Hi guys,
Over at the HTC Hero forum I have been developing a kitchen to help ordinary people learn how to build their own ROM. It allows you to do basic things such as rooting a shipped ROM, adding apps2sd, modifying the task killer memory threshold, etc.
The appropriate settings are now in place to make it work for the Dream.
Here is the link to the kitchen:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
Before you flash your new custom ROM made from this kitchen, please make a Nandroid backup first of your existing ROM!
Thank you, and enjoy!
Working so far on Ubuntu, figures I just learned how to use git and make my own EBI1 kernels 2 days ago, thanks for this. I'll let you know once I flash a rom how it goes.

Cool, thanks. I am most concerned about how the wireless tethering option will work on the Dream because it requires a kernel fix for Android 1.5 and 1.6. The kitchen is supposed to do that automatically but it will replace your existing kernel.
BTW looks like you are from my home town of Edmonton!
It's not booting, I used my own nan sys and boot img's, set up a working directory and then rebuilt, long time at rogers screen and then boot animation for a minute then a blank back-lit screen, I'll logcat and post it later, time for work.
Is this compatible with the EBI1 dream?

I may need to go to EBI0 to test if it replaces the kernel?

What is different about EBI1 from a kernel level? If all you did was extract the system and boot.img, and then build without modifying anything, then that should work.
EDIT: If this is a customized ROM (e.g. with custom kernel) then the update-script file under META-INF\.... may need some manual tweaking. The Option 1 in the menu is recommended only for stock ROMs, because this option creates a simple generic update-script file.
If you are indeed using a custom ROM then I'd try to get the original update.zip file of this ROM, which already has the correct update-script file. Just copy that update-script into your existing kitchen.
Or even simpler, just use the original update.zip file and run Option 11 instead of the Nandroid backup.

I am not familiar with all the different Dreams, but it will replace the kernel if you have a 1.5 or 1.6 ROM.
It works on my rogers dream, I took the original rom for the g1, set up a working directory, replaced the launcher, took out a few apps, replaced the boot.img and wlan.ko with the ebi1 compatible versions I compiled and put in my own prop files, booted right up, thanks for this. Can't test the tethering thing as it'll change the kernel on me.

What would happen if I just replaced the wlan.ko and boot.img-kernel in the dream_1_6_update folder with my ebi1 versions? could I test out the add wireless tether option?

I'm not sure exactly what the modified boot.img-kernel in the kitchen has, but I'm guessing it's a couple of networking-related variables that were changed. If your kernel has those modifications then maybe it will work. Doesn't hurt to try
Let me know if it works, then we can use your version for individuals who are cooking Rogers ROMs.
A question: Is it possible to tell that a ROM is for a Rogers Dream (ie. somewhere in the build.prop)? In that way, the script can automatically decide what action to take.

I'll create a thread for this in the Magic forum so that people can post their feedback there. Thank you

Just do a search in XDA for Mytouch/Magic shipped ROMs. Usually there are links to the original ROMs in the Wiki page for your device.

Tethering is actually useful even if you don't need it all the time, eg. if your desktop PC cannot access the internet or your wife is using an iPod touch to access the internet in a restaurant.
So do Rogers Dreams require a special kernel, due to the 911 fix? So I guess the stock ROM update has the proper kernel, but modifications like the wireless tether for a Rogers Dream would require a patched Rogers kernel.

update 10/16/09 ------
Qteknology has got it booting to splash screen but its in a bootloop
this amazing progress
everything i do will be based off this work from here on out thans so much Qtek!
ill need to get some information on what exactly he changed but i know
modified build.prop
modified hw folder
modified bootscreen (tattoo one wouldnt play right)
still wont boot all the way waiting to work out a few things before i post a link i also wanna ask him if its ok for me to post a link
THIS BUILD WILL NOT BE FLASHABLE YET IT IS SPECIFICALLY FOR INPUT/Developement ONLY!
Code:

i am not responsible if you try to flash these roms
for any damage that may occur to your device
these are not finished and are not bootable
still in EARLY EARLY EARLY BETA!
This is about where im at right now
closed-10.07.09
Tattoo Only from the WWE 1.65.405.1 build
Merged lib and hw (for sensors) folders with 1.6 doughnut for magic 10/13/09 will try new lib folder idea tonight and report back with logcat and DDMS report
Specific items will be listed later today when i can think of everything
added some stuff in system/bin (super user access etc)
cyanogens 4.1.11.1 kernel and corresponding wlan.ko added (Thank you so much jubeh for the boot.img)
update-script should be super barebones... really just hoping for a boot right now

Update 10/07/09
so Jubeh might be my saviour He packed the Tattooboot.img with cyanogens kernel
A big thanks to: Jubeh(wouldve never got this far without his knowledge),Nk02(for dump used), Drizzy Drake Rogers(is my personal htc hero),Qteknology (you rock man), Jac, Haykuro, Cyanogen, ccyrowski,JF,twizzzzzzted and any others I forgot to mention you guys are great lets keep building a better bot
you cant mixe 2 different builds together, rosie is tied to many apps, so if you were to only try and port the rosie onto a hero build already out, then rosie wont load just your regular laucher!
mixing builds is bad, especially if they are odex!

I have a night job and I'm getting ready to sleep. Sorry I didn't reply to your last PMs, but the questions are a little involved and I'm very very sleepy. When I have time (maybe later today, or tomorrow, or could be the weekend) I'll try to get a very simple (no a2sd, no compcache, no nonsense, no nothing, just tattoo and root) build working so that people can take it and mod it as they wish. I won't promise anything though, I'm a known procrastinator.

Id feel alot more accomplished if i can make it work with a small ammount of direction (ill try not to ask REALLY stupid questions hahaha OMFG I BRICKED
coding makes all kinds of sense to me I jsut need to know what points where and where the system starts the read from
starts at kernel and kernel on firstboot compiles my libs and runs scripts once the environment is built from kernel loads framework and apps stuff like that
once that happens you have live system

i knew about the odex thing becuase the odex is SPECIFIC to the build correct? when you add it i think youll get a error like doesnt match stored signature no signature on file ignoring in logcat
i need a NON Odex'd hero like haykuro's and update it all with tattoo stuff and the newest hero apps to fill in where tattoo doesnt cut it
I know rosie is tied in with alot of stuff and when you just try to merge rosie it wont parse properly because it needs the sdk4 to parse the package
THEREFORE! haha i want to make basically 1.6 Rosie with hero apps filling in for the tattoo ones that i dont wanna edit all the drawables in
i want functionality of 1.6 speed of the dumbed down rosie for tattoo and apps from hero i know ill have to cook this and in no way am i asking someone to "just make update.zip so i can flash"
lets limit me to 1 n00b question a day and after a week or so of patience ill prolly have it done
Question of the day: Can I Un ODEX builds or do the ODEX's directly correspond with the apk and are necesary for the apk's functionality i know that dexopt will run at firstboot on odex'd builds but the odex's exist before the dexopt runs right?
yes you can unodex. http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/09/10/slay-those-pesky-odex-files/#more-153

ok so last night i compiled the two different ideas weve had
1) Mashed Tattoo's APP/framework and merged the lib folder with TwiztedZerox6.14
2)Tattoo Alone with Cyanogens kernel and bin xbin folders and some build.prop changes for LCD DPI density changed from 120 back to default
On test flash i get the same message from both update scripts
(the update scripts had been pulled from the latest cyanogen update to be used in my build)
problem line 64 Chown perm *some numbers* bin:reboot
on both update zips tried editing the update-script and it still has issues
any ideas anyone?

in /system/bin from system.img there is a toolbox symlink "reboot" ? if there is, you have to remove it (because all symlink must be create during installation, as write in update-script)
its actually easy to edit the script ... check every line and try to see! what it is doing , you shouldn need xbin at all, remove all lines about it for now, no busybox nothing
as nk02 said remove all links (do you use linux ?) and then your script hould copy system and data , make a symlink for app_s and change some permissisons that's it.
so clean upp the script , and make your own. I will pst one for you here , make sure you have all files in your system ...

thanks started using textpa and now my update scripts are fine got the hero+tatto mashup to boot but its giving me all kinds of odex issues
im gunna have to find a UN odex'd hero to mash it with and un odex the tattoo build
havent worked on the ONLY tattoo with cyanogens kernel yet i got busy and i dont have a tester phone just my mytouch and i cant go more than 3 hours with out being able to use it haha
no im not on a linux machine i am still getting comfortable with command line functions and have been doing nothing but reading the android developers page and anything linux related on the internet
my betas are uploading right now neither will boot one boots enough to get into logcat but because i mashed the odex'd builds together i know i know im a bum and i didnt wanna deodexarnt the whole thing (take time to do it right and never do it twice)
next on my list of things to try
get unodex'd hero build and unodex tattoo then mash
see if i cant just get straight tatoo to boot then trim the resolutions of the rom to fit on our 32b devices
any input is greatly appreciated

Help!
I am willing to help with the Deodex if I can, I already started doing something similar to you but against the latest Cyanogen experimental build which is already Donut.
I am trying to Deodex Tattoo but am struggling, I am trying to get my head round what we need to do to deodex it.
According to the readme of deodex you need to have the phone running the exact firmware you want to deodex (I don't have a Tatoo or know anybody who does), or use a CH Root environment to do it.
This is where I get stuck, are they on about a CH root environment on our phones or within my Unbuntu environment (it is not very clear)? Can somebody give me a clue or even better instructions on the CH root process required to use Deodex?
Thanks

take my tattoo only build unzip it and take the update script delete the line about system:xbin save and resign then flash this will load the android environment through cyanogens shell for the tattoo i just dont know if it will display anything on the phone itll probably have a bunch of errors in logcat
i just havent gotten this far yet because i dont have a phone that i can flash just to test stuff all i have is my mytouch and i cant afford to be without it for very long and i dont know how to boot custom roms on emulator nor do i think we can boot this due to htc parts missing from the SDK
next on my list to try....
*****************
-get virtualbox up and going and deodexarnt the tattoo build (i think itll boot enough to get dalvik manager to run so we can deodex it)
-once deodexed i would like to see if i can get this thing to boot standalone (if the standalone i have now will boot {not been able to test yet like ive said no device to test with} if the standalone is being a big pain in the [email protected]# and not booting properly or we have issues with screen size differences ill have to stop because my knowledge of these things is limited..)
we cant deodex tattoo without being booted into tattoo
so
oh well for that
lets work on getting original tattoo to boot so we can deodex and build off it
if anyone has started to do these things or is already in the process of doing these things please let me know

went through about 15 flashes last night
none booted
the furthest i got the logcat is posted on the OP
i have two more ideas but i need someone to pack my boot.img for me for one of them (i know i should have my own linux machine but im not about to download anything over 100 megs on my tether SLOW!)
and the other ill work on tonight and see if i cant get it to work
So I have a bootable Tattoo build. is that all you need? Different phone but I don't see why it matters. I can unodex but I don't see the point... Tattoo and Hero share a lot of apps and functionality. All I see are cosmetic changes, which I'm working on as well. But, if you tell me what to run I can have it posted within the hour.
I'm not sure what you're really trying to do by backporting to Cupcake based Hero. I can unpack the boot.img, unodex Tattoo, whatever but I don't see what you want to accomplish with this. I don't have your phone so I can't test whether the kernel would work if I mod boot.img for you but it doesn't sound hard. Got the tools in my PATH.
All credit goes to other devs... I'm just combining other peoples works to make your lives easier (i.e. i'm making a VERY basic port and sharing it with everyone who doesn't know how )
I would like to thank sanpei and cursordroid for their work on the new radio.

Changes
-Now using cursordroid's kernel as sanpei's gave me issues with some games
-Using proper libgps.so --> it works (i think i got it searching didn't test it outside)
Features:
-so far nothing changed from the original WG rom other than the kernel to get it running, just a straightforward port... i might add things later view the original post for feature list and change log.
-haven't noticed any bugs in the short time i've been using it... enjoy
nice to see more ROMs coming up for the 6.35 radios. i will download and test this ASAP.

No Apps2sd?
Hey, just loaded the ROM, haven't really looked at anything yet, loaded ok. If was hoping for apps2sd, anyway to get this activated? I don't know much programming, I did notice the apps2sd script has a line basically saying not to activate if installing ROM on MT3G. Did i read this correctly, is there anything I can do do activate it?
Edit: ok, so I believe apps2sd is installed, looks like I have files both in data/app and system/sd/app, so I think apps2sd could have worked, just have to figure out where new programs go to install, and then hopefully i just need to get rid of the files in /data/app

I know the Magic doesn't really require apps2sd, I just find it makes things easier when backing up/restoring apps, and I have become obsessed with keeping my internal memory down (mostly because I am coming from a G1/Dream)
first thanks for the port, everything is working except GPS
anyone else????
gps works just fine for me
GPS does not work for me either. I believe this port suffers from the same problem as cursordroid's Magic Fender Edition.
It seems there are no GPS kernel drivers for 32a 6.35 radios and 1.6 builds.
hmmm... i'll look into the gps issues.. could be just a simple lib that needs to be changed.
I'm giving this ROM a whirl right now. I'll report back on GPS. So far everything else looks good.
Hey all, this is a patch that will change out the kernel for King's SenseHybrid 2.3. I use this rom pretty much daily. It is a cupcake based hero, just this update speeds up the performance a bit.
Instructions:

- Flash this update immediately after flashing King's rom
- Reboot and enjoy!
ChangeLog:

Virtual mem settings adjusted
proc_cpu_en=0 # to save battery life
Updates Kernel to CM 4.2.15.1
Removes:
Meebo
HeroLED
AKNotepad

Adds:
Free Advanced Task Manager (Useful)
****I just posted a 10MB ram hack version in the thread below. It uses CM 4.2.14.1 with CFS instead.****
If you like it, then great! I've been experimenting with using different kernels on different people's roms. I'm new to it, but if anyone has any tips, they are greatly appreciated.

PS. PLEASE DO NOT ASK ABOUT BT! IF YOU HAVE READ ANYTHING ON THIS SITE CONCERNING HERO ROMS ON A G1/DREAM THEN YOU WOULD KNOW BETTER AND WOULDN'T RISK BEING FLAMED.
Sounds good I was going to flash the sensehybrid soon anyways so this sounds perfect.

Here is another one that you can flash immediately after flashing king's 2.3. This uses the 4.2.14.1 CM kernel and the CFS 10MB ram hack. I absolutely hate BFS on G1/Dreams! Anyways, this one should run faster. I would also look into the thread that has been posted recently about speeding up hero roms and change the line in your init.rc to keep rosie in memory. just copy the init.rc onto your sdcard and edit it with notepad++ (windows program, it is great!) and then copy it back to your root over the existing init.rc and reboot. (if this is complicated, then don't try it.)
Otherwise, Enjoy!!
will this work without an ext/swap partition?
Without ext partition...
Honestly, if you are using the Death SPL and you are running this with my ram hack, you should be ok. Unfortunately, the compcache on King's earlier roms are usually broken. I tried pushing ramzswap from the CM kernel and still no luck, but then again, I'm not as savy as some of the other dev's out there. You will just have to edit the user.conf after you finish flashing the two, you want to do the following:
First, before flashing you want to pull the user.conf from the system/bin/ directory in king's zip file. edit the user.conf using notepad++ in windows and change the linuxswap=1 to 0 so that it turns it off. then copy that file to your sdcard.
immediately after flashing the two files,
-go to console from the recovery and type the following
mv /sdcard/user.conf /system/bin/
reboot
this will disable the linuxswap and then you will be able to run the rom. But again it would be better with a swap partition.
Hope this helps.

Same here, WG is great. I tried the RH CFS patch, but I got an error while flashing it. Had to restore from switchrom.
where's the wg-kernel patch for 1.5 hero roms?
Also, does multitouch still work with THIS patch?
boot loop...
?
Chabsie, telling me u got a boot loop doesn't help me resolve the problem much. You must have DeathSPL for this rom, Must be full wipe, and EXT4 partition. If that doesn't help, please list the stats for your phone, which hack u are using and where your issue occurs.
Jcarrz, WG kernel version of this is released in another thread. It is on 2nd or third page, just search.
Thanks.

Just a question, since im not an expert. but how is this cupcake based hero, when CM 4.2.15.1 is donut based? Also thanks i will give it a try now.

HTC developed the sense UI and this port is from the HTC Hero or the earlier Droid Eris (Prior to upcoming update from Verizon to 2.1.) Both of those phones use Cupcake as the base and then Sense UI is just a pretty cover for it. The kernel I used is from CM's Donut based roms, which is more than compatable, but again, the framework and ramdisk and everything else reflects a 1.5 environment. Enjoy the patch.

Just go back into system menu and re-sync manually and give it a minute. It will work fine. I had that happen on one of the trials.

This is the Wes Garner Ramhack. It should be slightly faster. I think that you still need to have a partition though because of the apps to sd. You would have to do complete wipe for this one again.

Sorry for being vague. I had everything right except ext3 instead of ext4. I'm looking for some directions on how to upgrade. If you have any please let me know, thanks.
Please Read
This will not change anything on your phone that would prevent you from ever flashing a new rom or nandroiding back to a working one. Everything this update will do can completely be erased with a wipe or nandroid. Also flashing any rom, clean install or not, will preplace the boot.img this update.zip puts on your phone. So dont blame these downloads for your simple user errors of not being able to flash a new rom or nandroiding.
This is an overclocked kernel from toastcfh godmode .29 source. The kernel was actually pulled from Fresh Toast
This works on DamageControl and roms based off of his, it will not effect any of DC mods, including the Dconig app.
UPDATE
6/6/10- This should be working on the newest damagecontrol 2.09. Please report (if overclocking has worked in the past for you) if you have a problem on the newest release.

I made an attempt to get compcache to work, so it might or it might not. Someone with more experience might want to double check it.
Both include setcpu.txt for Setcpu OC app.. Select "custom" at the very bottom for device. Do not select hero. Or you can select "Auto Detect" at the top, this does not need the setcpu.txt.
*View attachment damage710v2.zip* THIS IS A TEST KERNEL FOR THE NEWEST DAMAGECONTROL 2.09.. It is the exact same as damage710 but with a newer ramdisk, this is in hope of fixing any problems anyone is having with 2.09 and OC kernel. There might not even be a difference in the new ramdisk between the old one. I didnt have time to check. Sooo ya.
*View attachment damage537.zip* 537mhz is the default.. scalable to 768 if you use an OC'ing app
*View attachment damage768.zip* 768mhz default clock speed -read below
*View attachment damage710.zip* 710mhz default clock speed -read below
Both can be scaled from 19.2 to 768mhz..
DAMAGE710--The damage710 will default 710mhz, you must use an OC app to scale it to 768. Use damage710 if your phone can not boot the 768mhz. And dont scale any higher then 710mhz or your phone might reboot.
DAMAGE768--If your phone can boot the 768mhz then either download will work. But if you dont want to use an OC'ing app then the damage768 will scale to 768mhz.
This IS a flashable update.zip.. This will only replace your boot.img of your phone. So it is not a full rom. This is applied on top of your rom.
ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE FLASHING.
You Do Not Need A Partition On Your Sdcard For Overclocking
THIS IS A MUST FOR SWAP/compcache
To get swap working, you must have an ext partition on your sdcard. This will format you sdcard erasing everything, so do the following. Back up everything from your sdcard to your computer(exp- In a folder on your desktop named Sdcard). In recovery, select partition sdcard, use all default values, 32mb swap, 512mb ext partition, the rest fat32. Then when its finished change ext2 to ext3. Then reboot the phone. And then move all the files you backed up to the computer back to your sdcard.
If thanking me for putting this together. You should also give an even bigger thanks to Toastcfh for this kernel.
Thanks also goes to flipzmode, cuz i pulled the kernel from his boot.img in fresh toast.
Also darchstar for the defaulting clock speed tip.

No.. this just adds overclocking and the few extra things that come along with it in the kernel. Has nothing to do with AOSP.

Excuse my ignorance on this topic.
But with Darchdroid, the issue was porting the Eris .29 Kernal to get a full hardware working AOSP Rom (I think) , so what is the difference?
My apologizes for taking up the space with my questions. Just a noob trying to get his facts straight.
If anyone wants to know how to do this, follow this guide starting at Step 8.
Essentially just extract the kernel you want from the right boot.img, extract the ramdisk from the other boot.img, then use mkbootfs and makebootimg to put them back together.
PM me if you need help.

I dont mind, ask anything here. Its how we learn
But that was the issue with all 2.1 roms. Toastchf cracked the code (in a way, not literally). And was able to give us a working source for .29 kernel. That kernel can then be used to work on any cdma hero 2.1 rom. But there are different things you have to do to get it to work on Darchdroid AOSP rom, he has already done that and its in his newest release. This one I posted above is just to work with damagecontrol roms or ones based off of it.
To get the AOSP dialer working you would have to have a rom based on AOSP, which darchdroid is the only rom so far. All the other roms are based on htc framework or just something different then AOSP. But im pretty sure theres AOSP dialers for damagecontrol. Go check the apps and themes section.
EDIT: the dialers are also completely separate from the kernel. Its based on what the rom is.

ive been running the 2.07.2.3333 with jit enabled for weeks now flawlessly..... will flashing this zip cause the jit to stop working... or will they work in unison like i want? if its a one or the other deal ill just keep jit... thanks for your help
I think I may be confused as to what exactly the kernel's role/job is, as well as to what the drivers role/function are.
a kernel is what tells the hardware how to interact with the software, and drivers are what tell the software how to interact with the hardware? Correct?
So, why would it take a different kernel to run a full AOSP ROM? Why not just write new drivers for the difference of hardware?
On another topic. The framework would be comparable to what CounterStike is to Half-Life. It still uses the underling software, but is modified and branded in its own way as to give such a "proprietary" feel?
I am so confused. (Google here I come)

JIT is controlled by other variables, namely build.prop and the dalvikvm.so library; it won't hinder those settings at all.

Haha well you are right sorta on what the kernel does, but all cdma htc heros use the same kernels but it depends on what android version you are using. 1.5 uses .27 kernel, and 2.1 can use a edited .27 kernel but something things wont work, like camera. What toast did was made his own .29 kernel based on other sources and what we already have then we use for our 2.1 roms. The 2.1 roms that come from sprint use a .29 kernel that work, but we cant edited anything within the kernel until they release the source to the kernel. You must have source to the kernel to be able to change anything with in it. You cant download a rom from xda and take the kernel out and change the files and put them back. You have to already have the files to the kernel, change what you want, make your own kernel and then put it on the rom. Cuz once you compile the kernel its not able to be opened back up.
In a boot.img there are 2 parts, the kernel and a ramdisk. The ramdisk CAN be opened back up and changed. But if its trying to call something within the kernel it has to already be there, since you cant add anything to it. If you start with all the kernel files and compile your own like what toast did, then you can add the special things like overclocking frequencies.
I know I really suck at explaining things. I only know the basics of how it all works.

Edit: wasn't even aware of the ROM kitchen before this.
Untested! I don't plan to provide support for these ports!
The reason I am publishing is from my recent trials of compiling my own kernel for new radio 32A Magic. I have learned a lot about what sanpei's kernel consists of and the similarities between our device and the GSM Hero. In particular, the only difference between our ROMs seems to be mainly just the kernel. Everything else is almost identical. As such I want the community to try to use a tested NR kernel, sanpei's 2.6.32.9, and apply it to some different ROMs and report back with results.
We don't need multiple threads of the same kernel on different ROMs. So I'm trying to consolidate some information here.
I can test it on my cousins phone probably this weekend as well. Hoping for some preliminary results till then.
sanpei2.6.32.9_villain_port
This is a repack of sanpei's kernel repacked via ordinary boot.img method, with init.hero.rc copied to init.sapphire.rc
Flash this after you flash Villain ROM:
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=680#p11789
2.1 Sense UI ROM
sanpei2.6.32.9_anykernel.zip
This is a repack of sanpei's kernel repacked via Koush Anykernel
The idea is that you can flash most ROMs from old radio using this port with some caveats.
READ THIS BEFORE YOU FLASH
You cannot use this port if:
1) You are NOT on a 6.35 series radio. This rules out any 32Bs or myTouch 1.2
2) the ROM uses squashfs anywhere (open up the update.zip of the ROM and look at /system/modules/lib and /system/
3) modules have special directory structure under /system/modules/lib (such as Cyanongenmod, which has modules under 2.6.xx.x-cyanogenmod instead of just 2.6.xx.x)
4) you use an ext4 apps2sd partition (it will simply not recognize it)
Explanations:
If the ROM uses squashfs, this kernel does not support it and you will need to fix those problems yourself.
There may be other issues involved when you use this kernel. It is recommended that you stick to the one that came with the ROM.
This rules out any Cyanogenmod because of the use of squashfs.
If missing init.sapphire.rc, copy the Hero one (if flashing a Hero ROM) using:
adb shell cp init.hero.rc init.sapphire.rc
Refer to the ROM Bible for reference:

FYI and FWIW a few weeks back there were a lot of 6.35 roms that were cooked and posted in this forum. They were all using the 2.6.32.9 kernel that Sanpei ported. That is, the boot.img-kernel was the same for all. The ramdisk was changed as you have done and the two were re-packed into the boot.img.
I have successfully applied this approach for maybe 3 or 4 different 1.6 roms and maybe 10 different 2.1 roms.

Must have hero recovery not patched recovery by cursor
Ahh...thougt cursors tweaked recovery didn't differ that much. *change recovery*
I am pretty sure the update script can also be modified. The assert statement can be removed and the rom should load fine on the Hero, Cursor and Amon Ra recoveries.
Ok, so now I've flashed VillainROM 6.1 with the sanpei2.6.32.9_villain_port and I can't say it's working especially well
First of all it doesn't ask me to enter the SIM card PIN when i boot, so the mobile connection is dead. Wifi and bluetooth is dead too. The camera flicker, and then fades to black, taking a pic resulted in reboot.

I completely missed that post actually . Plus it's now closed.
But I wanted to see specifically how well Hero ROMs translate over to Magic ROMs because of what I've been reading about the similar kernels. The thing is that while I know to copy over init.sapphire.rc to resolve some conflicts, I'm not sure what else is involved in porting a ROM right now to get it to work.
I'm new to porting ROMs.
Maybe mods ought to close this one then?
With Eris ports you will be missing SIM card features.
So with 2.6.32.9 bluetooth and wifi break? I was actually expecting bluetooth to work. What works?
I guess I'll do some reading again. But I haven't seen that information posted regarding how to resolve some of the issues of porting ROMs.
I was looking to figure out some of the incompatibility of the kernel I was compiling so I thought this might help
If the Hero ROMs worked well enough I had the idea of modifying the AnyKernel script to add cpio to recovery by updating busybox so that ROMs can be unpacked, modified and repacked all in recovery. It means unpacking the ramdisk gunzip, modifying it and repacking it, essentially adding one script to AnyKernel. But I guess they don't work that well so

A lot of the issues when porting are not related to the kernel but to the modules and lib files.
Try testing and hacking through some issues. For example, replace the wlan.ko file in the /system/lib/modules folder with one from a similar rom that is working on 32a same radio version. If you're porting Hero, then pull the wlan.ko from one of Capy's roms.
To get camera working, you'll need to replace the camera related libs in the in the /system/lib/ folder with ones from a similar rom that is working on 32a and so on.
Porting involves, at a minimum, replacing the boot.img-ramdisk and the files for stuff that is not compatible with the 32a hardware, radio version, etc.
Once you figure out these basics by experimenting with swapping out stuff with working pieces from a 32a compatible rom on the same radio version, you can then get into making updates to the files in the boot.img-ramdisk yourself, the update-script, the build.prop files, the init files in /system/etc/init.d, etc.

I think it's a good thread. Maybe some of the guys who have been porting roms will add their comments. I may be wrong but I don't there is a how to guide for porting.
anykernel is useful for a direct kernel port like cm5 to EABI1 on same rom scenarios, nice piece of coding by koush though, way many files to change, an update package would work on roms made for your device(proper assert) but most need the update script modified and at least wlan.ko changed.
