free finger-friendly file manager? - General Questions and Answers

Any suggestions for a free finger-friendly file manager?
I'd like to be able to select multiple non-contiguous files for copy/move/delete. I'm thinking that it would be good to have check boxes, so that you could browse through your files, tap the check box for those that you want to copy/move/delete, then tap and hold to copy/move/delete. Is there anything like that.

Hi on freewarepocketpc.net there is a application called The Tool V 1.00 perhaps this one is good for you.
But a application with checkboxes i don´t know...
Other explorers are:
- Total Commander (NOT FINGERFRIENDLY BUT CAN COPY SYSTEM FILES)
- GSlide (FINGERFRIENDLY BUT SLOW- on my OLD 300 Mhz Device)
...

The only file manager with check boxes that is finger-friendly (if you set it that way) that I can think of is the new file managing tool in SK Tools. You have to pay for it, but you may already have it but haven't upgraded recently. I wouldn't say it's a great file manager, but the check boxes do come in handy occasionally. Personally, I use tota commander for almost everything.

Resco File Explorer has checkboxes, but isn't free too.

Is it possible to change the name of an application?

Hello I was browsing the forums to find the remote desktop application which comes with windows mobile 6.1 since it was not included in my brand new HTC Touch Pro (don't know why HTC decided to remove it in the first place) and I found a cab file in one of the threads. However when I installed the application is listed as "wpctsc" in the programs menu.
Is there a way to rename it (probably through registry) intro something that makes a little more sense?
I don`t know if it works with regular File Explorer, but Total Commander allows you to go in the Windows > Start Menu > and there is a list of applications which you can see in Start Menu and in Programs Menu, just scroll in the application you want to rename and vòila ? Do not remove .Ink from the filename.. >_>
Thank you very much that worked great!!!

Opening *.txt files

Hi to all. First of all, I've tried to search but I got to ask since I can't find this topic anywhere.
Ok. Does anybody know how I can open a file with the extension *.txt with my preferred program? When I click directly on the filename, the text is opened in Word Mobile. I would like to just click the filename and don't open my application before I can edit my file. I'm using another application that I prefer for editing my txt files. All suggestions are welcome
use total commander to associate file extensions with programs if your pref
or do it manually using a reg-editor
Thanks for the reply. But if I associate from TC, it still open with MW when I start any txt file from todayscreen, (from within PocketPlus). I suppose that using the TC only work when you open from TC? So I'll try to use a reg.edit. and see what happens. Thanks again.
you can use Schap's Advanced Configuation and change file associations..
I've tried Adv Conf 3.3, but still the Mobile Word opens my txt files
what do you use to open them? you might have specific file associations in your file browser.
what about resco explorer? it works to fix this problem in my device
I prefer the NeboPad, and the registry sais that my txt files should be opened with NeboPad. It seems that MS override this, during the copyright
this is impossible. assiciations are set via OS.. if you set a specific association in Adv Config.. it'll work for the OS unless you're using a file manager that opens using its own preferences. try another file explorer like Resco
I'm running it from Spb Pocket Plus and not from any file explorer. In the Advanced Configuration 3.3 it's stated that file with the extension of *.txt, should be opened with \Program Files\NeboPad\NeboPad.exe. But still it's opened with Mobile Word. I think I'll have to go back to Notes with the *.pwi extension. Anyway, thank's for trying.
Regards
if you use notes and it works thru Spb Pocket Plus it means that this NeboPad is the problem, not your association.

Well. I've tried a lot of editors and pad programs by this time, but every time I try to open a TXT file, it comes up in PWORD. This must be something in the OS itself I belive. Or has anyone managed it to work?
At last!
Finally I've found a program that's works. It's MobilePad (nice too).

How can I make HTCAlbum open files?

I've associated the program with my files (pics/.mp4) but when I click on them to open from TC they don't open they go to album view then I have to navigate back to them. Is there a fix?
you mean thru M2D?
no in Total Commander or File Explorer, also I wanted to create a shortcut to automatically open a file when I click it, but instead it open album in libary/album mode
get SKTools and got to file associations menu. SKTools is not FREE. Buy It! I am not promoting you to get warez!
Well, all associations can be performed thru Adv. Config. (or as mohamed offered, SKTools, tho it'll expire at some point).
I know some people had problems with associations using TotalCommander
try resco explorer AFTER associating using one of the above applications.

WinMobile PPC Crasher Fixer upper - Stabilize your PPC - Fix

<Please note that this was done on a ppc with windows mobile 2003 - Ipaq H1945, however since this tip is NOT really device specific - it should work across the board with ANY windows mobile device...>
If you are experiencing slowness, crashes, and more horrific things on your ppc, etc.., it could be a problem with Multiple gx.dlls - that's right - if you have games, etc.. Each may have have their own gx.dll, which overall slows down the system, creates crashes, etc.. So how do we fix this?
By hacks, etc.. I mean Registry Tweaks, hack utilities, etc..., However we will replace ONE file - the gx.dll for one I found to be more stable from astraware's game glyph...
First, and foremost Backup your device...
Then download Total Commander - http://www.ghisler.com/
From there - Open up Total Commander - you should be on folder / or basically the root folder - please keep the storage card intact, and if necessary repeat the following if one has multiple cards, etc...
Next open up the menu File - and select Find Files
In the Search Box type without quotes "gx.dll", when done click ok, search, etc...
Now when it's done - in the upper Right corner there is a button named ctrl, click it. Now select one by one all the gx.dll files you see except for the one in the windows folder. After which go to file - Delete - click ok/yes to continue...
Reboot your ppc...
After Which - download the gx.zip attachment below. Unzip...
Now hook up your ppc to your computer - open up My Computer - Windows Mobile - Windows. From there replace the gx.dll file, and overwrite with the one you unzipped. Reboot your ppc...
After this little handy tweak - Graphics should stablize, system should become more stable - quicker speed, etc...

Best one there is!
+1 for both Astro and Root Explorer
Sent from a piece of ginger bread
I use astro and root explorer together.
I love the user friendly interface of astro and its amazing app manager.
The only thing that makes me use root explorer is.. well the root aspect astro can't explore the phone's root.
I use FileGo
It's not a popular one,..due to people not understanding how it work I think (many comments say it doesnt have copy/paste),..but I like it more then Astro (which I used till it went pro).
FileGo has 2 explorer windows you can swipe between and drag/drop files for easy copy/paste.
Another nice feature is Catalog button on the bottom which gives you quick access to: SD Card, Processes, Apps, APKs, Music, Pictures.
I'll have to give root explorer a go though, only rooted recently.
I'm a file manager fanatic.
Astro-used this until it went pro
Linda manager- nice explorer
Es explorer - so far my fav
Super manager - decent, its free and allows you to explore root ... its also a task manager... its GUI is a bit unsavory and its a memory hog (28mb RAM)
Ghost commander - similar to total commander on the PC. Allows 2 pane exploring and with its update added experimental root browsing feature.
OI manager - very simple browser
Sent from my futuristic phone
Am i the only one who likes the stock files manager? Unfortunately gingerclone doesn't have it.
edit post: damn i thought i was at the vibrant sections. haha!
ES File Explorer ~ and simply because it allows me to share files with my PC.
Absolutely brilliant....
Since using ESFE I have stopped using USB to connect to my PC for sharing files.
Best three:
1.Astro
2.EStrongs (ES)
3.Dual File Manager (dual view)
first rate for astro!
ES file Explorer is my fav.

Never heard of this one until today. Whoa! This is going to be my staple file manager..beautiful folders, custom icons and classy interface..and it shows apk icons which is a must for me. Nice features in settings.
Also File Expert is nice, advanced features like "use as root explorer"..another one I liked, but can't remember.
Total Commander for Android rules
Total Commander free for Android;

A must have for anyone who's working with TC on PC and a great addition for all who do not use it on PC!
