If I perform a hard reset, what do I loose? what do I keeep? IE I am aware I will loose all the data i hav DLed on it but do I have to reprogram the phone and all?
Here's your answer, copied directly from the TP2 user's manual:
Performing a hard reset
If a normal reset does not solve a system problem, you can perform a hard (full) reset. After a hard reset, the device is restored to its default settings—the way it was when you first purchased it and turned it on. You
will lose any programs you installed, data you entered, and settings you customized on your device, and only Windows Mobile® software and other pre-installed programs will remain.
Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings. Make sure that any additional installed programs and/or user data have been backed up before you perform a hard reset.
Important If Encrypt files when placed on a storage card is enabled, backup all files from the storage card before using Clear Storage, hard reset, or updating the operating system. Otherwise you will no longer be able to
access the encrypted files on the storage card. Use ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center to transfer files between your storage card and computer. After the procedure, copy your files back to the storage card.
Thank you for the reply. I have read that (in fact it was the first thing I read, and I as said I understand I will loose my files and what not) and it doesn't answer my question about programing on the verizon network. The reason why I asked is because the programing was a difficult process for several reasons that I wont get into.
Sorry, I wasn't (and still am not) clear about what you mean by "reprogramming". The hard reset leaves you with a phone that is the same as it was when you first opened the box EXCEPT that you do not need to initiate phone service. There are no contacts, no emails, no preference settings, but you can immediately make and receive phone calls. There are some free cabs that you can use to backup much of your data before doing the hard reset. This will reduce some of the pain of losing so much of what you put into the phone before doing the hard reset.
Thanks that does answer my question. When you get a phone you have to go through verizon programming dial *228 before using it. If you dont think i need to do this, then i should be al set
On a hard reset, you will need to dial *228 to activate the phone.

Hi
Can someone please give me a step by step idiots guide for getting rid of all the [email protected] that orange put on the m500, thus making the phone run quicker?
I haven't got an SD card reader, is that a problem??
Cheers.
If you just want to get rid of the pre-installed software, you can do so quite easily: Just do a hard reset (hold down power button while pressing reset). Then, after you have finished the touchscreen calibrating stuff etc., there will be a popup saying the device will be configured automatically in 3 seconds. Now, do a soft reset at exactly this point and nothing will be installed. The ExtROM is still there, you can look at it with the file manager and manually install any of the programs you want.
If you want to completely remove the ExtROM, thus increasing the size of the Storage folder, then you need to do the BigStorage hack. It's not too hard, there are many good step-by-step guides available. A very good one written by HBK can be found here. You will definitely need an SD card reader though.
If I do the reset, will I lose everything else that i've got stored??

Yes, with a hard reset, RAM is cleared and you will lose all data. Unfortunately, that's the only way to get rid of the pre-installed programs, as you can't uninstall them the normal way. Your calendar, todos, etc. won't be lost if you sync it to your PC first, but any settings you made or 3rd party programs you installed will.
May be a stupid question, but because of my GPS lag, I'd like to try and do a hard reset of my device (risking that my extremely fast fix (<10 sec) is gone).
But now I'm hesitating because of the following:
Does a hard reset also change the registry back to the stock version?
Further I assume that:
- My storage card remains intact (all files stay there) and
- if I make a back up all my contacts, e-mail settings, Opera favorites etc etc etc will be saved and I can restore them (from the storage card)
- all my personal installed programs are restored from a back up
- registry will not be restored from the back up
Hard reset takes the device back to factory settings, compketeky wiping it out. Your storage card will be fine. Backing up your PIM info is no problem and restoring that should have no effect on how your device operates. If you make a backup of your entire device and then restore it, you will most likely still be having whatever problems you had before as it does restore everything under normal circumstances, even the registry.
If you're having issues, the best thing to do is backup PIM info only and just reinstall everything after the hard reset. Plus, if you put a new rom on your phone, that's the safest method anyway.
Hey
I've got this ASUS smartphone I'm giving away (its got a cracked screen) - and because its ASUS I cant flash it.
Is there a way to wipe the Messages, Contacts and email settings through activesync, I can see program files windows dirs etc...?
Thanksn
you can hard reset it. just search for the combination of how to hard reset your asus and you'll be ok.
The only way for this phone is through the phone interface of which I cannot access (http://www.hardreset.eu/asus_p750_hard_reset_soft_reset_en.html)
Doesn't make sense. there's always a way to hard reset using the Hardware buttons only since a Hardreset is supposed to solve the issue of having problems using your touchscreen or the Interface in general. find it .. and you're ok
Are you saying theres nothing I can do with remote filesystem access through activesync.
if you go to active sync and uncheck the sync options for contacts, callender and emails, doesnt this wipe them off the device?
The other option in to rename the pim file on the device to something else, soft reset, then you can delete the pim file. worked for me when i lent out my prophet to a mate for a while (although i didnt delete the file, just hid it out of prying eyes
yup, these are good options as well.
when you sync with nothing it erases everything. messages and call history won't be wiped.. for messages you can rename cemail.vol and pim.vol and then delete them.
tho if your screen is cracked.. i see no reason why not to save yourself the trouble and just hard reset
yh thats true
there should be a way to hard reset using clear storage in software, unless the screen is dead dead and cant be used... (or is that just wm6? its been a while since i used wm5 lol)
you can hard reset using software in WM5 to my knowledge.. but he can't since his screen can't be used (as far as i understand).
if he can still sync, might be able to use my mobiler to access the functions on the device whilst synced via the computer, goto clear stoarge and activate it... should work... long winded yes lol, but short of knowing how to hardware reset i dont know.
I read somewhere that Android keeps your personal data even after hard resetting the phone as it only delete the path of files nd original files are remain untouched. I just want to know if it is true or not..
Sent from my A110Q using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Isn't that true for just about every storage device? I think the issue is when you erase the storage media, traces of the files can be recovered from the storage. This is true for your phone and also your personal computer. If you formatted your hard drive, someone could still use a data recovery to recover your data. Short of totally destroying your physical media, there may be no 100% way of erasing all data. The realistic goal would be erasing the data to the point where an average person can't recover it.
Based on what I read from the article, the issue is that if you erase your phone, the data can still be recovered from the phone using off-the shelve tool. Apple is a bit better since later generation of iphone handles encryption better. If you want to avoid this situation, look into an android phone with encryption features.

Check the settings, you might have the option to encrypt your data in there. Takes around an hour if your device is fairly new.

Good way of making sure your 'deleted' files, if they're still there, are inacessable.
But can make backup and recovery a real *****....

Yes some of the data can be recovered but that is only as long as it has not been over written. The easiest thing to do is to wipe the device and use a Stock rom flash file to over write the system a few times formatting all partitions.
After hard-reset, data will be erased from device.
But, if your data was synchronized with Google cloud services, they will remain alive after Android hard-reset.
All user data have been lost after hard reset
I imagine that after a factory reset, all information stored on the device previously will be erased, however, i believe that information synced with email accounts or applications will be saved
A factory reset is theoretically the best way to clear data and should work for most phones, see Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. However, a company called Avast Software did a study recently and found they were able to recover photos from 20 handsets bought on Ebay. They say the owners did a factory reset but I'm a bit skeptical that maybe they claimed to but didn't.

i think the same thingh.
google keeps all of our information in its database... we are not its user but just product...
As zelendel said, data can be recovered after a factory reset. Have a look at this thread 'Deleting data' part.
Hi all, my mom has an Motorola Moto G3 phone. Have noticed many weird things happening on the phone since yesterday.
The notification panel won't slide down. Also, no notifications are displayed in the notification bar, even when there are notifications, like receiving sms or messages on Whatsapp.
The phone has a swipe lock screen. But, the lock screen won't work, even though it shows in Security settings, that there is one.
Calls are being made from the phone, but no calls are being received. For example, if I call the phone, it says that the person is busy and the connection ends. My brother had also tried calling... same thing.
No apps can be downloaded or updated from the Play Store.
I tried to connect the phone to the PC, but, since I cannot slide down the notification panel, there is no way to change the connection mode to transfer data.
I should mention that the storage on the phone was getting close to being filled, and the phone was showing the warning that storage was less and that some of the functions might stop working. So, are these things because of that?
But, I did delete a lot of photos and videos and uninstalled apps, and now there is sufficient storage for the phone to run properly, but it still doesnt work, and these weird stuff are happening.
I suspect from the weird behavior that there might be a virus. Is that so?
What do I do? How will the phone return to sanity? How do I backup the data... if the solution is to factory reset the phone. There are important photos and videos and whatsapp data which I would like to save before performing a reset.
Any help will be appreciated.
A lot to cover there.
First Long press the power button whilst the phone is on.This will reboot to Safemode.See if you can now use a USB Data cable to backup what you need to your PC/Laptop/Tablet.
Note:Some USB cables are,"Charge Only" so check the USB cable is Data transfer capable.
Then if you have a Google account and are connected via Phone data or WiFi go Settings/Accounts/Google and untick and re-tick all sync options to make sure all your Google stuff is updated.
Then do a,"Hard Reset/Factory Restore.
Just put Moto G3 into youtube with the words Hard Reset,
https://www.youtube.com
Although a Hard reset seems like a big move I do one at least a couple of times a year as a kind of 10,000 mile service for my Android phones even if they are running well and it clears out all the junk I tend to accumulate and keeps them slick, fast and problem free.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Your post comes as a lifesaver.
I took a backup of the data by transferring stuff on to the SD card and then transferring the data from there to the computer.
I had booted in safe mode, but there too the phone showed same behavior. I also noticed that the home button, or the task manager button were not working too.
After taking the backup, I also changed the password for the Gmail account for security, in case the mobile was somehow compromised.
Then I wanted to do a factory reset, but the button seems to be greyed out, and there seems to be no way to perform a soft factory reset. So, your post comes at the nick of time to save me, as I was thinking what to do now. Thanks a ton!
Performed a hard reset of the phone, and the phone is working fine now. Everything is normal.
What might be the reason for such behavior though?
Not being able to lock the phone, install/update apps, factory reset... all this makes me think if it was some kind of malware.
Another reason I can think of is that the storage got full, and so these strange stuff started, but it should go back to normal when stuff was deleted and sufficient storage became available. Still, doesnt explain why lock wouldn't remain.... and other stuff. Really weird.
Modern,"Smart Phones" are very complex computers. With so many apps on them that get updated some updates don't always play nice and mess up the phones. You could spend hours tracking down a single app that might be a cause of a problem.
As you say as well the the storage on the phones might well have got clogged up with old Temporary data that has not been cleared out as it should.
For future reference another trick is to wipe the Cache partition from Recovery mode.I would have suggested this first but as you said space was running out it's best to have a clean start
Yes, it was good to have a clean start with the phone.
Thank you for that trick to wipe the cache partition from Recovery mode. Will keep that in mind.
Thanks a lot again.
