickly drag, you should be able to select more items. But don't hold for too long time as it brings the dropdown menu.
I don't know if I'm clear enough, so I'll describe what happens when you tap and hold.
1. Scrolling software handles input and checks if you are dragging.
2. If you're not dragging and the drag-checking timeout has expired (usually something about 200ms), the input is sent to active program (file explorer).
3. So we've got the input in file explorer, the item under stylus should highlight.
4. This is the moment we should start dragging to select more items, because the dots signalizing you're opening dropdown menu start appearing and if you don't start dragging until all dots appear, the dropdown menu shows.
So it means you can do multiple actions with tap/hold/drag according to how long you hold the stylus down. If you just drag, it scrolls. If you hold for very short while (about 200ms) and drag, it should select more items. If you hold for longer while, it brings the menu.
EDIT: I'd like to show you, but I don't have any camera, only on my device

I tried your suggestion, does not work.
The dots begin appearing then i quickly goto drag, then the screen just scrolls up/down the items and dropdown doesnt appear, but no selected items, it doesnt select them just scrolls up/down the window

Strange, because this is how WM6.5 behave, not WM6.1. I'm sorry, but I think I cannot help you

Thanks for the help anyway.
It's weird, also when i drag across the screen then it begins scrolling, if I quickly take the stylus of the screen it will scroll for just a bit more then gradually slow down, like some sort of scrolling type interface.
Does anybody know what this could be?
Whether it's something that some WM6.1 Versions had? or whether it's something that Somebody has added onto this ROM? Is the UI action defined in any file that I can just change on the Windows folder with another file? Anyway to get rid of it?
Thanks.

I think you should just try another ROM as it seems to be somehow hardcoded in this one.

Problem is I'm not using one of the devices listed in the xda-developers site, it's a generic phone.
So there isn't any roms for it right?
I don't even know how to put it into diagnostic mode (to flash)

Click to collapse
It's possible in the Details view, there you can drag on the left side to select multiple files.

Livven: That's true I forgot it, that's one of main things I'm not using Resco Explorer - I hated that sometimes it scrolls and sometimes it selects items (usually when I use device with my left hand) Anyway, I still recommend Total Commander because of its ctrl button and virtual 2 windowed mode - best comfort for manipulating with files

You can change it to Big Icons view, then it'll always scroll. I did the same.

[TIP] single press windows key -> taskmanager/programs/settings

I've been looking for this for some time, and I read several threads with ideas (like aebplus), but now: eureka!
Quickmenu 2.8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340352) can be configured to use a SINGLE press on the windows key to make it popup; it then shows a task switcher, programs and settings shortcuts. NICE
no more fiddling in the left or right corner of a screen, or holding the send button down for some time (was using Touch X's solution until now).
[EDIT] just got a very good question in my inbox, so a little more info:
the windows HARDWARE button doesn't display the default programs menu anymore... instead, when pressed, a Quickmenu popup is visible in the top-left corner. you can select a running app. in the list also Quickmenu/favorites/recent/Programs/Settings directly accessible. Pressing the HARDWARE windows button again, closes the popup.
If you press the windows LOGO on the bottom left corner of the home screen (sorry 28xxx builds only), the default Programs menu is displayed.
[/EDIT]

quicklink noob

Quick question, I flashed the "Cookie, Energy" rom, latest version and previous versions. On the home screen with the clock, I press and hold my stylus on a blank quick link box. A new menu appears to select a program. Sometimes I select a program by error. How do I either change the program or delete it? In edit mode, I tried pressing the icon, a small menu appears with a "delete" command selection, if I select this the entire row is deleted. I want to know how to modify each quicklink in a row.
If you're using a Cookies Home Tab ROM, on your Home Tab, press the RIGHT Softkey.
From the context menu that pops up, tap "Edit Quick Links". From here, you can add more shortcuts, or remove shortcuts already there. To remove already placed shortcuts, just tap on them. You'll notice a small "X" that appears on top of the icons you tapped on. Once you click 'Done' the links you tapped on, with the X on them, will no longer be visible.

Broken Capacitive Button Workaround!

Alright, the Galaxy series, although awesome, suffers from some issues. None are as frustrating as when the damn capacitive (bottom) buttons stop working!
Normally it seems that all four bottom buttons don't fail at the same time, just one or two. This doesn't seem to be as much of a physical problem as a software one, probably an application running in the forefront that is blocking them. Now it is hard to do much of anything if the settings button (left side) fails, as you cannot access most settings for your apps. Both my outside buttons rarely work, the aforementioned settings button (left) and the search button (right). Search button doesn't matter to me, I can call up search on screen easily enough. The other two are home and back buttons. Back is more necessary than home. So to work around this Samsung-induced-pain-in-the-ass, I swapped the search button function for the home.
Here's how:
Make sure you are roted and have a rooted file manager. Root Explorer tends to work best.
1. Open Root Explorer, and make sure it is mounted r/w.
2. Navigate to /system, /usr, /keylayout.
3. Tap/hold Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl, and select 'Open in Text Editor'. If you get a Warning message, that means you are mounted r/o so you just need to click the Mount R/W button above.
4. Change key 139 to read HOME instead of MENU.
Change key 102 to read MENU instead of HOME.
Hit the back capacitive button and choose to save. It will create a Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl.bak file also so if you want to undo this then just erase the new Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl file and then erase the .bak off the other file.
5. Now open the melfas_touchkey.kl file the same way by holding it until it allows you to select 'Open in Text Editor'.
Change key 139 to read HOME instead of MENU.
Change key 102 to read MENU instead of HOME.
Hit the back capacitive button and choose to save. It will also create a .bak file.
6. Open the qwerty.kl file by holding it until it allows you to select 'Open in Text Editor'.
Change key 102 to read MENU instead of HOME.
Change key 139 to read HOME instead of MENU.
Hit the back capacitive button and choose to save. It will again create a .bak file.
7. Back out of Root Explorer and restart your phone.
Now, when you push your home button it will bring up your settings menu in whatever application is open, and your settings button will do the home function (or nothing, as my outside buttons do as they don't usually work). I now use my back button to get me to home, it just takes a few more pushes as it goes one step at a time. Not as much of a pain as not being able to set program functions, that's for sure!
Note: Depending on your setup, the file names might be slightly different on other Android devices, but they will always be very similar. They'll all have a bluetooth.kl, touchkey.kl and qwerty.kl (or whatever your keyboard layout might be). You can also fool around with other key settings if you wish to experiment, depending on what is and is not working at the current time. Just save your original .bak files so you can put it back to normal easily. If you alter the .kl file more than once, it will overwrite the .bak file again (which is not used by the phone) so make sure you copy the .bak's to another directory (such as /sdcard/backups or your regular computer).
Hope this makes your lives easier and don't forget to thank me if I helped you.
Modified Home key acting up
So after using this mod for a little while, it has been working well except for some slight stalling of response from the capacitive buttons (which was happening before the mod) and an awfully annoying habit of backing out of programs by itself due to the modified left button which was originally Settings but I changed to Home with the above mod. When this happens, I can see the left button go dark as if it's been physically pressed, so obviously there is some electrical or software malfeasance happening there.
The fix to this problem is to navigate to your /system/usr/keylayout folder again and:
Delete: "key 139 HOME"
In each of these three folders we altered earlier:
Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl
melfas_touchkey.kl
qwerty.kl
The result is that no action is associated with the leftmost capacitive button, which is fine because it wasn't working properly in the first place. This was becoming problematic as I typed in Terminal or while using my Ubuntu build on the phone.
Now, if there was also a problem with the search popping up by itself then you would just have to delete "key 217 SEARCH". Remember why I initially did this was because the outside capacitive buttons were not functioning properly and I needed the settings button more than home while in programs.
Fully Functioning Capacitive Button Workaround
I actually found a specific need for the home key.
When in Terminal Emulator, if I want to back out to the main screen and access another application, I have to use my back button. Trouble is, the back button also closes out the terminal session, which is a pain in the *ss if I want to just look up something in my browser and then go back to it. I have to then restart my session and retype on the small as hell keyboard. So I was thinking, how am I going to implement a home key function in my drop-down start menu which is always accessible and low-and-behold, here it is:
SoftKeys for Root Users
https://market.android.com/details?...EsIm5ldC5ob29wYWpvby5hbmRyb2lkLlNvZnRLZXlzIl0.
This is a great app. Solves the problem. Starts immediately on boot.
There's also this for just a home key in the start menu drop-down, no start on boot though:
BK Softhome
https://market.android.com/search?q=bk+softhome&c=apps
Problems solved! I now have disabled all 4 capacitive buttons while using Softkeys for Root Users for all functions. (Delete: key 102, key 139, key 158, and key 217 in all three folders listed in original post)

[GUIDE] Using Gestures to easily navigate the P2 with just one hand (requires root)

Even though the P2 can be considered large with a 5.5" display, the lower region of the screen is occupied by the on-screen navigation bar. While there's an option to turn off the navigation bar and use the fingerprint button exclusively, I still find this alternative lacking in many fronts:
1. I can't tell you how many times I return to the home daily; it gets tiring to always have to push down the fingerprint button.
2. You need to touch the fingerprint button for a second or so before the recent apps window is launched. If you've ever had the need to flip between apps quickly, you would know how irritating this delay is.
3. Because one button is used for three functions (back, home, recent apps), there's no way to quickly switch between apps (like alt+tab in windows).
4. I sometimes find myself lying on my side, holding the phone with one hand, and finding it almost impossible to reach all the way down to the navigation bar, let alone the fingerprint button.
Fortunately, I have a solution that I believe addresses all of the problems above and that is to navigate the phone through the use of gestures.
I've been using GMD GestureControl for about a week now and I think I've found an optimal combination of gestures that don't only work but are also intuitive to use. There's nothing you can lose by giving it a try.
It can take a bit of time to set it up the way I have mine set up. So, if you don't feel like spending some time doing it yourself, you can just "restore" my "titanium backup" backup. Download it from here. Just extract the zip file and copy the content into your "titanium backup" folder. Open "titanium backup" and restore.
If instead, you would like to set it up yourself, here's how I currently have mine set up:
1. After installing the app, the first thing to do is go to "Device Setup" by pressing the menu button on the top right corner of the screen. Change your values to the one you see in the first attached image below. Then go to "Settings", and change the values to those in the second attached image.
2. To create a gesture: press the plus button > Select a gesture > create path. You can see all the gestures I created in the third attached image. Recreate all of them.
3. You can decide which region of the screen a gesture is detected by choosing the appropriate zone in the "select starting zone" option.
4. You need to go to "advanced options" (attached image no. 4) at the bottom of the screen to decide whether or not the gesture can be triggered when the keyboard is active. I have most of the gestures disabled when the keyboard is active because I sometimes swipe to type and I don't want to accidental swipe to trigger something. For this reason, I have duplicated most of the gestures for the only the top half of the screen (above the keyboard) so that the gestures still continue to work when the keyboard is activated.
5. Make sure you enable "evaluate on release" on all gestures so that a gesture is only triggered after you lift your finger off the screen.
If you've gone through all the steps, it's now time to start trying things:
1. To open resent apps, just make a small ^ sign anywhere on the screen.
2. To go home, just make a small V sign anywhere on the screen.
3. To flip between apps, just make a small < or > sign anywhere on the screen, starting from the top.
4. To press back, swipe away from left or the right edge.
5. To open the launchpad, swipe up on the left or right edge.
Good looking out. I really like this option.
