[Q] Problems with oleophobic coating inconsistencies?

While similar to the other thread regarding the coating wearing off, I seem to be suffering a different problem with various Nexus S's I've gone through over the past two weeks. I'll do my best to describe the problem, but bear with me as I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
I typically keep my phone in one of three places. It's always either in my inside pocket of my pea coat, one of the angled pockets on the outside of the same coat, or it's in the right pocket of my slacks. It is never in these pockets with any other objects and has either been naked, in the Nexus One pouch, or in the G1 pouch as recommended by several other XDAers.
My first Nexus S formed a pattern right over the menu button on the bottom of the phone. They resembled scratches at first glance, but if you were to completely clean the phone with a microfiber cloth and some rubbing alcohol, they would disappear entirely. Even in most lighting situations, you would never be able to see the pattern that formed. It only became easily visible after I had used the phone and smudged it up with fingerprints. Thinking they were scuffs, I also tried to rub them out with other cloths and solutions, none of which helped whatsoever.
This pattern over the menu button drove me crazy enough that I exchanged it with Best Buy.
My second Nexus S did well for about a week until I noticed a similar pattern forming near the top of the phone by the earpiece. It was three or four slightly curved horizontal lines that all behaved just as the previous pattern did on my last Nexus S.
I traced the cause of these lines back to the G1 pouch as the inseam of the case was rubbing against the screen. Thus, I no longer use the pouch anymore.
Still within the holiday return period, I decided to exchange this model as well. I currently have a brand-spankin' new Nexus S with zero screen defects that I have been hesitant to put in ANY pouch or keep in ANY pocket.
I would opt for a screen protector at this point, but that really defeats the purpose of having the oleophobic coating in the first place. I also have the Tech21 d3o pouch and two of the generic Samsung pouches from Hong Kong set to arrive in the next couple weeks.
Has anybody else noticed this with their Nexus S? I would post pics but I returned both phones with the issue and I have not a camera that would have been able to capture such detail.

Why? Is battery acid bad for it or something?

Mine has a spot where it kinda got messed up. but if you wipe the oils off that spot, you can't see it at all. It annoys me, and I've thought of exchanging it. But my thinking it's just going to happen on the next phone anyway. I don't want to exchange it for a phone that might really be defective, so for now I am trying to not think about it. After all, it's a phone, and over time it's gonna get dings and scratched anyway.... Just like a $50k sports car that you use every day. It's inevitable.

That's about where I'm at with this problem too, except I really didn't think cosmetic defects like this would happen within the first month!
I kept my Nexus One significantly longer than any other phone I've ever owned and the only cosmetic damage it ever incurred was when my girlfriend threw hers on the bed and it landed on mine. Even that incident only caused a minor scuff in the corner of the phone. The screen, Teflon, metal bezel, all of them remained perfect.

Yeah, I hear you. My droid 1 lasted me from launch date up until I got my nexus s. Never put a screen protector on it, just kept it in my pants pocket. It's been dropped, has a couple dings, but the screen is perfect. I cleaned it with my shirt, jeans or whatever.
I'm just hoping that if the coating on the nexus s gets worse and wears more, that it can be totally removed with no traces left behind. I don't really care too much about finger prints, as i'll just wipe them off.

if you pay top dollar for a phone, then you should take the extra steps to purchase proper cleaning solutions for your device. The reason why some people are experiencing this problem is because they are probably using solvents or abrasive cloths that damages the oleophobic coating. For example, like using rubbing alcohol. This stuff is just not wearing off, people are rubbing it off.

@j.bruha: maybe your problem could depends on your after shave (i.e. on your second phone that had problems on top) or on an hand care cream (even too much aggressive)... I think it's very strange that you have the same problem with 3 terminals in less than a week.

Completely unrelated, but how do you like the Tech 21 pouch? Would you mind starting a thread with a couple pictures? I know a lot of people have been asking about Tech 21 and their d3o stuff.

That's not true at all. Many people who have had these issues said they never used any chemicals or liquids to clean the screen.

That is correct. These "chemicals" were used after the lines started forming. To be more descriptive about said chemicals, I used medical alcohol squares and wipes designed specifically for phones that I picked up from work to try to clean the screen after I noticed the damage. These same chemicals were used on all of the Nexus Ones that came through my household and none of them ever showed any signs of damage at all.
As I said in the original post, these are solid lines that seem to have shown up due to something pressing against the phone either repeatedly or hard enough to make these inconsistencies, despite the fact that all of the phones have been exceptionally well taken care of. Again, I won't call them scratches since they only show up in certain lighting conditions and after smudges start to form from usage. I've seen scratches on a Vibrant I borrowed before I bought the Nexus S and this is totally different. The only similarity is that they're straight lines and not entire sections or hairline scratches like the back of the phone collects too easily.

This is what I said " they are probably using solvents or abrasive cloths that damages the oleophobic coating." It's already proven the NS doesn't have gorilla glass so if you continuously go thru your day without a screen protector then micro-scratches will occur through daily usage of taking it in and out of your pockets, purses, messenger bag, etc. If you're using harsh solvents to clean your screen, then you risk damaging the screen. If you're using abrasive cloths, you risk damaging the screen. Even constant swyping with your finger, eventually the dust particles will scratch it up, plain and simple. The first thread I saw of this, you can tell from the swirls on the screen, more so than not, he rubbed something abrasive or harsh chemicals into his screen and screwed it up himself.

Best Buy's return period was extended until January 31st for everything purchased during the holiday season. If you bought it recently, you have 30 days from the date of purchase.

Not sure if this is the same thing happening to anyone, but this has happened on two out of the four phones I have had (others had touch screen issues, right side of screen would stop responding) Basically what happens is after about 4 days a area developes on the screen that looks just a little darker than the rest of the screen. If I touch it, it leaves a finger print. If I wipe it, the print kinda disapears, but there is still a very faint dark mark. I have only used a microfiber cloth to clean all of my phones, and I've never had this issue with any of my other phones including my Nexus one and Vibrant.
As you can see on this phone it forms in the shape of a tear drop. My other phone it happened next to the ear piece and was much bigger.

I think I'm having the same issue as you have. It's happened two of the four phones I've been through. The first time near the ear piece, on the new one, on the bottom left of the actual screen.

I dropped my Arrive onto a tile floor. As it slipped out of my hand a quick thought shot through my mind - should have bought the insurance. As pieces went everywhere I reached down to asses the damage.
The pieces were just the battery cover and batter. Since the keyboard was not out during the drop, I was surprised to see the battery cover come off, since I thought it impossible without extending the keyboard.
After putting everything back together and turning on the phone, all was well. Not a scratch or scuff to be found.
Whew!

Yeah I've dropped mine twice now (!) which are the only two times I've dropped any of my phones in the last 10 years. I think the aluminum battery cover makes the phone very slippery to hold relative to other phones, and opening the keyboard requires enough force that sometimes the little bugger just gets away from me. I'm contemplating a skinomi carbon-fiber body skin to give it more grip, but I hate doing things like that. My only concession has been a screen protector (which I also never use). I think I just need to be more careful.

That's how I saw my battery for the first time. Dropped it the second day I had it. Decided not to get a screen protector because the screen looked too nice. Face down and not a nick or scratch. Agree, this is one tough phone.

Dont know how you guys avoid scratches on your screens. My screen protector is covered in them! But then again... its probably is more sensitive than the screen.
To access the battery, we need to slide out the keyboard so the part that holds the screen up, uncovers the notch to take the cover off. Obviously it doesnt actually hold the cover in place. Must be purely an aesthetics thing.

Just had my close call today a little while ago; it was a two foot drop from my hand in a chair to the tile ground with it landing right on its face. Still a bit paranoid but looks like everything is fine on the exterior, but the cover flew off too. Right now trying to do everything I can think of to make sure the internal components are still in working order, particularly the mic and speakers.

Frankly, the most fragile part (as far as impact damage goes) is the screen/casing. So if cosmetically it looks fine, it probably is fine.

Didnt you just see it going in slow motion the whole time? lol Glad you faired well.

I tossed mine off the desk (accidentally -- swept my arm while talking, caught the cord, phone came unplugged)
The slow-mo with the long too-deep-to-be me "nooooooooooooo" followed by the beautifully artsy smash into the wall. Battery cover and battery left their normal homes.
Reassembled, everything's fine. It's like the first scratch in a new car. Sucks, but it'll happen.

Internal OLED cracked, not sure why

This is a mortality report for my Captivate.
At 6:40, I got off the bus walking towards my destination, a meeting with some other students. Nothing of note happened. When I got to the second floor at 6:45, I checked the time, noting that I was early for the 7:00 meeting time. When I reached the room I was headed for, no one was there, so I turned on the lights and waited.
When the first other student arrived about 5 minutes later, I pulled my phone out to check the time, and it no longer displayed anything. In fact, the internal OLED had been cracked, and only a few scattered pixels sparkled behind the glass. The screen protector had a nick in it, like it had been stabbed by the corner of something, but it had been safely tucked away, screen facing my leg, since the last time I pulled it out. Upon removal of the screen protector, I found no scars on the screen itself.
I've absolutely babied this phone since I got it two years ago. It's only ever dropped 3 feet onto thick carpet a year ago, had a screen protector since the first week of ownership, cleaned compulsively and carried like a Ming vase. It sucks to see it destroyed so randomly and outside my control.
My only thought is that I may have bumped it against the rivet next to my pocket when putting it away last, but that hardly seems like something that could do this much damage. I would have had to have taken a pretty big swing to do this kind of damage. Likewise, how could the OLED crack without the screen above it also cracking?
Ultimately, I'm kind of glad this thing died. I'm upset that it didn't get to retire properly, but at the same time it has caused me nothing but problems. It's a wonderful phone for developers and modders, but the design was just crap from the start. The faulty GPS unit, the poor power management with a tiny battery, the CPU that could barely handle the default OS despite being the fastest phone of its time, OTA software updates that never came. It's certainly been a bumpy ride, thanks for making it a bit more bearable, XDA. I'll probably see you on the GS3 forum pretty soon, I hear they fixed all those problems and more!

My only guess is that you bumped into a table, chair, etc. to get such damage done. Perhaps without noticing it
2 years is still pretty good though and while it had it's bad sides, I surely enjoyed mine to the fullest. I dunno how patient you're but the S4 is coming out probably sometime in June so if you can handle a cheap phones till then, it could be something to look into. Otherwise, I'll see you on the S3 side

I really don't know how this happened as the last time me and the old lady got into a spat I punched my screen as hard as I could and only accomplished cutting my pinky and crushing my knuckle. These things have Gorilla Glass a.k.a Kick your ass glass.

Help! Bezel Rotation Broken?

I purchased my Gear S2 on release day last month, and so far all has been good up until yesterday.
I was turning the bezel to check my notifications, and noticed it started to get really stiff. To the point where it was nearly impossible to turn it. I turned it a bit harder and it started turning again, still controlling the device, but there was no longer any "clicks" that the bezel usually makes when scrolling through things and it was still really stiff and hard to turn. No matter which way I turned it. It also started producing bits and pieces of some sort of rubber from underneath the bezel that I could somewhat pull off. You can feel the stainless steel grinding when you rotate it now, which is really concerning me. I'm thinking whatever mechanism helps the bezel rotate underneath somehow broke and I'm not sure what to do at this point. The device is still fully functional, but the bezel is nearly unusable, and that's kind of the reason I bought the Gear S2.
Any suggestions? I bought it from Best Buy off-contract on October 2nd.

Just to anyone who might come across this thread with the same problem, I took the device to the Best Buy that I purchased it from and they were able to exchange it because it was still under warranty

I called Samsung with a similar issue. My bezel hasn't gotten stiff yet but the indicator "white dot" that goes around the watch face while turning the bezel sometimes goes the wrong way while scrolling through apps or reading email . This is only my 5th day with the watch. I love it BUT...I'm afraid this will get worse the longer I have it. I bought the watch from AT&T full retail. AT&T does not want to swap it and Samsung wants me to send it in for repair. I'm still within the 14 day return window at AT&T so I may just do that. Even though it will cost me $35 to do that :/

You will need to exchange it. I think what may have happened is that sand or grit has gotten under the bezel. This can happen even with a Swiss watch. The fact that it is hard to turn is usually an indication of this happening.

This has happened to mine after only 1 week. And I'm very gentle with it. The bezel is impossible to turn. I got the 3G version.

When my Gear S2 started to feel resistive I used less than a drop of Super Lube around the rotating ring and worked it in a little. Better than new now. Rotates smooth with that sweet notch feel. I'm never without a pen super lube precision oiler in my pocket while at work. Part Number 51010. Amazon.

I wouldn't use an oil based lubricant on the bezel of the Gear S2. As was discussed in another thread, the Gear S2 is IP68 water resistant, which means it probably has a rubber seal underneath the bezel. Oil based lubricants may damage rubber seals and gaskets, so it is probably better to just rinse the watch with warm water. Since the Gear S2 is IP68 water resistant, holding it under the faucet and turning the bezel won't harm it. When my bezel gets sticky, I usually just take the band off and hold it under the kitchen faucet while turning the bezel.

The bezel has completely come off my s2 at some point and is lost. I've written to Samsung support and they wrote back with 3 suppliers ..... Useless information as they don't do any spares for the s2 ...... So I'm in limbo . In my opinion Samsung after care is rubbish

What suppliers did they provide you with? I have the same issue

Put gun oil in the cracks and turn it not alot should be fine

gun oil fixed the issue every time it gets hard put a lil in the cracks n turn it

just rinse the watch in water it will clear the dust and dirt under the bezel and it will go back to working fine

The same exact issue has happened to my galaxy watch. That is how I found this thread and im sure others will be searching too so im replying even though its old. The bezel would stick and I would force it to turn and it would be fine and then small black chunks of some type of plastic began appearing from underneath it so I spent some time turning it over and over again and then removing these chunks and it has worked just fine since it stopped producing the black chunks of whatever. It seems like some type of plastic. I was thinking the backing from an adhesive tape but at the same time hoping it was not part of a gasket to keep water out. I wear the galaxy watch in the shower and so far it has been fine. This is my first switch from apple to Samsung and have gone through 3 first gen apple watches because the screen randomly falls off. I was not expecting to have issues with a near $400 Samsung watch. as long as its still waterproof then there really is not an issue but I would like to know what is coming out of my watch and why...It doesn't seem like a major issue so far though.

From my understanding the bezels operate by ceramic ball bearings what ever color. Which also means there has to be some kind of springs inside as well to Hold appropriate pressure on the ball bearing to give the rolling clicks. I am a mechanic so dirt grease and grime are everyday things for my watch and up til recently I rinse mine randomly to get the gunk out

Dark spot on screen

Anyone get a spot like this on their screen? It's not a daily and a few days ago when I turned it on that spot was there. It's not the screen protector as I peeled it back and it's still there. Any ideas?

My screen is fine, but it looks like your LCD is degrading or something is behind the LCD like glue.

Did you drop it? I dropped mine with no case out of my shallow pocket getting out of my van. The drop was ~ 4' direct hit on the corner of the cement curb, point of contact being right above the power button on the titanium lining. A few scratches on the titanium/plastic lining at the point of contact, but the tank phone shrugged it off like it was nothing. At least I thought so as I put it back in my pocket, whilst subsiding the shock of dropping my baby in such a brutal way. Later on I took my phone out to check my bank account and the bright white background revealed a not so pretty bruise on the LCD looking alot like this but next to the power button area. My heart sank, I thought to myself, this is it. It will never be the same. That was a few months ago, it wasn't noticeable on any background not white, so I learned to live with it. Trying not to remember it every time I used my phone. Sometime in the last month or so, I looked for it again. Checking for it on white backgrounds, and amazingly, yes. It actually healed itself somehow. Praise the Lord!! I am so lucky, it only briefly returns if I put significant pressure on the point where it lived. I can see swirls of light where it seems something beneath the LCD is providing counter-pressure on a small point when pressed. My points being:A-If you dropped it, there's why it happened and B- if so, there is hope of self healing. Sorry for the essay, it's the first time I've told this story so there's no short version yet. Lol

It fell from much less than 4'(exiting a vehicle) and that was months ago in June. It was fine and it just got there a couple days before I posted

Didn't noticed my phone got one until earlier today do you guys think this will get worst than it is now?

I've seen these dark spots on several phones that has been in for repairs and all of them came in contact with some form of liquid..
