Anyone going to wait to to get a new phone until Windows Mobile 7 releases? - General Topics

December is when I can get my New Every Two Year discount. The problem is I am not that intested in any of the latest Phones. Do not want Storm 2, still not sure about Android, and the latest WM phones still have older tech inside. That HD2 looks nice but no QWERTY keyboard and not even rumored to be on Verizon. Palm Pre is tempting but I did not like the small physical keys.
I am not sure if I can wait long enough for WM7. I guess I could get the TP2 (just still not the big leap I want in tech) but then what if WM7 releases this Spring (latest rumor)? I am tempted to check out the new Android phone but not sure...
Anyone else in a similar position?

As I've posted in the X1 forum, I'm waiting for a Zune HD-type WM7 phone. My X1 will satisfy me until then.

Windows Mobile 6.5 May 11th Release date

I just saw this
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/17/windows-mobile-6-5-to-officially-launch-on-may-11/
Does anyone know how this release will work? will HTC pick this up and offer it as a upgrade on there recent devices like they did with WM6.1?
I really Hope this is the case.
From what I've heard about this, "release" only means the emulator images will be officially released, maybe along with a little showcase from Microsoft. Windows Mobile 6.5 shouldn't officially hit devices for a while after that (I'm guessing a month or two at the very least).
However, XDA's fine community of ROM chefs will have this running on every device long before HTC. And although Microsoft's official upgrade guidelines require only that the device have at least a 400MHz processor and 128MB RAM, the OEM has the final say in whether a device gets an official upgrade or not. HTC has only confirmed that the Touch Pro2 and Diamond2 will get official upgrades, but the MIX '09 conference had a Touch Pro running 6.5, so at least we know it can run it alright.
In my poor old Kaiser's case, I'm positive I won't get an official one; HTC wants me to buy a new device, not to keep using my old one. That doesn't make them any money. But like I said, the brilliant chefs will have this running on every un-upgraded eligible device in no time. But I think the answer is maybe/yes, in the sense that very recent HTC devices will get officially upgraded.

Which Phone should i get?

Yea i know there are alot of these threads so heres another.
My current phone the G1 is starting to break down so im looking for a new phone. I'm considering the Touch Pro2, Touch HD, Hero, and the Toshiba TG01. I have never used a windows mobile device before with the G1 being my first by HTC. I'm willing to try it as long as it has been prettied up some(TouchFlo or Stripes).
If you have either the Touch Pro2 or the Touch HD can you give me your experiences with them.
HTC in my experience is awefull build quality. After owning four diferent models I have vowed never to own one again. Shame really, apart from the poor camera selection they are designed really well ..... just a shame they fall to bits.
Out of your list, would have to be TG01.
Have you looked at the new Omnia II's? (not the Omnia HD) Theres a full on Iphone/HD lookie-likely and two keyboard models, one a TP2 type and one a blackberry type.
Don't forget the Acer M900 (which is what I currently use) and the more pocket friendly F900.
Touch Pro 2 definetly
Because keyboard is a must for me!

I had windows mobile and even though preference is a matter of perspective.... windows might be a step in the wrong direction. Back when I had it windows was ahead of its time... but now it seems like its standing still ... like its been stagnant for the last 3 yrs I haven't seen any major differences...from android to winmo is going Back to resistive touch screens... with not so finger friendly gestures because the screens tend to not pick up on the motion... I would really love to see MS step it up and release a new os or 7.0 which I hope makes a major difference. Dont get me wrong for business i would only use winmo or BB... but at this point Android just seems like a wiser choice... its not an ancient OS that will probably bore you quickly. All the phones sound great ... if you want break down and comparisons then go to infosyncworld.com ... they rate the phones for you.
As somebody who's an advocate of Windows Mobile, my honest opinion is that now isn't a good time to buy a WinMo phone at all, especially not for the first time. The only people I would recommend the current batch of WM phones to are people who already use WM, don't want to learn a different system, and REALLY need a new device.
Here's why: Windows Mobile 6 has a real learning curve, and coming from Android you're probably going to find yourself frustrated at a lot of the inconsistencies and complications. Further, WM7 is already on the horizon and I think we'll be getting our first real peeks at it before the year is out. It should be a massive, fundamental overhaul to the way WM works. There's a lot of unanswered questions right now, ESPECIALLY whether WM7 apps will work on WM6 devices and whether it will be possible to upgrade any current WM6 or 6.5 devices to 7. If not, it's possible that application support for WM6 devices might grind to a halt within a year.
If I were in your boots, I'd try to hold on to that G1 as long as you can. By October or November, I think we'll have a better view of the future of WM and it'll be easier to see whether WM will serve your needs going forward.
Now, all this is completely moot if you're rolling in enough dough to just buy a new phone whenever you feel like it. If so, feel free to buy whatever you like.
Wouldn't all of these phones be able to upgrade to winmo 7 anyway. I really dont care about having to learn how to use windows mobile. Im more interested in the devices themself. My main concern is switching to a device with out a keyboard.

Well, that's the problem: we just don't know yet. A lot of people here seem to take it for granted that WM7 will be as "open" as WM6 in terms of porting and the like, but comments from MS make me a lot less confident -- it sounds like WM7 might have much more specific hardware requirements that will keep it from being run on older models. It's POSSIBLE WM7 will be able to be put on, say, a Touch Pro 2, but it's not a foregone conclusion.
All signs point to WM7 being a major upgrade (keep in mind that WM7 has been in development since 6.1 dropped if not longer), and I think it's going to be really disappointing to be stuck with 6.5 once 7 hits.
But if you're looking to roll the dice, the Touch Pro 2 looks like a great phone UNLESS you want to use it as a media player. Lack of a 3.5mm jack is a serious weakness there.
yea the 3.5mm jack is a necessity b/c i planned on getting the Motorola S9s or something along that line to use because all of those except the hero are huge or heavy
I personally don’t believe that WM7 will be ready early 2010. It might take until 2011 that we see any WM7device.
TP2 seams currently best HTC choice if you need keyboard. However frankly speaking after having 2 HTC devices (Hermes and Kaiser) with slide keyboards I am not very confident about the durability (quality) of HTC hardware. Both of the devices had after short time issues with the rails and tilt mechanism.
Just recently I went to a shop to have look on the TP2 and the keyboard rails and the tilt seams same crap as previous devices. You can also read many complain in the TP2 section about screen wobbling. Touch HD has a very nice large screen (love large screens) but it is 1 year old technology and performance wise it did not satisfied many people. Furthermore as you are from USA you would need Australian version to able to use in American 3G. But the Device cost still after 1 year some 800-900$
My personal favoured are currently the Samsung Omnia II/i800 and Samsung Omnia II pro (b7610) Specs on the paper and the current reviews are indicating that those are under best devices on the market. Furthermore Samsung has almost entirely covered with additional software the aged WinMo operation platform. Further positive point is the Price. Both Samsung devices are about 100-200 USD cheaper then HTC devices even though they have better CPU; Camera etc.
I agree with Bulldog -- the Omnia II devices look really excellent. I like the design of the TP2 better, but I trust Samsung's build quality more and, feature-wise, it's fantastic.
Yes but you have to add that with omnia or any other you´ll not have the support of this great site!
That for me is an added value to consider before buying

Yes you do. This site offers Winmob o/s and Winmob App support to all. If you want cooked roms, look no further than omnia.modaco.com where there are plenty! My Omnia (original one) is currently running a great cooked rom of WM 6.5
Lets also not forget the AMOLED screen either on the new Omnias. I really regret buying my Acer M900, not because its crap - its not - but the new Samsungs look simply stunning. And if you factor in the success of the Omnia, widely regarded as the best Winmob all-rounder, the new Omnias should be spanking!

Shall i buy tp2 or wait for something else like omnia

I have tp and used to change my phone every year by selling old one to get some money towards new one but this year i didn't go for tp2 just for one reason, lack of dpad.
I was waiting for omnia pro but since bad reviews come out especially interface lag, i started to thing shall i wait for it?
I am a clean wm interface fun, i get ridoff all customization by htc or another company (and i hate the new look of wm6.5 )
What shall i do?
You could always wait and see how the Nvidia Tegra-based devices are, but they might not be out for a while.

[Q] Buy now or wait

I am planning to buy hd7s should I buy now or wait for new devices with better hardware
Thanks in advance
I think it's a good time to buy a wp7, mango comming out (soon) And new hardware hmmmmm I think there will be some phones with a qwerty keyboard but thats it no big hardware upgrades
better wait
IMO, it is better to wait until mango comes out and some more phones with better hardware. Though WP7 is good enough, it is still yet to get so many features. Being Mango the biggest update, we need to see how much level , does it take the OS. And regarding hardware, all WP phones are just as per minimum hardware requirements by MS and no phone yet which makes you say WOW.
I own focus now and i do like it.
Currently my plan is to wait until Mango and possibly any new phones and take the call b/w a WP7 and iPhone 5.

Will it support 3G in India? Nokia has plans for WP7 in India. I will say wait and see what they have to offer.
It is good to wait...most probably the new mango device will be come out during september or october,by ZTE....if you want go for nokia, you may have to wait until end of this year...
I'm pretty sure new devices will have a big difference with current devices, don't ever buy the device now, because they still using qualcomm 1st gen 1ghz snapdragon processor.
Furthermore, new devices most probably will be equipped with front facing camera,Gyroscope, better processor, better camera, higher ram, better screen and etc...so it is good to wait since it is not too long from now.
Don't choose the way like me,feel regret to be the first adopter of WP7,software flaws can be fixed...but hardware never...think twice
You can always wait my friend, there'll be always new better hardware.
but now, (at least here in europe) WP7 is an epic fail, and they are cleaning the stocks of WP7 phones. I got mine operator free (LG) for 199€ some months ago, it was more than 400€ worth, some had something like 640€ price (maybe due the 16gb storage). I wanted the Trophy for 149€, but it was actually out of stock.
Maybe they got remplaced by some new Android Galaxys clones.
If you wait until mango, maybe the prices will rise again (althoug I don't think so)
I read somewere that the WP7 operating system doesn't support dual core.
If its right, than I think there won't be better hardware until WP8 or Windows 8
If you buy right now a tegra phone, maybe you'll regret it, because news are coming, with 3DS-like screens, higher res displays, Windows 8 based phones and on and on...
You'll wait forever.
The only thing to do, is what I did, get a WP7 as cheap as possible, and hope that mango will bring some new features, and that our phone will be W8 upgradable...
yea, somehow agree with you...buy the phone as cheap as possible...because you might just want to try out the whole new OS,but it does not means it works perfectly for you.
Remember,is buy the phone at a cheap price,not sign a f**king cheap contract,never sign a contract.
If you want something last long,I reckon samsung galaxy s 2,its product life at least 1 or 2 years.Just like galaxy s
don't wait
buy an android I was once a windows mobile guy, android is better and there is more device to pick from. Microsoft mess up big time with this one.
thanks
Thanks everyone for your replies I think it makes sense to wait till September
What Im doing is getting a new contract and getting S 2 then im going to sell it when nokia releases their wp7 device and buy it pay as you go. I make actully make money if my contract is cheap. However I like to change my device every few months.
Saved me from asking the same question. My contract has just run out and I have switched to a sim only deal. Still very happy with my Hd2.
I so badly wanted the HD7 bu have now decided to wait until I see what happens over next few months Instead of getting bogged down with a long contract now.

[Q] Apollo?

Will anyone be supporting the htc arrive to possibly build an Apollo rom once the code is released so we can get even a small taste of the windows phone 8 magic?
With XDA it seems almost anything is possible but I certainly wouldnt hold my breath, At this point Im more wondering whether or not the Arrive will get 7.8. Its also confounding that sprint seems to be the only of the "big 4" carriers that havent committed to wp8.
Agreed, I'd love to see another windows phone on the sprint network, especially a wp8 with support for lte
I think personally when WP8 comes out I will just buy the first one with a proper keyboard. I haven't been in a situation where I've not wanted another smartphone in a long time, but unfortunately I just use it so much that my 7 Pro isn't going to last much past the end of the year I fear...
