I've tried that before, it doesn't work very well.
Download the system.img and boot.img from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589722
This is the base that I started with.
Then from there you can root the ROM image through an adb shell, install new apps, etc...
Start here for information:

Good luck and happy developing!

thank you very much
I will try it right now

Oh, and make sure you don't use Windows.
Install Linux on a spare computer, or use VirtualBox.

Will ruu_signed.nbh be suitable for traditional chinese?
Works perfect for me, now a way to rebuild my os with les software
With this method can someone build a french custumized ROM like the 62MB+ and 4MB PagePool one ?? It will be awesome !! Nice work r0p3!! It's workiiiiiiiiiiiiing !!
Works fine for me, thanks for the good guide
Greetings Denis
Now ... How to modify it ??
P.S : Can I include the extRom when i build the ROM with the OS?

Can I dump my touch with all installed programs, cooking a complete rom including installed programs?
No - that's not possible I Think.
But you can use sprite backup.
It worked perfectly for me when I flashed the ROM back.
But keep in mind that it only will work correctly on the same language of the ROMs.

I have Sprite Backup, but after flashing the device with the same rom, the restore didn't work, so I had to install the programs again.

Here is a trick I have used for quite some times with Sprite Backup 5.1
Sprite Backup version 5.1, version 6.02 is more fancy, 5.1 is good enough.
1. Do a full backup, make sure option Create Self Extract Exec
2. Hard reset (optional)
3. Flash new ROM
4. Run the backup file, make sure the Upgrade Mode Restore Option is Check.
5. Kneel down and pray (optional, or take a cup of coffee).
SKtools is handy.
Step 4 is most important. When it asks you for the upgrade fine, Click None. Minor cleanup unavoidable but heck a lot better than of re-install all the softwares.
Sometimes you may find the machine run slugglish by doing that. I am not sure why.
You may flash the new ROM, re-install all the softwares, see if the machine run faster, but few days later, you will feel it run slugglish. I am not sure why. (The laptop runs runs much faster than once I bought it and take it home and installed with applications.)
So I just keep buying new machines... hahaha
holy moly.
going great at 10% of flashing.
but i feel confident the tute was on the spot.
muchos gracias.
And yes you are right (you didn't say it but you must have thought it), I could have added it myself to WIKI. But just had to try it myself first off course.
And am i right in believing i could have allready replaced some of the graphical files in the dumped "ROM" directory?
Or is it to dangerous at this change because the file size needs to fit?

The audience is in Awe. It works.
Next step, getting familiar with hypercore kitchen.
Thanks for this tutorial.
Now i can safely backup my Dutch rom and test some custom ****..

Do NOT change files in the dump directory without proper tools!!!
You will mess up the ROM
When you have a look at the dump directory there are some info files with data for the places in the ROM which need to be recalculated.

Dumping Elf WM6 Italian version ROM
Before trying to put new Rom images, i would like to backup the original one.
I followed the (simply) tutorial, but i'm confused about this step:
"need the ruu_signed.nbh from valid update (extract with winrar)"
Which file do I need?
I don't understand why I need a valid ROM when I'm trying to dump a Rom from my Elf
Can I use an other language ROM version (English, Dutch....) or is needed only an Italian one?
Thx in adv and sorry for my poor english

you need this as a "shell" or "template" because the .nbh files are made in a way that cannot be recontructed (so far I understand - correct me if I'm wrong).
And yes you can use an ROM with another language. I took the Australian ROM - look at the first paragraph "files you need"
This is usually a .exe file that you can extract with winrar (or winzip maybe)
P.S.: your english is not so bad

Don't upload to XDA. I've seen some directories with full roms on FTP. But this is no longer allowed and files will be deleted.
XDA's allready been in trouble with MS about this. So either use third party file sharing or privatly owned FTP.
r0p3..
So to get the radio and SPL do i need to redo first extraction but then for these files? Or are these IPL/SPL?

I don't know yet - I still have to dig in the wiki about that.
It's very dangerous in this area - if you mess up IPL or SPL your baby is usually lost forever. I don't mind about those as long pof's USPL works beautiful.
Radio might be not so critical. But 2.97. is already available - so it would only be for the fun of it

Porting Hero HTC Flash player app to Magic

Is this possible?
I mean... we have the apk file, is it hard to convert it to Magic?
Try it pull and install id pull the HTC browser too tho as I believe it was made to work with that . I would try but I'm running hero so no need
Im getting "Browser could not be installed on this phone" when i try and execute the apk install.
but it seems to getting the correct data for "Allow this application to: network communication bla bla bla"
I am doing these attempts with the Rogers HERO ROM.
are you using the htc rogers magic? or the voda google magic because these have different boards so i would pinch the flash and browser from which ever build ya need, all this is only guess work btw but i have installed apks from other builds and work fine.
it should as its a system apk ask you if you want to go ahead with this and then restart the phone. do you have root with su on your phone?
I am using the voda google magic, and yes i have a rooted phone.
Can i have ur gtalk id so we can talk at it there realtime?
kewl you should have the same board as me then. ive uploaded the flash player and browser from the fatality hero rom , ive re-installed these to my own phone and still work as wanted so hopefully should be sweet for you

i have gtalk but never used it lol you can attempt if you like on [email protected]
Is this for the Vodafone magic (32b) ?
yea sorry its for the voda google magic 32b
Great thanks. Assume just need to adb push these files to the app_s directory?

Hi, I too need clarification on this process for installing the browser.apk and flashplayer.apk files on the phone. Do I just 'adb push (filename).apk' or is there a specific directory I need to push or install these to?
I have a 32B board and am using SPFfrance's euro 2.6 rooted ROM and am hoping this will work!! ??
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
As far as i know, it is not working on a stock ROM or any ROM other than the Hero, YET.
lol... 2 pages. Wow!
Well i just got my MAgic last week i had a g1 previous to that since it came out, so i have quite some experience with android already. And its just not gonna work (flash) by pulling apk and pushing them over to your phone? there are also frameworks and other stuff that should go along with it and even then it still wont work. There must be changes made as well in order to get it working with a specific rom./
Is this package for 32A, also?
can you give me the commands to install them?
thanks
NB: do you have hero phone.apk?

[ROM][32A RADIO 6.35] WG-Build Y-2.6 - 26/01/2010

All credit goes to other devs... I'm just combining other peoples works to make your lives easier (i.e. i'm making a VERY basic port and sharing it with everyone who doesn't know how )
I would like to thank sanpei and cursordroid for their work on the new radio.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated, I'm new to this but i will do my best to fix any problems you guys may have.
Prerequisites:
radio 6.35 (duh) w/ engineering spl 1.76.2007 --> instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
Original Link
Now without further ado...
WG-Build Y-2.6 Single File Update UPDATED LINK
Changes
-Now using cursordroid's kernel as sanpei's gave me issues with some games
-Using proper libgps.so --> it works (i think i got it searching didn't test it outside)
Features:
-so far nothing changed from the original WG rom other than the kernel to get it running, just a straightforward port... i might add things later view the original post for feature list and change log.
-haven't noticed any bugs in the short time i've been using it... enjoy
nice to see more ROMs coming up for the 6.35 radios. i will download and test this ASAP.
Looks like we're gonna have more ROMS based on the new radio soon
Testing it right now. So far so good.
Haven't checked everything though (wifi, bluetooth, GPS).
I didn't tried the original ROM but I like the bootscreen
Thanks for the port!

No Apps2sd?
Hey, just loaded the ROM, haven't really looked at anything yet, loaded ok. If was hoping for apps2sd, anyway to get this activated? I don't know much programming, I did notice the apps2sd script has a line basically saying not to activate if installing ROM on MT3G. Did i read this correctly, is there anything I can do do activate it?
Edit: ok, so I believe apps2sd is installed, looks like I have files both in data/app and system/sd/app, so I think apps2sd could have worked, just have to figure out where new programs go to install, and then hopefully i just need to get rid of the files in /data/app

I know the Magic doesn't really require apps2sd, I just find it makes things easier when backing up/restoring apps, and I have become obsessed with keeping my internal memory down (mostly because I am coming from a G1/Dream)
first thanks for the port, everything is working except GPS
anyone else????
gps works just fine for me
GPS does not work for me either. I believe this port suffers from the same problem as cursordroid's Magic Fender Edition.
It seems there are no GPS kernel drivers for 32a 6.35 radios and 1.6 builds.
hmmm... i'll look into the gps issues.. could be just a simple lib that needs to be changed.
I'm giving this ROM a whirl right now. I'll report back on GPS. So far everything else looks good.

haha thanks for porting it, I didn't realise there was a tool ... how does it work? I thought 32A needed different options in the kernel, does the ported version of the rom not use my kernel?
32A users may also want to disable the automatic swap (activated if there is a mountable swap partition on the sd card) .. disable it by deleting the script:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/etc/init.d/00enableswap

[KITCHEN] Basic ROM Kitchen for aspiring Dream cooks [PC/MAC]

Hi guys,
Over at the HTC Hero forum I have been developing a kitchen to help ordinary people learn how to build their own ROM. It allows you to do basic things such as rooting a shipped ROM, adding apps2sd, modifying the task killer memory threshold, etc.
The appropriate settings are now in place to make it work for the Dream.
Here is the link to the kitchen:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
Before you flash your new custom ROM made from this kitchen, please make a Nandroid backup first of your existing ROM!
Thank you, and enjoy!
Working so far on Ubuntu, figures I just learned how to use git and make my own EBI1 kernels 2 days ago, thanks for this. I'll let you know once I flash a rom how it goes.

Cool, thanks. I am most concerned about how the wireless tethering option will work on the Dream because it requires a kernel fix for Android 1.5 and 1.6. The kitchen is supposed to do that automatically but it will replace your existing kernel.
BTW looks like you are from my home town of Edmonton!
It's not booting, I used my own nan sys and boot img's, set up a working directory and then rebuilt, long time at rogers screen and then boot animation for a minute then a blank back-lit screen, I'll logcat and post it later, time for work.
Is this compatible with the EBI1 dream?

What is different about EBI1 from a kernel level? If all you did was extract the system and boot.img, and then build without modifying anything, then that should work.
EDIT: If this is a customized ROM (e.g. with custom kernel) then the update-script file under META-INF\.... may need some manual tweaking. The Option 1 in the menu is recommended only for stock ROMs, because this option creates a simple generic update-script file.
If you are indeed using a custom ROM then I'd try to get the original update.zip file of this ROM, which already has the correct update-script file. Just copy that update-script into your existing kitchen.
Or even simpler, just use the original update.zip file and run Option 11 instead of the Nandroid backup.

I am not familiar with all the different Dreams, but it will replace the kernel if you have a 1.5 or 1.6 ROM.
It works on my rogers dream, I took the original rom for the g1, set up a working directory, replaced the launcher, took out a few apps, replaced the boot.img and wlan.ko with the ebi1 compatible versions I compiled and put in my own prop files, booted right up, thanks for this. Can't test the tethering thing as it'll change the kernel on me.

I'm not sure exactly what the modified boot.img-kernel in the kitchen has, but I'm guessing it's a couple of networking-related variables that were changed. If your kernel has those modifications then maybe it will work. Doesn't hurt to try
Let me know if it works, then we can use your version for individuals who are cooking Rogers ROMs.
A question: Is it possible to tell that a ROM is for a Rogers Dream (ie. somewhere in the build.prop)? In that way, the script can automatically decide what action to take.

Just do a search in XDA for Mytouch/Magic shipped ROMs. Usually there are links to the original ROMs in the Wiki page for your device.

Let me know if it works, then we can use your version for individuals who are cooking Rogers ROMs.
A question: Is it possible to tell that a ROM is for a Rogers Dream (ie. somewhere in the build.prop)? In that way, the script can automatically decide what action to take.

I'll try it out tonight, the sources I used to compile were wes's and his kernel has tethering support unless I broke it, I've never used tethering before.

Tethering is actually useful even if you don't need it all the time, eg. if your desktop PC cannot access the internet or your wife is using an iPod touch to access the internet in a restaurant.
So do Rogers Dreams require a special kernel, due to the 911 fix? So I guess the stock ROM update has the proper kernel, but modifications like the wireless tether for a Rogers Dream would require a patched Rogers kernel.
