[please suggest model]Going to purchase new HTC phone for experiments - General Topics

HI All,
I m going to have preowned HTC mobile, just for the experimenting purpose.
I m having HTC Elf, but all all contact and application are in it, and I cant take risk to be cut via communication medium,. so after a long analysis of my budget planner, I m agree that I can go for a prewoned HTC mobile, but which one should I go for, if I am just wanna do all these experiments including porting of android to the device.
Please suggest for which model i should go if we are keeping our range in economy.
Thanks a lot .

You might try the Kaiser, it's a cool device to have. And they've already gotten Android running almost fully. They're attempting to get the camera working, which is the last major piece of hardware that doesn't work right. Plus, you can get a Kaiser for cheap these days.
And please don't post identical threads intentionally, it clutters up the forum and is against the XDA-Developer rules.

Are you planning to get it on Ebay?

I got a HTC BlueAngel for testing purposes a year ago and was glad I did. It was $45, worked perfectly, and came with a dock. Although the keyboard kinda sucks. I would agree with DaveTheTytnIIGuy, the Kaiser is cool, and it isn't much more and is more functional.

Guys are you serious? You really purchase a separate device for "experimenting"?
What exactly do you experiment on the second device that you can't do on the first?

Rom flashing addiction?

Ok I signed up for this forum a little while ago but just started posting since i never had anything to say before but I feel that enough time has passed and I have done some reading where I might be able to say something that makes some sense.
Here is the problem, I have a ATT 8125 and I wanted to throw it away when the ATT 8525 came out but I did not falter then when the ATT 8925/Tilt came out I still didn't falter and I was so close with the announcement of the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro.
I decided to do some research about upgrades and here I am. I used to be a motorola fanatic back in the day but now HTC is my new home.
I did 2 days of reading with very little sleep before I attempted to upgrade my phone. The first flash went well and i had new features. Then I saw that there was another more recent flash with other features so I carefully re-flashed. One week later I have re-flashed 5 times with 5 different roms. I have a feeling that this isn't the end of this.
The only thing that is a problem is that my battery doesn't last anywhere nearly as long as it used to but my research shows that the reason is because now I have trouble putting the phone down.
So as it stands I could care less about getting the new HTC Diamond until the price drops significantly or they are giving them away with a plan upgrade but by then i'm sure HTC will have some new ground breaking technology.
So at the end of my rant and rave I find myself constantly checking the Wizard rom section to see if anything new has been cooked up by these awesome chefs. I hope the XDA forum doesn't burn into my lcd monitor.
Aah! Another flash-o-holic...
Welcome to the club!
This should however probably be in off topic
My mistake
I was contemplating posting in off-topic but it is technically phone related so I was torn as to where to post so i just decided to put it here. If its in the wrong section a mod could kindly move it to where it belongs.
I just wanted to share how much happiness this forum has brought to me and a couple friends that I have helped see that they are in the matrix.
It's a mods call on that...
For me, the flashing and the fun is one of the main things about WM for me... That's why I could never go for just an iPhone!

Polaris vs. Samsung Omnia (i900)

This is not so much to learn the comparison because I have did the research. But i'm hoping to get advise from the good people on the forum, whereas I rely on you guys and girls sound opinion. Thanks
Which one would you recommend? Both are looking excellent. I'm close to the amount needed to get one. With all the activity on the Polaris....I have leaned toward this....but I just discovered the Samsung Omnia.
I'm in the US though and both are not available here, so i have to import it.
Thank you for your reply in advance!!!
Hello Kenjari,
I do not own samsung device, but week before I have decided to buy polaris.
If I would not found this forum, I will probably be very unhappy customer of HTC.
I had several issues with Polaris before flashing official rom.
- reactions of device were quite slow (in comparison with unofficial rom - now its okay for me)
- gsm signal was horrible. Often I was without service even my ordinary cell phone was showing full signal strength. Again, after flashing radio everithing is okay.
So for me, if I will not flash my device, it would be complete useless.
But again, now I am quite happy
Thanks nikomach for your insight because i read by a reviewer that right out of the box it was a good device. Of course, i havent experience to many official ROMS right out of the box that were good.
Thanks again.
Please if anyone else have insight please post.
The Crusie is a triband-3G and quadband GSM. I believe the Omnia doesn't cover all the bands for 3G. You should check that the 3G band that it has covers the one for your carrier, but I doubt it. That's the main drawback to the Omnia, other than that it looks like a solid device.
By the way here's a good thread comparing the Diamond with the Omnia:
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_touch_diamond_vs_samsung_i900_omnia-review-262.php
I know you were asking about the Cruise vs Omnia but this article should still give you good insight.
Thanks hambola. This provided some good details on the Samsung i900. I will check if the future tmobile 3G will work with that device.
Good link!!!
Anymore opinions. This is really helping out!
Any other lasting opinions?
What about the Touchwiz GUI on the Samsung against the TouchFlo 3d Cruise?
Difficult choice!
I saw the video of the user interface of the Omnia and i think it's simply amazing!!
Besides that i think the Polaris is a much powerfull device.
The connectivity is simply the best, you have it all in just one light device.
I think i've read somewere that the Omnia doesn't have a stylus (don't no for sure), that being true i think it's a major problem. To work with some programs you need a stylus.
The Polaris can be costumized to be finger friendly or not, it's just your choice!
The biggest problem in the Polaris is the famous "driver issue", and that only makes me spend more time here at XDA!
In the end it's all up to you to make the difficult choice, they are great devices.
Good shoping!
Thanks HRQ.SLV. You are absolutely correct. The samsung ships with a stylus but its not connected to the devices. It simply just hangs by a string on the device.
The Cruise simply seems to be more versatile then the Omnia...offering stylus navigation or finger. But that Touchwiz...as new as it is.....seems impressive for a QVGA device!!!!
Whats up with the driver issue?
I have been looking around these threads lately trying to see the development of this device. The activity is great.
So far I feel informed. My only question is whether I should use the 2 in 1 unlocker....or just the simple Hard spl unlocker? ...if I purchase an unlock Cruise.
Thanks again buddy!!!!
One more question about this.
I have look online for the Cruise. I see prices ranging from $340.00 to $620.00. Why such a range in price? How come there isnt a consistent price for it?
If I go for the cheaper deal...does that mean the quality of the device will lower? Will it be used or something? I'm just curious!!
the lower the price usually means it's used. i'm selling mine and have sent you a detailed PM.
About hard.spl
I bought unlocked device too and had used Hard.SPL
Every flashing works just like charm
Price could depend whether navigation software and memory card are included in package.
Mine arrived with TomTom (useless for me) and without any memory card.
TomTom was soon officially replaced by iGO 2006 free of charge.
Touchwiz
Hey Kenjari, great news:
twolf is making a today plugin that looks just like Touchwiz!
You can take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2550969#post2550969
If you decide for the Polaris it seems that you will have the possibility of having a similar look.
I'm anxious to try it out myself!
copualt3 thanks for the offer. just pm you back.
nikomach cool, so i will just use the Hard spl....thats all I need. thanx again buddy.
Bodisson I checked out one site and called to verify and they say its brand new, i checked the other site out and called and they said its brand new. No memory cards and same app Tom Tom on both. Yet there were a $200. difference. (The good think about the second site is that he told me what I should be paying for the polaris....and it was the amount of the first site )
I just dont want to be purchasing some used dud because I'm finding the best deal. I'm pushing for brand new.
HRQ.SLV, I heavily leaning toward the polaris now. I hope twolf perfects what he is doing....I have used some of his work and it works great. Thanks for the link.
Well everyone!!!! I truly appreciate your opinions and thoughts plus your resources. My choice is to come home to the Polaris. Its obvious I will be getting a better device for my buck. More versatility, and options. Also, the support of a community is needed with these devices....and this forum is that added support that money cant buy. I look forward to joining the family real soon.
Thanks again for this supportive community.
Okay, I think I should post this just to be on the safe side.
After searching for a Polaris I found one at website A. Website B was out of my budget. After great feedback from buddies at xda-developers, my preference examined, and checking my wallet, I decided to make the good investment and purchase it.
I ordered it from website A for 368.99 this past Sunday, and ignored website B. I just checked back on website A, and the price has shot up to Website B. What just happened?
I checked thoroughly, it didnt say any where that it was used, refurbished, or anything. I also took the liberty to email support and ask why they had such a deal on a brand new device, they replied:
Dear Customer,
Thank you for your interest in our products.
All devices and accessories offered by *##$)# are brand new and come in their manufacturer's original packaging. All phones offered are unlocked. We do sell used and refurbished products, but they are always noted clearly on the product page.
We are able to offer the prices we do because we seek out the best most efficient ways to bring these products to our customers.
If you have any other questions please contact us.
Kind Regards,
Its set to be delivered tomorrow. What did I just order? Why in the hell did the price go up right after I ordered my phone?
Thanks buddies.
I hope when ever it arrives I'm not in for some suprise.

Maybe they have discoverd that there will be a WM6.1 release for Polaris in September!
Or they just read this thread and learned that it's a great device!
That could be!!
Okay folks. I have just recieved my Polaris. I'm not sure what to look for as far as it been new or used.
First, it has the touchflo sticker on top of the phone. But I can see some finger smudge or something on sticker. I'm observing the protective screen and it looks a little on the scratched side, a few marks here and there.
It seems to have everything in the box, plus a 1gb sd card. Does that come with all Polaris's?
...............
Well after turning it on. Reveiwing the device, unpacking the accesories and stuff, I have come to two conclusions: 1. Either the website had the price wrong and I fortunately got a brand new everything in the box, Polaris for almost three hundred dollars cheaper then 'common price'. 2. I manage to buy a "un-stated" used Polaris that look so damn new that it would fool the makers .
All in all, I'm glad i have one. I'm glad I had those here to help me make this decision. And so far, I'm content with what I have.
Kenjari
BTW....After two hours of playing with it, this ROM is a pretty damn good 'official' ROM. Much better then the Advantage ship ROM.
Are there any better ROM's out there that beats the standard shipped ROM?
came across this thread late
I own a TC since July and my husband just got his Omnia about 4 days ago. in my own opinion, the device already differs a lot in specification. so if you ask which device is good or better suited for you, you have to know what you will do with the device. I uses my husband's Omnia 2 times and finding that the "process" of setting up the device is kind of confusing compared to the easiness of setting up the TC. but if you want a camera with a big megapixel count, an iPhone like features (plus the look), Omnia is for you. for me, a regular web browser, the TC is enough for now. was wanting Raphael but the price tag is out of my reach
oh, and for the US, with Omnia, you can't get the ATT's 3G because the Omnia's 3G HSDPA band is only 2100MHz. the same case for my husband's Nokia N95 ...my TC and Sony Ericsson K850 works fine with ATT's 3G.

HTC threatens handset hackers with legal action

MobileCrunch are reporting that HTC threatens handset hackers with legal action for distributing ROMs.
http://ongoingissues.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/htc-threatens-handset-hackers-with-legal-action/
maybe we, the community should build a list of user, a signature of opposing people to the closure of the site. stating that the use of the ROMs is for the purpose of cooking our own ROMs and increase the usability, performance, and desirability of the HTC handsets.
Maybe HTC need to be made aware of how much their customer base relys on ROMs for development of the HTC Handsets, and possibly go as far as to list who wouldn't buy a handset without access to other ROMs.
If Froyo doesn't come to the Desire, I WILL be installing a modified ROM regardless of HTCs feelings, and if this becomes impossible, I WILL be changing to a different brand and boycott HTC from then on. I feel very strongly about the users right to modify their phone in any way they see fit.
I dont even use the roms but i appreciate the work and effort put into them on the chance that i might use them. I also love HTC hardware because of the huge communities developed and bought my Touch Pro 2 based on the outside support that exists and if it were to get taken down by HTC i would second guess my next purchase of a Touch Pro 3 (i know it doesnt exist but something along the lines).
And as far as recommendations of hardware this site alone has swayed alot of coworkers into buying HTC hardware knowing they can tweak there purchase if the need arises.
As a matter of fact, I am now using the HTC support contact form to tell them how wrong they are in promoting this action.
The main reason because of which I didn't buy a iloserphone but chose a WM device is that I can play with it as much as I want.
In that letter it also specifically says "...or of all infringing works derived from the Intellectual Property", which means basically CUSTOM roms, the ones we're all using.
First comes shipped-roms.com, then will be the turn of XDA which hosts links to said custom roms and/or stock roms, same goes for htcpedia and everything else.
If they want to shut themselves down by making their users hate their devices, their choice, but probably we ought to let them know they're just being stupid.
Here's the message I sent them via their website, I encourage you to write them in the big numbers.
Hi.
I am the happy owner of a HD2, and I really am satisfied this device. One of the reasons I am satisfied is because of its hardware specs, the other maybe more important one is that I can actually change the way it works to perfectly suit my needs. Otherwise, I could very well dump it for an iphone.
Now, I know that the person reading this message will be a support employee, and by no means anyone who actually makes the decisions, yet I stringly encourage you to forward this mail to the upper levels.
I just learned that HTC sent a C&D letter to shipped-roms.com.
I know the legal mumbo-jumbo HTC is all about on that decision and I don't need any of that.
I also know another thing: excluding the people who buy your devices just because they were bundled with some dataplan by some carrier, and have no clue how to really use them other than as simple phones, there is a LARGE part of people, including myself, who buy your devices because they like the way they can be customized and how they can be made so much more powerful than what they came out of the store.
If you start acting against websites that allow us "power users" to get the most out of our phones, then it's like you're acting against your customers, and that is a very silly thing.
I can easily see how this kind of action could be taken further, against other leading community websites dedicated to your devices.
If and when you will do that, you will repay the dedication of your customers with legal threats, and you will instantly lose the interest in your products by the same people that now love them for the reasons I explained in this letter.
Please think carefully about it.

Thanks! I'm doing the same right now. Apple is not a loser in the game, they dont shut down websites of so-called "hackers" who tweak, crack and write programs which jailbreak their iPhone, and they could just do it, they have plenty of reason to do it BUT only one NOT to do it: $!
I told you, Apple is not so stupid... unlike HTC who shoots itself in the head!(hoping the damages will be soft?) Really silly...
Edit: here's mine:
It recently came to my knowledge that HTC sent a C&D letter to the website shipped-roms.com and if this is true, and you are serious about it, please do re-consider your decision. As a proud owner of an UNBRANDED HTC HD2, HTC BLACKSTONE AND HTC DIAMOND 2, I am asking you to not bother the core of your business: without the shipped roms and the subsequent custom roms from it, I, just like hundreds of thousands of HTC owners around the world (just look at the membership of various forums offering custom roms), would not have bought an HTC device. Why we did buy it was the possibility to modify it to fit our needs, this includes by the means of custom roms too, but not only. If you take this from us, you're left with the "carriers dependant" customers who are, by far, the minority of your customers. If you're serious in taking down websites that make us buy your devices, you will have to face the consequences because without shipped rom, we will just jump ship! As you already know, the competition is tough so you better think this legal action twice if you don't want the value of your shares to melt like snow at the beginning of spring.
I have no words about what HTC is doing. I totally agree with ephestione, and if xda-developers did not exist (or any other similar forum), I would not have an WM Smartphone, as the stock ROMs are normally slow, many times out dated, and not suited for my needs.
I hope that HTC understands that sites like these are the BEST PUBLICITY that they can get fro their devices. You have people working for FREE to make the device better, what else can they ask for?
Instead of promoting, cooperating with the main chefs, and using it to their advantage, they prefer to drag them to the court, and shut them down!!!!
They already void your guarantee when you flash a custom ROM, so I can't see how initiatives like this can cost them more money.
I hope they realize that soon, and save their faces by gracefully changing their position.
I do not say, approve, but at least look the other way
I hope more people will join this cause.
Android is opensource so remove all htc apps in ROM and host htc apps @ mediafire
I Support you if its possible. How about a open letter to htc in Taiwan? I can write a letter as PDF and share it here.
Maybe we should download all of those ROMS an reupload the on a sharehoster only to start a thread with the collection of links over here? Or Maybe a thread in every Device-specific forum?
Thoughts? Want to participate?
How dumb are HTC?
It is the ability to use cooked roms that has helped me tolerate the flaws in WM over the years.
Without the offending roms I would have stopped buying HTC phones years ago. IMHO they should be encouraging the chefs.
They've gone all APPLE!!!
If they persist with this I might as well buy an i-prat and just jailbreak it.
Although slightly off topic I see the WM7 wont allow Sense etc, will HTC still be on their hobby horse. (from what I have read elsewhere it was people messing with sense that p1$$ed them off).
Can some one Post the E-Mail Address /Contact to take my part (and hopefully others) in this ridicules process?
I want to tell them how stupid that is...
Maybe I should switch over to IPhone... if you can't customize it at least works better out of the box!

No cooks, no buy
I wouldn't have bought my HTC Rhodium if there weren't custom ROMs available for it. None of the stock HTC ROMs are any good compared to custom ROMs. HTC should thank the chefs for taking their half finished ROMs and making them usable, because it's the chefs who are helping HTC to sell more phones.
That's one hell of a shot in the foot you've got there...
[RANT] This has to be without doubt one of the daftest actions HTC have ever taken against anyone...
"Hello loyal customers....... We'd like you to go to jail please! "
I heartly agree with everyone on here so far, the main reason I bought my HD2 was because of the custom ROMs on here. (Infact it got reflashed before I even put the SIM in! )
I steer clear of everything Apple because I like to be able to customise what I want, how I want. If HTC are getting all edgy because they're promoting diversity, then they should jump in the iBandwagon and I'll go back to using my Nokia.
I can say with 100% truth, if it wasn't for XDA-Dev's I wouldn't have had 6 HTC's by now. [/RANT]
Dear HTC, as a legal and loyal owner of multiple HTC devices (Vodafone magic x2, Telstra desire, Telstra hd2 and Vodafone legend) I am entitled to download any updates for these devices. As such I would like shipped-roms.com to maintain my copy for safe keeping. Seeing as you do not maintain a public copy of historical roms for unsupported devices I believe this is a suitable compromise. Also this way there is no cost to your company.
If wish to continue on this misguided attack I will dispose of these devices, buy a competitors product and never buy or recommend your product to anyone.
Yours Sincerely,
JJ
They have a forum too
HTC's official site has a forum too.
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/f/87.aspx
Check the forum before posting, make sure you pick the right place for your country or maybe we can all post in the same forum. Also, if we do let's just keep a single thread over at their forums. No sense in flooding them, that will just get the threads deleted.
I hope HTC has more sense(pun intended) than to lose distinction between piracy and a huge group of fans that can only benefit them.
I am on my 5th WM HTC device and it is basically because of you guys that I have kept on going with them. I can't imagine having all this fun tweaking, prodding, and modifying any other phones.
Android should be safe... but...
This really does suck. From my understanding and previous history with scrappy unsupported phones from other OEMs, even if I did stick to WM, I would have gone out of my way to get an HTC phone, because of this site and the work that gets done here.
Fortunately, I went with a Nexus One running android so aside from the appropriated Desire keyboard, there really isn't anything that's HTC specific app wise. Also tack on the fact that Android is covered by GPL if I'm not mistaken so that should shield at least the Android development hacks. But who knows really. It could also be a licensing issue with WM specifically that may have triggered this. WM licensing is something truly weird as none of it is really visible to the end user and is usually agreed upon between OEM and carrier.
I just hope this doesn't spread to here. XDA is the central hub of making smartphones actually smart.

Lucky to have desire s

Reading the other forums for similar HTC devices, ie incredible s, sensation and evo 3d makes me realise how lucky we are. Those devices and therefore forums may be more popular than this one.
But, I find it quite surprising how many of those people that bother to respond to threads on the other device forums, respond with attitude and negativity. Without intentionally bashing other members, by comparison we seen a more considerate bunch, with less "know it alls". Lets keep it that way.
I think that we are very lucky in that sense and should endeavour to continue the good spirit and sense of community.
on the same note do remember that there is a search button which should always be used prior to posting new threads, also remember that when creating a new thread if the tags added aren't any good then it will never be found by others when searching.
As another member says....peace and lets try to carry on the good attitude
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium
DITTO. Other phones might have more ROMs, but no support. The sensation forum has so many posts, that one's question would be buried behind 50 others rather than 1 reply
I think it probably has a lot to do with the desire s not being a stand out when it comes to features, but what it does offer is a high quality handset with very reasonable performance.
But I will agree with the quality of posts in other forums, although this isn't an overly active forum, what it lacks in activeness it gains in quality.
I wouldn't worry about a lack of support as we have some great users (proxuser?) porting ROMs almost non stop, LBC for his fantasic ROM and the Virtuous team for their more in depth multi handset ROM.
I really have to agree here. This part of the forum is awsome. Every member gives a hand when needed, developers are close to users, and there is no extra off topic that drives me crazy.
I congratulate me everyday for picking this phone instead of Nexus S !
That, and the nexus s is basically a phone made of happy meal toy plastic ;-) as I have been saying to the three black sheep that are at school with me who all got one in a matter of a week .

yeah, superkid, proxuser, LBC, Virtuous Team, and others like ben_pyett (who has provided non-stop support in the genreal section) have made this forum what it is
I have a Desire S. My loyalty was tested when my sister recently gave me the Incredible S for my birthday. It was so tempting and I HEAVILY contemplated migrating to it. I went on youtube watching reviews, read reviews, checked out the development community over at xda. After a long struggle of choosing between the two, I gave away the Inc S. I had a choice, and at the end of the day my loyalty stays strong to the Desire S. I couldn't get away from its robustness and slender design. Aren't you all proud?
My point is what kept me clinging was this community of developers. To put it simply, I didn't wanna leave you guys for the very same reasons stated by ben. The Inc S had more ROMs but most of them were abandoned. I stuck around because I am a fan of LBC and have great hopes and belief for it.
And Ben, you're one of the most active members on this development I've seen so the props go to you mate.
Seriously, this device is so underrated. The Inc S may be bigger and slightly better but I feel most comfortable with the DS. It's so adequate, perfect and extremely well designed. I just love the look and feel of it in my hand. Everything is just the right amount.
In terms of size, 3.7" is perfect for me. 4" is tolerable. But 4.3", Jesus Christ. Who else is not diggin' the new trend for smartphones getting bigger and bigger? Not me. Unless its gonna do my laundry for me, I don't a mini tablet as a phone.
"Who else is not diggin' the new trend for smartphones getting bigger and bigger? Not me. Unless its gonna do my laundry for me, I don't a mini tablet as a phone."
Totally agree mate and yeah Ben deserves major Kudos ,he helped me a lot at the start when I thought I had bricked my Desire S and getting the LBC rom
THANKS
Many Thanks gentlemen, but, stop it you're making me blush.
Honestly I didn't create this thread for praise, just simply to point out the differnce between this and the majority of previously listed forums attitudes, just try reading some of the posts from the other forums for yourselves and you'll see exactly what I mean.
I try to put in as much as I can, as I too am only a beginner, this being my first Android device and I figure sooner or later I'll need some real help. I also benefit from the time and effort that's put in by the various ROM cooks and figure that this is the only way that I can give back.
Not escaping the fact that I'm ultimately a bit of a geek who likes this stuff and is always keen to learn (Even at my ripe old age).

So I too like this forum. I just come here for therapy now ;-)

I believe that either you have a massive dud unit, or it's about time that you took the chance and moved to a custom ROM!
I've has this phone since April and have the exact opposite opinion! I've used LBC Mod since it was first available after I S-OFF'd and rooted my phone, I have tried the other ROMS all of which offer different things, depending on what you're looking for, but, for me coming from a WM Sense background I'm very happy with a "working" close to stock ROM that's stable reliable and ideal for daily use.
I'm also on T-mobile UK. Happy to point you in the right direction - if needed.
Well, I don't want to brick my phone (even reports of frying internals just by removal/reinsertion of battery!) or have warranty problems. Already had motherboard replaced once...
Let me count the ways... Some are these things may be Android platform related, some the Disaster S (hardware), some the stock firmware, or network incompatibility.
- Before the motherboard was replaced, phone would spontaneously reboot seeming triggered by being in poor reception areas when it was going in/out of coverage. It also managed to crash my car radio (and itself) when connected to the car radio via Bluetooth (no other phone has done that)
- Now it randomly fails to tell me about market updates, randomly stops notifying of incoming SMSs properly, some settings in some (standard/built in) apps seem to revert for no reason, it occasionally refuses accept an incoming call when there's indicated coverage. I recently had random emails delayed by over an hour (but I wasn't told by the market there was a GMail update)... yada yada
My all-time record up time before doing a restart to (temporarily) fix one thing or another is about 10 days. Normally it's 5 or less. The worst thing is it's unpredictable. I never know when something's going to break and I'll miss calls, emails or txts, or it will get stuck in a syncing loop draining battery (Exchange contacts sync in the HTC Email app gets turned on somehow, even though I keep deselecting it).
It's just a toy really. Something to show your mates down the pub. Not really fit for purpose. And I'm fed up of looking for workarounds or apps to replace in-built functionality that's supposed to work. Blackberry may not be so pretty, but in my experience they tend to do 'exactly what they say on the tin'. I will prob be back to RIM when I can...

Ouch...I feel your pain, although that sounds like you should get a replacement unit under warranty, or move back to something that you'll be happier with.

Indeed. Hence my comment about RIM. Ironic that my main reason for going Android was the tighter integration with all things in the Google cloud, but in real world terms I've found RIM do that more reliably. Go figure?!?
I don't actually think it's a hardware problem with the Disaster insofar as the nature of the probs makes me think it's firmware and the way I use it. For example I use Exchange, 802.1x wireless authentication, 4 Google apps accounts, etc. I'm sure others do too but maybe not in the same combination. Whatever. Sadly I frequently seem to find what become confirmed bugs in products that others don't.

Yeah, sorry. Maybe we need a 'therapy' forum anyway lol. Or a new topic "Unlucky to have the Disaster S, lucky to have this forum"
Not everybody is lucky.
I really think that you've got a bad/defective unit. Everybody around here enjoys this phone and squeezes every bit of performance and eyecandy out of it.

Petition to Samsung.

Hi.
What kind of power we can have if we will make petition to Samsung software/developement team to do some updates of Android to our phone?
How many users are here that have this awesome mobile?
I always think is good idea to try than moan...
I e-mailed Yotaphone and asked if they would consider making a qwerty slider....
I think it would be beneficial if we all did the same.
It is not my intention, to find new device.
I am fed up going for new.
Old is good enough many times.
Our mobile is enough for emails, www etc. but the only downside is software.
It's not going to happen. Both the carrier (T-Mobile) and Samsung would need to agree that it's worth spending a lot of money to give this phone an upgrade. Given that both companies want you to buy a new phone every 5 minutes, neither of them want people to be satisfied with their old phone. And speaking of old, this phone is almost 3 years old and has a small user base. There are hundreds of more popular phones released between then and now which haven't seen updates, so no one's going to pay much attention to ours. The only way to get updates is to make them ourselves.
If we don't try - we will never know for sure.
How many registered users are in Relay section, can anybody check?
Check in

I'm still using mine, but it's really a secondary phone at this point. Given that the flex cable is this phone's Achilles heel, I don't slide the keyboard out very often, either.
lol. How about a few of you...
a) learn to code and help move the 5.x support forward,
b) donate a phone to a dev, since the two primary developers no longer OWN a relay (and both have mentioned that they would be willing to work on it if somebody donated a phone).

I would love to learn how to code but no one really has time to teach and i know there are plenty of guides but I'm afraid I'll kill my phone. I've already managed to kill my usb port, not from coding attempts, but nonetheless inoperable. As for donating, the relay is my only working t mobile phone so I don't want to give it up. I would, however would pitch in on one. From what I've seen they go for about 100 or so. I would like to be part of the solution in any way I can.
Another Relay user here...
Since this is one of the last good QWERTY phones around, figured it was time to stop just lurking this forum and sign up lol. I'd also be willing to test any new 5.x ROMs built, since I'll have an alternate phone in a couple of days that I can fall back to if I break this one.
I have a phone and I can code, however I need somebody who give me clue or some direction to follow. I've never coded for hardware, only business apps.
This one is not gonna be cheap, but if it runs android it will be amazing:
