I have searched and searched. I've used this website since my HTC 6700 and usually searching yields the answer i need. . . ..
I have a rooted CDMA Hero running fresh 1.1
but HOW do i install simple programs
i do not have apps2SD because i don't need it. . . .
is it as simple as putting the .apk on the memory card and going to file explorer *on the phone* and running it?
thanks i know this is simple but i do not know how to do it.
yes. it is that simple.
Yes, you can do that or you can install it using ADB
Code:
adb install <app name>.apk
Or you can use HTC Sync or some other 3rd party software to do it.
Astro Works too.. but you must enable 3rd party apps in settings
thanks everyone, i just didn't want to put it on my card and have the phone go crazy not recognizing where the program was.
and why do i have to wait 5 minutes between posts? I've had an account for 2 years.

What app are you trying to install?
i think its just the one apk i'm trying to install is bad, just did it with 3 other ones and its ok.

Lol. I thought that might be why they were being installed from the SD card. Keep in mind, some .apk are not all meant to be run on our Heros. Some are specific to other Android builds, mainly all but our Cupcake 1.5. Lol

Hey all,
I know I just put up my tutorial on how to do this but hopefully this will make things easier for everyone. I'd still suggest doing a nandroid backup first just to make sure but I tested this on my phone so it should work. Just run the app and if this is the first time moving your apps to your sd card(and you want to keep the ones you have) leave the checkbox checked. Otherwise uncheck it. Then just press the buttons that correspond to what you want to do. Enjoy
In order to use this you MUST:
1: Have an apps-to-sd ROM
2: Have your sd card partitioned correctly with FAT32 first and ext2 second.
3: Have busybox already installed to /system/xbin
NOTE: I'll try to help as much as I can but I can't take responsibility for anything this does to your phone. I'm pretty sure nothing bad will happen and nothing irreparable can happen but gotta say these things just to be sure anytime I'm messing with root permissions.
ANOTHER NOTE: I'll put this up in the market for $1. It'll remain free here but people can donate to me that way.
YET ANOTHER NOTE: I've managed to get a new method working that's a lot more stable and flexible. I will keep this thread here but won't be maintaining it.
EDIT: Moving data is too unstable, I've removed the option. It doesn't force close anymore when you don't have the setup right, it just gives an error and wont let you do anything, so that's better.
Tried it this morning and worked great. You might add a pop up at the end of moving apps to restart the device. When less experienced people use it, they won't know to do that I'm afraid.
the app sends me into abootloop at the htc screen

OH SHOOT!!! I fixed this problem on the market one but forgot to put it back up on here. Umm... for now no1 should use the one posted here, until I can get home and post the updated one. OR if you still want to fix this and don't much just a bit of fiddling in the recovery terminal, after moving apps to sd, restart in recovery mode and do this:
Code:
mount data
ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
For anyone who cares about such things, the problem is that it deletes the /data/app folder and then makes a symlink, which sounds ok, except that every super user command has to be run through the whitelist app... which no longer exists. So it's not able to set up the link and all hell breaks loose.
i did use the 1 from here
it says ln: /data/app: file exists
if i already had apps2sd, tried to upgrade my phone from 5.0 to 5.01G, so I wiped...then data.img wouldn't flash over...if i do this, will my apps show up again?

ya it's the one from here that's broken, sorry. If you haven't already flashed back and everything(still have the boot loop) then you can use the code I posted and it should fix it. I'll post the updated version tonight when I get back home.

Yes, just uncheck the checkbox. But you might want to read the note that I just posted, there's a known problem with it that has a fix but requires going into the recovery terminal. I'll post the updated version of this app that doesn't have that bug tonight.

you had the "stale NFS handle" right? I'm not really sure what's going on but something in your phone's file system sounds like it went screwy. Maybe someone like JF or LucidREM could help? Ok question I know it says apps to sd rom is needed does this mean only haykuro roms? I have a jfrc33 1.42 and I could do apps to sd using this rom (planning on doing it tonight my 8gig class 6 card arrived) so my question is can I just use this app or do I need to do all the steps manually

It should work on any apps to sd ROM. This includes LucidREM's modified JF ROMs. If you're gonna be manually changing it into an apps to sd, then I would think it would work but can't promise it. I wasn't able to figure that out when I tried so I'm not 100% sure that they work the same but I would imagine they would. Again, though, the one posted here has that known bug which will be fixed after I get home from work.
Short answer(s):
Haykuro's ROM: definitely works
LucidREM ROM: Don't have it to test it but almost assuredly works
Self-modified: probably works?
Sounds good I wasn't doing it till later tonight anyways (stuck at work also) also is it still a good idea to keep ext2 parititon less then 2gb like lucid reported on his tutorial

The reason the ringtone trimmer from the fresh kitchen didn't work is because its a 1.5 apk n not compatible. You could download flipz ROM and extract it or pm me your email and I'll send it to you

Is there a way to install Astro File manager without using the market? Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market...
Plus, it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time...
To answer this topic quickly. There is no way to install a apk without an apk installer. Be it astro or any other app. There just aint
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
So then you have to get one from the Market? So if you cannot use the market (don't have a connection) you can't install it?
Damn, the next release should include and APK installed because I am sure most people use APKs. If not, then why would they be using Android.
PS, wow no real reply until the second page... (Edit:kekkle's post and this post were on the second page after nobnut filled the first page with troll posts, since then they were deleted so now it's on the first page)
PS2: 100th post
Seriously now...
There is a manual way you can install apks without an apk installer...
Download the apk onto your desktop/laptop. Remove the back panel from your desktop/laptop using a hammer (a claw hammer is best but you can use a pin hammer if you have no claw hammer).
Remove the battery cover from your device (your Android phone not your vibrating butt plug).
Using the tweezers you normally use to masturbate. Find the downloaded apk and carefully place it underneath the battery. Reinsert the battery and battery cover.
Before you restart the device, firmly knock the device against a hard surface like the wall or a hard floor about 15 times until you are sure you have started the kernel flux capacitor.
Then restart the device.
If the device fails to start normally, take it back to the stockist and tell them you were born retarded and that you want to trade it in for an iPhone.
If you've got an HTC Phone you can install ASTRO (or any APK) using HTC Sync.

Just use droid explorer and close this thread
or you can use adb to install apks.
so in short yes there are ways to install apk without market.
I use Android Mate for my file manager. Also MybackupPro which backs up my apk's. Ones I download from the Market, phone browser or home computer all get put in one folder & merged with a backup on my sdcard. If I need an app later and in bad cell coverage can install without downloading again.
From what I understand only apps from the Market are updated so I try and download it there first.

You just need to download the android sdk and set the usb debug setting on the phone (Settings > Application > Development). Then installing is as easy as running "adb install <package.apk>"

Burn, boot, use password renew to reset the password for any account.
I'm trying this, except when I get to "adb shell a2sd install" it says a2sd: not found.
:\
I had to go to /system/bin before i could run a2sd via ./a2sd, after which it worked.

it allows you to use the ext partition from previous versions of CM. Froyo's version now uses a fat32 partition on the sd card, therefore will not read the ext partition and the fact that your apps are on there.

It's not as good, but coming from <= CM5 you may want to port along your apps.
Also Froyo's SD implementation is supported on an per app basis, but can be forced via CM. Note that dalvik cache is only moved to SD when using legacy a2sd.

froyo implementation isn't as good as apps2ext. The froyo method uses the fat32 partition but only if the dev of the app allows it to be moved to the sdcard. plus the apps don't all load on boot because the phone has to mount (prepare)the fat32 partition of the sdcard. This is the reason that many apps are not launching at boot like SetCpu and other root access apps, because the system boots before the sdcard is prepared. This is also the reason why many widgets and apps are missing from the app drawer for a lot of people as well. Cyanogenmod really needs to look at this and think about changing back to the old cm5 way of doing things.
I am trying to find a good backup app as doing a Nandroid did not work for me with doing aps2sd this way.

Thanks man!
Is there anyway of using swype on this phone without going through the root process and loaded a custom ROM?
TIA
You can sign up for the beta at http://swypeinc.com, but since the phone is locked down to keep you from installing non-Market apps, you won't be able to install the file they send you. If you can get your hands on the .apk file for the installation, you can use Sideload Wonder Machine to install it without needing root access.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-inspire-4g/60295-guide-installing-swype-beta-htc-inspire-4g.html
I don't know if it requires root, but I have root and I got mine. lol
Thanks, I will give it a shot
I tried every trick known to man .. lol ... the only way you are going to get swype if it is an ATT phone is to root the phone otherwise they have blocked the option.
I was able to install it via Side Wonder Machine. I must say, it's amazing.
Install APK's easily
This is the best way at least for me. Super easy and the software has many other uses.
(P.S. I stole this... it's from some android forum)
1. Download Droid Explorer for your system. http://de. codeplex. com/ (remove spaces from link)
2. Now, go to your phone. Settings> Applications> Development > USB Debugging.
3. Make sure you downloaded the drivers for the captivate then plug in your phone and select PC connect and mount the phone.
4. Now open Droid Explorer and connect the device. Right click and select batch install.
5. Now a screen should pop up and you should select the APKs you would like to install and it is self explanatory from there on out.
Go here
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-inspire-4g/60295-guide-installing-swype-beta-htc-inspire-4g.html
Register and follow the instructions.
This was posted in the other thread about keyboards for the inspire. It's exactly what I did and My phone is 100% stock. No root or anything.

I can sideload fine and got the installer on my phone but it won't download the actual swype.apk. Instructions say to wait even though it's an error... Waited half hour and still no swype.apk appeared in downloads folder.
Took the swype.apk provided in this forum. Installed fine but out of date... which is fine. I'm happy to get officially from Swype. Tried the swype installer now I have swype (out-of-license) installed. Installer said you need to update license. Ok fine. Great! Tried and came up with error.
I love swype that I had on my captivate. I would pay for the app. Just not sure I'm willing to root my two day old phone just to get swype on it...

I used the androidcentral method. Worked fire me, no root. Just sign up for the beta on swype's website. Then go from there. I think I was stuck in the same part as you. Basically you just continue on with the process don't worry about the part that says wait or error.
You will get the updated installer direct from swype website.

I got swype before the update. So I removed swype and swype installer. Then went to http://beta.swype.com/android/get and went through the android central method again.
