[Q] Anyway to install SWYPE - HTC Inspire 4G

Is there anyway of using swype on this phone without going through the root process and loaded a custom ROM?
TIA

You can sign up for the beta at http://swypeinc.com, but since the phone is locked down to keep you from installing non-Market apps, you won't be able to install the file they send you. If you can get your hands on the .apk file for the installation, you can use Sideload Wonder Machine to install it without needing root access.

I don't know if it requires root, but I have root and I got mine. lol

Thanks, I will give it a shot

I tried every trick known to man .. lol ... the only way you are going to get swype if it is an ATT phone is to root the phone otherwise they have blocked the option.

I was able to install it via Side Wonder Machine. I must say, it's amazing.

Install APK's easily
This is the best way at least for me. Super easy and the software has many other uses.
(P.S. I stole this... it's from some android forum)
1. Download Droid Explorer for your system. http://de. codeplex. com/ (remove spaces from link)
2. Now, go to your phone. Settings> Applications> Development > USB Debugging.
3. Make sure you downloaded the drivers for the captivate then plug in your phone and select PC connect and mount the phone.
4. Now open Droid Explorer and connect the device. Right click and select batch install.
5. Now a screen should pop up and you should select the APKs you would like to install and it is self explanatory from there on out.

Go here

Register and follow the instructions.
This was posted in the other thread about keyboards for the inspire. It's exactly what I did and My phone is 100% stock. No root or anything.

Followed the AndroidCentral method last night and it worked great!

It works like a champ!!!!
I love this forum!

How have I managed to live without Swype?! Just got it installed yesterday and its amazing!

Install using sideload wonder machine. If this isn't cool to post just let me know and I will remove it.

Thank you so much, I could not get Swype on my Inspire. I was sent invite for the Beta, but when I click on their link I got message this is not an Android Phone. Awesome Job thanks.

Thanks as well. I should be getting my Inspire tomorrow. I'm so used to swyping on my captivate this should make my life easier. Can't wait to sideload this on.

Does anyone know if its possible to use the swype from the motorola's? Like the atrix, droid x etc. I really like the theme of that one.

Nope, none of these worked
The Android Central method--i don't get past the ADB command, computer doesn't know what to do with that...
I can sideload fine and got the installer on my phone but it won't download the actual swype.apk. Instructions say to wait even though it's an error... Waited half hour and still no swype.apk appeared in downloads folder.
Took the swype.apk provided in this forum. Installed fine but out of date... which is fine. I'm happy to get officially from Swype. Tried the swype installer now I have swype (out-of-license) installed. Installer said you need to update license. Ok fine. Great! Tried and came up with error.
I love swype that I had on my captivate. I would pay for the app. Just not sure I'm willing to root my two day old phone just to get swype on it...

I used the androidcentral method. Worked fire me, no root. Just sign up for the beta on swype's website. Then go from there. I think I was stuck in the same part as you. Basically you just continue on with the process don't worry about the part that says wait or error.
You will get the updated installer direct from swype website.

I got swype before the update. So I removed swype and swype installer. Then went to http://beta.swype.com/android/get and went through the android central method again.

seems like a simple question to me, how to install .apk files

I have searched and searched. I've used this website since my HTC 6700 and usually searching yields the answer i need. . . ..
I have a rooted CDMA Hero running fresh 1.1
but HOW do i install simple programs
i do not have apps2SD because i don't need it. . . .
is it as simple as putting the .apk on the memory card and going to file explorer *on the phone* and running it?
thanks i know this is simple but i do not know how to do it.
yes. it is that simple.
Yes, you can do that or you can install it using ADB
Code:
adb install <app name>.apk
Or you can use HTC Sync or some other 3rd party software to do it.
Astro Works too.. but you must enable 3rd party apps in settings
thanks everyone, i just didn't want to put it on my card and have the phone go crazy not recognizing where the program was.
and why do i have to wait 5 minutes between posts? I've had an account for 2 years.

the application package installer (process com.android.packageinstaller) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
so just clicking on it and running it didn't work, i guess i'll try through adb

i think its just the one apk i'm trying to install is bad, just did it with 3 other ones and its ok.

Lol. I thought that might be why they were being installed from the SD card. Keep in mind, some .apk are not all meant to be run on our Heros. Some are specific to other Android builds, mainly all but our Cupcake 1.5. Lol

Backflip Swype

I'm trying to get Swype on my backflop. I know we can't install non-market apps, and already figured out the adb trick last Sunday when I got the phone. My problem is that with the Swype beta it downloads an INSTALLER which downloads ANOTHER apk (pretty sure to /data/apps/ if that's the one we can't access). So I can't install swype.
I tried ripping it off my Droid and installing it, but it gets screwed up because they are different resolutions.
Any ideas?
Try this - Removed due to the fact that swype is not meant for free distribution
That's from Firerat
I'll give it a shot, but I was looking for a slightly newer version.
The beta one is 1.25.16.5652
Edit: Got it going, thanks.
Still looking for a version newer than 1.16.12.5228.219 if anyone has.
Been running it for a couple days now - no issues what so ever - just saying
problem
i too have the backflip and tried to get swype on it through the download you provided, but i doesnt seem to work. help?
I'm running 1.16.12.5230.t, which is the highest I've seen supported on Backflip.
Not much better than 1.16.12.5228.219, but whatever.
Thank you for sharing

Has anyone else gotten the "Trial Over - Please Buy Full Version" message with this version? Maybe I'll try rolling back to the other 1.16.

Yep, I've tried many apk's since then and all have either giving me the same message or an install error. Lame!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683430 Install with ADB and viola!
Current non-beta version?
Does anyone know the most recent Swype out for Android? Thanks.
The way I did it was:
Sign up for beta, Open link in email
Move Swype-Installer.apk from the sdcard's downloads folder to the computer
Exit MS mode, make sure USB debugging is on, adb install Swype-Installer.apk
Open Swype Installer, follow steps until you get the "Installing 3rd party apps is not enabled" error, DO NOT HIT OK, leave the error up.
adb pull /data/data/com.swype.android.installer/files/mypackage.apk (this is the temp file where it saves the specific apk for your device/version/options)
adb install mypackage.apk
On phone, hit OK for the error. If it licenses it and has steps to enable, terrific. If not, exit and relaunch Swype Installer, then license it and do the steps.
The current version (at least for my US AT&T Backflip) is 2.15.56.14870.t100
Edit: ffff sorry for the gravedig.
Edit2: These instructions for enabling 3rd party apps also worked for me: h--p://modmymobile.com/forums/567-motorola-backflip-general/559152-fully-unlock-3rd-party-apps-backflip.html

BlackGlassSwype (NO EXPIRATION)

I know there are 3(or more) existing swype threads. I KNOW THIS. I just threw my swype kb file folder from black glass into the full version swype for those that wanted a BlackGlass swype that didnt know how to do it themselves. Get it HERE. If any one wants a new color lemme know and ill put it up when i get a chance, so we have more colors to choose from.
If you cant get it make sure you hav3 done the following:
for those who are getting expired messages try removing all traces of Swype:
1. In terminal,
Code:
rm /data/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
2. In terminal,
Code:
rm -r /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod
3. Clear your dalvik-cache
I've not gotten an expiration yet, but hopefully this works for you

its always worked for me. Im currently using this exact apk in my rom. Not sure what the problem could be. You can always take the libs from it and throw them in your roms lib folder (using root explorer on an already installed system), thats how i make it work out of the box in my mods. It should just install, i normally use andro or root exp to install apps that werent included in the rom. Root commander works great too. I dont use adb for apk installation.
I tried pushing it first then used Astro to install

right on. if not pm n ill get it going for you. i have a few diff. copies, but this is the one im currently using. I had to mess with it some to get it to work with a new rom install(its a choice from get go) so i learned a little about installing it
Not working for me either... used Linda and Estrongs file explorers... neither worked.
Do you need a previous version of Swype installed for it to work?
Won't install for me either

Yeah im going to guess if you had swype previously installed this one probably wont install for you.
the **** doesnt install anyway i tried, i did have it previously, what folder do i adb pull from?
I used Advanced task manager to uninstall my previous version, then Estrongs File Explorer to install this one, works fine for me. Thanks!

system/app...you will probably need to list the files to see exactly what its named to remove.
adb remount
adb shell
cd system/app
ls
rm whateveritsnamed.apk
This is a developer site right? Well this is just an app install. I put it up to help ppl out not piss them off. Ive listed the best way to do it and it works FLAWLESSLY. Please do the following or listen to my previous instructions before threadbombing...This is not hard, so please calm down and try not to get upset. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
INSTRUCTIONS

1)REMOVE ANY EXISTING SWYPE YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE
2)MAKE SURE ITS ACTUALLY GONE(it can be pesky to remove)
3)DOWNLOAD THE APK TO SD
4)USE ANDROZIP FILE EXPLORER TO INSTALL THE FILE(i think astro works too)
5)ENABLE YOUR SWYPE OPTION FROM settings/language keyboards
6)LONG PRESS ON A TEXT ENTRY FIELD
7)TAP INPUT METHOD
8)CHOOSE SWYPE TO USE IT

And lastly if this does not work for you and you still really want swype i have a rom i just put up yesturday that has swype, android kb, and htc kb included and you just select whichever you want to use(no installing anything). Good luck AND MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU(im not a star wars freak, just seemed like the right thing to say)

Thanks, was missing my black kb, any chance we could get the micro black version? Mine quit on me yesterday morning

Install APK installer without market

Is there a way to install Astro File manager without using the market? Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market...
Plus, it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time...
To answer this topic quickly. There is no way to install a apk without an apk installer. Be it astro or any other app. There just aint
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
So then you have to get one from the Market? So if you cannot use the market (don't have a connection) you can't install it?
Damn, the next release should include and APK installed because I am sure most people use APKs. If not, then why would they be using Android.
PS, wow no real reply until the second page... (Edit:kekkle's post and this post were on the second page after nobnut filled the first page with troll posts, since then they were deleted so now it's on the first page)
PS2: 100th post
Seriously now...
There is a manual way you can install apks without an apk installer...
Download the apk onto your desktop/laptop. Remove the back panel from your desktop/laptop using a hammer (a claw hammer is best but you can use a pin hammer if you have no claw hammer).
Remove the battery cover from your device (your Android phone not your vibrating butt plug).
Using the tweezers you normally use to masturbate. Find the downloaded apk and carefully place it underneath the battery. Reinsert the battery and battery cover.
Before you restart the device, firmly knock the device against a hard surface like the wall or a hard floor about 15 times until you are sure you have started the kernel flux capacitor.
Then restart the device.
If the device fails to start normally, take it back to the stockist and tell them you were born retarded and that you want to trade it in for an iPhone.
If you've got an HTC Phone you can install ASTRO (or any APK) using HTC Sync.

I reported most of nobnut's posts here, so that should be happening soon
Just use droid explorer and close this thread
or you can use adb to install apks.
so in short yes there are ways to install apk without market.
I use Android Mate for my file manager. Also MybackupPro which backs up my apk's. Ones I download from the Market, phone browser or home computer all get put in one folder & merged with a backup on my sdcard. If I need an app later and in bad cell coverage can install without downloading again.
From what I understand only apps from the Market are updated so I try and download it there first.

You just need to download the android sdk and set the usb debug setting on the phone (Settings > Application > Development). Then installing is as easy as running "adb install <package.apk>"

Installing from Unknown Sources

hey all
I have an Evo and my buddy just got the Inspire. One big thing I noticed is there is no option to enable installing APKs from unknown sources. Ive checked every setting menu and it is nowhere to be seen!
Any info on this? I found a desktop work around, but his swype beta wont work with the desktop workaround.
Thanks!
Att block this, use sideloading or root the phone. If u get the right swype version, it will work with sideload.
the sideloading only got me the installer, but then the installer needs to download the rest of it, and i cant due to the unknown sources. thats really my (well HIS) only problem. i get the installer o there but then cant do **** with it

I had the same problem on my Inspire, but this thread has the solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6798357
Since you already have the installer on there (like I did), you just need to follow the instructions in that thread from when you get the blocked install error.
Good luck!
Sideload Wonder Machine is working perfectly for me. Make sure to follow the steps exactly. The only thing I had to do was update my .net framework to the newest version.
Sideload here on XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
so i did get it working and heres how. sideloaded the installer, then sideloaded a backup of MY swype to the phone and tried to install it. it didnt like mine because it wasnt on his license, so i hit get license, the phone kinda freaked out a bit, but i restarted and now it works like a dream no issues. thanks yall, all it took was a little inginuity and 3rd party software hehehe
