Hi all - subject line says it all.
I have a shiny UK Vodafone Magic turning up tomorrow and, hoping to save a bit of time, wanted to canvas the guys on here regarding their opinions of the best ROM to use on it, before I start experimenting. Have browsed the boards and it seems that the main issue with Hero ROMs is performance on the smaller RAM size. I would like as decent a UI experience as possible, but would prefer not to make my new toy unusably slow in my hunt to get that "hey, wow, shiny" UI factor.
Main important features for me (in order of importance):
* as full featured a browser as is possible
* PDA-type stuff (i.e. calendar etc)
* email, particularly Exchange connectivity
and only then
* shininess of UI!
Would I be best waiting for Jerpelea's new release before playing? Or am I better off leaving well enough alone and staying with the stock ROM (and get my Exchange fix through third party software)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

well mate for stability and performance you have the Ion R4 and European rom for Magic. they are based on google interface with few tweaks. Ion r4 has hero look over google base so its a no brainer why they work so well
the hero ports don't work so well for most but looks amazing my friend. i love the Hero V1.4 by fatal1ty as it looks amazing. for me however it has some major drawbacks main one being the lag. for me also after using for few days it seems to get worse and gradually grinds to a halt. the hero black is very similar to Hero 1.4 with a few apps missing. they woirk the same more or less. thats why jerp has started new build from scratch but that is a few days away yet so your choice in waiting........... the ion r4 and european roms are good to go and offer a bit more than standard voda rom.!
you choose..........thats my opinion!
I have the same phone as you.
I would not recommend this one "[Update 6-07]HTC Hero ROM for Magic by Fatal1ty"
It is very slow on our UK Vodafone magic's
Hero ROMs are slow because the original Hero rom was built for the HTC hero with 288mb RAM instead of your Vodafone Magic's 192mb.
SP france europe rom seems the best choise..
Got a UK Vodaphone model , Ion r4 works best.

i have a uk vodafone and 1.4 is NOT very slow on mine. it is slower than the standard rom, slower than ION r4 and slower than the european one
however
it is fine for me. it has a lot of very cool features - multi-touch, facebook, twitter and flikr integration with contacts and of course it looks fantastic.
having been on 1.4 from fatal1ty and currently on the ION rom i can say that i am moving back to 1.4 as it is so much cooler. i am going to get a class 6 sd card and see if this improves speed
Paul
The class 6 wont make a huge difference - I tried. However, depends on how willing you are to put up with lag.
Personally I'd recommend the Ion R4, OR get hold of the original ION rom (I got it from Android Bloggin Network - I'll post link later) and a Root for it, then I have a blazing fast ION stock rom, with Root, so you can customise as needed.
100% stable, and Damn fast.
I tried all the hero roms, but however good it looks is a bit cruddy when you hit 10+lag between apps etc.
My phone is usable, and does everything I need until Donut, which will bring many of the social network functions in a google supported form(google still target the G1 internally, so wont hit the ram restriction like the hero rom)

I think they were demonstrated at the google dev conference so assume they'll be there
Many thanks for the above, everyone.
To the Ion R4 advocates - do you mean from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523971
Also, is there a newb-proof guide to updating ROMS (I believe it needs to be rooted first?) and, perhaps more importantly, restoring your original ROM (ie. if you don't like the results)? Again, have punted around the forums and found a few guides but most of them seem to refer to other guides that I can't track down (i.e. they say something like "follow ABC's guide up to the reboot, then do XYZ", but have no idea where to find ABC or his/her guide).
nk02 Ion R4 or the SPF European ROM
PAUL
any chance of you tubing a vid of your fatality 1.4 in action mate i think alot of users are holding off rooting and hero build rom updating because so many complain of lag issues and freezing might be nice to see the speed in action

cool look foward to that if youve got time bud
I think Loccy has raised an interesting topic here. I am also a Vodafone UK HTC Magic user, willing to try some new ROMs with Hero's features, however what I really miss here is some sticky thread with complete step-by-step instructions of where and how to start with ROM flashing. I've been a heavy user of Windows Mobile devices some time ago, and also been playing with xda-dev any many different ROMs. But as far as I remember for each device-specific forum there was at least 2 or 3 sticky threads with complete n00b instructions. In this case it's a bit scattered all over the place and takes time to figure it all out and glue the pieces...
If I have time later I will try to create a guide - The information is there but absolutly agree it's hard to work out whats latest / correct info.
If not today then over next couple of days.
Hi newb alert here! Just to add a little to eva_d's point above (which would be great), as a newb n00b I'd find it really useful to know what the differences betwenn the different ROMs is.
I'm 99% I'm going to get a Magic on VF UK next month. The phone looks good and I like the idea of the open source OS so you can fiddle with what you get which is why I am here. I understand the OS on the VF UK magics is relatively lame. However, I am having trouble understanding what's the difference between fatal1ty's, nk02's and the smartphone euro one? I mean in terms of functionality. What difference does user see? Is it jthe UI? Functionality? Both? Are there any screenshots?
fatal1tys = nice but slow
nk02's = nice, fast, but what's the difference between the full and "lite" as a user? Compared to the stock ROM?
Euro = nice fast, but again, I'm not sure what I would be getting compared to what comes in the box? (btw French isn't a problem for me).
All the hero roms - currently having issues, good to play with but maybe not for everyday (unless jerpelas new rom out later is as good as hinted at...) Has multitouch browser and better music app
NK02 - good, based on the very fast Google ION rom - with a few extras
SFR - Good fast rom, french based but quick and stable
I use the stock ION rom, rooted with a few customisations. I managed to get the HERO camera working last night, working on the browser today, might have something to release (but I will need some help) later this week, depending on what the others release...
Fatal1ty - are you still there?
Jeperla - Looking forwards to version 005
If i was getting a new phone i would not get the VF one - i would go to orange and T mobile and look at what they are offering. The HTC hero looks very nice and it natively runs Rosie so why not just get that if that what you are after
remember the VF magic has even less RAM than the Magic provided by t-mobile - not too sure if that version is coming to uk
Paul
Note Rosie was not meant for a RAM shy device like the VF magic so it is going to struggle no matter what. it is a toss up between looks/functionality/speed so choose what is most important to you.
Looks = fatal1tys Rom
Speed = Ion
functionality varies depending on what you want - for me fatal1tys works so thats what i use

Additional n00b questions:
1) Do custom ROMs for Magic have full access to Android Market or installing apps would have to be manual after flashing new ROM?
2) How to revert original ROM? Is my understanding right that nandroid is a right tool for the job, ie. it dumps current ROM onto SD card and then allows to restore it? (just trying to glue the scattered pieces together
3) How does web browser work in various custom ROMs? I use my Magic mainly as an internet tablet for mobile browsing on the Tube or wherever, I very rarely use it for phone calls - would it be OK then to use custom ROM with some Hero features?
i have a tmobile my touch 3g rooted running qtek's hero but its extreemly slow tried the fat2 to fat3 and its still slow can you post up the fastest best hero rom for the mt3g its a 32b board or is there anything better than hero that is not cupcake thanks
Next time, post in the generals section and if you can't find any fast ones here you should probably try the ones in the Dream forum, there are a few hero roms compatible with the MT3G
there is no such thing as fat2 or fat3. Qtek's IS ONE OF THE FASTEST Hero ROM's out there. Did you do your research before you posted this in the wrong forum? You need three partitions. FAT32, EXT3, AND LINUX SWAP. All Hero ROM's will run slower than stock ROM's like Cyanogen, but som are about as fast as stock before root. On top of that, this question has been asked a million times. Please use the search button next time.
Try them all and see for yourself. I personally like Eugene373 sense, or sensehero from Manup, CC, and Mike Taylor. Both roms are very fast , reliable, and themed nice.
I just copy and paste my anwser now because this question is asked a few times a day
as my title says this question is asked a few times a day.... search is cool
take a look at the threads that start with [ROM] I'm willing to bet somewhere in each of those threads you'll find more than one post saying "This is the [best/fastest/most stable] rom out" and if you look at who said it they most likely said it on a few other roms too thats because each person uses their phone differently and each rom can either be good or not for that specific person.
then theres also the style if your a fan of hero then hero roms are gonna be the best, you also have the live/die for Cyanoden people... can you guess what they consider to be the best rom??? and now theirs tattoo, blur and pulse style roms coming out so that just adds to the pile.
The only thing you can really do is flash until your happy, which its a good thing that it takes 30sec to flash a new rom, to tell you the truth i flashed a good 20 roms before I stuck with the one I use now and I bet someone would disagree that its the best rom but from all the ones ive used for what i do on my phone its the best for me
so instead of asking people that most likely use their phone for completely opposite things you do, I suggest you just flash a few and figure out whats best for what you use if its not better then the last one you flashed then restore [thats what the backups for ] and so on...
Qtek 1.8 is the best to my mind.
Hello All!
Like many others I am getting a bit pissed off with the time it is taking HTC to release the 2.1 update for the Hero/G2. (Now June???)
While waiting I have notice a number of hacked or custom ROMs and have been watching with great interest. It would seem the best way to keep your Tech up to date is to use the community ROMs.
I’m in the process of getting a Goldcard and downgrading……
So, the question now is:
Which Hero/G2 custom ROM do you use and why?
I would like AndNav2 or Google Maps Navigator to work.
Your thoughts please
Ta Eddie
I rooted this weekend for the same reason. I use the Fresh 2.0d ROM. I like it because it is based on the leaked Sprint 2.1 ROM, but all the bloatware is stripped out to make it run a lot faster. I also chose it because it is fairly active and there are a lot of little modular updates you can do to change some of the stuff like the vanilla lock screen fix and the OpenGL ES problem that makes live wallpapers not work.
i too am thinking about using a new rom due to the extreme amount of time in between updates. When spring releases the official 2.1, will it be easy to switch back, or will i really not even feel the need to do that?
IMO I think you will be happier with the ROMs than the official Sprint release. You have more control over the phone with a faster ROM, not to mention WiFi tether. I regret bit making the move earlier.
tried villain5.2 and 5.4. both are better than the stock, by better I mean faster. but am in love with slide villain. so smooth. the best ever.

Hey... I'm a little confused regarding which ROM to pick for my 32A magic.
I really like the new officialli feautures (Sense and look--- Home screen, weather animations etc etc) on the HTC legend and Desire.
That's why i wan't to pick a rom which look like the "feel" of Legend / desire.
But what roms is like that?
What's important is:
- Stable
- Fast
What can you recommend? Unfortunately there are very little screens of the different version / comparisons... Thats why i'm asking here
Recommend: Read this before starting a thread, Most Question Asked are Answered
Q- Which ROM is best for me/ Which ROM is the best for 32A/B?
A- Take some time on the forums, look at the ROMs available for your device and individually assess what works for you by reading the various issues affecting them and make a decision. If that still doesn't work out for you, hey, that's what makes XDA great, try a different one and so on, till you find one that YOU'RE happy with. It's very subjective since what my needs are could be totally different from what yours are.
Yes but instead of testing all the roms... Then i know that many doesn't meet my requirements..
"I really like the new officially feautures (Sense and look--- Home screen, weather animations etc etc) on the HTC legend and Desire." Therefore i will like a rom based on that..
And without to many screens on the site :/ it could be very easy for someone just to recommend me a couple based on that..
You can start your search here, it even includes some ratings for stability/speed etc. Just make sure it's the correct type (32A/32B) and that your radio version is correct for that rom.
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668090
(replace "hxxp" with "http")
I'd recommend Senpei's Legend rom. It's 2.1 with all the Sense UI goodness without too many crazy mods to unbalance it. It's for 32A w/ 6.35 radio.
For SenseUI on 32A magic, I suggest CursorSense. It's cupcake, but everything works, it's fast and perfectly stable. I still find alot of the eclair sense ROMs for new radio are still a bit unstable and some things like camera and BT may or may not work.
The problem about a topic like this is that we get one every week or so. And since it doesn't have anything to do with development of phone OS related stuff it would probably fit better in another category
Anyway
32A Cupcake with HTC sense go for CursorSense.
32A Eclair with HTC sense go for Senpei's Legend or CapySlide.
Alan090 had a decent port of the my touch slide rom here recently. Old radio.
Only thing not working decently appeared to be bluetooth. But this is a sense issue affecting android 2.1 ports to magics apparently.
I Think you would find that this rom had alot of what you want.
Personally im hoping he keeps updating it with the new cm kernel ports and the pershoot improvements. I Would like to move to it soon as my second rom.
Otherwise I agree with ronni.
The only problem I had with any new radio sense port was the fact that usb tether doesn't work properly for me.

I have tried really many different roms.
Currently i am stuck with "CyanogenMod 5.0.7t3 - Fastest Eclair 2.1(05/11/2010) OC/UV (576Mhz)" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394) which really is very fast and stable.

just cus u asked so nicely I will grant your request and add pershoots kernel
was waiting for an update to the rom from chiefz but he seems to have been on cyanogenmod 5 or something I know thats what I am using
also this is either suited for the general section - or like above - try out a bunch
see what works for you
Thank you very much... I will look into the different Roms listed here...
But one major thingh missing.. Is screenshots of the rom's. Ex just a screendump of the homescreen and menu screen could be VERY usefull...
I need some advice on what rom i should install in my g Tab, I allready installed cyanogenmod but i have been reading so much on the others that i don't think i made the best choice, So what would be the best one to use??? i really want to get my tab running right!!!! Please Help!!!
Why not to try them all and then let us know what you like ?
Cause im not the greatest at doing these things and i would rather do it once rather then take a chance and screwing things up. This is my first android device and im not familiar with it at all!

Then read, read and read some more. If you can do it once then you can do it again. I like them all.
ehunyadi has a great Youtube channel with some different ROMs if you want to watch instead of read.
Install and learn how to use clockworkmod (the older .08 bekit one, there's a link in my TnT Lite post). This will allow you to make nandroid backups and easily flip between mods. The newer clockworkmod versions might have issues with the mods, so I still recommend the older one.
Each mod has its pros and cons.
TnT with the enhancement packs seem to be the most stable and the most current. Be prepared to try others when they come along, especially CM7. I try to stay with ROMs that have ongoing development and support and I hope things get going soon with 2.2.1 and 2.3.
im pretty excited about Vegan updates at this point. its the most "android" looking (ASOP ive heard it called) and runs very similarly to my Droid X which is really nice
I have tried all of the ROMs available. So far Zpad, and Vegan are my favorites. I am sticking with Vegan. I have learned a lot about this tablet and I am very happy with my current setup. Once you figure out how to load them its easier to try new ones.
Instructions flashing roms
Where are the instructions for flashing these roms.. thanks all............
