Google My Location - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

I have recently been having a problem with the Google home page
showing my location. It now will just say "Acquiring Location"
I am running Fresh 1.1 on a Sprint CDMA Hero. Sprint Nav and Google Maps
work fine, Latitude works as well. GPS works fine. But you shouldnt need GPS to use the My Location feature in Google, before it was finding the phone fine based off the network. Any ideas what is up and why i am having
this issue?

Same with me too.

This is happening to me also. Started Friday, well I noticed it then. Oddly enough it still works on the Buzz mobile site. After a quick google, it seems this is affecting Droid owners also. This made me feel a little better :/ Two people in the thread happen to be from Massachusetts like myself. I reflashed, I wiped and same thing 'acquiring location' I think it might be Google's end because it still works for some.

A little update. http://powerdeck.sprint.com Weather section still finds my location.

Google Maps and Orbit 2

Hi
I'm running google maps on an xda orbit 2 (o2) but can't get the "my location" to work.
Has anyone else got it working okay ? And if so, what settings did you use ? I just got seem to get the gps working on it
Any help appreciated.
Whatever the default settings are after it installs worked fine for me on my HTC Touch Cruise... 'My Location' picks up from the nearest cell tower at first, and after a GPS fix is obtained, it switches over to that.
I have noticed it takes longer with the newer version of Google Maps; and sometimes exiting and restarting the program seems to speed the whole process up. I've also tried running QuickGPS just before running Google Maps, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
Thanks for the reply.. its amazing, i steped outside my door and it worked fine lol couldn't believe how accurate it is as well, esp when moving in a car, left up all the time..

Verizon TP2 GPS only works after using VZ navigator.

Hi all, I am experiencing a bit of a strange problem that I have only seen duplicated here http://forums.verizon.com/t5/PDA-Sm...6;jsessionid=CA9AC87365188A46401DEAC053629BFF
My issue is that no matter what I try (including exchanging my phone for another new tp2) I can not get my gps to acquire satellite locks in bing or google maps. My location is on, my gps settings are all correct, always use quick gps and still nothing. The best I ever got was using gps viewer I managed to "see" up to 6 satellites at a time but never got a location or a lock...usually it sees 1-3 at a time and they fade in and out quickly. Still google maps has never shown anything but (0) satellites....UNTIL! I found the link above and called tech support. He informed me that because I was a prior alltel customer that I could not activate vz navigator (even for testing purposes) and I would have to switch my plan to allow this.
After reading the above forum link I called BS and proceeded to install VZ navigator and activate the free 1 day trial without issue. VOILA! I get an instant gps lock..full navigation (not just a-gps) and I can even turn off vz navigator and all of my 3rd party apps receive the same reception and all get locks near instantly.
I know some of you geniuses out there can figure out what and why this is happening. Also I would like to note that although I never ran vz navigator on them, I did reflash to 2 different roms and had no luck with gps lock either.
Here is my basic info in case it is relevant.
Rom version 1.18.605.12
Date 8/15/09
Radio 1.88.07WV
PRL 40059
I refuse to believe that I will have to pay for something that should be unlocked and free OR that if I want to use a different program that I will have to start and run VZ nav first.
Have you used the QuickGPS tool provided by verizon? I used this and the GPS then worked instantly. I never used VZ navigator
Yes. As I stated in my first post, I used quickgps each time with no luck. I again today tried before my trial ran out and vz navigator is the key to my gps receiving a signal.
I am having this same issue. I stood out in a blizzard today for 15mins to try and get a signal with no luck. Although I have not tried VZ nav to try and get a signal...I cant stand VZ nav anyways...
I'm not sure if I should be puzzled, or happy?...but suddenly my gps works!
After my vz nav demo ran out I noticed that the gps went right back to the same broken state, and was that way for a couple days until I finally just gave up playing with it, until yesterday when a co-worker asked if I could get directions to a supply house we were driving toward... I said "well yes, and no" so I fired up google maps and before the map loaded I saw "gps active" then "(8)" and it tracked me in less than 4 sec. Since then my gps has locked every time with every program, even inside my house.
Trust me im glad that everything is working now, but my question is... why? Very random, and I hope it doesnt stop working again, even though I powered it off several times just to make sure.
Sometimes there is no answer as to why. Could just be a glitch. I had a very similar problem in that Remote Desktop wouldn't work unless I had Internet Explorer loaded in the background. Sounds similar to your problem but with different hardware/software. Anyway the problem went away when I flashed my phone to MightyROM. Hope this helped!

[BUG] HTC Weather Sense 2.1 when using Airave

I've been flipping back and forther between Android with Sense 1.5 and 2.1 and have replicated the bug with the weaher program when using "My Location" and a Sprint Airave.
Although in 1.5 the phone seems to pull the location when using the AAirave through the Airave's GPS, 2.1 seems to pull from the cenral office the Airave connects to.
Has anyone tried porting the HTC weather programs from a 1.5 ROM into a 2.1 ROM? I'll look into it just haven't had the time yet.
This is a documented issue. The Airave's GPS is only used in intitial setup, and your phone never receives information from it.
I'm not questionning that it's documented. The weird thing is is that at least for me the issue comes up only one 2.1 ROMs not with 1.5. I know a prior discussion had some people saying it was occuring with ANY sprint device being used on an Airave.
Because of this I didn't know if maybe someone had figured out that it was tied to either a)the HTC weather software itssef or b(how android 2.1 gets location data as compared to 1.5

It has to be b) because HTC Weather gets its data from Google Location Services. Your location will be off in Maps and the browser as well.

Yeah that makes sense. It's just strange that there's no issues related to this in 1.5 (actualy with 1.5 I get a better location lock using an airave than local cell towers)
READ YOUR AIRAVE DOCUMENTATION! this has been brought up before. Airave usage WILL affect location based services on ANY device. Case closed. Lock this and move on!

Good way to help, ass. I'm having the same issue and reading the documentation doesn't help... if you don't know what you're talking about, stick to other threads.
With 1.5 based ROMs the phones were picking up the correct GPS location from Airaves and for some reason if you are on a 2.1 ROM the GPS doesn't get a correct lock for weather. It works fine for maps but not for weather.
edit: I was just poking around in shell and noticed that there are some new .apk's that have to do with the Weather widget that are different from the 1.5 ROMs. I'm going to see if I can see where the WeatherSyncProvider.apk and WeatherAgentService.apk are polling for location. I'll bet there is an error in there that is making it pull up the wrong location...

any luck looking at those sync files? it's seeming like you and I are the only poeple who even acknowledge that its a problem with the weather program and not just blaming it on the Airave
I use an Airave and had the issue until I upgraded the radio on the phone. Since then the location issues on the most recent set of 2.1 roms have been very minor.

I've also been saying that this is exclusive to the 2.1 roms. I've said it until I was blue in the face..... like this guy -->
I've beta tested the airave since it wasn't called an airave, and it's NEVER caused issues with my location services on any phone I've owned.
I can tell you though, in my experience it is NOT based on solely the weather app. I have an app that I wrote to get your geolocation (gps coords) and on the 2.1 roms it has caused a lot of issues. I would get GPS coordinates that put me 30 miles away from where I actually am.
This all changed when I turned off the airave though. So, in my humble opinion, it IS the airave causing the issue, but it's not that cut and dry. It's that coupled with something that Sprint has created that's causing the problem. Here's how I understand it -- the Hero (or any other Sprint phone) will switch to the Airave when a call is being made. It should NOT use it at any other time. However, when I'm in my house, and I update my weather widget OR ANY OTHER APP USING NETWORK BASED LOCATION, it's incorrect. Since I'm not making a call, this should not happen. However, it absolutely does.
For some reason, it is now accessing the airave even when it is not making a call, or at least that's what seems like is happening.

If the Hero only conects to the Airave when on an active phone call then wy when I'm at my home using WiFi will the signals bars spike up and the daa switch from EVDO to 1X? Not trying to refute your research just going by what I see.
This appears to be an older thread, but I am wondering if any conclusions have been found.
I have experienced this same issue. I use an app called Setting Profiles that changes the settings on my phone based location (and other things). I love this app, but it quit working properly when I upgraded to 2.1
I can also just open up google maps when I am at home and it bounces be back and forth between home and a location 20+ miles from my house.
It worked fine before the Airave. Worked fine with the Airave and 1.5. Started having issues with the Airave and 2.1
Would love to solve this problem so I can start using the app again.

From what I understand, this problem should have been occurring from the beginning, as I was told it affects all location services for any sprint phone. It never did this to me when I was on 1.5 though, so I dunno why it changed. My guess is something in the Sprint CDMA Radio for 1.5 was different than in 2.1 and that's allowing the issue to present itself.
As to why it changed when the previous poster was on wifi, I can't answer that one. As I understood it, it should only be using it during a call, but that doesn't seem right either, as location services are messed up at all times. It must have some sort of "heartbeat" signal to make sure it's still connected to the airave or something, or maybe it will connect to 1x data if it needs to. How it was explained to me, however, was that it was only supposed to connect during a call.

[Q] Weather Widget shows wrong location on my new TF

I just got my brand NEW Asus TF 16GB from Amazon. I did the update first.
Then I noticed that it displays the wrong location in the weather widget.
I have GPS, Wifi and Google location tracking enabled.
Anyone else got the wrong location with this Tablet? Any way to get it work properly? I have not tried a different location either.
oh and google map app shows the correct location so I guess it knows where it is. Strange...
I know I can set it manually but I would like to know if it can be fixed to work in auto mode.
Any how this is a great site full of TF information.
Thanks in advance...
VeeKay
yeah, I hope there is a fix for this.
Mine also pinpoints me fine on the map.
But, weather widget says i'm in a small community, two cities away.
And a search to enter location manually, finds my city no problem.
Of course I prefer to leave it on AUTO.
Tap the weather widget and you can set your location manually, or force it to refresh.
I manually set mine to my location, then turned it back to automatic and it's been fine since.
Thanks for the tip
I tried that but unfortunately it didn't work. It goes back to the wrong location
I all of a sudden started having this issue. When i'm at home it says that i'm in a city that's more than 40 miles away which I've never even traveled near with my TF.
I've tried deleting the widget, checking google maps, and still it puts me in the wrong location.
This started happening less than a week ago.
Mine has said "Asahi ku" since I got it... I have no idea where that is.
Does anyone have an alternate GPS program installed like Locus?
I uninstalled that and it looks to be working fine now.

Ok I spoke prematurely.
If I go into Google maps, it places me in the right location but for some reason, starts out in the location 40 miles away.
The Asus widget seems to be broken.

[Q] WP7.5 Bing Maps 3G error

Dear XDA-users,
I have an LG E900 in Sydney Australia on the Optus Network, which has been fully updated to Mango (and then the tethering update). (also chevron unlocked). Its set to Australian region and its an optus rom I think (or whatever comes with the phone...purchased in Australia).
I have a strange issue with my Bing Maps (standard one that comes with the OS).
When I try to "find directions" when I am using my 3G data it comes up with one of two error messages:
1) No Location Information: Bing Maps can't find your location at the moment. Try again later. (but it has found me correctly when I click the "me" button grrr)
2) Bing maps cannot reach the internet. Please check your 3g or wifi connection. (but I am completely connected to the internet).
So I have done some trouble shooting and both of these errors are illogical or incorrect.
first of all, when I click on the "me" circle it finds my location perfectly (scarily so).
Also I scroll around the map and zoom in and out and bing maps is clearly reaching the internet as it is constantly clearing up the resolution. Also I can go to use internet explorer just fine.
I have installed Nokia Drive and Bingle Maps and both of these applicaitons work perfectly for giving me directions on 3G.
Now the kicker, when I am at home and I connect to Wifi bing maps direction does work, but directions on Wifi is essentially useless for me, as its when I am out and about that I could really use it.
One last thing I tried finding directions on 3G data where I put both places as a fully written out address (as opposed to "My Location"), and it still doesn't work BUT if I go to search for an address (not directions), then it finds it straight away.
Is there something I can do to further trouble shoot or fix this error up in anyway? I really want this to work ...
I guess no one knows how to help me.... in that case does anyone know how I can "reset" or "re-install" the maps program or something to trigger it back to proper functionality.
also this is a bump to the first post haha.
Weirdly worked out what was wrong...but not why. In any case my issue is reolved now...
The APN from Optus was 'yesinternet' (as it should be). I had a friend who suggested changing it to just 'internet' like most carriers and see what happens. Did that, restarted the phone and instantly it was working. All other 3G dependant apps like email, explorer still works just fine.... so there you go...
Can anyone explain that?
Its fixed so mods you can put a resolved tag on this one if required.
Interesting. In the states, my 4g stopped working for like 1 whole day and i couldn't figure out why on att. what i did was manually put in the apn settings i found on the internet and it immediately started working. next day set back to auto everything was fine. Think my carrier was messing with settings but wouldn't admit to it.
Handy to keep those apn settings around in case of emergencies. maybe the original uses a proxy that filters out bing and the "internet" one does not?

This makes sense I guess, but pretty poor choice for Optus as they are the official seller of this model of phone in Australia.
