This is available for the G1 and i think it might also work the Magic. It's got a lot of features such as partition sd and format ext 2/3 and so much more.
I managed to download it however i am having some trouble installing it. It has to be done through terminal emulator and the Magic doesn't have
a physical keyboard and the onscreen keyboard doesn't even pop up. Any help on how to install this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks !
Amon Ra's (New) Custom Recovery v1.2.2
To Install:
Copy it to your sdcard and open the Terminal Emulator app then type in this code:
su
(if a message pops up click always allow)

they have several terminal emulators that have the onscreen keyboard built in... orrrrrrrrrr u can always press and hold the menu key when ur in the program to have it open
go to the market and just type in terminal it will pop up with many diff ones that support the magic
I am sure he is quite capable of posting his own threads in this, or any other section, such as he did here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
the 1.2.2 update works fine on the MT3G, running it right now
I think this is a disgrace remove this thread i think amon is quite capable of posting his own work like he always does rather than getting in the lime light
Just to stay on topic, Amon_RA has posted personally in the Dream thread that this should work in a MT3G.

but for the magic you obviously need an on screen keyboard- you cannot access the onscreen keyboard, nor terminal from recovery. this is how they differ- and this is why Amon_RA has made dedicated Magic recoveries that you can use adb commands while in recovery.
I am sure he will release a magic version of 1.2.2 once he finishes up his 1.6 ion rom which he must be working on (I hope)....

Don't listen to the person who posted this thread.. instead, read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492 there Amonr_RA explains how to test his recovery first before flashing.

I installed the latest recovery img on my Magic (32B) and I can use ADB commands just fine in recovery mode. I didnt know you couldnt at any point not use them.
What would rock is an onscreen keyboard in console... now that would be amazing to finally detether my rom flashing from the comp.

It works on the MyTouch 3G, trust me.
There's your proof. Enjoy.

Yeah, it's not 32a compatible...
(Nothing for the dream/32b is without tweaking it..)
I didn't post anything here yet because I plan to update the 32A and 32B ones soon.
OP - reboot your phone into SPL mode, then fastboot flash recovery recovery.img(whatever the name of the file is)
Alright I really want to use this recovery but right now im using cyanogen 1.4 + JF recovery..how do i go about switching? sorry to thread jack.

is it even possible to get a virtual keyboard to work in console? through recovery?? please say yes, and that youve made this magical feature part of the update
Sorry to ad to this idiotic thread. All you have to do to use vk in terminal is hold menu button down. Numbers will not work in terminal so download a terminal that does or just rename file so it has no numbers in it. Its not rocket science you newbs make stuff so hard n complicated.
Wait for Update Guys

Okay i'll wait on that one, i know some people have already tried it on the magic
but i don't wanna screw up my phone trying to flash this one. I'll stick with v.1.2
for now. Thanks Amon_RA
I came from WinMo phone which I used to flash all the time with different ROMS. Now I have this Android and am not sure what to do with it, I love the phone, have had it for about 3 months now, but I know it can do bigger and better things. So is rooting the same thing as unlocking? When I used to flash my WinMo phone I would drop the ROM into the little software flash package I kept on my hard drive and change it out. Is there such a thing for Android. I really like this phone and don't want to screw it up assuming I know what I'm doing because I did it on my other phone, I want to edumacate myself like I did before I started flashing my other. Does anyone have reliable good information links they can point me to within this forum that will help me feel good about flashing this phone too? I know I've read that just rooting the phone makes it run faster without flashing a ROM....true? Thanks for your help, suggestions, etc. All is appreciated.

Wow... Amazing that you could put in the effort required to post all of this, but couldn't read through the Wiki posts and general information stickies at the top of this Forum.
Please do some more reading.
One hint... Your MyTouch 3G is a 32B device.
I was really confused when I started customizing my girls mytouch...Ive been flashing WM phones for years even update my kitchen with newest releases etc. In fact I personally use a touch pro.
I have yet to really sit down and figure out how to make some android roms myself. Ive been loading up premade roms posted on here.
It was a bit confusing when finding out how to get a hero rom on her phone. With all the fat 32/ext2/3/4/linux swap etc.
What I did was followed the one click rooting thing that loads cyanogens recovery and rom. Then I took the amon_ra recovery which allows you to partition the sd card on the device since I didnt have an sd card reader on my laptop or linux. When you are loading the cyanogen recovery/rom you'll download an app from market called recovery flasher or something like that. In the first step you'll be asked to backup the cyanogen recovery which makes a file on the sd card. Take the amon_ra recovery file and rename it the same as the backup file on the sd card. Overwrite the file on the sd card. Rerun the recovery flasher app and click restore from backup..Follow the instructions and you'll have the Amon_ra recovery.
Boot into the recovery screen (hold home and power until it boots up) partition the sd card. I have my girls 1gb set at 256mb ext4 partition, 64mb linux swap, and the rest as Fat32.
Then load up a rom make sure its intended for 32b.
I by no means am an expert in this so take what I said with a grain of salt. I wrote that from memory. Just trying to help someone out the was just like me a month ago. Really confused.
Hope that helps.
PS. Took me a while to find out but despite this being the forum that seems would be for the mytouch I actually find more roms for 32b in the G1 forum.
You can check out the wiki page on cyanogen's website:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page
that was enough information for me to get started. Note that I haven't partitioned my sd card.
maybe u can try this tutorial .. it's one of the simplest direct methods to flash ur phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579328
p.s. : expect things to be more complex here it's just linux way of doing things
I used the guide at the cyanogen wiki and it works marvelously. I do reccomend using Amon_RA's recovery image instead of the Cyanogen one used in the guide(not to be confused with Cyanogen's ROM. Absolutely use the ROM, but when you get to the Recovery Image part, install Amon_RA's and follow the same steps, making sure to adjust command lines to reflect this different recovery image).
It just offers more functionality that I'm sure you'll find useful for later, such as backing up, partitioning, converting ext partitions and so forth. You'll learn about that stuff later.
Happy rooting, and best of luck to you my friend. As a fellow myTouch3G user, feel free to PM me with any questions. =)
I seem to be having tons of problems rooting my device.

u need to get Amon Recovery running on the phone before u can update to the 1.33.2010 ENG SPL. Theres afew diff ways of doing this.
(1)I did it by installing the android devvelopment kit (note u need to install java then update the kit), after setting it up then install windows usb drivers for Androidso that your computer detects the phone as an adb device (not a storage device) then using Dos CMD prompt type "fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img" while in fastboot mode (which u need to download). your phone will not have the amon recovery installed on the phone at this time but it will boot from your PC through to your phone. Kinda neat. use that recovery to flash the 2010 SPL. Once 2010 spl is flashed u r good as gold to flash any new custom recovery and or rom.
(2) If u don't understand all of this try relentless rooter which can be downloaded from XDA here
(3) youtube guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8BZYEBsSws
Try #3 to some point although u have to change few files because he has a 32B board and u have a 32A.
First decide on a method then ask afew more questions. Help will be just around the corner here
relentless rooter
When i first started using this program it gave me a lot of DOS file not found errors clicking on the buttons so then I took the entire tools folder and lumped it into the relentless rooter program which was calling for like c:/rooter and c:/rooter/root respectively.
I have usb drivers button fine, usb device shows device attached, root files pushes files over to my SDCARD, fastboot seems to be my problem i click it and it says "waiting for device" and just sits.. ugh.. help?
COuld you try and get a dump off the phone?
I was just on my way to the tmobile shop to get one of these and came here to see if people had problems. They are updating it to 2.1 in about may.... but Id like to know if its rootable before I go spend $200 for a pretty phone
Having the same problem here. Seems as though it says Invaild ID when trying to downgrade. ANy help witht his would b great. SO much new reading from the g1 to this.. I dont understand half of it.

We should stick together on this one since we are both having the same issue man! I also have the same problem! When I tried other SPL's to downgrade after no luck with one with a higher number than the one installed I get errors like "invalid id" etc...
I really feel as though all of these SPL's won't apply to us since we have 32A boards on "old radios" as I have read so far.
I am not even able to do the "one-click" root because I follow videos/tutorials to a T and mine always says "backup failed" and the top is always greyed out without me able to click it. Even if i touch to the right of the bottom button and get the top button to light up it still says backup failed or flash failed. It's not happening. I wish we had some attention on this.
I rooted the G1 EASILY i'm quite capable of doing this but im getting errors everywhere like a shot up R2D2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579328
Followed those instructions to a T and got "invalid model ID!" after trying to apply sappimg.nbh..
I had issues using the one touch root on my Rogers htc magic that i got about a month ago. It kept saying backup failed so i tried the older version of the one touch root software. It again said backup failed so i kinda poked around at my phone and and rebooted it then tried it again and it managed to backup everything. So i would keep poking with the one touch root and try one of the older versions.
You guys need to understand that this device is a 32A Magic.
The radio version can be 3.22 or 2.22, but it's still 32A.
You will need to goldcard this phone if you expect any results. If you are 100% sure that the goldcard method has failed, then you have to wait until the phone is rooted by other means.
(I have a 32A Magic that I have installed the Fender Edition 2.22 radio onto. I was able to flash the Fender Edition ROM with no issues. That leads me to believe that the Fender Edition MyTouch is the very first 32A Magic shipped with a 1.6 Donut OS)
I do not own a Fender MyTouch, so I am by no means an expert, but I want to help steer your discussions towards a proper solution for rooting the phone. (If anyone wants to send me a Fender MyTouch, go ahead )

I tried creating a goldcard, I have the 16gb sandisk, 4gb sandisk, and a 2gb kingston.
I tried all of the cards following these methods, but when I insert it into the phone it says "damaged sd card" I have to format and try again or what?
I used the kingston solely because a person had luck with it. I got my goldcard.img made 2 zeros in the CID, did offsets correctly pasted and saved. what am I doing wrong?
What I have been doing is using the mytouch, mounting the sd card, and doing it like that since I do not have an SDcard reader on my desktop computer, but i dont think that would mess anything up. get back to me, I want to try goldcard since you had luck with it and the fedner, please!

experience from the forum shows that most people go wrong on this step:
16) Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program
17) Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.
people seems to be selecting "Logical Disk" (i think thats the other option, please corect me if im wrong) instead of "Physical Disk", there for getting the "damaged sd card" error

Nope.. There is open.. Open Disk and open disk image. I was up till 3am trying each sd card over and over with same results. But now knowing that the SPL is hiher then the downgragables I belive we are just going to have to wait till these are out more. Unfourtunatly, it being a limited edition... we may be screwed lol. Ive got another pc and 2 last sd cards to try today. lol Ive even got a 32mb one... and if that one is the only one that takes the hex edit ill be so mad lol cause it wont fit the nbh file.
EDIT- IM SUCH A DUMBASS lol.. I see what you meant by logical and physical now. I had been clicking logical disk allllll night and always having to reformat the card. Then.. since it was so late when I was doing this, Ikept using the same goldcard.img for all the sd cards lol. So I tried again today, made the gol card correctly and it still was found by the PC... But it stlll gives device error as before. Ill go through getting the cid # from the other cards later when im bored.
My main problems with now not wanting to root this phone...
1. The music player will be gone.. it is nice.
2. 2.0/2.1 is supposed to be offcialy released for it within the next few weeks according to 2 of the Tmobile guys I alked to, one being the regional manager.
If anyone figures it out im all for trying to again.... But for now Ill learn to live with my vanilla dounut. Mmmmm Vanilla Doughnuts
lol
But I cant ever give up on anythign like this so I give it about 5min before im bored enough to start again.

Dude im dying every day staying up until 3am as well trying to pwn this phone. I go to bed sleep, wake up, and sign onto xda to see wtf is what. It's like another dude somewhere out there is having the SAME issues.
I work for t-mo as I said, I have not heard about any new OS plans for fender edition mytouch / mytouch 3g.
Im 100% positive that im creating goldcard correctly, I have 3 unique CID's that I reverse, replace with two zeros, use the correct image, open and uncheck read only on the removable disk, open goldcard, copy offset 00-0017 (however many zeros it said, copy paste save, close) plug back in, "you need to format this card" -windows "damaged sd card" -mytouch.

The press release from tmobile states that 2.1 will be coming to all devices that will support it. Meaning without root size wise, which Im thinking may toss the g1 out for 2.1, but maybe not 2.0. But I was specifly told also that 2.1 will be released for this mytouch, and it is also, obviously, the first to be released with 1.6 donut on it.
Also.. When you get the format disk error.. are you looking down the list on the **** drive to the bottom where it says Physical/removable? I found that the only time it gives me the format error is when I open it in hex where it says Logical rather then physical. If you go to the bottom and hit the physical one, and paste and save I can still open the sd card on the pc and phone.... BUT, it still will not downgrade.
EDIT- Since im still new to this.... Ive noticed that most rooting takes downgrading first. Now, does this mean that the ohones NAND's are set up like say the PSP where the IPL files can be changed to only allow certain firmware? Can it be that having the first phone with a base rom of 1.6 make it to where we cant go down past 1.6? Im still teetering on weather I should put it back in the box and use my G1 till the offcial 2.0/2.1 comes out or keep trying. But I woul dhate damaging it trying to get it to do something it cant.
Thanks to anyone else who gets one to test, I I had the money I would buy a dev one just for this purpose.

If you are referring to the Fender edition as "the first to be released with 1.6 donut on it" then you are incorrect.
I have a non fender edition that I purchased 2 weeks ago with donut 1.6, DCR92 build.
Apparently there are some rooting issues with DCR92/1.6donut/1.33.0007spl....from what I understand.

my SPL ends with 0013, not sure how much of a diffrence that makes. But I honestly thought i read in these forums that this was the first made with 1.6 and not updated to. but maybe I read wrong. All I know is that no trick works as of yet. Ill start again tonight when the kids go to sleep, but for it being a 32a board, I dont really see to many roms I wana try lol
So when you make the gold card does your phone read it or it stops before it loads the file from it? it sounds like the gold card is not created corectly...
The android version is irelevant so is the radio. to load anything, you need engeneering SPL. That will allow you to load any image,(radio,boot,recovery,system...) fastboot with full functionality.

it goes through most of the process of reading the sappimg file and once the prgress bar reaches the end and it goes through checking and all that it stops with the error. Also trying to get into fastboot it give the error that a perfected spl gives so done on both accounts. Ive now made what I think is a working goldcard but dont know if I want to proceed if im going to destroy it if I can get anything back on it.
also... I think im done with it for now till a smarted person gets this done. I really believe that this 1.6 version is a bit different then others, and also the spl seems to be a pain in the arse. I really cant afford a bricked phone, much less one I waited a very long time to get. I tried lol, but in the end my ADD defeated me.
I come in peace. Let me aplogize in advance... Hey, all. I know this may be the wrong section to post my request, but a wheel doesn't get oiled unless it squeaks... right? I was wondering if any of you devs out there currently working on 2.X roms, can include in your builds some sort of app(s) that find and display media stored on an user's sd card... I know some of you have included gallery.apk(s) for such a purpose, but they just don't seem to work for me. (Maybe, I'm doing something wrong...) I'm not sure which is the case. I have flashed nearly all of your 2.0 & 2.1 roms and have the same issue every time. The media on my sd card can't be found. Pictures or music. I've tried using Astro to move pics in the DCIM directory from one folder to the next, but to no avail. Apps and their respective widgets just sit on my screen blank. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Before the smart a** replies come in, let me say that I've searched the forum and checked the Q&A to see if anyone is experiencing the same thing. I respect everyone and appreciate everyone's feedback and input. XDA has singlehandedly transformed my G1 from a blank canvas into a work of art. One Love
Blank media problem
Can't say I've ever had that problem. Just what is your setup e.g., radio version, spl version, and what ROM is currently installed. I use Amon latest 1.52, the DangerSPL, the latest radio v2.22.19.26I, and Intension-v1.3.3. You must first flash the latest radio before you flash the DangerSPL. You may brick your phone when your don't install the radio v2.22.19.26I, first! Hence, it's called the DangerSPL. They are both found here: http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/. Also, with Amon's Recovery you can properly format your SD Card with Linux, ext 3 and swap. After which, 'repair the ext', a utility found in Format SD area.
These are prerequisites to successfully install most ROMs for the Dream.
Hopefully, this will resolve your problem. Cheers
Thanks for the info. I'm using the same setup as you: SPL, radio, Amon 1.5.2. Actually rooted G1 with the 1 Click method before it got pulled from the Market... Haven't had these media issues when flashing Cupcake and Donut. Not until Eclair. But I will try the repair ext suggestion. Once again, thanks mayne. I appreciate it.

when i re-flashed mine it found the media app that shows all my music/pic/video files.. but i still can't play videos since flashing to 2.1, we might be sol until a dev takes care of that issue. im starting to find other ways to entertain myself on my g1 but its a hard habit to kill in a single flash.
Someone has to be the d-bag that does it, I guess I will...
Wrong section, and your knowing it was the wrong section makes it even worse. You'll be happy to know that plenty of us parade about ALL sections of the Dream forum, myself included, and I would be much more willing to help if this were in the right section.

as would I.. wrong section = i could care less about your problem
I have this happen to me, what you need to do is copy all the files from your sdcard onto your computer, format the card, then copy them back to your sdcard. It is painful and time consuming, but it is the only way i could get to work.
i am using NfiniteFx45 stock ROM De-odexed (Hero.C.Sprint_2.27.651.6-3.A2SD.2.7U-3_signed) i updated to Recovery RA 1.6.2 so i can backup nandroid + ext. (I saw instructions that said to update to RA 1.6.2 if you had an earlier version, so I did. now everytime i try to do a nandroid backup + ext i get error: run 'nandroid-backup.sh' in adb. when i open command prompt and run nandroid-backup.sh it says i have to list a command {-b{--backup etc. thats where im lost. dont know how to enter it i entered -b (didn't work) entered --backup (didn't work). can someone assist me please?!?
I am using a2sd also.
I don't think you can do the nandroid+ext with amon ra recovery. Try just a standard nandroid.
You could also try clockwork mod recovery.

Try putting the recovery img on the root of your SD card ( make sure to name it properly ) power down ur device then reboot into recovery holding the home and power button then plug your phone into ur computer/laptop then from adb reflash the recovery might work for you good luck

if that doesn't work i would strongly suggest ClockworkMod Recovery. I've been using it for months now with no problem.
First I would suggest posting in the right section. This is a question and rules say don't post questions in this section. Its a very huge thread posted above saying this.
Don't be lazy next time and read rules.
But I would suggest clockwork mod recovery.

Most times when you get that error, it means there isn't enough space on your SD card to make the backup. Do you have at least 300 MB free on your card? You may even need more than that if you are trying to do nand + ext. That could possibly be the reason for your error if you don't have enough space.
I got the same error before I updated to Darch's Amon RA 1.7

yes second that one actually...i had only 200mb free from having 2 nandroids on my sd card..deleted one and had around 375mb and it worked great. must have 300mb in order for all the Temp folders/files to work.

My fav. recovery so far, but I'm using Darch's Godspeed now because he recommended it for Darktremor a2sd.
I usually get that error when I try to nand +ext, with full batt and lotsa memory on card and in phone. I've gotten it simply nand-ing w/ low batt too. I've put it down to a lack of understanding regarding Darktremor and a2sd in general.
With NFX Hero I get constant "android media" f.c.s and have no access to much of anything on sd. Usually run one of Darch's cm6s.

Drarch's 1.7 amon RA is slightly newer than Godspeed, ad it's also overclocked. I'd check it out, it's pretty good IMO
So can a nandroid + ext backup be done with RA 1.5.2? Thats the only reason i even changed the Recovery to RA 1.6.2 because this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7054986&postcount=7 Said you needed to switch to 1.6.2 id you didnt have it. I just want to upgrade my SDcard from 2GB to 8GB.
Just make sure you have more then 30% battery and decent space left on your SD card. Sometimes recoverys are corrupt but rarely. I use clockwork recovery. Don't freak either lol. You should have a working backup on your comp ^_^

OK so i was trying to switch recoverys for nothing. I figured if there was the option for nandroid backup + ext on the recovery then it should work. I mean i don't think developers would put an option that doesn't work, they'd just omit it right? Im still kind of new and this post says u need RA 1.6.2, if you dont have it get it. that's why i thought it wouldn't work. They should update that information.
Nand+ext 2 or 3 times w/ Darch's RA 1.7, no errors - thanks theimpaler747!
Often I can avoid old data by checking post dates, but sometimes that gets confusing, it's great when dev.s keep their instructions up-to-date! So what's the best a2sd to use w/cm6 builds? native? Darktremor (with out dated directions)? This stuff can change fast !
