Dream drone! - G1 Android Development

It's all done through vnc right now so the latency is bad, but that's easy to fix by using a dedicated app.... window 0 is video, window 1 is the debug output from vnc, window 2 is the output from the daughterboard and also where you send commands to steer with. Using channel 1 and 2 for steering, channel 3 for tilting the camera (well, tilting the mirror) so you have 5 free for a manipulator or whatever. Also 6 slots for sensors.
I'd like to point out that unlike a Predator drone, the video and data feeds have proper encryption
Sorry for the bad quality of the external pictures: I use the G1 as my main camera and had to dig out an old webcam.
Code and schematics for the daughterboard available on request, if you want a built-up daughterboard I gotta charge you for it, though.

FUNNY!!! great work, would like to see a vid of this assassin in action

Thats fantastic!

Hey brutal^ he developed some kind of WMD thats capable of missile mirages or inceptions.
Can it fly though?

The problem is that if you want a "first person" video I can take it, if you want to see it go not so much because I have no other video camera than the phone!

sorry, thought it was cool
where should this thread be moved to?

It doesn't matter anyways, you can't move it. Just wait for a mod to do it

Let me get this straight. You have created a vehicle which is controlled by a G1 which itself can be controlled remotely? is this done by Wifi or 3G? Please post more details, it looks like a fun thing to do once I retire my G1, especially if I could control it from another Android phone.

Yes, the G1 is connected to a daughterboard that uses the serial port on the ExtUSB plug to talk to a microcontroller, which in turn can deal with servos and sensors. The G1 can be controlled with ssh (I prefer to work in linux shell land) and sends images back via VNC. This can be done through any sort of network connection, I tested it with 3G and it works, now using wifi because I don't have to pay Vodafone for airtime that way. Next step is to get better video feedback and port the universal autopilot I wrote for the Parallax Propeller onto the g1.

I'm sorry but I really had to.

That'd be the next thing, once this works well on land I'll put it on a motorglider. well back to work sorry for posting in the wrong forum!

No... android development is when you develop Android, not hack the hardware. This isn't any new ideas or improvements, it's just an interesting use for what we already have.
Don't get me wrong, I think what you've done is extremely impressive (weird, funny, and makes me say "Why???!?!," but impressive). Kudos to you for your work. It's definitely not Android development, but it's a simple mistake, which is why everyone on this forum isn't bashing you mercilessly for it like we do when someone posts a thread here saying, "Plz help tried to instal dis moto clik thing n now all i see is Tmobil G1." A mod will move it soon, so don't sweat it.
But seriously, dude.... WTF?!? inspired you to do this?

I make my money building ship autopilots and wanted to do something that you can buy with less than $100 if you already have a g1. Also, I think those rc-car-with-camera toys are spiffy but have very limited range, so let's do something about that
re developing Android, I think this will turn into a "you see what my camera sees and viceversa" application, which I am sure has been done already, but I need to make it work through ssh.

I dont care if its develepment or not (nor the whys) I think if you have the knowledge to build something like this, then why the hell not its fun.
And its about the coolest thing I have seen in a while

sidekick interface Question

dont kill me for asking.. but i have been seeing a lot of roms with manila screen on it(i think thats what you call it). while that is very cool and fast to use, i cant help but wonder about i someone would be able to copy the sidekick interface. i'm not just talking about an app to make it look like it but an actual rom. i think it be really cool since we have the side scroll bar also. i dont know how to make roms. hope a dev will be reading this and take it in consideration
Let me ask you this....
can you run ps3 games on a Xbox? No....incompatible software and hardware.
i think i shall start new thread in the kaiser rom development forum on "How to sync Kaiser with PS3"
i believe you can connect tilt to ps3 and share media lol. i bet we could be using our kaisers as ps3 controllers within a week

very funny.. lets do it this way, we got the android working on kaiser, immitated the storm, made it look like the iphone without the hardware question being the problem. its not a stupid question its just who will write the coding. android has been working(though unstable) rerouting the buttons also. and im not asking if the sidekick os can be dumped and rebuild, its a matter of is there someone out there smart enough to write it from nothing. seen a lot of crazy things been done to our phone. this would be a brand new step.

Your thought is innovative but if u see the hardware will not be able to support the side kick side pane and a lot of process is involved in makin the android run on the kaiser to name a few we need to port , make the boot runner compatiable with it ..
So bear with it...

SIM Cardless Optimization

I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

NDS Emulator...Possible?

Before I get flamed, I just want to say that I couldn't find a thread after a search. "DS" is pretty short for a search
Looking at the DS's specifications (understand that we'd only need to look at the specs of the ORIGINAL DS; they can play any game that the others can), it seems very doable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS#Technical_specifications
Here's the NDS emulation link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_emulation
An open-source NDS emulator written in C++ for Windows: http://dualis.1emu.net/files/index.html
It's been done for Windows, the specs appear to be doable, so I was just wondering...what's stopping us?!
it may be just me... lol..........
but i'm pretty sure the ds utilizes 2 screens.................................
my hd2 only has 1..... maybe mine's defective??
How is it done on the PC? It's split down the middle. The touch (or on PC, mouse) is only active on the bottom. Next time try thinking before making a wise comment
i know. what a jerk. ignorant people make ignorant comments
I imagine it would be if someone put in the time. Haven't seen alot of interest though
Hi
I had a look at the wiki page you pointed to and I think the Emulation link may be more helpful, I can't check any of those out as I'm at work and the fun police have blocked them :/
Wiki emulation link is;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_emulation
Maybe there are some developers on those sites which are interested in working on a version for winmo, similar to FPSECE the PS1 emulator for winmo devices.
Again, just putting some helpful information out there: http://www.ndsemulator.com/nds-emulator.htm
Also note that we wouldn't need the ARM 7 processor because it's used solely for GBA emulation on the DS (or am I incorrect?). Here is what I can find as the "best" emulator for PC: http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/gba/nocashgba.html
I'd love to have this functional on my HD2. Not only does it take advantage of the touch screen, but the iffy multitouch support wouldn't even be necessary - the DS doesn't support it itself!
@lexx-luthor
Thanks for the link, hope you don't mind if I throw it in the first post.

lol funny... try thinking before you post kid...
comparing a fully running pc.. and its MONITOR... i'd be shocked if it didn't run ds games.... are you still a little confused here??
and before i totally crush your little dreams of playing a nintendo ds on your hd2... it's just plain and simply not possible.. the end...
think about the buttons.. .. lets say we did split the hd 2 screen in half.... so a portion of it would be the touch screen... where would the "nintendo ds hardware buttons be??
think morph gear.. think playstation emulator.....
there would have to be a gamepad.. on the lower half of the screen.... which would probably get in the way of what was supposed to be the "touch" part of the ds.....
so yea.. forgive my tone.. if they are insulting to you.. but common sense is something i take a little seriously..... especially if someone is gonna try and "correct" someone....
dismissed
Does it really take a fully-fuctional PC to emulate a 67 MHz processor and 32 MB of RAM? Is the HD2's 1 GHz processor and 448 MB RAM not enough, even if the game does peak and use all of the 67 MHz and 32 MB? Why would a monitor make a difference at all? If the screen is split, the top part would act as a monitor. So, again, if you're going to be an ass then think about what you're going to say first.
It would be possible the same way that FPSECE is - with a Bluetooth controller such as the BGP100: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_667zwB3nLE
I feel like I'm "correcting" you quite well actually. So, again, thanks for trying. Anything else?
Lol!
Should re name this the *****in thread!
No, no one has released anything that will play NDS games.. yet...
I agree, It wouldn't be very functional with the lay out along with the additional buttons needed. Your right, you could add the controller however wouldn't be a very practical emulator if you HAD to have one, would it?
So bottom line, I very much doubt you'll see one, not for a while anyway.
No need to hate on people for giving their opinion, and personally I like people with a sense of humor!

Why couldn't you just answer in a manner such as that?
I do agree that it would be less than optimal to require a controller, but FPSECE requires one as well and there are many people that use it as far as I know. I understand why you say that we may not see one for a while, but I'd rather keep dreaming

All these ..... are getting me confused!!
I agree with snowblind, its probably very possible just a little impractical. Personally I can't really see the point in gaming on a mobile phone with a controller. If I want to do that I'll just go on my 360 or PS3.
I heard the next iteration of the DS will have phone capabilities built in. You heard it here first!

i somehow doubt that as well... not saying that it couldn't happen... but like the OP's idea... it is just simply not gonna work...
nintendo would have to start a whole new service... for their phone services... despite the financial aspect of it... starting a phone company isn't as easy as 1,2,3....
but ehh.. people can dream.... i'm not gonna argue about that... just stick to the classics yea OP?? morphGear is fantastic... and playing true classics like that on my mobile phone is a dream come true... the ds is already a "mobile" device... its a handheld gaming unit... therefore making it on the phone would more so be a way to "show off" the phones capabilities... (which are gonna become obsolete in about a year... but thats a different topic..) rather then a practical use... morphgear or playstation emulators are perfect because i simply cannot take my super nintendo everywhere... nor my PSOne.... are ya getting it now??

Epic 4G video/audio out to RCA or USB for NAV in car? 2008 or 2009 G35/G37

Can someone please post a link for where I can buy a cable that will allow me run run video/audio out from my Epic 4G to my current 08 G35 TV screen via RCA?
When my lease runs out on the G35, the new G37 replaces the RCA video/audio in with USB. Can someone post a like for where I can buy a cable for sending video/audio from my Epic to the USB in of the G37?
Thank you.
Did you try the search button or the wiki? Or did you expect someone else to do that work for you? While we're on the subject, if you have the money to piss away on a G37, you have money to pay someone who knows what they're doing to set it up for you.
HAD you done any reading (rather than expecting us nerds to work for you for free) you'd see video is not happening (at least not yet, and possibly never). Audio is certainly possible, and VERY EASY, but if you can't figure that out you have no business trying to get wired into a car stereo (much less in a LEASED car).

Short answer: no.
Has anyone tried microUSB to TV/Monitor USB port for video and audio?

The fact that the Epic won't do AV out for dual display is still pathetic.

I can see some home entertainment systems getting built with this thing..
I am wondering how long it will be before we move away from windows all together, as with the support from the hardware manufactures it is really as they say becoming "A train full of steam"
