Magic IO chips/traces/pads for keyboard, laying in wait? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hey all,
Does anyone have a dead HTC Magic out there?
I think HTC designed the Magic, with the intention of using the same boards for a Dream V2. That is, I think that the traces are already on the Magic, and that the IO pads are already there, waiting to be utilized by the Dream's keyboard.
Can anyone open their Magic, to see? Perhaps someone with a dead Magic?
Also, if anyone knows of some very high res pics, of all the boards in the Magic, that might work too..

Even if that was correct, and that the magic had ports which are to be used by a physical keyboard, what would you use them for?
You cant just strap on a keyboard and tape it in place

Sure you could.. why not?
Regardless, I was thinking of something more refined.
Still, that's step 2. Let's concentrate on step 1...
You have a dead Magic you can open? Do you know of any pics?

Even if i had one i wouldnt be so adventurous to open it
Anyway, if you believe that you can make it work with a physical keyboard im really looking forward to the development of this thread
I'll try to find some pictures and help you out that way...

I appreciate it, but unless you have a private stash (or know of one), it might be hard. I Googled around a bit, looking for high res pics of the Magic circuit boards, but didn't find anything.
I did find a website, for $2000, that will sell you an entire disassembly process of the Magic, plus a listing of all components, with high res-pics, etc.
A little out of my price range though.

Naw, the pictures are too small. We need _high_ res pics, because we'll be looking for small pads, plus we'll need to see where the traces go, and what chip the traces connect to... and the writing on the chip, to know what it is!
We'll need some good, high res pics of someone disassembling the beast, that didn't reduce them down for a PDF or some such...
I'm hoping someone has already looked inside the dream, just to examine it when they first got it, but I haven't found any good pics from that..

I've found it...http://phandroid.com/htc-magic-manual.pdf
But as you said the damn pictures are too blurry...
The good news is that there surely is someone around with a bricked magic...

yes very informative changing radio for hero is problay easy then thought just swap the board with tmobile 3g radio and your set oh yeah code to probaly

Dream drone!

It's all done through vnc right now so the latency is bad, but that's easy to fix by using a dedicated app.... window 0 is video, window 1 is the debug output from vnc, window 2 is the output from the daughterboard and also where you send commands to steer with. Using channel 1 and 2 for steering, channel 3 for tilting the camera (well, tilting the mirror) so you have 5 free for a manipulator or whatever. Also 6 slots for sensors.
I'd like to point out that unlike a Predator drone, the video and data feeds have proper encryption
Sorry for the bad quality of the external pictures: I use the G1 as my main camera and had to dig out an old webcam.
Code and schematics for the daughterboard available on request, if you want a built-up daughterboard I gotta charge you for it, though.

FUNNY!!! great work, would like to see a vid of this assassin in action
Thats fantastic!
Hey brutal^ he developed some kind of WMD thats capable of missile mirages or inceptions.
Can it fly though?
The problem is that if you want a "first person" video I can take it, if you want to see it go not so much because I have no other video camera than the phone!

It doesn't matter anyways, you can't move it. Just wait for a mod to do it
Let me get this straight. You have created a vehicle which is controlled by a G1 which itself can be controlled remotely? is this done by Wifi or 3G? Please post more details, it looks like a fun thing to do once I retire my G1, especially if I could control it from another Android phone.
Yes, the G1 is connected to a daughterboard that uses the serial port on the ExtUSB plug to talk to a microcontroller, which in turn can deal with servos and sensors. The G1 can be controlled with ssh (I prefer to work in linux shell land) and sends images back via VNC. This can be done through any sort of network connection, I tested it with 3G and it works, now using wifi because I don't have to pay Vodafone for airtime that way. Next step is to get better video feedback and port the universal autopilot I wrote for the Parallax Propeller onto the g1.
I'm sorry but I really had to.
That'd be the next thing, once this works well on land I'll put it on a motorglider. well back to work sorry for posting in the wrong forum!

No... android development is when you develop Android, not hack the hardware. This isn't any new ideas or improvements, it's just an interesting use for what we already have.
Don't get me wrong, I think what you've done is extremely impressive (weird, funny, and makes me say "Why???!?!," but impressive). Kudos to you for your work. It's definitely not Android development, but it's a simple mistake, which is why everyone on this forum isn't bashing you mercilessly for it like we do when someone posts a thread here saying, "Plz help tried to instal dis moto clik thing n now all i see is Tmobil G1." A mod will move it soon, so don't sweat it.
But seriously, dude.... WTF?!? inspired you to do this?
I make my money building ship autopilots and wanted to do something that you can buy with less than $100 if you already have a g1. Also, I think those rc-car-with-camera toys are spiffy but have very limited range, so let's do something about that
re developing Android, I think this will turn into a "you see what my camera sees and viceversa" application, which I am sure has been done already, but I need to make it work through ssh.
I dont care if its develepment or not (nor the whys) I think if you have the knowledge to build something like this, then why the hell not its fun.
And its about the coolest thing I have seen in a while

htc dream keyboard with HTC magic?

Hmm.
I've opened my HTC Dream, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a Magic..
The ram on some Magics is 288M, yes? And 192M on the Dream? This is a *huge* difference, as it takes what... 70M or so, just to load the OS, the home screen, an applet or two, and of course the 20M for the graphics chip...
So, that's a big upgrade.
Thing is, I've heard many a time, that the Magic is basically just a Dream. If so, wouldn't HTC have provided pinouts for hooking up a hardware keyboard? After all, there might have been plans to make a Dream V2.
Has anyone looked at the hardware inside, to see if it is possible to take the Magic circuit board, and slap it into a Dream? To see if the pinouts are on the board?
I'd *happily* buy a Magic, swap the hardware, and use the old Dream board + Magic case for a backup phone...
So, anyone looked?

An intent to help would be:

A smartass "go search google for service manuals, that have nothing to do with the question.. and can't help at all" isn't an attempt to help.

So, since you did not state this before, I believe I am correct in my prior assumption that you were simply being a smartass. That is, you read my prior thread, saw the other comments that stated what you've just stated, and decided to carry the same marlarky here.
Clearly I've already stated, especially in that other thread, that I am looking for that pad/header first.
So, how are you helping? Comparatively, how are you being destructive?
Does it harm you, or others of this board, to allow myself -- and others that would like to see the same, to get together and look for a keyboard header/pads on the Magic? Certainly not!
For example, as for the camera, it's only a hole in the back of the case. A dremel will make a nice, neat one. As for the rest of the boards? Well, that's something to see. Clearly I've heard statements about the boards... repeating them is not necessary.
Heck, I haven't even stated that I'd have to use the case from the Dream OR Magic to make this work, have I? There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Of course, even though you apparently don't want to look for the pads, or investigate the hardware directly, the fact that I'm interesting in trying seems to erk you. It also seems to erk goldenarmz for some reason. Your thoughts of "Why is he even bothering with this?!" translate into "I should post as many detracting statements as possibile in these threads, to prevent it!"
After all, if you don't want to do it, and if you don't think it's possible... why, you must come to my thread, and do everything possible to prevent others from trying!
So, please.. go ahead goldenarmz and Firerat. Continue to post "you can't do that!" messages all over my threads. That's just great! I'm sure everyone will be very thankful, that you've both done everything you can to prevent my horrible abomination!

Riiiight.
Regardless of whether or not you knew of the other thread, your "go look at the manuals via how-to-search-Google smartass page" was clearly not meant to be polite, by any means. It was meant to be a smartassed statement... and you received an answer in the same vein.
Also, your definition of an "idiot", is actually a misquote, I believe it was initially a _joke_ about sanity. Of course, such a statement in itself is "idiotic", unless you think learning by trial and error is only an idiots game.
Or, did you consider yourself an idiot, when you were learning to ride a bike... fell off, and got back on? Ha-ha, look at the idiot, trying to ride a bike again -- but expecting to stay on!
Please. Again, let's be serious.

You've asked the same question 3 times despite being told, and being shown proof that it will never, ever work.
By insisting that you want to find these "pads" where a keyboard was never intended to be fitted.. You're trying to climb the garden fence when directly behind it is a 50 foot wall of impenetrable steel - namely, the fact that your creation won't fit in the sodding case.

I would love a JTAG adapter but currently none is available in the whole world for this phone. Member AdamOutler has been slowly fabbing one up for other purposes that may benefit me in the JTAG quest. But there is also a chance my skill will develop first and allow me to directly solder to the pads which I have managed to already do once and I'm hoping for some repeats on the boards I have currently in transit to me! If all goes well, I can go live with this service middle of next week.

If you have a hard bricked captivate that is no longer in warranty and is currently of no use to you, I'd like to practice with the motherboard and attempt to JTAG repair it. I'm practicing my skill at the tiny points on a Captivate board in an attempt to be able to offer JTAG Captivate debricking which is practically offered by only a few places in the world.
This is a REQUEST for any/all Captivate's that are not water damaged, and were hard bricked by a bad ODIN flash, firmware OTA upgrade or bootloader upgrade. If your phone has the black screen of death and won't turn on, this is for you. If it shows ZERO signs of life, this is for you.
MODS: This is not an advertisement for a service but a free offer of helping out both myself and the owner of the phone. There is NO PROFIT made on this. I will even cover your S/H fees to and from my home.
This process currently has a moderate chance (50/50) of damaging the boards points for JTAG owner's, this is only for people that don't currently have a warranty in effect and have nothing to lose versus throwing way a board I may be able to fix. If you have a warranty you are advised to go through Samsung or AT&T for a replacement not through me on this potential trial fix.
If I fix your phone, it's absolutely free for participating in my practice session with Captivate JTAG soldering. I have successfully mastered other Galaxy S variants (Epic, Vibrant and i9000) but the Captivate is by far the hardest phone to solder to.
I'm looking for 3 phones. Don't miss out on a chance to possibly have your paper weight restored at no cost!!!

does anyone know if it is sealed or glued, etc.?
I tried this with my dell streak 7 tablet, and the seal wasnt heated enough to loosen up, and some of the outside cracked.
needless to say I wont be opening my tab plus regardless.
but thanks for the info.

I wonder if that tool could help us get ICS any more quickly. Are there any unstable members good at making convincing threats?

"unstable." That's an interesting choice of word. I'd say that when I try to dance, I'm pretty unstable. I'm also unstable when trying to balance on a tightwire. Does that count?
Hehe. I left out the mentally-part. I thought that was obvious. Just joking around... trying to imagine ways that tool could be put to use.

Oh! Why didn't you say so? Obviously, most people on these forums are mentally parted! As well, we often part with our mentality.
Am I missing something mental here? Perhaps only part-way?
Well, in any case, I hope you didn't take my comment personally. I certainly didn't mean for it to come across that way. When I saw that image you linked, I giggled and immediately pictured a frustrated XDA member heading to Samsung with ICS-demands on their mind and a hammer in their hand.
Have a nice day, Gary.
