Best WM Phone out there - General Questions and Answers

What is the best WM phone avail that is great for rom usage.
my wife has the Treo Pro. well i personaly hate it. Can't really do much with it.
something that works great with SPB Mobile Shell also

On my personal opinion the best WM device on the market to this date is Touch Pro 2
EDIT: If you need a hardware keyboard there is no better option by now and nothing upcoming, if you don´t need a keyboard read later posts

Hy,
i love my HTC TOUCH HD ...

TP2 for now, but the new LEO will be out soon and smoking!

Wait for the Leo like my learned friend above says...

All around device, I would say Leo
For the snappiest performing device, anything running the latest-generation OMAP processor will do, the current generation which is not yet in a device is capable of 1080p playback at something like 30% cpu usage

New polaris, not that impressed (ex wizard)

Hi , got my new orbit 2 (polaris) the other day and im not that impressed by it as yet.
I came from using my trusty vario(wizard) and it doesnt seem (as yet) much quicker than that.
I know it has built in gps, radio etc. But i cant put me finger on it why it hasnt impressed me much. i played a bit of video on it and it was a bit jumpy, also scroll is a bit iffy.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it can do and do better than my old phone?
Or what to use to make it a pleasure to use.
Thanks.

Believe me..it could be one of most impressif pocketphone's out there..but the only problem with this device is that HTC didn't do there homework that good and put this device to soon on the market.
But when the new firmware (with drivers) come's online it will be one of the finest pocketphone's out there at the moment.
The only think for us is to pray that HTC will make the firmware with the drivers, otherwise it will go into be books as a slow and bad preforming device 4-ever and HTC will loose a lot of trusty customers!
But like the other also said..it's being sad in a lot off topics now..so lets use the other threads for the complenning
i agree. i bought mine a week ago. the touch cruise and i am not that impress coming from a tmobile mda aka wizard. i still use my wizard. love it but cruise slow. internet is slow. features are wack. the only good thing is the radio but i dnt listen to radio and tomtom navigation. i live in nyc i use the subway so not that usefull to me. htc better come good or its apple for me.

This is exactly what I'm thinking...HTC really messed this wicked phone up....Gonna wait for the Xperia or Samsung i900.
You aren't getting drivers for it. You are getting a software patch that helps fix a few things like scrolling and some basic touch screen functionality, nothing to do with video.
unfortunately, if you want to watch movies you have to convert them yourself and spend the time doing it, then you can have some fun with high quality movies or shows.
i will think twice before I buy my next handset. I don't expect the most amazing device in the world, but I don't like to be mislead in advertising.
Funny, I find my Cruise does everything I ask of it. I find it an improvement in almost every way over the KJAM (OC'ed to 247mhz), and the Treo 750.
Can someone give me some links to help please? Thanks.

How is your cruise setup?
I've just installed Coreplayer .....runs pathetic....picture hardly moves when running a 480MB avi.
Camera...you can forget that....never seen such rubbish...I'm sure the image quality is good...nobody should have to wait that long to take a picture.
I have a UK O2 Orbit 2....got rid of the O2 taskbar icon (after reading it was a memory hogger).
Installed :
HTC Home Screen...
HTC Theme (black) tsk file 102KB vs 200+KB for the 02 Theme.
Skype
Core Player 1.1.1
Opera 9.33
OTO
Calculator skin
WMP Skin
Advanced Configuration
PocketCM Keyboard (one of the best touch apps....never knew I could touch type that fast)
I for one am willing help in what it takes to have this phone running to at least 2/3 of its potential. Compared to my friend's Hermes...thats faster....got suckered into touch and WM6 Pro....
Where as touch v1 is a decent attempt (O2 just messed it up) I'm sure V2 only get better...Microsoft really need to integrate touch into the OS..(whats with the small up arrow next to keyboard selection on the taskbar...with so much empty space around it?....saving on real estate ?).
To me this OS looks/feels the same as the one I had on my SPV C500 years ago...(have you seen the WM6 original calculator !) 3rd party can only do so much.
Well I think HTC better watch out....to sell an expensive phone half finished...well what you say...advertising SOLD IT. But theres a few phones coming out soon and if they utilize the hardware and have half decent software then HTC will have to up the ante...should be interesting.
At the moment we will have to wait for what improvements HTC brings to this COOL LOOKING phone.
Sorry...I'm just a bit disapointed.

Aside from the video driver issues (which BTW hasn't bothered me that much), what software do expect HTC to ship with the device? HTC has done a good job integrating TouchFlo and HTC today into WM. It sounds to me like your complaints software-wise are more directed to MS rather than HTC.

Since both devices are the same performance and feature-wise your only decision is whether you require a physical keyboard on the Tytn II.

Thanks all...going to install Coreplayer 1.2.0....I did the tweaks, glyph and sound on the shutter..no effect really...maybe I've got a dud....warms up too in my hand....
Also if anyone is running the HTC home screen...which one is it ?...there so many to choose from...
Is there one specifically for the Polaris ?...I've seached and found many versions and variations.
but why does it seem as slow as my wizard? I thought the processor was supposed to be much faster? And the scrolling is finnicky to say the least.
i just downloaded coreplayer 1.3.0. whats so special about core player?
it's the player which supports most formats
I have the Orbit 2, and when I first tried using Internet Explorer I was very disappointed with the extremely slow and jerky scroll, if you could call it 'scroll'. Now that I have managed to install SPB Pocket Plus with the 'Smart Scroll' feature enabled, I'm now happy with that aspect. I haven’t tried video on it yet, but my thoughts now are that I do like the device, especially because of its form factor and looks. Before the Orbit 2 I had the SPV M3100 (Hermes), prior to this I had the SPV C500, and prior to that I had the original windows Smartphone, the Orange SPV.
For me, the Orbit is a step in the right direction, but I will be a little disappointed if video is unusable.
Overall I am happy with my Cruise (I have gotten a sim-free version). Apparently a number of people complain about speed, and I have noticed that this is also related to owners of Cruise who are on the O2 network. My guess is O2 loaded their version with useless software which reduces performance.
Regarding the video issue, I user Coreplayer 1.2 (coreplayer is a must), I encode my videos in QVGA resolution and they seem fine to me. True, you won't be able to take an existing DVD quality rip and expect Cruise to show it well, even in Coreplayer.
Performance-wise, Cruise could probably do a little better given its specs, but overall, I still think it is a very good and practival device.
Hopefully video issue will be addressed, I am not 100% confident it will be fully resolved though. Though the device works fine for me, it is quite upsetting to know that its hardware is not fully utilised...
As my closing statement have a look at the text below, from
gizmodo. com/gadgets/what.s-wrong-with-windows-mobile/whats-wrong-with-windows-mobile-and-how-wm7-and-wm8-are-going-to-fix-it-333536.php
=-=-=-=--=-=
Microsoft is working to fix the whole WM platform. Here's how:
Even when using a super sluggish WinMo phone, it's less an example of a manufacturer not meeting the minimum requirements for RAM, ROM and CPU power, and more a problem of software which has not been optimized to run on it. This is often the service provider's fault. For example, two phones with the same 400MHz processor can be totally different depending on how much optimization the provider decides to do. When you're using a slow phone, blame the provider.
On the same token, the Windows Mobile OS team actually does set a minimum hardware requirement for the "core" features of the OS to make sure the user experience is a good one, but the minimum-requirement bar may be set too low. When companies add apps on top of the core, things start to wobble. Product manager Derek Snyder told me that Microsoft will raise the bar for minimum requirements to a level where phones can be loaded with more software without slowing down the most basic of tasks (e.g. sliding open the AT&T Tilt from portrait to landscape mode).

Recommendation: Fuze? Xperia? Omnia?

first i like fuze (touch pro).. i like the qwerty keyboard.. but i heard a lot of video crap.. like the old days of kaiser..
my other options are Omnia and Xperia
Omnia has a good feedback at video and speed.. but lacks the qwerty board... but it has 16gb internal memory
Xperia because of the qwerty and speed.. but dont know any flaws..
Xperia and Fuze has a very good support in our site.. i dont know about Omnia??
please give me a feedback like pros and cons, personal experiences..
or should i save my money and wait for the next set of PPC by HTC this 2nd quarter of the year.. WinMo 7 will be release.. and wishing for the snapdragon chipset to be integrated.. 1gig Mhz.. can support 12mp camera.. still hoping...
Fuze
I had the same decision and i bought the Raphael/Touch Pro/Fuze. got it mostly for the keyboard but also because i loved the look of Touch Flo 3D.
At first i was a little disappointed, i had to soft reset at least once a day to keep it working and everything was pretty slow, but i flashed my ROM to Elite RC3 a while ago and it made my Raphael the phone that i wanted it to be to begin with!
Pros extremely fast everywhere, very stable, slide out keyboard is the best you will find IMHO, nice looking interface that is extremely useful and a time saver, lots of applications made just for it!
Cons Its not as good straight out of the box (flash the ROM), camera is slow as a wet week (missed many a photo)
as for the other two i cant give any first hand experience but you will have to find another website for support on the omnia (counts it out for me lol)
Xperia is a great phone it has support on this site (albeit not as much as the Raphael) if it was me choosing again i would be choosing between the Xperia Panels vs Touch Flo 3D and which i like the look of best.
Oh btw one of the things that really swayed me to the Raphael over the Xperia (my 2nd choice) was the VGA screen, im a huge software lover and LOTS of the games and applications i love aren't WVGA compatible and i didn't want to have to run a resolution changer program all the time.
hope this helps you!
thanks man.. im also thinking in the future use.. winmo 7 will use gesture and xperia doesnt have it.. maybe il buy the fuze..
btw, how's your eperience in palying games? slow? im seeing lot of video driver problem in fuze.. does this new ROMs already know to fix it? or putting the D3D from diamond does it?
for your information, you might not be able to use your fuze with WM7's new features since microsoft announced it might require different hardware
go with HTC Advantage 7510. BIG 5" screen, full haptic keyboard and 16Gb storage
thats too bad.. if fuze cant make it to WM7.. i think ill wait for the new addition of HTC. Rhodium ROCKS! its like touch HD with qwerty board! wow.. ill stick with my good old hermes before rhodium hits.. thanks by the way!
in the meantime, get over to the hermes section and flash section8prime8 wm6.5 beta!

Touch HD or Omnia2

Hay guys,
I am getting a new PDA, I have tytn now and it has served me good.
Could you give me your look on this two models, I am thinking about Samsung, since it has much better specs and display, but I got used to touchflo 3D interface a lot...
Is it possible to put it on Omnia?
Your answer will be appreciated and will help me decide what to buy.
Thanks!
There is one added value for choosing HD
The sup`port of this fantastic site!!
Just because of that I´ll choose HD even if omnia has better specs...
Yes, that is bothering me too...
Well if you're not gonna flash your device or use Touch Flo 3D or any other ported software, than get Omnia 2.
You will still be able to get support in this forum. Most of the issues of non-HTC devices can be supported/solved without the need to correspond to an HTC device.
You could use TouchFlo 3D on your Omnia 2 if its WVGA. However as mentioned above the support provided by this site significantly exceeds that of any site that supports the Omnia. To be completely honest, if you havent bought your device yet you should consider the Touch Diamond II. The reasoning behind this is i read an article somewhere mentioning that devices without a windows button will not get an official WM6.5 ROM or something stupid like that (Correct me if im wrong).
Ill be upgrading from my Tytn to an Omnia2
I agree that HTC gets great support here but Hardware and capability wise there is nothing to compare with the omnia2 on the horizon.
AMOLED screen, headphone jack,tv-out,5mpx cam with dual flash....what more could anyone possibly want?

A forum specialized like this for that device!!!
Hmm, the Touch HD vs Omnia II i8000.
Well, lets face it, this is a question of 'XDA support' or 'No XDA support'. Specs-wise, the i8000 has the Touch HD crushed completely (as have been the case with all new Samsung models; HTC hasn't updated their specs in forever).
Personally, if you ask me for a choice between those two models, I would go with the i8000. The main reason I love XDA support is that it makes the interface looks better and it makes the software faster, but from what I see, the i8000 is already plenty fast and it looks very, very good. Furthermore, the i8000 has support forums too (though not on the level of XDA), so any deficiency may be corrected by its own forums anyway.
The idea of choosing a WM device based on software seems very silly to me. One can find a CAB for just about any Windows Mobile software (including, yes, TouchFlo 3D), so transition between WM devices based on software is very simple. If anything, the i8000 should be more appealing software-wise as Samsung put a lot of amazing software on it that has not been ported to other devices yet.
Always buy for the better specs and design. Never buy for the software support. Buy for the software that is already provided.
Any extras can be found on other fan sites and other non-htc developers. Therefore the Omnia 2 is a much better choice.
Besides there are plenty of software that are created that supports non-htc devices, and there are also software that are created specifically for non-htc devices.
Furthermore alot of the technical problems are Windows Mobile based and not always HTC based.
The only 2 reasons to get HTC devices is 1) if you prefer the design and the specs of HTC and 2) if you want to flash your ROM.
HTC devices are easily flashed to a different ROM, but hey man not everyone uses ROMs... I don't ever use ROM's...
Therefore Omnia 2 is a perfect choice if you don't flash your ROM...and point number 1 shows that HTC Touch HD is outdated....so therefore get Omnia 2 if you don't flash your ROM....
Think about it mate.

a zooming ability on the video camera (while filming)
also, can it play divx/xvid movies like the HD can with coreplayer?
i download movies and dont have to re-encode them, just drag, drop, play. (...generally, unless there was some esoteric encoding used)

I have the same dilemma. I am about to replace my Sony Ericsson W960i with a proper PDA and I am taking into account both, Touch HD and Omnia II.
Similarly I would like to have a Touch Flo 3d interface on my device and therefore I was keener on HTC Touch HD at first. However since it is possible to get a Touch Flo 3d onto all WinMo devices (as I deduced from 8525Smart's post)

What does it mean to"flash your ROM" and how is it useful? Isn't it simply upgrading/updating the ROM?
I'd be grateful if you could help
well livegod guess what ! omnia2 has zooming while taking videos with its awesom camera
and the touch player can support almost 99% of all my downloaded and converted movies
as for the TF3D .. i love the new one and i cant seem to find it anywhere to be installed on my omnia2
i hate the widgets... makes the phone looks like a toy so i am using spbmobile shell + pointui
i'am from germany and I have the same problem.....
But here I can buy the Omnia in a few month....:-(
But what is whith the HTC LEO????????
Touchwiz 2.0 quite simply covers up WM 6.1 SO thoroughly on the Omnia II, it's almost like you're not using a Windows phone. The Omnia II is definitely the better pick unless you REALLY want ROMs to flash. Then wait for the Whitestone or Firestone or whatever HTC have next.
omnia camera is far better than the HD2
especially the video recording
the HD2 dont have a chance
but i dont care about the video recording so i will get the HD2
HD2, wins every time. You can flash what ever you want (when hspl comes out!), why would you ever want an omnia?
Hands down the HD2 (Leo). PPC of the year so far!
Samsung Omnia 2 place...
I'm a Forum XDA user for a long time.
It helped me a lot with my old HTC Wizard.
I was quite worried about buying an Omnia2 and losing the Forum support. But HTC HD cannot win O2 in SPECS.
About support... boys I have to admit.
For Omnia2 (that is not a HTC device) the best software and tweaks and amazing ROMs can be found on MODACO (sorry boys, but I have to say).
If you own an HTC device don't even consider getting there. The best place is here!!!
Concerning the TouchFlo3D, there are many versions available on MODACO. There's even a HTC HD2 like ROM with Sense 2.5
Thanks!

Android or Windows Mobile ?

Hi,
im searchin for a new mobile... i wanted to buy it in the next 2 or 3 weeks, but there is a big problem:
i dunno what mobile would be the best for me :S
I am thinking about Windows mobile and Android ... The windows mobile phones i have used till now are quite nice, but no one really made me fully happy ... i always tried to port other interfaces and so on my lg ks20 and htc diamond.
i´ve seen that android has a quite nice interface with very good touch friendly options...
my windows mobile candidate would be of course the HTC Leo , what the android canditate would be is just open till now ...
I often browse in Wifi networks , like facebook, gmail, icq, etc. and therefor i am searching for an mobile with good browsing quality ... what camera there is ... i dont care about that crap ... just being comfortable in networks , chatting , sharing files and so on...
Hope you can help me ..
else any questions ? just post, i will directly answer.
See ya

//EDIT: I saw now some androids and i think nexus one and desire are very good but , what is the difference between them ?
Hi,
In term of memory management Windows mobile is far way better and for the interface also you have a lot of ui for windows mobile that are now very close to the Android style that you are searching for(if not even better).
I first bought an HTC Hero and was very happy the first two months but then it became so boring because of that lack of programs for it.
Now I am on a Leo and I can assure you that the moment you will put this device in your hand, you will be impressed by his speed.
Hurry up before the HD3
what about the htc desire ?

Here it is in a nutshell,
Android is the new kid on the block, rough around the edges, not fully functional yet, short on apps, in dire need of updates, but with the genuine potential to be an actual iPhone killer ( hence Apple vs HTC suit solely filed to slow down Android ). Android is on it's way, but not going to be great until, after whatever Android phone you buy now, is old and tired.
Windows Mobile is tried and true, tons of free apps, full bluetooth functionality, full Exchange and Office functionality, easy to sync, fully customizable to your needs, but it is what it is and will not get any better. Whatever you buy now, will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series, and WP7S would appear to be that " make it or break it " for
Windows Mobile.
In short ? Android = up and coming, but not quite there yet. Windows Mobile = Already mature, but could be on the down slide soon.
If you are living for today, Windows Mobile hands down. Come this fall ? Phones with Android 3.0 ? Windows Phone 7 Series ? Who knows.
The Nexus One is Googles Android device made by HTC, The Desire " was " the Droid Eris, but has since been reassigned to the HTC branded Nexus One.

Add to that limited Bluetooth capabilities and ( important to me ) limited M$ Exchange and Office capabilities it just isn't mature enough yet to be a serious multitasking phone for business.
Don't get me wrong, I think Android is the future of Mobile OS' . WP7s is going to have to do a lot to convince me otherwise. And I am leaning towards an Android phone after Android 3.0 and WP7s come out, just from what I have seen of Android 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1 on the Nexus, I just still don't think that it is capable yet.
so you think that if you would buy a smartphone now, you would choose winmo...
if you could buy it in 2 years , you would choose maybe android ... right?
Do not be fooled by a shiny interface just like I was.Besides what you are seeing on an Android phone is the Sense UI made by HTC.
If I am not wrong the Nexus one doesn't have the Sense UI.
I am not telling that Android(in reality Linux) is not a good phone. On the contrary you will find it with very useful applications but in some cases just like what happened to me you will not have a wide range of choice for the same application.
For Ex:If you want a Virtual Keyboard, because Android is still new you will have only 2 or 3 keyboards(maybe there is more now) to choose from but on Windows Mobile you have more than 15 competitors to choose from with years of experience in that field .
So,
Android is for you if you can be satisfied with what you have.
Windows is for you if you are thirsty of applications
Hope this helped
thirsty guy
well, i always need to get more apps to have another quit unuseful thing on my mobile, like wifi router or so
then i take the leo ^^
EDIT: @forcefield: i recieved an email , that swype for android is out your problem is solved now
Here is a quote from another german forum
there is no "better" one, some like winmo and some android more ...
before i buyed my new phone i thinked about the hd2 and the milestone... i choosed the milestone and i dont regret nothing !
looking at the amount of apps i would choose android because its just much easier and uncomplicated .. with more apps than windows mobile.
i dont know whats the difference between the desire and the nexus one , but you can wait until they get on the german market to see more information..
pointing on the battery strength maybe its disapointing but i have to be honest, its normally just between 1 and 3 days depending on how you use your phone.

I'm suprised that no one has brought this up, but, if you got a Windows phone, don't you always have the option of running Android on it? I don't think it works the other way around. Please, PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.

Android proted to WM is still a port. It runs within WM and some of the features of Android don't work and some of the features of the phone won't work with the Android port. It will never be as fast or as smooth as Android running natively.

I would take the Leo, faster processor, bigger more beautiful display, more ram. The only plus for the Rhodium is the slide out keyboard.
But just remember that neither phone is going to be upgradable to Windows Phone 7 Series.
of course take the LEO!!!
I own Touch Diamond 2 (which is basically like TP2 without the slide out keyboard) and it's really great and everything. But then I also have access to Samsung Omnia II with 800 Mhz CPU and it's running so much faster and more smoothy. And the big display is insane!! Then go figure because HD2 even comes with 1 GHz!!!! IMO it would be stupid to buy the OLD TP2 with only 528 Mhz.....

No, there's no fully working Android version for any WM phone. They all have bugs and stuff not working.

Is There An Android 2.2 Install For The HTC PRO 2 (Sprint)

I bought an HTC Pro 2 yesterday, and Windows Mobile is horrible. It freezes, using the internet is nothing like an Iphone, and this morning it cut off by itself and would not power on at all no matter what, and the battery was full. I had to take out the battery and reinsert it to get the phone to come on. Soft Reset would not work.
Is there a way to install Android 2.2 on my phone?
Thanks
dude, trust me, the TP2 is great device. Find a nice WM ROM and install it, this will fix most of your problems.
as for surfing, I find Opera Mobile more than capable...it's fast and displays content in great way. Opera mini is a great alternative too.
Regarding your question: check this link

you can dual booth WM & Android on your TP2
I personally like WM more. It's much easier to customize.
I recently installed Android on my kaiser, and I'm starting to like it..maybe I'll install it later on my HD2 and see how it really works on fast device...
Remember that these ports will not be without any problems, they are not made by HTC, so is you are looking for stability, go for a good WM ROM. This will be the best thing to do.
Check out ppcgeeks.com, they have a ton of CDMA ROMs for windows mobile, I personally have BigNaDads Sense ROM and it is my favorite by a long shot, very stable and comes with alot of things preconfigured....
