Slow Rooted Mytouch - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

I have a bit of a problem, I have rooted my phone because everyone has always talked about what a boost in speed it would mean to your phone, and I have been a little disappointed. I don't know if I am doing something wrong here or what but here's what I'm dealing with -
Mytouch rooted with Cyanogenmod 4.2.13, I have a 16GB card, but it is only a class 2 card, maybe that is the problem right there, but I don't think so. I have 1 gig set aside for apps, and 160MB for my swap. And everything seems slow. The Dialer especially, whenever I push the green button and move around between contacts, and favorites, or the dialer, its super slow. But this also happens with other things, but thats the slowest. What can I do to speed things up?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i honestly think its your swap size! try having it down at 64 or 96...and also, what SPL are you on?

There are a lot of threads about that swap doesnt make sense on MyTouch/Magic

You dont need swap with Cyanogenmod.

Agreed I have the exact same phone, problem and rom you have and I had to ditch my swap and worked like a champ when i reinstalled the rom.

Ok, I'll try to lower my swap, I had it up so high because I'm using Sweeter Home as a home replacement and thought it would need some more, but I can lower it. Is there an easy way of doing that or do I have to re-flash? And I'm not sure what a SPL is, how do I find out?

So I changed my swap to 96 MB, and my SPL is 1.33.0006

Kingston 4gb minisd...

It is really freaking slow AND is never recognized by my 8125. I cant partition it either through windows or wm5storage. It transfers at about 30k/sec.... rediculously slowl. Im running XDA Mobile 6 Release 5 FINAL full!. Is there any patch or update or trick I can pull to get my 8125 to recognize my 4gb kingston minisd? Or atleast increse its speed?
Thanks,

I am sorry but Wizard is not suporting 4GB miniSD card very well. Some people reported, that some cards are working, but almost all are not working specialy because new cards are SDHC which need more specific hardware. So if it is your case and your card is SDHC there is no chance to get it work. If not make sure your card is formated to FAT16, try it in some memory card reader, if it works. And at the end this is not a good thread for memory cards. And 4GB miniSD cards have been already discused in Wizard accessories or Wizard upgrading thread, so search there your answers...
Try this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293556
I was just about to, but I got side-tracked, and now it's unreasonably late. I'll try it tomorrow if you will....
Scuse me lady...
Are you xtremely sure that this works...? it works for you?
Does you know that if you instal a hardware patch it never recognize the SD slot none SD card till you upgrade again or hardreset and it will cost many info?
so...
A men On hermes thread told me the newer versions of porting ROMS Builds has an entrie that allow read SDHC I think since 20273 but....
Does your wizard has it? seee on my Shipped ROM from Hermes WM6.0 already comes with this Reg entrie and so...
Is not the Software... cause if it would... the old .1933 that builds the rom I have it never comes ok? so...
You can see if the wizard has it and try this... I cant recomend it but make a high research and try it before post try this
its not recomended to do that...
first make it on your then recomend...
This is the REG
HKLM/drivers/sdcard/clientdrivers/class/SDmemoryclass
"inside... High_Capacity and many inside too...
Block transfer
dll
iclass
prefix
profile
So...
if wanna try it...
search for it on hermes threads.
So I tried it today (Sat, 11/8)
It didn't work, and nothing blew up, either. I guess I appreciate the recommendation, though.
Yes, I know there's a lot out there to try to solve this, but this looked easy, and I thought I'd offer it since you seemed to be looking for things to try.
I think I was very clear about not having tried it yet, so why did you ask me if I was sure it worked?
I back up everything daily, so it's pretty easy for me to reflash, or hard reset. No "data cost" ever. I'd recommend it. I guess being prepared makes me look pretty reckless when it comes to trying new things.
The fix also includes dlls, I didn't bother analyzing it, checking to see what the reg entry was in the fix, checking my own registry, or reading any Hemes threads. I don't have time. Again, if it blows up, I can handle it. If I weren't fully backed up I'd spend more time doing research on the dozens of fixes I try than I do backing up and recovering (I haven't had to for over a year, now). I don't generally care about the code details and what happens on other gadgets I will never own.
Good luck with this.
P.S. Please check my signature.
i am using amp v3 rom wm6.1
ust want to know how much capacity does wizard can supoort.
i have 1gb working well,can i upgrade to 2/3 gb & works well...
have you tried the SanDisk microSD with adapter?
I have it working on mine. faster than the old 1gb Kingston I used to have. It maybe the problem with the card it self.
try a different brand, or try the "ultra" series as well. they may have a better transfer rate as they were made for video games.
there is also an issue with formating the card:
if you decide to format using xp to fat32 it will run slower. unfortunately, the only way to recover it propperly was to put it into my camera and have it format back to fat16. xp would not do it.
again, i think your problem is kingston. they are good for ram on PC/MAC; but i do not think they have gotten the sd memory dow yet. next time get the origional "SD/SanDisk II"
good luck.
The speed is fine after I formated back to fat 16, thanks to my handy camera. But I cant seem to partition the damn thing into two 2gb cards... any thoughts? Ive done the wm5storage, card reader, xp/vista, partition magic, fdisk thing and none have worked thus far. Thoughts?

Hi
Its a registry hack just go to hklm/drivers/sdcard/clientdrivers/class/sdmemory_class and here modify the value of "Blocktransfersize" from 128 to 64 it fix the media player sound cracking but also slightly decrease the data writing speed on ur card. this will not harm ur card and ur card will work perfectly with ur card reader and if u dont use the card reader than when u want to transfer large amount of data(above 256 mb) u can increase this value upto 512.

SDcard Unexpectedly removing itself!!!???

Ok im about to blow my lid.. this is the second time im experiencing this problem.
Out of no where my sdcard removes itself. Its actually happen to where my G1 freezes, I actually try to reboot and it goes back into sign in!! Wtf!! my contacts are all gone my Gtalk has to sign back in.. THIS SUCKS. I'm currently on Dude 1.3 Rc2.. I'm an loyal dude rom fan and this has never happen to me.
Its happened twice so far and since the last time it happened ive changed my sd's im using a 4gb class2. Dont tell its the class2 cause Ive been using the same class2 since ive had app 2 sd and never experienced this..
Has this ever happen to anyone or is it a known issue if someone, anyone shed some light on my problem i would greatly appreciate it!!
THanks a million!!
Do your apps remove themselves as well when you have to sign back in? Like a normal wipe? Have you tried this with more than one SD card? How long have you had the phone?
Sounds like it could be hardware related...but trying wiping and reinstalling. Also, try not using APPS2SD and see what happens...because obviously, when your SD card stops working on Apps2SD, the background processes being run off the card are going to crash and lock up the phone, and you're needing to sign in because that data was stored on the card as well.
My friend had a defunct phone where not only could the SD card wiggle a little inside its slot, but the entire slot itself came off the board/wiring it was sodered onto, so if you've dropped your phone on that edge, that could be your problem. Every once in a while, it'll connect, but it can still unconnect at any time, like what you're experiencing.
Ext2 format itself!!
I actually noticed that my sd card is formating itself to Ext2(all 4 gbs) everytime this happens!! and its hell to format it back to fat32 this is got me going NUCKIN FUTS!! Ive never dropped my phone the sd card slot is intact and ive had the phone for quiet a while..
Also i use paragon to partition..
is it a 4 gb micro sdcard?
Edit. never mind didn't fully read it. the size of your sd card is your problem. I had a 4 gb and it pissed me off soooo bad. I don't know what it is about then but the phone doesn't like them. sorry.
yes, class 2

yeah buddy you're out of luck. buy a different size sd card and you will be good to go. I almost was going to try sending my phone back to t-mobile but then I figured since it started when I changed to that size sd card and I heard that they were having so much trouble with them with this phone that I would try a different sd card first. Switched to a 8gb class 6 sd card that I bought at target and things couldn't be working better.
hope this helps.

sorry, I just found that rude. oh well. but if he is having a problem may not just be the sd card size, the problem may lay within the ROM as you said before. I would try talking to dude and see if it is something on his end. If it is I am sure he would be glad to know about it and fix it.
i had this problem with the 1gb microsd that came with my g1! i had a 16g sandisk class2, and it got fried, so i had to use the original 1g as a temporary...it did that all the time, i was using it for a week or two and at least once a day itd do that sh*t. I never figured it out, i just bought a Transcend 16g class 6...works great. Wish i knew the answer for you guys, though, sorry...Hope you get it figured out...

I don't have an answer, but I hope this can add more info to your puzzle.
Same happens to mine every now and then. No reformat though, just pops up an error saying that the sd card has been removed. Then my custom ringtone (which resides on the sd card) stops being used and it reverts the default.
Am running on JFv1.51 ADP and have the stock standard 1gb sd card that came with the adp.
I don't have apps installed on the card, just the cache.
big nu, I know that you say it doesn't matter if it is a class 2 or not but I would just try a class 6 sd card.

I'm sorry I never ment any disrespect in any way when i said its BS my bad.
This actually used to happen to me even before the cupcake update. I used to used a 4gb class 6 card which eventually got fried..so I'm waiting for a new 1 to come in
I know this will seem really strange, but I noticed a trend throughout all the posts....seems like the G1 doesn't like lower numbers Go with a 16 GB, class 6 card and call it good I never had a problem whatsoever with mine, even though I am currently using an 8GB, and Dude's 1.2b. Once I pick up my 16 gig, I will let (you) know how it runs.
i keep having the same problem and i am running jf 1.51 us no themes or anything

Maybe rooting mytouch 3g. ??'s

Hey everybody, i have a mytouch 3g for a couple months now and i'm noticing that the keyboard in landscape is sluggish sometimes. Maybe thats because i have too many apps or what not. But i was thinking (for a while now), maybe i should just root it to get apps to sd. But i'm afraid to brick it or damage it. I also have the standard 4 gig card it came with and i'm not sure about if its enough or about the whole partition thing. Plus, i don;t want to lose my contacts, and pictures, and videos, etc. What do you guys think?

contacts are stored on your google account in the cloud, pictures and videos can be backed up to the pc. Rooting with cyanogen or super d would be a good idea. the best guide in my opinion is on: theunlockr.com
But is the standard card that came with it good enough for root, and why do i need to partition it? I'm just scared about ruining the phone and not getting a new one under warranty. ?

don't worry about the sd card side of things for the moment. it's totally optional and the two extra partitions are for moving your apps to the sd card to free up space - shouldn't actually be an issue on a mt3g as it has more storage than the g21 anyway, and adding a swap partition to 'increase' the ram - only used on some roms, mainly hero ones, and not strictly necessary. i would recommend, folloing the many guides on here and theunlockr to get a custom recovery and flashing either WG or superD - don't worry about the talk of danger spl or upgrading your radio - again, that's just for g1 users.
you should see a massive speed increase without the need to partition your card. if you then feel the need to do it anyway, make sure you're using a fast one (ideally class 6, but class 4 will do at a push) and use the amon RA recovery (remember to flash the mt3g one on your phone and not the g1 one) - there's an option on there that will do it all for you.

see the last line.
Try checking to see if the battery is the problem. Sometimes the G1 battery can get swollen or warped and could cause that problem. I was having the same issue last week and when I popped the back open, the battery was sticking out, looking like Larry Holmes, flabby and sick.
If that's not the issue, make sure you have Danger SPL installed correctly and an updated radio. You can check what versions you have installed by checking your Fastboot.
If none of that helps, do a full wipe and reflash the ROM I guess.
Hope this helps.

secondly, your swap is WAY too high, turn it down to 24-32mb (i use 24mb) and set your swappiness to 10, if your using swap make sure compcache is disabled.
for safe measure compeletly reformat your sdcard, however if your using swap and it is a corrupt portion of the sdcard (since class 4 cards dont have wear leveling to my knowledge).
if your coming from another rom make sure you dont have dalvik-cache still on your ext partition
before installing the rom, use fastboot or the format options in clockworks recovery to format system (may as well format data too if your installing fresh) and flash cyanogenmod then gapps..
donno what else to tell ya, without swap or compcache cm is much for our memory starved g1's. if your a light user than compcache is fine. if your a power user you should use swap. (this way if your listening to pandora for example, and you get a txt message it wont close pandora)
otherwise i dont know what to tell you, im runing cm5.08 with a 24mb swap, 10 swappiness on a properly fat/ext/swap sdcard. i have some custom tweaks and a custom kernel and the bidi font fix and everything is smooth.

First of all, caps and exclamation points do nothing to help you in this case. Calm down, take a few deep breaths, and realize that you are complaining about bugs in an outdated version of a ROM. Also, no one is forcing you to flash any ROM at all, so if it's that much of an issue, go back to stock. I wouldn't recommend recreating threads if this thread gets closed or moved, because that will only serve to piss off the mods who have the power to pretty much do whatever they want. Get a grip, upgrade to the latest version of cyan, and if you still have issues, look in the issue tracker, search the forums, and you will find what you are looking for. Good day.
I had strange problems in the past with my radio (not reachable after a while): what solved mine:
I've reflashed the original RC7 (android 1.0), rooted, flashed radio and spl and then recovery. Did then fastboot:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
reboot & flash any rom you like.
Succes!
btw: I think you should move to CM6 nightly too after installing android 1.0 (much better and (3rd party) things are up to date), shouldn't give any problems at all (but do a fastboot erase system -w when upgrading from 5.x).

If you need your phone so bad, don't mess with it especially if you're not smart enough to do it an figure things out without making a big fuss over things. You should have known what you were dealing with and the possible consequences of rooting your phone as it is with any device that you have administrative permissions on.

If you have people in your house, Mexican or otherwise (racist much?), why do you have time to whine on our forum? Seriously, if your phone is screwed up, it's because you screwed it up, so you can only be pissed at yourself. If you're not smart enough to figure it out, even with help, then give up on modding your phone and stick to stock. CyanogenMod comes with absolutely no warranty or support, and this is made extremely clear before you flash it. So... if you're not happy with the answers you're getting, then tough ****. You have no right to be mad if it doesn't work, whether it causes you to lose your job, become impotent, or be shot by Mexicans. That's what you accept when you use this software. Now deal with it.

Hidden partition

Hello,
i've found that somewhere in our ancient G1's is hidden partition where's stored stock firmware with stock radio, SPL and recovery. I wasn't using it and had it off about 2 months. When I've brought it back to life i was very surprised that it was derooted, stock. I had to do it again, everything. So it means that somewhere has to be partition with it. I think this could save bricked phones and it could be used as extended phone memory. Just an idea..
you sure its the same G1?
Maybe its your brother/sisters one

post tech detail or me think u = idiot
You'd be the first person it has happened to.
I see two options;
1. you're right and there's said "rootkit", it would bridge the gap between trout and sapphire boards by possibly bringing trout storage capacity closer to that of sapphire because, otherwise, they're identical.
2. the rooted build you were using was possibly using a build fingerprint that allowed the updater program to identify it as a legitimate device. if the new boot took longer than expected (or if for any reason during those two months the phone was turned on by somebody else without your knowledge and given access to a network) then there's the possibility that an OTA update was delivered and the phone updated, but I believe those updates require confirmation (unfortunately, my ADP1 doesn't receive OTAs, so I wouldn't know how the process works).
I'm more inclined to believe that the second option is the most likely, but the first option sounds tempting. Has anybody done a close inspection of the trout and sapphire boards? how different are they inside? is the nand inside the msm chip or outside on the pcb? if the nand is inside the msm, then it would make very little sense for qualcomm to make only one chip that was used exclusively for only the htc dream (is there any other device that uses msm7201A AND has only 256 MB internal storage?) and make an exactly identical one for wider use...
====edit====
After some wikipideaing, found out that there's only one another HTC device that uses the same layout as the dream, the touch diamond (msm7201A AND 256 nand). The majority of MSM7201As all have the sapphire's 512 nand. Oh, well, it was worth a shot.
So you're saying that patition maybe really could exist? I'm not a developer, i don't really understand it.
And ad 2. thougt - I can be really sure that no-one but me turned the phone on and boot was pretty fast opposed to CM 6 which i was using before this incident. And even if so, it wouldn't be 1.5 ...

practically no developers on xda-developers
the question is why do you think there is a hidden partition
and I do hope you are not getting mixed up with French cache
we all know about cache
And where could be whole stock firmware stored if it isn't in partition which is hidden for us? BTW it has to be in ready-to-use state, something like a BART backup, the partition must be big enough.
I think that if we knew about it, we were using it now, in example as extension of phone memory. Or as i said to recover bricked phones. It just happened that way. If you have other phone you could use instead, try to power off your G1 for same time.
You wanted tech specs - i dunno what exactly you want, it's just general G1, not ADP, stock version was 1.5. And even if i had last SPL, radio, AmonRa's recovery, after two months off, everything was stock, 1.5. I tried to start recovery - stock,.. i had to do whole rooting process again.
BTW - what's French cache?
