VMWare image of the source building environment

Hi all, I'm sorry if this has already been asked, i looked for it using Google and the search forum option and while i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396782&page=145, (using this: http://www.google.com/cse?cx=000825...ource&sa=Search&cof=FORID:0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) it didnt really help me because it's not exactly what i'm looking for
I want to be able to change some bits of code on the os and see how that affects the device (for example, i'd like to change the order of options in the menus and stuff like that) just to get to know the development environment better.
however, I'm using Microsoft windows (vista x64) and cannot build it on this env (according to: http://source.android.com/download --> "To build the Android source files, you will need to use Linux or Mac OS. Building under Windows is not currently supported.").
therefore i was wondering, did anybody make a vmware image that is ready to use that contains the environment and the sources that will only need a source update and can be built immediately after for noobs like me?
I'm sure I'm not the only one running a windows machine and so i guess somebody has already made one for himself, I'm asking if you could maybe share it somehow...

Clarification: I'm not talking about the SDK building but rather the actual OS source code so that i can re-build and put on my phone
note: tried this: http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/building-android-source-and-deploying.html, didn't work, but it gives an idea of what I'm looking for...

did u try running a virtualbox with linux? or maybe a macOS off a usb?

for windows, have you tried cygwin?

I've installed it just fine in ubuntu in vmware.
I'd about 8 gb. quite hard to make an image out of it.

[Q] [ANDROID] ROOT HELP: Motorola Backflip with MAC OSX

Hello All:
I have had lots of fun learning from you guys and lurking. I have modified my homescreen and love running Go Launcher EX on my backflip. But now, I need more!
I have tried, without success, to root my Motorola Backflip on Mac. So I've come to the experts. I know its not the best android phone, but it's what I have until I am eligible for upgrade.
I have searched and found similar threads with no answers. Perhaps they were overlooked. I cannot use unrevoked because I own a Backflip.
Is there anyone here who has done it and can help? I would like to root, overclock and perhaps whatever the most stable Cyanogen rom is?
It is currently running the Motorola provided 2.1 upgrade with a few apps.
I am on Mac OSX 10.5

Hey, I have neither the phone or a Mac but since I'm prepping to upgrade my friend's backflip from 1.5(!) to whatever the most stable rom is, this caught my attention.
I don't have any direct experience to offer you, but I have thought of a workaround to at least get you on a similar page as everyone else.
Your issue is that you have a Mac combined with a very unpopular phone so you really can't find simple easy solution to rooting and Rom(ing) your phone so I'm thinking that if you can switch your platform to something with universal instructions you can then go to the basics of using ADB to root your phone as I'm sure that there are guides for that.
So I'm thinking that you would use Ubuntu or an Ubuntu deriviative (as there are a few guides about achieving root and ADB through Ubuntu) and then find instructions for rooting your phone through ADB. It's a little bit of a workaround, but it's not as complicated as it sounds.
Best thing about this method is that you don't have to change anything to your computer as you can use a live CD or a Live USB to run Ubuntu from and then when you're done remove the disc or USB and reboot your computer and you're right back to your normal Mac experience.
First thing you'll need is to find an Ubuntu version that you want to use. I'd recommend 10.10 as 11.04 has some bugs from what I hear and instead of using Vanilla Ubuntu, use one of the skinned versions that come with lots of the visual and effective tasks already implemented (Sort of like HTC Sense over stock Android 1.6) I use Pinguy OS, click here for the review or a really popular version is Linux Mint.
Once that's done, look up instructions for using a Live CD on a Mac. Here's a Set
(You only need to do Step 2 & 3 once you download Linux Mint or Pinguy OS)
Now once you finally have Ubuntu/Pinguy/Linux Mint running,
review this Thread here on getting ADB set up for Ubuntu.
After that, you should be able to find instructions for rooting the Backflip using ADB and then you can play with Rom's to your hearts content.
Okay, I know this looks complicated but it's really pretty simple, it's more reading than actual work.
Read and learn about Ubuntu/Pinguy OS/Linux Mint
Download Version of your choice to a USB or a DVD
Boot into a Live version
Follow ADB in Ubuntu instructions to install it
Find out how to root your phone
Root Phone
Download Rom to root of card and install, enjoy and have fun.
Just remember that do all of your reading before you start, don't get confused about the different versions of Ubuntu because Ubuntu is just the basic not quite as pretty while Pinguy OS and Linux Mint are Ubuntu with some nice gloss and etc...and finally remember that nothing gets saved on your Live USB or Live CD so once you restart the computer, it's all gone so make sure you are rooted and satisfied before you exit the Session.
Once you get all the reading done and comprehended, it's probably not more than 15 minutes of work, if I wasn't in the process of moving, I'd follow the directions as best as I could to see how it works, but I probably won't be stable until next weekend at the earliest.

Why don't you try here? This Site is much more active for the Backflip and maybe you can get some better assistance.

i have a moto backflip rooted and running cyanogenMod 6 and it was a pain in the ass to root and have the rom put on. if you google "update motorola backflip 2.2" you should see something with the name "tech geek guy". he gives u step by step procedure to loading the rom. since we have a moto backflip, we cant use the z4root since the backflip doesnt allow outside market apps to be installed. but once u have this rom on your device, u can install outside apps. anyways. u have to use the one click method or watever its called. i used a pc and not a mac so this is as much info as i can give u. sorry.

[Q] OS X-related root question

I've gone through these forums and searched Google to figure out how to root the MT4GS using OS X, and I'm coming up empty.
I've read about the route using HTC Sync, but that seems to be Windows specific.
People see to point to using revolutionary.io, but it only has a Windows and Linux install. The only suggestion I've come across is installing Ubuntu (or Windows, but usually Ubuntu) inside of Virtual Box and doing it from there.
So I'm wondering if this is the route I need to take or if I'm missing something in the tutorials that makes this easier than I think. I've gotten S-OFF and root on my last phone (G2), so I'm familiar with the process. I just seem to be having some difficulty with this phone.
Again, my apologies for posting yet another rooting question / thread. I just haven't found anything specifically calling out OS X and figured (read: hoped) this might be helpful to others.

Yes, you'll need to find a linux or windows machine to attain S-OFF on your doubleshot. As a big Mac guy myself, I found the easiest thing to do is to just partition your hard drive and use rEFit to manage a dual-boot environment with a widely-used distro like Ubuntu.
Alternatively, should you have a legitimate license for Windows, you can use the Boot Camp Assistant app in your Utilities folder to partition your hard drive and install Windows.
But right now there is just no [easy/clear-cut/simple/realistic] way to attain S-OFF using *only* OS X.

hi everyone well im getting a custom built pc soon but not sure which os so what do you think (also i have heard there are also driver problems and ubuntu is not for gaming)
Run Ubuntu then run windows inside of it
Run Windows then run ubuntu inside of it
only thing is i cant burn windows straight away so ubuntu is probably the way to go
all input would be appreciated

Neither. Dual-boot it so that both Linux and Windows are both running natively as it's a much better way to run them.

Not a problem. It is slightly trickier installing Linux first, then Windows - but not a real problem. You will just have to make sure that you keep your Linux Live image handy so you can re-install the Linux bootloader afterwards as Windows doesn't like sharing with anything else

Yeah, definitely dual-boot if you must have Linux, though I find it's a rather irrelevant operating system.

Irrelevant? Really? Do you have an Android phone? You are aware that Android wouldn't exist without Linux and the Linux kernel ... aren't you?

Android and GNU+Linux are largely unrelated. That said, it's hard to see how he could call the latter "irrelevant". It's really only "irrelevant" if you are a hardcore gamer (and even then, there are pretty decent stopgap solutions for many games, and steam is also coming).

I often work with Windows 7, then install Wubi to create a dual-boot system with Ubuntu (except that the Ubuntu disk is stored inside a virtual disk file on the host filesystem, whilst still running on its own).
Try it, super easy, simple and safe

Wubi is more vulnerable to corruption in the event of a hard reboot, and is naturally slower.

The problem with ubuntu (alone) is that the first things you do is to install WINE (or else it does not last long).
If you install a dual boot and if you are accustomed to windows most of the time you will use windows.
for a time I had windows and ubuntu installed but it was really useless however do it if you want it costs nothing more (first install windows and next ubuntu, it's easier in this order)

[Q] Linux on Android not working

Hi, i have a question.
I wanted to try the Linux on Android app (Ubuntu or Kali Linux) but it seems like i am getting some sort of problems & idk what it causes (however i read that some security thing in cyanogenmod could be it).
First error is when i want to start up linux image from Linux on Android, in terminal it only shows something like this "4;60R".
Second one is when i manually start up one of those linux distributions with terminal, everything seems ok but in androidVNC it shows only grey screen with cross i as mouse in middle, i can move with it but it has no GUI...
It would be awesome if somebody will help me, thanks.
