so I made my own...
My 1990 Jetta finally has navigation!
***REQUESTED HOW-TO***
First I make a car-specific mounting bracket (sorry, neglected to take many pics of this process):
Then I make the phone specific cradle:
Very cool man... what wallpaper is that?
Nice mod man. How did you make it? Can you post a little tutorial and can you make it rotate 90 degrees?

It is the Earth Live Wallpaper found on the market or at this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623654 He just set the globe size pretty high so it zooms in I think.
Actually, the background was the World Tour app, but the one you guys mentioned is even cooler; just added it.
Sure, I can post up some of the "in process" pics for ya.
It doesn't rotate right now, as I never felt a reason for that, but if I were to source a hinge that rotates 90 degrees, it would. Thinking of that, I had a phone holster a few years ago that did that...
I'll post up those pics here in a few...
Velcro just in case eh? I really need to make one of these.
Dual lock.
Nice job! Looks like that will do the car dock nicely
Car dock spotted in this video at 1:10. http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2010/02/10/google-nexus-one-car-kit-on-show/

You made me think of making my own.
Simple enough.
But what did you use for the backing? Is that aluminum? Cause it looks like you bent it fairly easy with the pliers.

Both the mounting bracket, and the phone cradle are made out of sheet aluminum; the mounting bracket is approximately 2mm thick, while the phone cradle is approximately 1mm thick.
The aluminum is strong enough to retain its shape, but flexible enough to allow the phone to slip in and out of the cradle and hold it there for years - I've used this method for five years now.
You add an external speaker and charging capabilities and you get the money I was going to give Google.
Really though... good job, very clever. I do wish that Google would hurry with theirs....
This is the one I'm using: Bracketron PHV-200-BL
http://www.amazon.com/Bracketron-PH...e-Holder/dp/B0014S5FVQ/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_1
Target has this one for $19.99. When I bought it from Amazon a month ago it was $12. It's $13.88 now. So far, it works really well and I'm really happy with it....until the official dock comes along. It's made mostly for regular GPS's but works with the Nexus One just fine without an issue.
EDIT: Just saw they have the PHV-202-BL for $5.73 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B2PPYC/ref=oss_product
This is hardcore.

Bluetooth is my external speaker, and the car charger provides my charging capabilities. You'll notice in the initial design pics, I blocked off the areas surrounding the phone that would cover a control button, or socket. I do that so I can still use the phone when it's in the cradle.
Thanks for the compliments.

Looks good...Is it very secure with air-vent mount? and whats the difference between the 200 vs the 202?
This is exactly what I had invisioned in my head what I would make if I did it myself. Very nice man. Where did you buy the metal at? Think menards, or home depot carries it?

I bought it at an industrial metal supply shop (they sell to the public also) for around 8 bucks for a sheet (approx. 4'X5').
I've never seen it at Home Depot. Never been to a Menards, sorry.

I had one that looks identical to this.
It worked great for about 25 minutes...
The little gears that allow you to move the arms in and out (to grip the phone, and at least in the version I had) are terribly cheap and broke off with very normal use on the very first day. Now it's completely useless as there is no tension from the arms to actually hold something in place.
YMMV, tho.
That thing just looks atrocious! For such a slick device I would never use such a monster of a mount... it would consume the whole phone... and how do you charge?!

I came from the iPhone 3GS and had a Griffin Window Seat for it. It works nicely with the N1...even with the case on it.

Is it a wrap around removable case or just a clear adhesive shield on the phone?
I currently have the Vroom case from Case-mate, and it would not fit into the iPhone 3GS holder for this mount correctly. I also tried it without the case and it would not stay secured. Earlier today I ordered a Gelli case from Case-mate which is said to have a little more of a snug fit, and I am wondering if this one may fit better. I am hoping it will give it just the little bit more to keep it inside the holder.
I know, the damn things not even out yet, but I figured I'd get the ball rolling in this section.
Coming from an EVO, I have to say that one of the things I'll miss most when I get the Epic is the kickstand. Has anyone seen cases with kickstands built in? Obviously not for the Epic yet, but for any phone? Do quality kickstand cases even exist? I've seen one or two on google, but they looked like crap. What do you think the odds are that there will be a kickstand case out for the Epic, considering it's being marketed as a multimedia powerhouse?
I've seen a pretty good looking case for the iPhone that had a built in kickstand, and some for the iPad, so I think that they'll make a kickstand case for the epic soon after it comes out.
BodyGlove made one for the Hero.
I made one my self for the hero out of a cheap-o snap on case I got of Amazon for 89 cents. Cut out a section of the back and hinged it with a piece of a paper clip...it was "Epic"

HAHA Nope, completely forgot about it.
I'll go home tonight and at least snap a few pictures of it. It works pretty well, except the kickstand sometimes pops out when you try and pull it out of your pocket and gets hung.
Usually 3rd party case makers will release something like this, I know the orginal Droid had a case made with a kickstand long before the Evo.

Yea, I'm looking for something portable.
I did some research on tripods. They're more portable, cheaper, and can elevate the camera to eye level (as well as being posable).

And untill one comes out, you can always make one yourself. You just need some cardboard like packaging of coockies or something, a knife, some tape and some folding skills...
and that one, you can even put in your wallet
it doesn't always have to cost a lot of money, and having a seperate kickstand (wether it's cardboard or plastic) gives you a lot of more options to choose from when looking for a pouch or case (where the kickstand is no longer a criteria)

That's actually one of the benefits of having all the pieces separate, the piece that would cover the metal strip is separate. I agree with you, but I plan to keep the metal strip shown, even if I have to use an exacto knife to make it happen.

I hand cut out all of the ports, being very careful not to scratch or damage the Touchpad. Looks nice eh?

lol ive seen that drawer liner pattern before excellent use of an abstract resource!
i also like the great job you did on the corners, looks really smooth
Don't worry boys, I did my fiance's TP in a wood Vinyl. You can get this stuff at the Dollar store and I find it does a better job than most of the other commercial options. The Vinyl is many times marked as 3M. Guys, we are royally getting ripped when it comes to the Vinyl (unless its Di-Noc).

Have utilized this site before when working on my kitchen (lots of contact paper ).
Has a ton of different kinds too. Chalkboard, Wood, etc. Could be neat to see what flourishes.

I really like the Stainless steel look, but might that affect WiFi signal, Bluetooth or the touchstone charging?
Not much for that design, but love the idea!

yes most likely if it made out of some type of metal. the charging dock uses a electromagnetic field to charge. on that note you do not want to put anything metal inbetween your touchpad and touchstone it will get really hot and cause problems
Any touchpad cut template you figured out?
Sorry for the Delay in getting back to you all.
I JUST GOT ENGAGED!!!!!!!!! and it was my birthday yesterday.
Anyways, I am working on a pattern for people to DIY it easier. I will try to verctorize it in inkscape so those with laser cutters (evil grin) can get perfect results. The pattern wouldn't take longer than a couple of minutes on a laser cutter tops.
Congrats on the engagement. Used to have access to all kinds of cool cut machines at a previous employer. At least I still have plenty of xacto and mat blades. Picked up a roll of the woodgrain. Figured, "why not?" Uninterested in the $30 skins, even if they look a bit cooler.

Congratulations on both counts!!!
Just tried what the OP suggested. But I went with a clear/mat finish contact paper. None of the patterns work for me so went for clear came out nice will post pics tomorrow. I took me less then 3 mins complete the task (stuck it on used black marker to mark where to cut, then lift edges cut and stick back on and used a heat source near corners to smooth if out). I did not go all the way around to the front edge, instead trim it at the back side.
Next one I will remove old one and measure dimensions and make perfect template.
But very happy with results
