Got a question...
I have recently been upgraded to Google Voice, and was wondering if there was a way I could basically "spoof" all outgoing caller IDs so it appeared as my Google Voice number. The reason for doing this is if I switch to Google Voice, my calls will still show as coming from my old number.
If this isnt possible, anyone have any other ways around this?
EDIT: I should note... I do have a PPC6800/HTC MOGUL, so I have access to all the EPST settings and whatnot.
bump please....
You can but you have to call your google voice number to initiate the outgoing call instead of dialing out directly.
I am running the "gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final" ROM.
Was able to sign up for Google Voice, setup phones for a landline number and Google chat.
From my desktop PC, I am able to login to Google Voice and use it to make and receive calls.
But when I try to setup Google Voice on the G Tab, it seems to get stuck on the "Set up voicemail" screen
"We have a problem"
"Your voicemail settings could not be loaded. Please try again."
If I hit "OK" then "Next", it goes back to "We have a problem".
If I hit "Skip" then it is stuck in this "Set up voicemail" screen with the "Back" and "Next" buttons grayed out.
I have read several posts similar to this problem.
What I don't understand is why does it think that this G Tab is a phone?
What should I do?
I am having the same issue. Google Voice had been working before but I recently had to wipe user data and now when I go through the setup it gets stuck exactly as you described. Has anyone found a solution. btw I am running tnt lite 4.2.5
Hope this helps or Hope I'm right

I could be completely wrong, but I had the same problem, my conclusion is that google voice is trying to identify your number through voicemail BUT...it can't because there's no sim card. I don't know I might be wrong. Hopefully someone else can come in and correct me or confirm the info. Good luck.
I downloaded the googlevoice apk file from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959310
Installed this apk file.
Rebooted the G Tab.
Started over the Google Voice settings.
This time I moved beyond the "Set up voicemail" screen.
Finished the Google Voice setup completely.
When I try to use Google Voice using my Landline as the forwarded phone, it works.
But when using Google chat as the forwarded phone:
When I try to use Google Voice to make an outbound call, Google Voice says that it is calling me but I do not see any inbound calls on the G Tab.
When I call my Google Voice number from any landline phone, on the landline phone I can hear the ringing but I do not see any inbound calls on the G Tab.
What am I missing?
I just want to make and receive calls in Google Voice from the G Tab.
Trust me,
Google voice still works for text and calls. Once you sign in just hi the home button. You can then select a contact to text or call. It infuriated me to no end untilled I figured this out. Now I call my best friend in Hawaii for free.

I was messing with Google Voice just last night. I found a post that suggested getting to the voicemail page and then just backing all the way out of GV again. I did that then went to test by sending my very first SMS from my gtab (i think I went to the 'phone' app then found the contact I wanted then long pressed or something then saw a little message button, clicked it and it took me to a place to type a text... and based on the tiny icon on the top I believe I was actually in Google Voice). Oh and the sms went through. As far as calling goes I didn't test it but I'm pretty confident that if I just go to the phone app and dial a number it will work. If I had my gtab with me I'd put my money where my mouth it right now.
I'll check on this thread when I get home later and let you know if I have better details or new info.
Good luck!
I had the same problem but resolved it by downloading the latest Google Voice from the market. Went through the setup again and when it failed the first time I found the "Skip" button had been moved and worked flawlessly.
According to Google Voice -> Settings -> About ->
I am running Build number 0.4.2.13
Is this the latest?

That's the build I have and is the current build in the market (as far as I can see...).
It is not just the Google Voice app on the G Tab.
When I open the web browser.
I log in to the Google Voice web page
https://www.google.com/voice
I click the Call button.
In the Number to call field, I enter a friend's landline number.
In the Phone to call with, I select Google Talk.
When I hit connect, it says "calling you ..."
But there is no ringing on the G Tab?
So what exactly is it calling?
I powered off the G Tab.
Use the same Google id on my desktop to access the Google Voice web page.
Made the same outbound call, it works.

I have been searching the market for "Google Voice" but I don't see any such app in the market.
Is "Google Voice" the correct term to search for?

Yes, that is correct. If it isn't there then you probably need to perform one or more of the market fix procedures first.

Last I heard, Google Talk for Android did not yet support voice/video calls. You should still be able to have it set up a call to your landline or cell.
Ok, I got the Market fix done.
I don't quite understand the difference between ...

I had the similar problem. I finished the install the file you provided. Voice mail set up was done. But, when I go back to the home screen, click on the phone button on the right side of the screen (one of the three button) and dialed a number. It says call setup failed. I am not sure why that happened. Does anyone know? I just want to be able to make calls, no need to receive calls. Thanks

Google Talk for Android (the app on the G Tablet) is not the same as the Windows app or the browser plugin for desktop machines. It doesn't support voice or video calls so when you select it to be used from Google Voice it won't work. To make and/or receive calls from GV on your tablet you must use a VOIP product and set it up in GV as you would any other phone. There are threads on this forum that discuss how to do that.
You can still initiate calls from your mobile or landline by setting them up in GV then selecting the appropriate one in the "phone to call with" menu from the web page.
Interestingly... you can also log into Google Talk (or gmail with the GT plugin) from your desktop and use your G Tablet to initiate a call using that instance of Google Talk.
Ahhhhhh! Someone please help me. My Google voice isn't acting right. I've used Google voice a lot for my voicemail only. That's what I always did, I never ran into issues. Now all my text messages, incoming calls are coming through Google voice. I don't understand. I just want to use it for my voice mail. Like usual. I even went on the Google voice settings web page. I can't figure out how to disable my text messages from coming through gvoice. Can anyone help me? Thanks
I could only see this happening if people were calling and texting your Google Voice number (you can find this in GV settings on your phone) instead of your actual phone number (the one given to you by your carrier). Google voice, I believe, is unable to intercept text messages not routed to your GV number.

they were calling and texting my google voice number. Aren't you supposed to set your google voice number to your actual phone number?
Hi All,
I installed google voice and I am want to setup voicemail. When you go into settings / call / voicemail service to change from my carrier to google voice. I get an error stating it will not call forward correctly please contact your carrier. Google voice then partially works. If someone calls it rings 10 times, because the system is forwarding all my calls to the google voice #. Can anyone please help? I called HTC and they were useless. I also called AT&T, but did not escalate to a higher support.
Not sure if it makes a difference, but you might try going through the Google Voice settings, and choose to use Google Voice voicemail instead of the carrier. When you do this, Google Voice should automatically change the voicemail service for you.
If you're trying to change the voicemail carrier on your own, without having gone through GV's settings, there might be some sort of disconnect taking place...
Just a thought - let me know if it works, since I'll be setting up GV on my One X when I get it!

I had this same problem when I got my phone yesterday. What I did to work around this was go to the Google Voice website > Settings. Then I selected "Activate Google Voicemail on this phone". It will then give you instructions for #s to dial on your phone to activate Google Voice voicemail for your phone.

this.
Try this: link to set up pictures Only draw back is that when people call my GV number and I want to decline, it loops back and calls again, so I have to decline the call 3 times. If i silence the phone, it will eventually go to voicemail.
SMS works via GV or AT&T
Dialing out works via GV or AT&T
GV voicemail works for people calling either AT&T or GV number.
I get the transcription for calls for either AT&T or GV number.
Tested for 30 minutes and seems to be working.
Make sure to read the comments in the pictures. It has details on set up.

here's a great example. those pictures. i don't have the option about texts. google only wants to use vm. i have no check box about forwarding texts. it's just not there. if you could help me it would be wonderful. i would like to drop the $20 text plan and just use data and g.voice to send my texts.

i went for an all new number, and now it's working properly. i can use either att or gv. but i can't seem to get it to work like i want. end goal, i want to use google voice to send an sms, over data, and it shows up on the other person's phone as the number i've established already (my att number) that all my contacts etc have. i can't seem to make this happen, it keeps showing up for the other person as my gv number.

When sending sms you must initiate the conversation from Google voice if you want other people to see your Google voice number and so they will respond to your sms to you Google voice application.
If you send a sms from your stock messaging app or any play store messaging app it will always use you ATT phone number. Also people that sms your ATT number, those messages will appear in stock messaging app. There is no way to have those forwarded to Google voice.
The people that successfully use Google voice exclusively (avoid messaging fees from ATT) have to tell everyone not to use their ATT number and cancel their messaging service. People that continue to send sms to that number will not know it's been cancelled likely and think you are ignoring them.
If you like using a stock messaging app or alternative, you can forward sms from your Google voice app to you messaging app. People that sms you to Google voice will have those forwarded to you messaging app (settings, sync and notifications, receive text messages, select radio button: via the messaging app)

. From there you can reply and they will see your Google voice number. I do this often.
I use both phone numbers because Google voice doesn't allow mms currently
It's complicated but I have become accustomed to it.

So I've been using Google voice as my main number. This allows me to switch SIM cards and keep my number, which is useful since I travel back and forth a lot. I can always just dial a number and it calls (Intl or not) and when I'm outside the US I can be contacted at my regular number. All I have to do is install the Google Voice app to route calls and use Hangouts for SMS (or calls if using Chrome on a desktop).
That said, I think I found a problem with Google Now integration. Calls are not a problem: "OK Google call John" works fine, it dials John's number via Google Voice. Texting however defaults to sending via the SIMs number, even if I select "always reply via Google Voice" in the Hangouts app. Since I don't ever really use the SIMs number, this has resulted in quite a few people texting me back "who is this?" after I text them using Google Now.
I know a solution is to just not use Google Now to text, but it's quite useful with a handsfree while driving and such.
