I bought a phone from craigslist and it appears to be bricked.
Under the suggestion of a friend, I am trying to find out how to fix the phone by reading xda-developer forum but I'm a bit lost..
The phone boots and get stuck at the HERO screen and won't go any further.
I am able to back+end to get to the screen that says
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.261
MAY 27 2009, 19:06.41
I checked the sd card that was in the phone and it looks like the seller had played around with rooting/installing rom. The file KiNgxKxROM_v2.3_signed.zip is in the root of the sd card.
I tried following the tutorial that show how to access the phone using adb but it doesn't list the phone under list of devices attached.
When I connect the phone via usb, my window7 doesnt recognize the device under the device manager. I tried installing the HTC sync and it still doesnt see it.
I'm at a loss what to do from here, I think I need to download a file to the sd card and use update.zip to install a new rom but not sure which one I'm suppose to use and I don't want to do anything else to the phone that might give it permanent damage to the point of no return.
If someone can guide me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it as I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the info here.
Thanks in Advance.
Power it on with Home + Power tell me what screen comes up. If it is a custom recovery you can just flash CyanogenMod.
what recovery image is it? power on using HOME AND POWER AT THE SAME TIME. if you see an option to "wipe ext filesystem" DO IT. once its wiped, reboot the phone, that should work. the guy probably didnt wipe the ext filesystems, and hero roms will bootloop if the ext filesystem is not wiped
First of all, thanks for helping me through this..
Home+Power goes to Android system recovery
-Reboot system now
-USB-MS toggle
-Back/Restore
-Flash zip from sdcard
-Wipe
-Partition sdcard
-Other
I have removed the sd card from the phone, the sd card shows there is a KiNgxKxRom_v2.3_signed.zip, should I wipe, then flash zip from sdcard?
can I safely assume that the phone has been unlocked and rooted?
Thanks for your help
Here's what I have found..
-USB-MS toggle: clicking on this enables the mount of the usb and I am able to see the SD card in my win7 but adb shell still doesnt see it under the list of devices attached
-Backup/Restore: clickign on this gives me these options
-Nand backup
-Nand + ext backup
-Nand restore
-BART backup
-Bart restore
-Flash zip from sdcart: clicking on this ask me if i want to flash the KiNgxKxRom_v2.3_signed.zip
- Wipe: gives me these options
-Wipe data/factory reset
-Wipe Dalvik-cache
-Wipe SD:ext partition
-Wipe battery stats
-Wipe rotate settings
-Partition sdcart: clicking on this gives me
-partition SD
-Repair SD:ext
-SD: ext2 to ext3
-SD: ext3 to ext4
I'm not sure if these are the original settings or if they are of a new rom.. so I'm listing everything here.
It's not bricked. Find the right ROM that you want and flash it.
can I safely assume that the phone has been unlocked and rooted?
That looks like Amon Ra's recovery image. Your phone is fine. =) I'm not sure what phone you said you have but i'm guessing it's a G1. Just as they said, choose this option:
-Wipe SD:ext partition
Then do:
-Repair SD:ext
Then reboot and see if it boots into the hero rom. If it doesn't, try installing another rom like Dwang's or Cyan's Rom. Are you familiar with flashing roms?
Edit: The phone is Rooted. It's got Amon Ra's recovery image. =)
It's a mytouch and my GF got it for me as a surprise because she heard me mention I wanted to upgrade my G1 to the mytouch.
I'm new to the whole flashing scene and this will be my first.
by the way, I'm on ATT and if its been rooted I should be able to bypss the Hero screen but with or without the sim in the phone, I was stuck at that screen so I thought my GF got a bricked phone. I even tried it with a friend's T-Mobile sim with data and same issue persists.
forgot to mention, it says Build: RA-sapphire-v1.5.1G
I tried -Wipe SD:ext partition Then do: -Repair SD:ext but same problem, stuck at the Hero screen. I'm ready to flash my first rom since it seems like my phone has been rooted.
Can I flash with this rom? It says its for 32A but my phone says PVT 32B
PORT][EBI1/32A]Cyanogenmod 4.2.9.1 EBI1/32A Port [Dec 18][CM D partition for this release)
Apply Zip: HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip
Apply Zip: update-cm-4.2.9.1-signed.zip
Apply Kernel Port Zip: rad-4.xxxx.zip or bc-4.xxxx.zip
If it still doesnt boot.
Follow the Below instructions to bring up to CyanogenMod Donut 1.6 Rooted.
PS: If your on AT&T 3G will NOT work.
Mount the USB with the SD Card installed via Recovery. A new PC Drive will show up in Windows
Download the Following
http://dx.infernix.net/DRC83_base_defanged.zip &
http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/update-cm-4.2.9.1-signed.zip to root of SD CARD
Inside Recovery (Home+Power)
Wipe
Run Apply SD CARD CHOOSE ZIP
Selected DRC83_base_defanged.zip
Let that flash
When finished Write Update-cm-4.2.9.1.signed.zip
Let that finish then select reboot System now.
Once that is finished you will have a fresh system. No Hero anymore but the standard Android Donut rooted and CyanogenMod.
Detailed Directions
You will now install the actual OS of the phone. First you will install the legal Google apps, and then you will install CyanogenMod on top of those apps.
1.Turn your phone off.
2.Hold the Home button while booting to get to Recovery mode.
3.Select "wipe data/factory reset") (MT3G/Magic boots to andrOid then black screen with back-lite if you don't do this.)
4.Select "apply any zip from sd")
choose "DRC83_base_defanged.zip"
5.Press home to confirm and let installation complete ('Formatting Cache' will stay at the bottom of the screen but once the menu reappears, the flashing is complete)
6.STOP - DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE
7.Again, select "apply any zip from sd")
choose "update-cm-4.2.x-signed.zip"
8.Press home to confirm and let installation complete
9.When this is complete, reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back or selecting that option.
10.Wait. This will take a couple of minutes. Be patient!
sffr: You wrote, "PS: If your on AT&T 3G will NOT work."
can you explain why? I thought if the phone is rooted i can use it with any carrier?
Rooted refers to you having "SU" Super User permissions and being able to flash any rom.
AT&T uses different 3G Frequncies: ATt 3G uses 850 and 1900 Mhz for 3G
T-Mo uses: 1700 Mhz & 2100 Mhz.
The MyTouch 3g Supports HSDPA/UMTS on 1700 Downlink and 2100 Uplink so they arent compatible.
I dont know if it will work on AT&T it might still be Carrier lock I'm not sure what happens to SIM lock once you root.
sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you mean ATT wont work but you meant 3G. Yeah, unfortunately I'm stuck on edge.
I am flashing following the steps you mentioned, wish me luck and yeah I might need to get an unlock code for the phone after it resets.
Thanks! I'm able to boot to the activation screen but its asking me to an unlock code so I'm going to get one now
If you are getting an question for the unlock code, your phone was not unlocked yet. Get that done. As for 3G, unless you have the 32A (Rogers), you will not get 3G with AT&T. You will still get Edge (usable). I have edge on my ion and rogers magic has 3G with att. ATT and T-Mo use different frequencies for 3G and mytouch do not come with the right radio for 3G to be used with AT&T
Congrats man, you just learned a whole lot in a little amount of time.
this seemed to be working for me but once i did the drc83 it said E:Verification failed E: Corrupt file:system/media/audio/ringtones/terminated.ogg
Installation aborted.
idk...strange stuff i hope its not bricked

My problem is that the phone wont boot pass the Android flash screen. It does get past the first Vodafone screen.
My hardware is the 32B running Hboot = 1.33.0004 (SAPP10000)
what I have done so far is to be able to boot to RAv1.2.1G I have been able to back my phone up using android (and restore).
I thought using this procedures I would be able to able to add customs ROM by just renaming them to update.zip, they seem to load into the phone just get stuck on the above screen.
I haven't done anything with the SPL (Hboot) as to me it appeared booting to Rav1.2.1G does this for me.
I also have not flashed the Rav1.2.1G image to the phone, instead using the fastboot option each time I was to perform the rom update.
Any ideas way the phone wont get past the second screen?
make sure you have 'wiped' data, if you have the 3 partitions on your sd card, make sure you have formatted over the ext3/4 one.
Update the zip again, and pray lol
I have tried wiping the data after the upgrade and not the before, I'll give the before a go.
I only have one partition on the sdcard which was formated in windows 7
Cheers wiping data just before the update of the ROM fixed the issue.
pls connect the usb to pc and post the output of
Code:
adb shell logcat
cheers
EDIT: nevermind, you solved in the meantime
Not sure how to fix it. Before it happened, I was rooted with a Cyanogen rom on 1.6. I also had a black and green theme on. I went to install a new rom called "OpenEclair". I downloaded it, placed it in my sdcard root folder, and tried to install it. I had an installation error and it aborted. At this point, I figured ok, I'll just reboot. It kept me at the G1 screen for over 25 minutes, so I knew something was wrong. So no matter what I did from here on out (trying to perform a backup restoration, flash a different rom, etc), I would be stuck on the G1 screen. Finally, I flashed a JesusFreke rom and it let my phone come back on, so I haven't tried anything since. However, this rom is ANDROID 1.1. It sucks. Is there any way I can get back to either where I started, or even get this OpenEclair 2.1 rom working properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. When I try to install the OpenEclair rom (before and after downgrade) it will say
E:Can't chown/mod /system/xbin/librank
*No such file or directory)
D:Failure at line 221:
set perm 0 0 06755 SYSTEM:xbin/librank
Installation aborted.
Press Home+Back to reboot
I had this also. The problem went away after I installed DangerSPL which, as stated at the top of the OpenEclair thread, is required to install this on the G1.
If you don't have DangerSPL, OpenEclair will fail to install as it doesn't have enough room to place its files.
However, if you do have it...
I have noticed this with some of the 2.1 ROMs. I think the reason is that, since we flash using an "updater", it wont wipe the partition before flashing. This leaves the possibility that there are old files with different permissions that prevent the new ROM from properly taking.
Boot your phone into fastboot (for the G1, hold the camera button while powering up), set it into usb mode (by the "back" button, I think), then use the fastboot tool to clear the boot and system partitions:
/fastboot wipe boot
/fastboot wipe system
This will clear the "ROM" component from the phone, and you can then go and flash whatever ROM you want. Make sure to wipe the data partition via recovery.
If, after wiping the ROM and rebooting, the phone is stuck at the carrier screen and says "Fastboot USB", that means it tried to boot the usual way and found no data in the boot partition. You need to boot into recovery and flash a ROM. Using "fastboot reboot" or the reboot command from the phone's fastboot screen will cause this. Use the phone's fastboot "power off" button ("menu" in the G1), then boot it into recovery.
Also remember that any install that fails after the "verification" phase will destroy the existing ROM, since you will be left with a partially installed ROM on top of the older one.
Thanks a lot guys. will try all of this when I get off of work. Much appreciation!
Got everything worked out. Just had to install that danger spl :]
Just flashed FastTest rom, pretty freakin' nice I must say!
Is there a way to backup all my apps/contacts/texts before wiping and flashing a new rom?
I have a mytouch 3g that i rooted a while ago and i install new rom's on it once a while.. yesterday i installed enomther's ADP rom that did not work out because the screen goes black after the second boot screen! i can still press HOME + POWER to go to Anom_Ra's Recovery... i installed the US version (not adp) on my phone and it still goes black..
is it bricked?
please help - how do i fix it?
did you make a nandroid backup? if not try to go into fastboot by turning off your phone, plugging it in and pressing back+power. then try flashing a new rom using fastboot commands. (fastboot flash xxxx...)
No your phone isn't bricked. All you need is a computer just mount your phone through the ra recovery and just download another Rom on to your sd card and flash
You might also want to try flashing again after a full wipe including dalvik, ext, battery, and rotation settings.
ok i did that- full wipe and install enomther's ROM again for TMO-US only... but magically, my root dissappeared... i dont have a super user application and im being prompted for an OTA update.... i didnt use a goldcard to root my phone so idk wat happened..
but how do i get my root back????
It sounds like you only flashed the base. What files did you flash?
i flashed the rooted base and the expansion files.. and then a theme...
do i do it all over again??
Sounds like you rebooted in between the base and ROM. You'll have to re-root/downgrade/whatever.
i dont remember how i did it last time... so can you point me in the direction that does NOT use a gold card..
i can still use my Amon_Ra's Recovery btw....
I have a desire S, Which is S-Off through revoltionary and rooted! But i don't have a nandroid backup and my phone will no longer boot up. what can i do? I've tried to do a factory reset in recovery mode but that doesnt work.
How can i flash a stock rom on it to get it back to normal, i think its bricked... can someone help me?
1st of all i suggest you download a custom rom from the development section here.
then flash that via recovery. then hopefully your phone will load up into the new rom.
after you confirm this to me i will help you further to get back to stock rom
Thanks for the reply.
I did what you said, i tried to install a custom rom in recovery but it ends up aborting after a while, i dont think i can get any rom to work now, its not looking good
Fingers crossed
See this thread
Attempt the commands that are shown within the first #1 of it and you should be able to determine whether or not you have a fried eMMC chip.
See links in my signature for adb & fastboot drivers and the thread you need to see.
What recovery are you using? and what rom are you trying to flash?
I suggest downloading this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048203
Once you have done this follow these steps below to the letter
1. Boot into recovery
2. Format System (not wipe option but format option !!!)
3. Format Data
4. Format Cache
5. Wipe Data/Factory reset (1st option in wipe/format menu)
6. Wipe Dalvik Cache
7. Now install zip from sd card and flash the rom
8. Reboot
It was the Saga LBC mod that i was trying to install but it didn't work, nothing works that i try. i've formatted my sd card nom. basicly ive screwed everything up i've got no back ups of any rom and i cant get anything working

can you give me a step by step explanation of what you are doing and what messages/error messages you are getting at each stage?
I will try to help you the best i can. But i need to try to understand what the main issue is 1st. Don't worry just yet!

You need to give specifics and preferably screen pictures....(if possible) did you try the commands from the thread that I posted above, or what happens when you attempted the commands layed out by Eclipse_Driod above?
The more you tell us, the more we have to work with!?
I'm sorry but I dont know how to do the command thing, i'm a newbie when it comed to that I've basicly got a desire s that wont boot up and a SD card with nothing on, i think i need to somehow put a recovery image on my phone before i can install a rom
Is there any way i can install a recovery image to the sd card from the pc, that will then allow me to install a rom?

I believe that you already have a fully working recovery on your device, otherwise you wouldn't have been able to flash LBC ROM in the first place....so I suspect that the problem is else where....(possibly damaged eMMC chip) but unless you help us, by running the commands and testing this we are un-able to confirm this for you.
You can find the adb and fastboot commands as a link in my signature simply download and then put these on you PC and run the commands that were in the thread I posted earlier (thats also in my sig Fried eMMC?)
Although I also believe that if you're able to get to S-OFF then you're able to enter the commands from your PC that will enable you to flash a recovery onto your device.
See this post where I've previously instructed some one else how to do just this.
Any questions then just and try to take screen captures or cut 'n' pastes of all errors encountered.
Good luck

does it not even boot into recovery?
you need to hold down the volume down button and keep it held down while you power on the device. This will make it boot into recovery mode.
But before you can do that i would advise you take the sd card out of the phone, connect it to your computer with a card reader and copy over the lbc mod rom.zip file straight onto the card, then put it back into the phone.
then turn the phone off and boot into recover as mentioned above and select install rom from sd card and select the zip file you transferred over.
after it has installed reboot phone by selecting the "reboot" option in the recovery mode.
all should now be well.
report back how this goes
and don't forget to hit that thanks button
Thanks for your patience.. I'm going to try and explain in full what i've done
I got S-off on my Desire S using "Revoluntionary" (after watching how to do it on YouTube) and after domwloading ClockWorkMod from market place I sucessfully installed Saga LBC ver 5.3. Everything was fine i was very pleased. I had a back up of the old stock ROM saved on my SD card which i did through Clockworkmod too.
Then this morning I got a update message from clockworkmod saying ver6.0 was available to download so i did. My phone never turned back on again I could get into recovery mode but nothing would work (wipe data, factory reset, Even tryin to install the old backed up rom didn;t work) it just kept freezing.
So i took my sd card out and plugged it into the pc to try to look for anothr rom to try out, thats when i ended up formattig the SD card (god knows why) So now ive got no backup, no clockworkmod, no nothing on my SD card...Am I screwed??

from what you have told me u still have clockwordmod recovery as it is on the phone itself. not the sd card. So you are ok there. What i need you to do next it to see if you are able to boot into recovery?
if you can then try again to format data, system and cache.
then try installing a rom from your sd card.
if it is still freezing while trying to perform a format then look back at bens previous posts about using adb through your pc to find out if your emmc chip is damaged
I can boot into recovery no probs there, but when i format data, system and cache it goes so far and then aborts
Ive just tried to install the LBC rom again i renames it PG88IMG ind it asked me to install so i did. It says 'update in progress' and the bar on the right starts to fill up but it stops near the top and eventually aborts
right, the only thing i can think of to try next is following the same method you said you followed to s-off through revolutionary.
it will say you are already s-off or something but click proceed anyway. and make sure from there that you type "y" when it asks if you want it to install clockworkmod recovery. as this will reinstall a fresh recovery image for you.
this is the only thing i can think of.
let me know how it goes
did you look at my post#11 above...
The second half of it contains instructions on how you can flash a new recovery image......from your PC.
Ive just tried to do the s-off again the way i did before but i can only go as far as the part when i connect my phone and open the revolutionary programme and it doesn't detect my phone
Ok, it looks like the last option to try is flashing a new recovery image manually.
For this you will need to download and install adb. which can be found here
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
along with instructions of how to set it up and use it.
after you have done this you will need to download this
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-saga.img
which is the latest clockworkmod recovery for your phone. and rename it to recovery.img
then copy the recovery image to a convenient location on your computer, preferably with a short path. We will be placing it on the C Drive directly (not in any folder) and using that in the next steps.
Power your device off and reboot it in fastboot mode. (holding volume down whilst pressing power on button) then select "fastboot" from the list of options you get.
Connect your device to your computer via USB and wait till you see ‘fastboot USB’ on the screen.
Launch Command Prompt and type the following command:
fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img
Wait for the process to finish and reboot your device once it’s done.
hi
I've tried to downgrade my HTC EVO 3D GSM HBoot 1.49.0018 but not successfully, and then I have flashed a custom ROM with s-on without backup with the result my phone was stcuk the boot screen.
so I searched for some threads so I could fix it with the home screen and I found one where I should
Wipe data / factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
format / system
format / data
format / cache
install custom rom from sd card
reboot
so now I'm stuck with a custom rom unlocked pre s-on phone
is there any way it can be fixed
I would like to have full root and s-off
Yes im a noob but if you dont try you never lern
Can you get into recovery? If yes reboot in to recovery and connect your phone to pc follow this:
Download AlphaRevX and extract the files to a folder. (A form will show up on the download page, keep it opened.)
Connect your device to the system and run Aplharev.exe.
You will be asked to enter a Beta key at this stage. Simple copy the serial number that shows up in the brackets in the prompt as shown in the screenshot above, and paste it into the form on the download page.
Hit the Generate Key on that form and once you have the key, enter it into the prompt to see a Beta key accepted message.
The application will start the S-Off procedure and should complete in around 90 seconds. Incase it does not start, wait fro around 15 minutes and re-do the whole process.
This might require debugging ticked earlier and knowledge of adb.Not sure it will work or not because I dont own a htc device and havent been in a situation like this.I'm not responsible if anything happens. But trying doesnt affect though.
Thx but it will not help because there is that I must choose hboot but I have not some of them listed 1.49.00007 and 1.49.00008 and i have 1.49.00018 then I have to downgrade more ideas im open for everything
