Hey guys. I'm posting my quest to true mobility and hoping some of you can comment or give some advice.
Even before I purchased the XDA II, I have wanted to become completely mobile with my wireless communicastions. I want to put a headset on and control everything with my voice. Though we're not quite there yet, here's what I am going for.
First accesory is the Jabra BT250 Headset. It works great with my XDA II. I have the Tmo rom. I have customized all my contacts with personal rings. I downloaded a program that reads text. Now whenever someone calls, Microsoft Mary via my XDA II, then via my headset says "You have an incoming call from ____." I wish there was a piece of software that could do this for me. All I want it to do is tell me someone is calling and read the person's name. MS Voice Command does a pretty decent job reading names, but there is not way to get it to announce calls. My method of producing a .wav for every contact works, but it's a pain to do, and you constantly have to make new files for new contacts. But most importantly though, this method makes it possible for me be know who is calling without touching my device. I dont' even have to touch it to answer as my headset has an answer button on it. This is the best I can come up with so far. If anyone has any sugguestions or can comment, please do so.
Next thing I want to do is to be able to dial calls via my headset. Jabra says in the manual the headset supports voice dialing on regular phones, but I don't think this complies with the XDA II. I spent a little time trying to get it to work, but I can't get MS Voice Command to hear me via the headset. Moreover, I would like to be able to listen to media playng on my device via the headset. I want to be able to create a connection or to make it think it has to be on because there is a "call" in order to let me use it like a regular, wired headset. Maybe there is software for this, I havn't found it though.
I also want my XDA II to read me my SMS messages when they come in. Pref. over my headset. I also want to to drive my car, give me my haircut, shovel the snow. Those are future projects though.

There must have been discussion on this before as well, i am sure..

Resco AudioRecorder and Vito Audio Notes will do what you want to do, if your device supports the feature.
On my HTC Wizard the only way to record both sides of the conversation is to turn the speaker-phone on.
The Vito programmers have included a function in Audio Notes that turns on the speaker-phone automatically when you answer a call. I would assume that they did this because they found no other way around the problem on some devices.

OMG use search ffs theres a thread as long as your arm (perhaps even longer) where the slickest programmers in the know from XDA dev try everything (and i mean everything) to get this to work then outline the reasons why it wont.

hey buddy, thank u so much for lettin' me know about Vito Audio Notes, it works perfectly fine with my phone, though it needs the speakerphone to be on, while recording. But Something is always better than Nothing. I can compromise on that. And unlike Nokia, there are no more continuous annoyin' beeps at the background, while recording. Thanks again, mate.

Here is an extract from mVoice manual:
"For Treo devices direct phone call recording is not available because of the hardware limitations of Treo devices. However phone calls can be recorded on Treo 750/700w having the following in mind:
− If you are using a headset you will be able to record only your voice - sound from the other side of a call cannot reach mVoice since Treo directs it to the ear speaker.
− If you are not using a headset, sound from both participants of the phone call will be recorded, but to make it usable you should turn on the "Speaker Phone" option after answering the call."
Record calls with Wizard without speaker phone
I can record calls getting both sides of the conversation without having to be in speaker phone mode. using my Wizard. Button 4, just hold it down and it will record as long as you hold the button down. I have that button (4) assigned to Record.

Button? what button? Do you mean function + 4 on the keyboard? Or the touchscreen "4" button?

Install this cab file, and install any voice record software, it will record two-way conversation. This cab was created by Mskip, even though I found the reg file.

Do you have a link for the voice recorder app (in .cab form) that comes with the phone.. the one that starts recording when you hold down Button 4. I installed a custom ROM that didn't come with this app.

WM Sound Recorder
I use WM Sound Recorder to record my HTC Touch Pro phone conversation. It could record outgoing and incoming calls automatically. maybe you could have atry.
In short
Call recording and answering machine softwares are available , but needs speaker phone to be on.
This is hardware limitation with HTC but works with some other windows mobile devices like O2.
If works with HTC please let us all know.
Recording for mobile phone users
While this thread is old, a Google search for the topic finds it, so I'll comment. I've always found a voice recorder useful, for general non-phone, landline, and mobile phone use (particularly for recording otherwise undocumented customer (dis)services promises). A Nokia 9500 phone with Psiloc Extended Recorder software gave me most of what I wanted when out and about, but landline recording was problematical. Windows Mobile is more difficult.
But I've found a solution which is pretty much perfect for me. It sounds theoretically awful, like recording music with a microphone in front of the radio, but works extremely well, with both sides of the conversation recording at similar sound levels and without extraneous noise. After buying a "cheap" Chinese recorder which plugged into the landline connection, that ticked the right boxes and worked as specified, but didn't do the job well in practice, I got the right equipment: a tiny voice recorder (95x37x10mm, 47g) and a microphone that sits in your ear, underneath the phone speaker or a hands-free (but not in-ear) headset. Olympus does lots of suitable recorders; I found the WS-210S 2nd-hand & cheap. The unique bit is the Olympus telephone pickup TP-7. It will record with the pickup from any phone you use (eg payphone), and of course from its microphone. The lowest-quality audio (138 hours in 512k! - don't go overboard for massive memory) is 100% fine for understandable speech, voice-activated recording, and low microphone sensitivity for phone or close dictation, high for general conversation. Makes small (60kB/min) time-stamped WMA recordings with useless file names which I move and rename ASAP to a computer into which I have USB-plugged the recorder.
This is so much more versatile than mobile-only software, for about 37 GBP (but no need to buy new version when I change phone) and a small gadget and cable to carry, that I have happily given up the complications of software. I use the mobile phone (and other people's phones) without a headset, and the landline with a Plantronics over-ear headset.

PS problems with Chinese voice recorder: needed fiddly settings every time used, didn't start in right mode; voice-activated recording didn't work with compression, and uncompressed file was huge .WAV; compressed file format was non-standard .ACT - could play only with Windows software supplied, but no editing to trim silences; no timestamp.
Since there are recent comments on this thread....
Thus typing-in....ACR call recorded has worked for me without the speaker mode also..

Yes you can. It's called Voice Commander. It should be on by default. You can say stuff like "call john smith" or "dial 123-4567" pretty cool.

Yes, i have used vc with 3 different headsets. One moto, one jawboneII, one plantronics, and one stereo sony brt50 with a2dp. All worked well when pressing the command button on the hs. I've noticed it doesn't work quite well using phone for the command or to answer when cal comes in. The audio drops or doesn't connect.
Hmm, I have an old Moto H505 from work and not only do I not seem to be able to initiate a voice command using the headset, if I do initiate one using the phone I do not hear the response in the headset.

I had some issues with the stock VC on the ATT ROM. With ROMeOS though it doesn't come with VC (or at least not that I could find) so I added the latest PPC VC (1.6.19214) and it seems to work just fine now (including announcing calls via BT).
I thought that VC in general did not work with bluetooths. This is a limitation of VC not the phone or the bluetooth. On my old mogul, you could get it to initiate the command but not hear your response or confirmation.
Works fine for me with a Jabra BT-135 headset -- giving commands, getting feedback, and answering phone calls all work as expected. The only thing that doesn't work is announcing the name of the caller for incoming calls; all I get is a ring for that. (I have the stock AT&T ROM.)

That's OK, but what I really want is to record names for each PHONE# foreach contact, like "call Scott CELL" or "call Scott HOME" or "call Josh OFFICE" like I used to do with my HTC MDA w/ WinMo5. Can I do this? I've been searching the phone and forums and this site's postings too... any help?
If you can load the program - it is in the WM 6.0 ROM - it will work with bluetooth devices.

There's no need to do that with voice command. As long as your contacts are stored properly (i.e., a contact's mobile number is stored as mobile, their home number is stored as home, etc) you can just say something like "Call name on mobile", or "Call name at home".

Well, you can get rid of the "...", at least -- Voice Command, in my experience, seems to be pretty good at deciphering connected speech. And there's no need to invert the names, either (I don't even know if it would work that way). In any event, it doesn't seem a great hardship to say, in a normal speaking cadence, "Call John Doe at work."
You might want to have a look at the German ROM version as there is Cyberon Voice Command included which exactly does what you want. You can record voice commands for each phone number, program, ... on your own. I still think MS Voice Command is more preferable as you do not have the hassle to record voice commands for every contact and so on on your own.

Well, on my MS VC the ringer stuff does not work properly with the TP. And controlling the audio player is kinda funny as you have to pronounce the artist's, album's and song's names in a German way So Iron Maiden would have to be pronounced "Eeron My den"

Yes, this is a perfect example of the corporate 'give you *more* of what you don't want' that is difficult to avoid when you're innovative over customer-driven.
Voice Command looks like a very nice feature that will do a lot for me, especially the music options you listed (though I assume that requires I 'play nice' by using playlists, import music through Media Player). It's a large feature that I may become an expert in someday, but a busy week into using my new phone, I just want to dial my most used numbers while driving, and Voice Command simply does not recognise my commands 90% of the time. I have a pretty plain-jane American accent, but VC simply doesn't know what I'm saying.

That's strange; I have been really impressed,with 100% accuracy over the dozen or so times I've used it to call people and dial numbers since I got my Fuze. What is your setup? Are you using it over a Bluetooth headset or via the built-in microphone? (Not sure if that makes a difference, as I've not had any problems either way, but it might be something to try with your phone.) If using the built-in microphone, how far away are you holding the phone when you speak? Is Automatic Gain Control off? (The help file, I think it was, recommended not using AGC.)

I'm using a wired headset w/ inline mic, usually great sound quality on the other end (others listening to me) so I figured it should've worked fine. Come to think of it, back when I still used a HTC Wizard, I had AGC off too. Shoot, just realized, maybe the inline mic on my earbud is disabled, maybe I need to hold the phone up to my mouth?
Got so angry trying to get it to recognize me on the drive home, almost threw it out the window. "No, you stupd #%$& I said 'CALL! HOME! AT! HOME!' "
Also, I'm frustrated that my old Wizard 3.5mm headset jack (which played sounds in both ears: double mono for phone calls)---when I use it w/ my Fuze (with USB converter brick) it only plays phone calls AND MUSIC in 1 ear: very vexxing.
I want to be able to do voip through skype and I know I can add the iskoot number to myfaves and get free incoming but can I use it for free outgoing?
If this isn't possible how hard would it be to bring the VOIP anr SIP stack from another phone into the G1?
There are already 2 sip stacks for Android. Someone would just need to make a usable application for them.

I have not looked recently for user applications, but the sip stack is definitely already there.
I looked into those SIP stacks, and the first one listed has a User Agent in the code.
The problem is that the Android API has no way to stream sound from the mic, and can't seem to stream data from RAM to the audio output (so you can do, say, audio decompression of the RTP stream). Or at least, there isn't a straightforward apparent way to do it...
So until one can get audio into/out of memory (and not by writing to a file), this isn't going to be happening anytime soon, sadly. What may be interesting is to find out how these call recorders work...but again, I think that's all to a file.
What about StreamFurious? It streams shoutcast, so this must be possible in some way.
From network to speaker, it is possible...if you limit yourself to the codecs Android supports. However, VoIP uses some codecs that aren't supported by Opencore (at least, as best as I can tell)...so you'd have to code them yourself in Java (not hard for the PCM codecs, trickier for Speex and iLBC)...but then you need to play the uncompressed data from your app, and you can't seem to do that (unless you write it to a file and play that)
The recording side is worse, it needs to be recorded to a file. So making it a "phone" with the current API on Android is painful at best.

Integration within the OS and calling is working pretty good. The only downside is, that people can hear me, but I can't hear them :-/
I have no idea what I am doing. I spent 20 minutes messing around with sipdroid and I would guess about 19 of them were wasted. I will wait till this requires less setup (or its not 2am and I have a few extra brain cells to spare for figuring this out). Good to know its being worked on though.
I did test the SIP client, too.
First of all: thanks for this project. Together with sipgate.de and pbxes.org it works super well. I tested many calls and I can hear the other side and vice versa.
What did not work: entering directly sipgate.de in the SIP client (couldn't hear anything during a call in both directions).
What I hope will get better: better incoming call recognition (if device is in sleep mode the screen wouldn't turn on), and other small things (like to be able to turn off the client instead of turning off wireless options) and few other things which I don't remember now.
I am sure it will get better and better. So: THUMBS UP!
Was able to login to gizmo account but no audio. Needs option to turn sipdroid on/off, only way to do that right now is to turn off wifi or disable wifi in sipdroid.
Hi to make a long story short me and my now ex broke up but she turned off my cell phone the same day, Bi***, but i still have my phone and i had previusly set up a google voice account with my old cell number and i can make phone calls but i need to be able to recieve call as well but cant so any suggestions that are either free or really cheap would be great thanks for reading
T-mobile has some low cost plans, and currently offering a free SIM kit. You will need to unlock the phone but that's easy to do... Several threads here on how to do it.

You can receive calls on your google voice number if you have Talkatone or GrooveIP....both very easy to set up. A more complicated option is Sipdroid and similar programs

Alright i have set up a pbxes.org and sipdroid account i am able to send and recieve calls but after a minite or so i cant use my default dialer anymore just says "to make a call turn off airplane mode" did that and now it says "network unavailable" i want to use the default dialer any suggestions

It's much better than GrooveIP, Vonage, Talkatone, Pbxes.org, and everything else, especially those with the "one big green button" solution.
This method gives you HD Voice (G.722 codec), bettery battery life, and much better options for logging/blocking/recording. You can even set up hold music. Yup, I said hold music.
It used to be difficult to set up until I made it as clear as the nose on your face in the video tutorial (with actual commentary instead of techno music).
Spread the word if you do it and it works out for you. I believe everyone deserves high quality and limitless VoIP WiFi/4g calling.
If someone is using Google voice to connect it seems like the easier solution may actually be better in this case because you can't get that higher quality audio on Google voice. Every person I have phone discussions with utilizes phone numbers vice PBX accounts. I guess the people here aren't average. However, I wouldn't even think about going down a route that would take hours unless I could use the resulting features often. If I am wrong about being able to use the higher quality audio with Google voice, please correct me.
It would be nice to have an app that used Google voice for phone calls and SMS but also had call recording ability. I live in a state where I don't have to tell the other party I am recording them (for the purposes of legal record) unless I am being polite.
