Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. All of your Android holiday wishes are coming true.
It has been confirmed that T-Mobile is releasing an Eclair update for the T-Mobile G1....
http://www.androidspin.com/2009/12/24/the-unofficial-offical-eclair-rom-for-t-mobile-g1-confirmed/
Finally, when we get those drivers we can build eclair from the source complete!
That would be real nice and since there is a ota coming out than that means that there is gonna be a adp2.0 coming out since the hard work is already done. Yay we are going 2.0
Thats fantastic news. Happy 2010 !
F**k yeah! But seriously this can only mean good for android on the whole, with more devices on like terms. I guess my aging g1 is more capable then i once thought!
Hopefully by the time we get to 3.0, they'll optimize it so much it will be super slim and capable of running on our G1's too!
Merry Christmas to all
But aren't ya wondering how they manage to fit it on the G1?

This isnt hero...Its eclair, hero/sense is owned by htc not tmo...htc didnt make the update since other caarriers of G1/Dream arent making updates.
I am wondering if it is a super slimmed down 2.0 and if we are gonna get the whole thing, I ? If it will actually be worth anything on our g1's

You will need to wait for devs to complete their 2.0 and cyanogen will probably make a new rom no more old 1.6 roms from him hopefully. Maybe camera will be fixed up real nicely too with new features i hoping
Great news !
hopefully this 2.0 for the g1 isnt a bag of bones that was once full of meat on the motorola droid. cuz dat will just b a cruel ass mr scrooge joke on us Dream holders
We've all pretty much proven 2.0 will fit on the Dream. The reason the Droid rom uses more space is because all resources for all apks (including framework-res.apk) are high-density, bigger pngs. There's not much more compression that can be obtained from a png, since it's already losslessly compressed, so the bigger the image, the bigger the apks, the more space the rom uses (remember the Droid has a 854x480 screen).
The dream/sapphire/hero have medium density screens. At build time, the build program decides whether additional art is necessary (for example, by using the specified device dpi) and if no hdpi art is needed, then it's not packed, keeping the apk size down.
When you pull out the same thing all through the rom, not including things not meant for that rom, for example, languages (the T-Mo US rom only supports a few languages) you end up saving a lot of space.
I pretty much proved with my 2.0 build that an almost full rom without odexes still has about 20+ MB free of storage in system on a standard SPL, enough space for odexes (and after stripping out the classes.dex from apks and jars) that Vendor roms ship with.
Android hasn't really grown by much. Some ways to save space include keeping out pre-loaded tts information (and instead having you download it from the market if you require it) or the before mentioned non-inclusion of uneeded art/resources. Also, remember shipping roms save about 2 MB by not including an xbin directory.
I have a source, though, who told me that 2.0 WASN'T coming to the Dream, but this was from HTC and not T-Mobile, so I really have no idea yet what that means.
It wasn't so much confirmed, it was actually more like "Hey, I heard that, eclair for the dream? it's not gonna happen".
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
This is good news, for sure. I didn't think that there would ever be an official release of 2.0 for the G1. I am excited.
I don't want this update until it's been properly cyanogenized
Great News!! But I really wonder why Google doesn't implement Apps2SD or something like that to their OS it would be a huge step!... It would be good!

If some idiot removes his sd then phone will become unstable and the average consumer would be clueless...If i gave my friend my G1 to borrow and it had the App2SD and he puts the sd in his phone or pc, the G1 would freeze and he would ,most likely assume he broke it..Hence why it would never be used in phones normally..Now if they just put 8GB+ internal mem(hard drive) then the phone would be better..And make the phone with atleast 1GB ram too.
It's all about the Hero...
Hero 2.0 or 2.1 will seal the deal.

Back in Nov there was news of a flash player 10 for the G1. Well, its Feb, has there been any word on a release or release date?
Adobe is famous for their vaporware. Knowing how Adobe is with ANY updates to flash, I would say that the chances of a version of flash for the G1 anytime this year are slim to nil.
True, but there really are some great minds at Adobe..
It wont be longer than a few months i dont think.
There was an article about a week ago that said that the reason why we haven't seen flash yet is because the 'lite' version for Windows Mobile is too stripped down while the full desktop version is too demanding. They need to make a version of flash that performs well and is feature rich. This takes A LOT of time and effort to complete.
I would say that when all of the features from cupcake go mainstream, Google will make flash a priority. It's probably on the backburner for now.
apple is on the verge of getting flash 10 too it would really suck ig they got it before android users
Google can't do anything about getting flash to us, except ask for it.
Same thing with Apple. It all depends on Adobe and who they like more.
I've seen videos of flash 10 for the g1. I'm guessing it was a WM version, but we'll just have to wait.

Haha dude, that was Apple that said that about Flash for the iPhone. The lite wasn't powerful enough, but the full version was too bloated. Google said nothing like that and they actually have a full version working on the G1.

And in the end that was just Apple's way of just trying to make a legitimate excuse why Flash isn't on the iPhone, but when you look at their licensing agreements Flash will never be allowed on the iPhone because its a development platform that people can use to side step Apple's Nazi Q&A department to get apps on the iPhone.
Personally I can't way for Flash support and my money is on it'll be here by the end of the year due to the increasing demand.
I'm Sooooo sick of people comparing the progress of the iPhone to the G1!!! iPhone is already getting ready for 3rd generation this summer. Why? Because after two years, it's still outpaced by the four month old G1!!! Once Google gets around to getting this thing up to it's full potential, Apple will have to return to the drawing board scratching their heads. Imagine when the next gen Android phones finally come out!!! Can't WAIT to see what these things will be capable of!!!
I think you mean when the next version of the OPERATING SYSTEM comes out. The hardware is fine as it is.
Regarding flash... don't expect it any time soon. It took them close to SIX YEARS to finally support current desktop CPUs.... in ALPHA.
swfdec and gnash are good places to start if anyone is interested in building an open source flash player for android.
are you saying the working demo of flash on the g1 is a hoax then?
cause if they have even a lite working version of flash currently i dont see what the problem is.

A. The G1 should have been AS good as the 2nd generation iPhone when it was released, because they actually had an example to learn and copy.
B.The G1 is far behind the iPhone in terms of performance and capabilities. It's not outpaced by the G1 by any stretch of the imagination.

Unfortunately, I'm not.
Maybe you can show me where I can find Google Earth on my G1?
Or as cool a media player as the iPhone has.
Or how about some really cool, arcade quality games?
Oh, and maybe you can tell me how to get my Push email working with exchange.
And multitouch. And the soft keyboard.
These are just a few of the little things.
My opinion: I think a ROOTED G1 is far better than iPhone in potential and capability.
Autorotation YES
Multitouch YES
Soft keyboard YES--already 2 versions available; will get better in 2 months or less
Run from SD card--flexible expandibility YES
Run all apps in background YES
Dont have to pay to do stupid crap like direct dial a contact YES
Open source YES
OS will run on lots of different phones and non-phones YES
Wireless Tethering YES
Significant updates all the time (now at RC33 since RC19 in November 2008) YES
Can use the OS to run a robot YES
Oh, I forgot these as well--
Change look and feel via custom themes YES
Huge cell phone companies like Samsung and Motorola and HTC jumping in YES

Let's see.
Soft keyboard? where?
Multi-Touch? 1 app only.
Autorotation? Not working untill I can get the new droidsans.
Open Source. Big deal. 95% of the Apps are crap. ALL of the games are crap.
Significant updates? It currently is approaching where it SHOULD have been on the first release.
Still not there yet.
"Soft keyboard? where?"
SoftKeyboard just came out this week. AKeyUI has been out for months now.
"Multi-Touch? 1 app only."
Well, actually 2--you obviously haven't seen Luke's Picture Sorter. Also, have you seen Luke's messages to the Google developers regarding multitouch? Seems to me that they were quite impressed.
"ALL of the games are crap."
I like Sudoku, Trap!, and other goofy little games--YZ, PapiJump, ThrottleCopter, Mastermind. These are time wasters when I am waiting in line or sitting in a waiting room. I also like the aReader books, Dracula, Call of the Wild, etc. They are also FREE. Do you think, just maybe, the quality of the games has something to do with their cost and the current ability to charge for them?
"Significant updates? It currently is approaching where it SHOULD have been on the first release."
This will be funny to anyone that knows about large-scale product releases. I will leave it at that, but poke your iPhone in this one. Anyone with the initial release of iPhone can attest to its problems.
Finally you forgot my last two points:
"Change look and feel via custom themes YES
Huge cell phone companies like Samsung and Motorola and HTC jumping in YES"
And you forgot these as well:
"Run from SD card--flexible expandibility YES
Run all apps in background YES
Dont have to pay to do stupid crap like direct dial a contact YES

Hi there,
I was wondering why does one of the boards have 288MB and the other 198MB. Then it occurred to me that maybe the space is there, just hidden from us. Why do I say this? Well, since the 198MB are Google enhanced devices, they allow OTA updates. If we look into the firmware file sizes, they are about that size. Could this be space reserved to keep firmware files while downloading updates? What if we find a way to bypass this "reserved space", activating the remaining space on the 32B boards?
This is just me brainstorming in my head. Let me know what you think.

HMMM yep i think your onto something their i mean why would htc waste money on 2 boards ????? cheaper to sell to voda but then why bother i mean we are talking pence per board here for htc so yea i think your prob right
We don't have something like iFixit ? No one has ever tried to open these toys and see what's inside?
OTA updates don't require any additional RAM, just FLASH. That means that the 192/288 thing doesn't apply.
And BTW: They're all OTA capable.
Check the specs on HTC site, nice idea, but really can't see this happening. Even a few cents per unit adds up when producting millions.
Producing 2 revisions of the board won't be that much trouble for them
as far as i know they use different chips too...
7200 and 7201, which is an altered version of 7200 for markets where(e.g. US) the 7200 has breached some patents and is not allowed to be sold
So they do have slightly different boards.
Can't some smart guy add memory to the system by taking some from that extra interal space that 192MB boards have?
Such a thing is definitely not unheard of in the computing world.. CPU manufacturers have been doing that for years selling 2 identical chips, except one intentionally clocked slower at a lower price.. Hell if you want to take it 1 step farther look at the AMD Phenom x3's where they disable a core on the CPU to sell it cheaper, where as a good motherboard now can re-enable that missing core for use.. I haven't seen the inside of a Magic to see the memory modules, but it is definitely more expensive to produce 2 boards then it is to produce 1.. However the board doesn't have to change, just the modules that are soldered to it.. You can often see this used in PC motherboards.. 1st time I noticed it was I had a Abit KT7 & an Abit KT7-Raid sitting next to each other.. They were identical except the raid module wasn't soldered onto the kt7 board even though all the contact points were there..
Basically the boards are going to be identical more then likely, But they would just leave out 1 step in the manufacturing process..
Anybody willing to crack open their Magic to make sure?

Yeah same here. I'm pretty sure I'd succeed in breaking my beautiful Ion
If you compare them to HTC Diamonds, you'll see that 32B is very similar to HTC Diamond and 32A is similar to HTC Diamond 2. Therefore, I assume that they are very close to their Diamond equivalents.
I would love to see this happen. could it really be as simple as it seems? from 192 to 288, thats a favorable jump I must say....crack the phone open and just post up a bunch of hi-res close up pictures and have one of the techy geniuses on the forums look solve the case.

hell yeah! do it
You'd need a very tiny star/Allen wrench. There are six screws under the battery cover, and a small tab that voids your warranty if you open the phone.
I'd consider doing it (since I don't use my Ion anyway). I fear there will be tiny, pain-in-the-ass-to-reinsert ribbons under there to connect things like the camera. It would maybe be possible to take the shell off without affecting them; however, it depends on how the thing is built.
Do it!!! Please?
Edit: If theory is indeed fact this could make a world of difference for those with the 32B board.
Ok guys, found something to help you open your Sapphire without being blindfolded
http://phandroid.com/htc-magic-manual.pdf
Get it before someone takes it out
So the idea is opening the device, take good close-up pictures of its guts and let us analyze it and see if there is any indication of what is the real available memory. Hopefully, we should see enough memory banks, totaling 288MB
I'm enjoying the irony of being asked by a community of phone aficionados to crack open a phone I don't use.
Hero is cool, but I still don't think I'll be giving up my iPhone anytime soon... =P
If we could get access to SAPPDIAG.ZIP or SAPPDIAG.NBH (perhaps from the people who leaked the Hero RUU), we could maybe run a RAM test that would show how much ram fastboot has access to.
That service manual confirms my fear of many ribbons and such that would need to be disconnected. Do we have good photos of the 32A, so we at least know where to look/what to compare?

Pfft, I can't even do HTML!
Photoshop, on the other hand...
Holy **** this would be awesome
I would love to switch between roms because everyday i am always re-flashing.
yea and I wanted to try CM6 but the lack of 4g, hdmi and FM radio hinders me from using it daily. Plus I'm running Baked snack 1.7 and I'm sick of waiting for the newest version to come out. And Donating $5? I'd do that if I wasn't broke, (not to mention I've gotta pay for speeding tickets) plus the fact that I have to donate to get the latest version (1.75) while waiting almost 3 weeks with the old version blows.
(I hope I get a job somewhere soon, applied everywhere today. Then I'll donate)
Here is the inevitable question, given yesterday's event. I have been researching and it seems the tech requirements for ICS are the same as those for Gingerbread. Of course, given how Gingerbread has been very heavy on the Milestone, I know that even a moderate increase in tech requirements would be too much on the Milestone. But does it have a chance in any way? And can we backport some of the features (e.g. new Copy-Paste) to CM6 and CM7?

I was waiting for someone to ask this ahah My guess is that when Cyanogen comes out with their version of ICS, Kabaldan or some other developer will try and port it to the milestone. Only time will tell...
Until the ICS source is published and reviewed, there can be no valid answers to such questions.
As Kabaldan noted, there's no way to know for sure until the sources are released, and that should take a little while still.
My guess: No, I don't think ICS is going to happen for the Milestone, at least not in an useful way. Along the history of Android releases, no matter what Google said about how a new release compares against an older release in resource usage, every new Android release always required a little bit more RAM than the release before: Froyo required more RAM than Eclair, but as long as you don't stuff your phone full with apps and you stick to a relatively "light" usage pattern, the Milestone still handled it pretty well. Then Gingerbread again required more RAM than Froyo, but now with Gingerbread we're really on the edge of what Milestone can handle - if you don't stick with a light usage pattern, you are sure to run into apps you need open being closed because of low RAM. I just can't see the situation improving, or even at best staying the same, with ICS.
I think a phone with at least 512Mb (like, say, SGS1 and many others released in the past year and a half) is most likely to be able to handle ICS with little downsides, but the Milestone obviously isn't in that league. The Milestone is a 2+ year old phone anyway.

Emphasis mine. I think you're taking that statement, that you've probably heard from Google and other sources, out of context.
ICS is supposed to unify the codebase for the Android OS, yes - for different form factors, i.e. Tablets and Smartphones. And that's it. It's not a silver bullet that's supposed to cover ALL Android devices.
I see the SDK on RC14, give a try of course i'm pessimist too.. already with Ginger everytime i open an heavy app the home collapse for free usefull ram.

Some of us have contracts with our phone companies that don't end for another or two.
Physical limit sucks >.>, but agree with dmo... it's pointless trying to use Win 7 on P4 hardware single channel xD. About that RAZR is extremely sexy and got my attention... and i read an article where they point out the UK version could have bootloader unlocked , (and ICS update on mid 2012, but i rely on xda dev, like always and not direct support from M).
I'm sorry, but I gave up on my Milestone and bought a Galaxy S2.
For too long I've seen that the only major development this phone receives is through (very appreciated) kabaldan's work, and that's not acceptable.
Motorola abandoned this phone way too soon, yet at the same time refused to unlock it so that the skilled programmers stuck with this piece of hardware would be able to do something about it.
Not going to choose Motorola again anytime soon until they start giving their users the services appropriate to a smartphone (be it long term support or unlocked bootloaders).

There are various other people who greatly contribute to the milestone modding community, and I'm sorry to hear that you don't understand that. Yes, while I too believe kabaldan has made some noteworthy and astounding contributions to the milestone modding community, he is not the only one and you should not just neglect the efforts of other developers.
Although I have to agree with you in the case that the motorola milestone's time to shine is over. While we can overclock the processor and apply various to achieve better performance, with the lack of ram and the inability to play most memory-intensive apps I do believe it is time for an upgrade. Finally, if I misinterpreted your comment, please let me know and I will try to change my comment accordingly.
Now about the Galaxy Nexus:
Although the Galaxy Nexus compared to a lot of the other competition seems to have underwhelming specs, it is still the first ice cream sandwich phone which Google and Samsung sat together which means that the hardware will be optimized for the software and also that the developer base would probably be extremely huge because of the number of consumers purchasing this product. ( I mean look at the Nexus One!) The only problem that I see with the Galaxy Nexus is that the GPU is 4 years outdated so it might not be the best phone to get but then again how many games do you really play on your phone? (I think the GPU is identical to the GPU in the Nexus S but apparently the processor is more-so tailored for multitasking and better performance, but not gaming)
Edit: Sorry for the partially irrelevant post :S
My milestone can barely run gingerbread, I have to use the less memory consuming apps for a semi-smooth phone, I don't think milestone can run ICS and if it does, it will be really slow

It is
But it runs Win 8 smoothly
That said, I think the modders will manage to make ICS usable on Milestone by removing some features and/or seperating vital processes from non-vital ones (like the Google Maps location service in latest CM7)
Even Windows 7 is smoother than Vista, and 8 seems to be lighter too.
Mi friends report me that iOS 5 runs better than 4 even on 3GS.
So we could have a good chance to port ICS with better results than GB on our MS.. finger crossed!!!
UPDATE! Romain Guy, renowned Android OS developer, just revealed that starting with 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, Android brings hardware accelerated 2D rendering to phones! Maybe rip some needless features of ICS. It's just the hardware UI Acceleration that is important
milestone was a great phone, no doubt. the main problem is that the motorola customer service is terrible all around the world. in fact where im live hungary, the last motorola reseller closed permanently and the last customer service company moving out from the country, so the only option to take any motorola product to a bad repair service what is sending motorola phones to the closest service depo, like czeh republic. sometimes this is taking for 1-2 months.
this is happening many other country too, the only hope that google open their eyes and realise that not abandon the motorola brand (what is part of the big google branch now) and do something or else the motorola sooner or later going into the garbage.
i sold out my motorola, however i really like it, especially the hw keyboard, but i cant run many apps in recent days what i needed for my job, and my company buy for me a new phone. first i just retired my moto, packed to the original box nicely, but one of my friend told me that buy my milestone. in time i realise my new phone is so much faster than the moto was, that im not missed the greatest thing of the milestone: the hw keyboard.
so i decided to sell my milestone to my friend..
once again without Kabaldan this phone was a useless metal piece long time ago, so id like to thank you for all the hard work!
im with cm7 in my new phone, so cm7 always in my phone hearth
milestone is my first android phone ever and i never forget this!
Just wanted to give the official announcement that I finally upgraded from the old Hero. I have dev'ed in this thread in the past and have downloaded COUNTLESS roms from these respectful devs on this thread.
But I am here to pay my respects to this phone and this thread. I am going to miss it. The Hero I have still looks as good today as the day I bought it. Runs better than the day I bought it, and has more space than the day I bought it thanks to the great minds that be here.
This phone has overcame more than any other phone out there. When it's ABRUPT EOL was set forth by HTC, we said NO! We will not stand up to this money making scheme! When it was too crippled to use with updates, we made it so. When it wasn't fast enough to run something, we reverse engineered it (or made fresh) kernels with overclocking capabilities. When there was not much space, firerat had to go all scripty on it and give fourth abundant space. And yet, there are still ROMS coming out for this phone.
I believe this is the greatest dev phone ever (for roms). And I will always remember it as the first smartphone I ever owned.
The new phone is a Droid X btw. Not the fastest but darned sure it's competent for the job.
Also, I am not putting my phone to rest. It is residing now with AOSP 2.3.5, and is going to be used to dev out apps.
So to this thread and everyone in it I say.

nice... is it the droid x or the milestone x?
MilestoneX if you with CSpire .

I recently upgraded my phone too (iPhone, since I'm a mac person through and through, already jailbroken) and I agree with the above posts; this phone was a perfect phone. Sprint and HTC didn't make it that way, this community did. Thanks to all the devs and cookers for making this phone bearable at first, and awesome until the end.
I too feel the same way. The devs here are awesome. I still use my hero but because of the lack of RAM, flash player, processor speed, screen size, and front facing Cam, I am going to finally be getting the Evo3D in the next month.
Long live the hero!!

I just upgraded to the Evo design 4g.... I miss my hero... the little engine that could...
Just fyi it is the milestone x though its the exact same phone as the DROID x just rebranded. And I am with cspire but it was a deal where I could keep my all you can eat plan (would be very uncertain I could get a free /subsidized phone and keep the same plan later on.) And now they are locked into it for two more years with me. (tehehe )
peace hex, enjoy

Yeah, thats about the only reason i would turn mine in...to re-up with another unlimited plan for guaranteed two more years. But, otherwise, to be honest, I don't have any reason to upgrade. The Hero with 2.3.7 (kush GB deck) is VERY smooth for me and does just about everything I would want. We've got our pick of some great ROMs, and with firerats mod, i don't have to worry about app space. I don't care about front facing camera and the processing speed isn't phenomenal. But it does what i need it to do. I actually kind of like the smaller screen too. Some of these new phones are getting ridiculous with how big they are.
I guess the only other deal breaker for me would be new apps being incompatible with what the hero can do. Seems like the new Google Music (4.0.9) could fit in this category.
