Hi Guys.
I'm new to the world of Android (Got a Magic yesterday), and I was hoping I could put an Android 1.6 Rom with SenseUI on here for now.
I am in South Africa, and the local HTC agents (LEAF) haven't even given us the 1.5 Update with senseUI.
Unfortunately my SPL is 1.33.0010 which apparently is a Perfect SPL.
Is there a way I can get around to install a decent ROM because I don't feel confident playing around and changing the SPL.
Firstly I don't won't to brick the phone, and secondly, if I'm successful, I don't want to lose my warranty.
I also struggle to understand what is going on with some of the instructions in some threads.
I'd really appreciate your help guys ... perhaps you know something I am missing? I did read the Wiki, and it scared me a bit ... but I'd really like to have some of the features available in new Android versions and also Sense UI, and if & when it comes out, Android 2.1
Regards
Itai

Hi Folks,
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get burnt asking this, but I can't find the answer anywhere.....help!
I've flashed planty of ROMs before (and really appreciate the effort from the folks cookin' 'em) but never 'cooked' my own.
I've got an Orange Branded TyttnII, so I tried the official 6.1 ROM they released recently. I actually really like it and it performs well.
There are a few really annoying things about it though. Like the version of HTCs homescreen they ship doesnt have the music tab, there are apps they install that I'm never going to use etc. etc.
So, I'd love to take the original update (or RUU_signed.nbh from it), pull it apart and make it my own.
I've read and watched everything I can find about cooking and I've done nothin but turn my brain to useless mush....
Please, could someone tell me (or point me in the right direction to find) how I can take this RUU_signed.nbh and rip things (packages, I guess?) out?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I just bought a HTC Magic from Rogers (32A), currently it's using Android 1.5 and I would like to start using Android 2.0 with SenseUI.
There seem to be a LOT of ROMs floating around the forum right now, I have been trying to figure out which one is best but am having a hard time.
So I'd like to ask the veterans here, what is the best choice of ROM when I want to use Android 2.0 with SenseUI? And keeping in mind that preferrably I wouldn't be reflashing my HTC any time soon.
Lastly, any tips for a first time user? Any things I should pay special attention to in the interest of keeping my phone from becoming a brick?
Thanks in advance!
As far as I know there are still lots of things not working with the 2.0 builds with or without senseUI. If you go with one consider it experimental and not great for everyday use. I would personally recommend going with a 1.6 based ROM. Several to choose from, I prefer Dwang's ROM because it is incredibly fast and responsive.
first thing you should pick up on here is BEWARE people suggesting you use the rom they are when thier sidnature shows them using 32b... if your having trouble getting started try the root method on http:\\theunlockr.com for 32a phones.. just always remember to check what each rom is for 32a 32b and/or mytouch

First off, allow me to introduce myself: I'm an 18 year old cook from new orleans and I'm fairly tech savvy. I have an ipod touch and enjoyed hacking the **** out of it, and now I have a G1 and look forward to hacking the hell out of it as well, espcially since android is much more hack friendly and so far I absolutely love it compared to the iphone os.
Ok, so I just downloaded sign-passion-frf50-from-ere27.1e519a24.zip
From what I understand this is Froyo (2.2), which cannot(?) run on the G1.
Can I get this to run on the G1? If not, can I get 2.1 to run on the G1?
If it is possible, but very difficult, please let me know anyway so at least I know what I'm up against.
On this note, what is the process of manually updating the android os anyway?
P.S. I did search before posting this, and nothing seemed to spefically match this post

Even if all Android systems have the same roots, they differs on various devices. This is caused by different hardware specs: CPU architecture, drivers, customizations; and there are some custom add-ons as well: Google apps, Sense UI, etc. This is why it isn't possible to run OS designated for other devices, even if both of them are running "the same" system.
Porting is a process of mixing up bits from both systems to get some features from one device to another. And adding some missing parts. We have to wait for someone to manage to build workable version of Froyo system for G1 devices.
Ahh and there is no problem with 2.1 on G1 - there are plenty of 2.1 roms for this device, I personally recommend CM5.0.7 .
I see. So do you think that froyo will be ported to the g1? Where can I download the roms for the g1? and how do I install them? Is there a way to get sense ui on the g1 after I install CM5.0.7? Thanks for all the help
Well first you will need to root your phone. There is tons of information on that. I'm sure you'll find a guide no problem. Is you want cm5, which I highly recommend as well, go to cyanogenmod.com and look in the forums under experimental. You cannot, however, simply add sense to a rom. It's a lot more complicated than that. There are lots of sense roms though. Check the g1 forum here on xda. As for froyo, time will be popping up soon enough but we're all going to have to wait until the source is released sometime in the next week or two.
Hope that helps,
Samuel Maskell

My daughter has HTC Hero from Sprint running the latest 2.1 version and I wanted to upgrade her phone to 2.2 with all of sprint features like TV etc.
I started to read the forums, looks like there are too many way methods to do things.
Can someone just create a sticky, step by step to newbes on what to do in order to bring the Sprint Hero from 2.1 to 2.2.
which distribution is recommended?
will the upgrade causes a problem with the service?
Get the AOSP Rom, push the sprint apk's using adb.
Its easy..

First off you have to root your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296), then install a custom recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1), then flash the ROM .zip in the recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782320), then flash a kernal in recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756774). This is no easy task since froyo was never released for the hero. good luck and if you have any questions...ask. Once you get that working then you can worry about sprint apps
First you want to do this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
That is called rooting your phone, it's a process which sort of "breaks" the security on the phone, which allows you to do alot more things than usual to your phone. The one thing you want the root to do is allow you to flash a custom ROM (Which is basically a new Operating System for your phone).
If you want a nice, fast, and unthemed 2.2 operating system, than you want to flash this rom on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782320
This is pretty much the OS you want.
Unfortunately you can't do this without a rooted phone. Sprint has left us CDMA users in the dark providing us with no good updates (with the exception of a few bug fixes once in a while), so the Dev's at xda-deelopers have blessed us by creating there own ROM's (Operating Systems) so that we can enjoy the benefits of newer Android Operating Systems.
And if you need a guide to flash a new ROM to your phone, its right here.

Good luck man, it looks overwhelming at first, but it becomes very easy once you get it down.
EDIT ** To answer your question, no it doesn't mess up your Sprint service. In fact, theres a thread somewhere that has a new radio that gives somewhat better signal.
Next time lets learn to read, im not trying to be a **** or nothing but this section is for ANDROID DEVELOPMENT ONLY, i see no dev'ing going on here. Theres seperate sub-forum called "Questions and Answers" just for things like this. Also if you would have search theres tons of stickys for "Noobs". But reason it bothers us the most is theres a sticky up there that says STOP posting non-development crap here and people come do it anyways. Im bothered by it because were all adults here....well most of us....and we have trouble reading.
Sup xda, my names Bilal and this is my first time posting here. I do have a question though but I've got a lot I want to talk to you guys about
I got my tmobile mytouch 3g about 4 days ago. On the first day my cousin had already told me about this site and how beneficial it would be to me real soon xD. The next day I had already begun looking up important things i needed to know to end up with a custom rom on my phone. I looked up the specifications to my phone (like checking the radio and SPL versions) I found out my phone was a 32B and had new SPL and Radio. I found out the Roms that would be compatible with my phone as well as the method to go about doing it. the next 2 days basically consisted of my going through over like 15-20 different methods over my phone (but all of them basically had the same routine). I mean, you have to root it then get a custom recovery than flash the custom rom. But this is simplified as I'm pretty sure i searched and found 3-4 different ways for the simplified root recovery rom steps. Anyways it was real frustrating since I failed many times on all 3 steps . Anyways with the new SPL Radio 32b Mytouch phone 2.2.1 (since i idiotically upgraded it to 2.2.1) just flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0 about 30 minutes ago. Haha I'm so excited to see the possibilities.
I wanted to thank this whole site and the people from the unlockr because i searched a ton of guides and Google'd over 50 questions to figure out the process suited for me and even though it ended being extremely easy compared to the people who had to work hard to develop all the things involved in making Rom Manager, Clockworkmod and Armons Custom recoveries, and every easy step in the process that we take for granted. I didn't have a clue in programming scripting developing software or ROM's for anything before flashing my phone. After doing it I still don't have much of a clue even though I feel like I did learn a whole lot I know I'm way more interested in learning how things work.
You could have probably skipped this whole essay and went straight to the question though xD.
My question at this point was what exactly are all the possibilities (or some that I'm not aware of) that my phone has now that it has flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0
One thing that I have definitely noticed and feel that alone, was worth the 4 days of tirelessly failing, is that my phone has become a lot faster, and I mean in everything that it does, from opening applications to loading videos on youtube. I know I could probably search this as well but I just wanted to advice directed towards me as far as what to do next? Ive been messing around with the themes (can only use ADW as far as I know) but was wonting to find a live unlock pattern screen? I found one on youtube and I'm 90 percent sure the guy had the exact same phone as me. Also any advice on details for upgrading the overall performance on my device would be great help.
Thanks guys glad to be here
Glad that you learned some stuff. Stay around here for a while and you'll learn alot more. Anyways, yes, there are many possibilities available for you. For one, I would advise updating to CyanogenMod 7. Just go here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-slide and choose a category to suit you. NB: The "Experimental" build category is not as "dangerous" as it sound. These build are actually Release Candidates which mean they are almost (if not) good enough to be a Stable build. Since you're just beginning, you may just want to use a stable build for now. But later on, you may change your mind. There are also many apps you may want to try like: SetCPU (to make your device even faster than it is now and/or to save battery life, Titanium Backup, Rom Manager, etc. ADW is NOT the only launcher you can use. It just came as the main launcher for your rom. There are many other launchers like Launcher Pro, etc. For the "live lockscreen pattern, you could try Ripple Lock (Honeycomb Lockscreen) or the sense 3.0 lockscreen found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190071 . Cheers!
