Installing programs on MicroSD - General Questions and Answers

I have a HTC Touch Dual, So I have very limited internal memory (~128mg). But I have a 4gb Class 6 MicroSD. So far I installed here all programs are not "always in use", like Explorer, Tweakers, Opera Mobile, among others.
But those that really needs memory are programs like SPB Mobile Shell and themes, SPB Time, Inesoft Dialer (...)
So far I installed those on internal memory to avoid problems but then I tried install them on Micro SD but looks like always use internal memory anyway (cant understand why). So now I'm thinking using the SKTools move folder and content (and update registry) of those programs.
Should I get any problems ?

yea, some should be a problem as there paths must be hard coded..instead of moving using STK, try editing the cab files and channging there default installation path

But if some paths are hard coded, when I install programs in English dont work, because my ROM is portuguese: so Program Files is Programas.

Where to install software in WM5 PPC?
Which way can makes the WM5 PPC runs smoother? Install program in Built-in storage? Or in SD card?
if it's himalaya or blue angel i'd say on the ram disk
otherwise i'd say storage
sd would prob be the slowest place

A connected query pl. Can I make RAMDisk as my default installation location? I mean that when we load any prog on WM5 PPC(XDA-2) it asks us the option main memory/RAMDisk/Card storage . I want that that istead of asking this option every time I load a prog it should load that on RAMDisk by default without asking for option. Is it possible???? :?: :?:

I am using XDA Neo. So which way is the best?
c_shekhar: This can be solved by removing "InstallPath" string from the cab. Just edit the inf file.
isomaniac: It all depends on what program you're installing. Any program that runs on startup must be in main memory as well as any app you will use with content from different cards (like MP3's).
Everything else can go on the SD. With most apps and good cards the delay in loading is insignificant. Keep in mind that after ext ROM installation you have about 30MB free on the device and you can't move things like contacts and emails to the SD.
Also, rings should be in main memory so they will load after standby.

Do you mean that I have to edit all the cab files I am to install on the device??(I install approx 40-50 cabs on the device). I think there should be a betted and more scientific method for this like tweaking the registry of the device or replacing the loading program etc.....
Any body to comment :? :?
Since JUN 2005 no solution to this problem of installing the cab on RAMDisk by default????

Install TomTom 6 on Storage card as much as possible

Even if you said to TomTom 6 to be installed on the Storage Card, it will install itself on the MAIN memory !
Has someone managed to move the 2 biggest files:
- Tomtom navigator.exe (~2MB)
- data.chk (~2MB)
to the storage card to save (4MB here!!) the precious main memory ?
I have found nothing except this but it is for TomTom 5:
http://www.4winmobile.com/q-how-can...934.html?sid=494a2df12b48a1e8fdca8ae0e7bfb752
Yes, I moved the whole Tom Tom directory that is installed to the Main Memory, to the Storage Card and run the Navigator exe from there.
Another thing is if you do a Hard Reset you dont after reinstall it again, it will run directly from the Storage Card, you just have to create a shortcut.
The difficulty with copying everything across to the SD card is that TomTom Home then can't find the installation on the pocket PC. Have you found any way around this?

Yes, what are the consequences of moving the folder to the storage card ?

Well, the only problem is that it is a little slower to startup and get going, but once thats done Ive never noticed any difference.
The only thing is you cannot use the Today plugin (but I never did anyway), I just created a new shortcut in the Start Menu, that does it for me.
I agree with coercri (although I don't find it is any slower to start from my SD card, probably because I stuck in a relatively fast card ). But that still doesn't get around the problem of not being able to update the POIs using TomTom Home (which is much more convenient than copying the individual files to a number of map sub-directories). Maybe the answer is a Registry hack to point the installation directory to the card. I will try it.
I don't use the Home application so this is why it has never bothered me, I donwload the Camera Updates and just copy them to the GBMAP directory.
Thanks for you advice. I moved my TomTom folder in Program Files from main memory to the SD card. It works great !
The speed is the same as on the main memory and the application load is as fast as on the main memory. Maybe this is due to the fact that I took a fast SD card.
I am not using TomTom Home so I don't have this problem. I suggest you use Resco Explorer Registry editing tool and make a search for '\Program Files\Navigator' you should find so occurrences, change them to '\<name of your storage card>\Program Files\Navigator'
Thanks for that. In the end, I simply went back to copying the OV2 files across.
Incidentally, I have now moved TomTom to the Extended ROM and it is faster than running from the SD Card.

Relocating Pocket IE to external card?

I have an Axim X50v running the latest MagLite WM6 ROM. It's awesome, but it was running a bit slow, so I decided to try removing all my apps (saved to internal memory) and reinstalling them to my 16GB CF card. This has led to a vast and very noticeable performance improvement. However, if I open Pocket IE (again located on the device memory) it slows back to a crawl.
Is there a way to move Pocket IE to an external card so it won't have to mess up internal memory so much (also, caching pages to folders on CF cards instead of device memory). I found a guide that changed the cache path in WM2003 but the registry entry in question doesn't exist on WM6.

read my Web Browsing bible; in there, I've elaborated on this. Ina nutshell: use SKTools, MemMaid or similar apps to do the auto-relocation.
I used a registry editor to relocate the cache to:
/CF Card/Temporary Internet Files
However, it works great until you do a reset. Then, it makes a folder called "CF Card" in main memory (puts content in there) and then the actual card comes up as "CF Card2" and all the paths to apps on the CF card get messed up.
Is there anyway to just disable the cache altogether? I'm on WiFi so I'm not concerned with minimizing data transfer, just minimizing memory use. I don't browse offline either, no point to have old copies of useless pages saved to your device when navigation is broken in them.
Some advice for you, I would suggest not moving the temp files to your SD card. PIE does not do well at all when you do this. Every device I've done this on with either Scchap's Adv Config or MemMaid, it would just freeze PIE.

Agreed, there will surely be at least a performance hit, even with the fastest cards - let alone the crashes. (See my Web browser bible's benchmarks)

[APP] Java Emulator in SD Card

For those who want to save main memory, I built this .CAB file exactly alike the Esmertec Java emulator one installed by default in the main memory but working from an external memory card (with its storage folder appdb for games and applications also in the external memory)
HTML:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1MVEH2J9
NOTE: Basically I worked on files, folders of my own device and registry keys from this great thread
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407667
and I've built a .CAB with all that. To avoid mistakes with the orginal one, I created a shortcut called "Java SD.lnk" in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
I checked that it worked in some waiting rooms, waiting for the bus, subways, ...
could u upload it here?
no external site such rapid/mega
thx.

[Q] Identify where programs installed to (i.e Main Storage or Storage Card)

Hi all,
sorry if this has been posted already. looked around on google etc but to no avail.
i seem to be always running low on Storage space for installed programs on the internal memory. plenty left on storage card which is fine for installing games and other apps.
however for screen mods and themes etc i.e BSB tweaks, CHT etc. I always install on the phone memory, which is now running very low.
ive tried removing all cabs no longer in use or used rarley and still have little memory, plenty of spare memory under program but not in storage (on main memory)
so im looking for an alternative to the standard 'remove programs' function which will identify what cabs are installed to the internal memory and what is installed to memory card.
or alternativly a way or transfering some of the internal program storage over to the main storage.
this will save me having to do a hard re set to restore all storage space and re install cabs again etc.
im running standard WWE 1.48.405.2 Vodafone ROM, Radio 2.05.51.05_2 on WM6.5, HD2, any help is much appreciated, thanks, Batez
use pocket mechanic to transfer applications (which phone mechanic is able to transfer) from main memory to the storage card. This app is not free though but works a treat. Not sure if there are any free apps out there which can do something similar.
Thanks Mate
