using linux to burn roms

Any one know if there exists tools to connect and burn roms from a linux box, instead of a windows? I'm not interested in burning a linux rom on to my tilt (not yet, anyway). Just using a linux desktop instead of windows. I have tried using windows from a vm, but had problems with the usb connection.
If you can point me to the source of the tools, I can, probably, help port them to linux. however, I'm guessing the tool that establishes the communication (handshaking) with the kaiser would be the bulk of the requirement.

If you mean flash ROMs, then use the sdcard method. Hope this helps.

You can also use WINE to run the app.

if you actually searched you'd see there is already a tool, search for htcflasher. and its called flashing, not burning.

I flash off the card almost exclusively. I use the office computer for hardspl if there is an update, but a simple card reader and mepis is more than happy to help me swap roms.

While "flashing" is the term that correctly describes the process that loads software into the phone, "burning" has for a very long time been a verb that describes writing to ROM. It's actually the use of "ROM" that is incorrect because the phone's memory is not really read-only.

you need to compile and insert the ipaq kernel module for it to work.
Personally, i still haven't got it working on gentoo (compiled from source) but im gonna try again later.
Havent had *any* luck using wine/vmware/virtualbox or any emulation as it messes with the USB. Active sync definitely doesn't work through wine.

I had a go at it through Parallels on a Macbook and it worked smoothly.

I did the hack kit using terminal commands. install android sdk for mac and everything else is just step by step in the hack kit. there's a gold card app on the market too.

It runs Windows in a windowed format through Mac OS as opposed to booting up in Windows like Boot Camp.

I actually ended up using the hack kit with terminal commands and adb. It was my first time rooting and i see the value of doing it this way. You gain more knowledge of what is happening with your phone. And if you have a mac with out a virtual windows machine then I want to recommend not being afraid of manual rooting.

I did the same thing the first time I rooted an Inspire. I believe I Still have the terminal output I saved (I was siked I got it to work - it was my first bit of rooting/terminal use ever). If it would help to see what I did, PM me.
EDIT: and Yes, above poster killersnowman is 100% correct. When you do it yourself you learn much more. When I first got my (first) inspire, I looked at the root instructions and they were WAY over my head. After just clicking around and browsing around on XDA, I felt like I was ready to tackle it after a few short days. Granted, it took me probably around three hours of trial, error, and asking for help from the incredibly helpful people on this board - but I got it! You can too.

I did the Simple Root running Windows XP in Parallels without a problem on my MacBook Pro. Now I am wanting to go back and redo the root with the Hack Kit to solve the HUSPA problem we simple root people are having but I am having a few problems with the terminal. For some reason I keep getting told HTC device is not found when I run the first command.
If anyone does use the hack kit on a mac and figures this out please let me know. The Mac users are the minority with Android so we need to stick together a bit here. I still am yet to find a good set of directions on how to "use" the terminal. When the Hack Kit directions start with "navigate to the folder" I have to assume I am doing things right by typing in the file path.
If you did pull it off and are willing to do a screen capture of your terminal that would be pretty great too.

When navigating to a folder on a mac, in the terminal, the command is: cd
Then, I would try to do as little typing as necessary to avoid a mistake. I would put in the command cd and then from my finder, physically drag the folder I wanted to navigate to INTO the terminal window, which automatically puts the correct file path.
cd [drag the folder into the terminal window from finder] and voila! It really is pretty easy. Now that you know that, take another look at the directions and see if you think you can make your way through them.
The only mistake I kept running into which someone helped me out with was that I wasn't making the gold card correctly. When I put the command in to the terminal, I wasn't specifying the actual drive, I was specifying a partition on the drive, and the goldcard failed, but looked like it succeeded. 99.9% of the problems you can run into have to do with making an incorrect goldcard I believe.

I have been trying this without restoring to stock, running CM7. I continue to get the "Error detecting HTC phone on USB connection". I will probably restore to stock when I have more than 3 minutes of free time... So it might be a while!!!
If anyone pulls this off without being restored to stock or while running CM7 any advice would be appreciated.

Is usb debugging on? Is the phone connected but NOT in usb mass storage mode? Im not sure but i think cm7 gets rid of fasboot so i dont think you can turn it off
Also if you have cm7 installed then why do you want to root it again? Its already rooted. If you want a new rom the just use rom manager. But if you want to root again then you should restore to stock
Its from my damn phone!!!

Yes, I am set up with USB debugging on but for some reason it will still not recognize the phone, I am sure it has to do with the fact that I am not running a stock ROM.
The reason I want to root again is because I do not have HSUPA enabled because I rooted with the Simple Root, which flashes a stock radio on that does not allow for HSUPA. Using the Hack kit you end up with the right radio that allows you to have the faster upload speeds. I also want to do the hack kit so I can get a better understanding of terminal commands and adb. I have been never found a reason to use the terminal before so this is a nice new challenge.

hi everyone well im getting a custom built pc soon but not sure which os so what do you think (also i have heard there are also driver problems and ubuntu is not for gaming)
Run Ubuntu then run windows inside of it
Run Windows then run ubuntu inside of it
only thing is i cant burn windows straight away so ubuntu is probably the way to go
all input would be appreciated

Neither. Dual-boot it so that both Linux and Windows are both running natively as it's a much better way to run them.

Not a problem. It is slightly trickier installing Linux first, then Windows - but not a real problem. You will just have to make sure that you keep your Linux Live image handy so you can re-install the Linux bootloader afterwards as Windows doesn't like sharing with anything else

Yeah, definitely dual-boot if you must have Linux, though I find it's a rather irrelevant operating system.

Android and GNU+Linux are largely unrelated. That said, it's hard to see how he could call the latter "irrelevant". It's really only "irrelevant" if you are a hardcore gamer (and even then, there are pretty decent stopgap solutions for many games, and steam is also coming).

I often work with Windows 7, then install Wubi to create a dual-boot system with Ubuntu (except that the Ubuntu disk is stored inside a virtual disk file on the host filesystem, whilst still running on its own).
Try it, super easy, simple and safe

Wubi is more vulnerable to corruption in the event of a hard reboot, and is naturally slower.

The problem with ubuntu (alone) is that the first things you do is to install WINE (or else it does not last long).
If you install a dual boot and if you are accustomed to windows most of the time you will use windows.
for a time I had windows and ubuntu installed but it was really useless however do it if you want it costs nothing more (first install windows and next ubuntu, it's easier in this order)

I use Arch linux and let me tell you mtp is a pain in the butt, I ended up having to use a ftp server, and for my sd card I use a root ap called SG USB MASS STORAGE ENABLER by Mohhamad Abu-Garbeyyeh.

I'm using Ubuntu but there's no way I'm playing with my phone on it - I have a Windows partition just for that sort of thing. Maybe if it weren't my daily driver, I'd be willing to give it a shot but, while I use Linux for just about everything, it's just easier to have a Windows partition for some things. This being one of them.
Hats off to you though - takes guts (& knowledge) I don't have!

A couple of things I have found:
1. While MTP did not work with my Mint 15 system and stock android 4.1.2 on my phone, once I rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed cyanogenmod, it worked like a charm.
Before, when I plugged in my phone, I would get multiple error windows saying the MTP system wasn't available. I had to use windows (yuck!) and odin to get root and unlock the bootloader (although I did not try the virtualbox windows until after I had done this). I installed the most recent version of cyanogenmod and now the Mint system recognizes the MTP just fine. No error windows or anything.
2. I was able to get a virtualbox windows machine to recognize the phone, although it required different usb filters for download mode and for typical mtp.
This required going into download mode, selecting the appropriate filter in virtualbox, unplugging the phone, booting up the virtual machine and then replugging the phone. After this, odin recognized the phone. I did not attempt to flash anything further, though, since I had already done so from a windows system.

I think Ubuntu ships with mtp and its libraries now

I used to use arch Linux. Such a fun distro. Then work started using a TS gateway and it started become too much a hassle. Installed Windows 8, no longer fighting the system :screwy:

What do you mean you have a windows partition? I have a laptop that's quad booted with Windows 7, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Pear OS 8. I want to take Windows out of the picture but I need it for things like this. Could you give me more details on this like does it act like a windows system? It'd be much appreciated.

So guys I am new to Linux and the OpenSource ideology. Is there a ' - for Dummies' kind of guide which you people know of so that I can get started. I have questions in mind like - "How is Linux different from Windows ?". So, to cut a long story short, how and from where do I get started ?
(By the way, I am running Ubuntu Linux in a virtual machine via vmware player. So until I am comfortable enough with Linux, I can't even think of installing it directly onto my hard drive.)

You can look at the Ubuntu wiki, which is very well made and self-explanatory.

I think the Ubuntu wiki is a good place to start for those high-level questions. I'd also highly recommend at least getting comfortable with using the command line. You don't need to learn every command, but it's a very useful tool.

I would recommend you install Gentoo or Arch to learn the fastest. Installing ubuntu is too "easy"
