Hello Everyone,
I was curious as I cannot find a definitive answer to this. Looking at the specs page on HTC (http://www.htc.com/uk/product/hd2/specification.html), it appears that this phone would possibly be usable on a US carrier. I am wondering if using the method in the link below might apply to the HD2 as well. Before you ask why I don't just wait for it to come stateside...well, what's the fun in that?

US Leo
Went to the ATT store yesterday to look at the Pure (hated it) and they went online to check the specs and assured me it would run on their network if it was unlocked!
Yeah...I saw that. Problem is that I am currently with AT&T and am looking to switch to a CDMA carrier. Not too happy with AT&T or T-Mobile at the moment. =\
The word is that it will come to US carriers in The first quarter of 2010. The European specs suggest it will be to AT$T or T-Mobile.
Funny, I switched to AT$T a few years back because Sprint and Verizon really sucked.
After ten years with Nextel and then Sprint, my Blackberry's screen cracked and the hangup button stuck making the phone almost unusable. Even though I was 2 months before my contract was upgrade available, they refused to, after ten years with them, subsidize a new phone. Suffered with my phone for two more months and switched to AT$T, so far they have been great to me.
Somehow I doubt it will come to AT&T, unless they are smart enough to see that this is the best contender against the iPhone. AT&T's monopoly with Apple makes them complacent and slow to provide their customers with alternatives.

Check the vid. This is the snappy WinMo phone we've been waiting for!
HTC HD2---Battery Size, is this 1230 " BIG ENOUGH"???
It's not a Beast, it's Beautiful! The Russians have given us size comparison & review, a must read. It still needs work but so far it's showing itself to be at the top of the list. I believe when it gets updated it will arrive in the US.

I agree, I just don't see it happening. Part of the reason why I left AT&T (and my iPhone) was because of the massive amount of dropped calls. I finally got fed up and switched. But considering the amount of trouble they are having with the iPhone, I doubt they would pickup it's best competitor.
Hmm, I can't remember the last time I dropped a call. Probably happens more in "population dense" areas (e.i., not here).
Anyway, I want to find the answer to this question as well. From all the specs I see the phone is theoretically capable of running on AT&T's 3G (UMTS 850 and 1900 Mhz).
Source: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2062&c=htc_hd2_us_htc_leo
However, I'm not an expert on US phone bands. Perhaps a seasoned XDA developer could help us with this?
Those specs on pdadb are not final "Datasheet State: Preliminary specifications".
But yes, it would do 3G on at&t if finalized UMTS 850 & 1900 Mhz).
I bought one
I just purchased one from amazon on pre-order, my cousin is shipping it to me as soon as it gets to him.
Anyone up for working on building an android rom for for it, not a big fan of WinMobile. In-fact this is the whole reason I got it besides the fact its a sweet phone!!!

This does sound weird..If the main reason of getting the phone is android, why not just wait for a native android phone that has a similar spec? (e.g. HTC Dragon / Acer Liquid / Experia X3)

Not trying to be a jerk, but I figured I would share my insight/experience with the issue you had with Sprint/Nextel, and will probably have with AT&T and any other provider you go with.
I work for T-Mobile currently, and have been there for over 5 years now (and will tell you right now, The HD2 is coming to us.) The issue you had is the most common complaint in the industry. The truth is, no matter where you go, it'll be the same thing. On top of it not being "fair" to customers that are just as loyal, but only have 7 years tenure instead of 10 years, it's the fact that you "only being 2 months away from your full discount pricing," that company could potentially be losing 2 months of your commitment. Meaning, if they make you wait till your contract is over, they'll get a fresh 2 years out of you. If they give it to you 2 months before your contract is over, they'll only get 22 months out of you. You see my point ? Now, what I personally think should be done is, you have 2 months to go ? Okay, we'll make your contract be a solid 26 months, and you get your "full discount" today, early.
Cellphone customers really need to be grateful about getting plan discounts, loyalty credits, full upgrades, partial upgrades. Because let me tell you. Not every business out there gives loyal customers anything. I've been a loyal "Florida Power and Light" customer for 6 years, never had a late payment and inturn have never been given a discount on my electric bill. I mean, how often does your credit card company send you a letter saying, "Hey, you've been such a loyal customer...here's a 12% off discount for being a AAA member, and for every customer you refer to us we'll give you $175 credit to your bill!" Ya know ? I'm not expecting anyone to LIKE this answer. But it IS the reason, and I'm sure the rep's answer that you're dealing with at the time, "Because!," doesn't do it for you. So I figured I'd take the time to inform you guys.

Since you work for T-Mo can post the final specs for the HD2 when they get finalized for the US? I'm with ATT and haven't had a problem with dropped calls for 4 years now.(I think it's something wrong with build of the Iphone) I'm not trying to switch carriers, just want a badass phone.
I want to know what will we be missing in TP2
if we dont get the Htc HD2 ?
All i see is-

Will it run on H or just 3g ( seems like ATT is blocking Hsdpa cos of Heavey load)
Will we be able to do Tethering with it ?
Cos Att blocks that
Anything else im Missing Please ?

I just got off the phone with a HTC tech support. I had some questions about the release date. I wanted to know if it was going to release in Q1 2010 fiscal or Q1 2010 calendar. Get this, he said all he knew was Q1 2010 to T-mobile. sucks for me because T-mobile is non-existent in my neck of the woods.
I agree (I'm w/SECO) but TMO reception is really bad where I live & I've been following the 'LEO' for a long time patiently waiting for it & if it's only going to TMO I think I'm going to ... well maybe get some sort of 'mi-fi' to use it. I need a phone & the HD2 is what I want. Thanks

Why is that?
Hey,
Ok I'm looking for a little help from someone who knows about upgrades at Phones 4 U.
I used to know someone who worked at phones 4 U and know that they will let you "upgrade" early by buying out the remainder of your contract and placing you on a new one instead of giving you cashback or accessory incentives.
My Question is, Does anyone know how early they will let you get an upgrade?
I got my G1 in February 2009 on an 18 month contract. If P4U Will let me upgrade on 12 months I will get the Nexus One (assuming it's out here by then). If they wont, I'd wait for the HTC Bravo. My contract cost's £35 a month and therefore on 12 months it would cost £210 to buyout.
Anyone?
I don't know the answer to this, but I know someone who had a contract with 9mths remaining bought out by Phones4u as they were going onto a new 18mth contract of £35 per month. The previous contract was £30 per month (if I remember correctly).
I think it would depend on the new contract you take out as in is it a big contract (£30+ per month), is it with a handset they're struggling to shift stock of? And also, what's the commission for them like from the operator for getting a new customer on board?
I'd guess that you wouldn't be able to keep your existing number but I could be completely wrong.
Best thing to do would be to go into the store, and make an enquiry at first - test the water. If you hover around the handset stands and they come to you quickly, that'd usually mean they're pushing for sales which is likely as people will be spending less after Christmas!
Given the problems Voda users seem to be experiencing im a little wary of upgrading to this phone first thing, especially as im a longstanding WinMo user jumping ship... The question I'm asking is more directed at those of you UK TMO that have upgraded in the past.
I have the opportunity to get one of these (assumedly uk) simfree for the 15th preordering from an online retailer (yes, the big 'A'.co.uk) for £500. I rang 150 today and natch they were tight lipped about my options as my upgrade isnt for a coupla weeks, but seeing as im on their flext 40 tariff that gives me virtually unlimited everything with no overcharges for data and a FUP of a Gig, I would like to hang on to that. It was however an 18mth contract that let me get the HD2 last Jan. so if i can save ~£20 a month from commiting to a phoneless upgrade then over 2yrs it more or less pays for itself, running by the math.
But just how likely is that saving?
Also they have nothing on their radar yet for this phone in their upgrade dept so it may be a while before they can even offer it to their customers and theres no guarantee I will get it without forking out some towards the handset or maybe even having to go for a new tariff entirely, hence why im leaning towards ordering online to get it sooner.
As i tend to stick with stock roms is a simfree option going to cause issues if i want to use say the online video stream services with the TMO sim, or get upgrades from htc.com in the future for example? Does the rom brand not matter much these days?
Seeing as my upgrade option is before the online store will deliver I will know one way or the other but forwarned is forarmed and I would like to phone TMO up with a bit of an idea of how they play beforehand...
Thanks guys!

I thought that this phone was coming out on T-Mobile in the UK next month but I could be mistaken.
If you are on T-Mobile and you don't see the phone you want now, they should be able to give you a discount down to £20 or less for up to 6 months. This discount will disappear once you upgrade.
ROMS do make a difference. Often the telephone companies will be slow to updated their ROMS or you may never get an update that is available for stock ROM options. IF the phone is fully unlocked by HTC then you will be able to remove the T-Mobile ROM and upgrade via this site in the future if you aver need to.
Hi Guy's And Girl's
I have been a regular forum ghost for about 4 years now, I own 3 HTC HD2's all with custom rom's ranging from WP7 to Android. Im currently looking at buying a new phone to play with and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to get next. Ideally im looking at HTC but i have been looking at the samsung galaxy.
Also I probably wont get n e thing till about april. Are there n e top spec smartphones being released in or around april that might b worth getting?
Galaxy Note or Galaxy S II (any modification, the highest-speced is Skyrocket HD, but release date is unknown).
Also you can wait for MWC (it's on 27feb-1mar). There'll be HTC quad-core phone(s) announced, e.g. HTC Edge.
Oh, and I forgot about Galaxy Nexus. It has ICS on the board which is good.
If you are willing to spend, and willing to import, the Samsung Galaxy SIII will be available sometime around there.
have you considered buying a Sensation? it is just as strong as the Galaxy II but after the release of the XL and XE versions it is dirtcheap.
Hey all, Thank you for your speedy reply's.
I was looking at the new htc sensation but the galaxy s2 has always come out on top on side by side reviews with the sensation. Plus I really like the display on the galaxy s2 nice and clear even in direct sunlight. god theres so many choices and not enough money lol. Im gonna take a look at the other phones suggested. i might even hold of 4 a bit till sumthing extra special is released.
Edit :- The spec for the new galaxy s3 and htc edge sound amazing. i do like ics on my hd2 so its gotta be even better on new devices. iv got the wants now lol
I too was considering getting the Samsung GS2, but I'm currently at an unpleasant decision point about giving up my "smartphone exclusion" and "data opt-out" features tied to my WM6.1 LG Incite. The on-screen buttons are really small and resistive screen is so insensitive that it's barely usable. I'm ready to move on, but getting stuck for a worthless 200MB data plan or a grossly overcharged 2GB plan doesn't do it for me.
I was considering getting an international i9100 version and flashing its IMEI to my current IMEI, but there's some potential contractual problems there. Does anyone have a more legitimate way to maintain my current pricing plan or if it must increase to get something of value (e.g. data and texts for the same price)?
Thank you for your patience with
<--this n00b.
Well if ur UK based most networks offer free addons to pay monthly customers, for example, T-Mobile offer smartphone users a free unlimited data plan with the exception of a fair use policy. And iv never had a slapped wrist from them and my data's never been turned off. O2 have a similar plan but I'm not too sure about vodafone or orange. Hope this helps.

I'm on AT&T in the US and they're pretty finicky when it comes to their smartphones. They claim all of these hard rules, but I had an agent the other night looking for justification so she could put the exclusion and opt-out back on the line as the previous two agents suggested that I could do after getting the GS2. They *can* do it, but it seems like they're either not supposed to or only under special circumstances. I asked if I could pick out an unlocked phone and maintain my contract that way and they said that doing so was unnecessary and that I could just get a subsidized phone and maintain my contract through premier customer care. After getting the 2nd rep's email address and then emailing her...a week later she still hasn't called me. I'm beginning to think that she might have been full of hot air. I'm concerned that I'm going to have to keep on having this crappy phone with it's poor reception because I'm a student, my parents are on a fixed income, and we can't afford to make the monthly bill go up $25/mo.

O2 data is not available free its a £6 add on and you only get 500 megabytes. Never known anyone get free bolt on off them and been with them years so not all carriers give bolt ons away. But giffgaff offer true unlimited data though I'm on contract with o2 so can't use them.

When I was working for Verizon last year there was talk of congress possibly cracking down on phone contracts and forcing service providers to get rid of them.
Now, that would make it impossible to get high end devices at subsidized rates.
The only alternative (i can think of) would be either ads inherint on the phone, like what KDDI is doing with the ads in the dropdown status bar, or company branded phones, like an HTC Pepsi Evo or a Samsung Ford Motors Galaxy.
Of course the phone's casing would sport the company logos, and such, and rooting would probably be much more difficult seeing as these major corporations have a big vested interest in making sure people see their stuff.
So, would an outside company's branding piss you off?

If that happened I'd go back to dumb-phones and forget all about smartphones. That's far too intrusive for my liking. (Incidentally, I see 0% chance of this happening.)
I don't think there is a reason for carriers to have ad-supported devices since consumers are still purchasing devices that are $199 and $299 with a 2-year contract. I don't know 100% what the numbers are but considering the rapid growth of a smartphone adoption, the carriers won't employ ad-supported devices so they can capitalize on a profit. Now in 10-years when carriers are looking for ways to further differentiate themselves from competitors, I could see the smaller guys offering ad-supported devices to try to get a leg up on the competition with a larger customer base (i.e. A T-Mobile or Sprint offering free devices to compete with Verizon because they can't compete on tower spectrum or device selection).

Here in Canada, we now get rid of those contract for telecom. Now the contract only apply to the price of the phone. So if you bought a phone that worth 300$ but the operator give it to you for 0$ with a contract of 3 years, if you break the contract after only 1 year, you would have to pay 2/3 of the phone, 200$.
As simple as that.
That is a simple solution. Makes a lot of sense

I don't care about a contract but the way phones are getting EOL'ed so quickly and new stuff is flying around, contracts need to be dropped down to 1 year.
if they were required to eliminate contracts i would expect ad's in phones to become the norm in order to help subsidize the price of the phone will still attracting consumers.

You can still get 1yr contracts, but pay a little more for your phone. One of the reasons I switched to T-mo years ago was that their offerings were just as good with only 1 yr contracts vs the rest having 2 yrs. Most of the time now if I get a new to me phone is it used, or at least previous gen to offset the cost. Nice being to upgrade on occasion tho.

I don't mean 1 year contracts as an option and your phone is pricier, I mean 1 year is standard, and 2 year is the extended option.
The phones retail or discounted is still more than it costs to make them.

If the federal government mandated that a private corporation not be allowed to offer contractual subsidized phones there would be a libertarian uprising. Give them an inch and they take a mile. They have no business mandating a thing.

Yeah i think the Ads would be a horrible idea, just another thing to bog down the phone and waste user data, and the government should stay out of the tech market anyway before they screw it up like everything else they touch and control
Can't see this happening. There's no way the ads could generate enough income to justify a £500 phone for every customer? Thought I could definitely live with it if it saved me a few hundred!
I hate Ads...thats why I use the AdAway app! Don't see the contracts going away...
I don't see it happening either, mostly because ad generated revenue would never be as consistent as X number of monthly plans at $Y. Big corporations like being able to predict their future revenue, especially if that's what they're used to.

This would also lead to more encrypted bootloaders. If the only way carriers could make money from the phone itself was to advertise, then they would take measures to insure you couldn't just load a new clean rom on the phone. So as a result of ads in phones, I think we would lose custom roms also. Not exactly the ideal scenario.
i want to try that, let see what will happen
