Android on Non-HTC Devices? - General Questions and Answers

Before anyone comments, Yes. I *know* this forum is primarily for HTC devices.
Anyway, does anyone know if there are any projects going for getting Android running on Non-HTC devices? Specifically, Acer or Eten devices? I've got a bunch of devices here (see my sig), that I'd LOVE to get it running on, but don't have a clue where to start, nor the skills necessary to write drivers for them...

Motorola and Samsung are the manufaturers that spring to mind. There's the Samsung Galaxy and Motorola have just made an announcement which Orange will be carrying sometime in October.

Yeah, I know that; but what I was asking was if anyone knows of any projects to get Android ported to existing non-HTC devices, such as the projects for the HTC Vogue and Kaiser...

Sure, i780 and omnia can run android. No audio and microphone yet.. but you can send sms, navigate into menu, use wifi, install apps etc

Some folks over at modaco.com are porting android for the Samsung Omnia. I think they also have a thread in the dev/hacking section.

Dreaming the HTC Dream

Already many threads comparing newest gadgets, like diamond vs omnia vs touchpro vs xperia, even vs iphone. Typical 'what device after this' discussion. But i never see thread about the new incoming machine from HTC. Maybe i'm dreaming alone? LoL
Well then, what do you guys think about the rumoured android-powered HTC Dream? I read some articles about it on engadgets and pocketpcthoughts but it seems too little leaked information available.
Anyone knows or can predict it full specs? Will it be worth the title of 'Dream' machine?
For me, a non-WM pda might be called a dream after palm's turned-down point...

Infosync confirmed that T-Mo will release it soon in October!
Where's the enthusiasm, peepz?
Imagine what this can do, we saw some android porting thread in some devices forum, but no phone call function succeed. If this has been released, maybe we can dump and extract the rom? Or kernel, since its linux btw. Next thing you know, you can MAKE and COMPILE the kernel yourself....
I must be dreaming...
I'm dying here!
I have been dying for this phone to come out since I first heard about it in the spring. So, no, you are not alone. I have been trying to get comments since then too. The spec are available online and it will be released on October 13th. It will have Microsoft programs and other "cool" stuff. Been planning for this phone. I expected to pay more and am excited about the 200 dollar price tag. Woo hoo!

toshiba

is it possible to add a new group of phones on index? i would really like to see toshiba phones such as g810 there...
thanks!
This is an HTC Forum.. you could use "Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking" ROOM in "General Discussion": a lot of people do that
D'rath
Although I probably won't own a Toshiba, I also think that it would be a good idea to add devices to this forum such as the G01. This is the best windows mobile site, and I think that there are people out there willing to develop and start a community around the new Toshiba phones. They all just need a place to stay
HTC only
As stated several times before...
This is an HTC devices only forum and no section will be added for any non HTC device, this is the point of view of the owners of the site wich I support.
"htc only" heh... Just not true dude!!! Browse the forum!!!

I absolutely agree!!! Plus on that list are non HTC phones like HP iPaqs and SE Xperia... So why not just add ASUS and Toshiba? Simple as that! It would contribute a lot, cause searching for non listed phones is just messy right now!!!
Anyway to prevent further ranting, these were my two cents... Over and out...

they're not branded by HTC but manufactured by HTC
it's been discussed long and many times ago, Browse the forum!!!

Should I got HTC Windows Mobile or Android?

I am waiting for the Sony Xperia X10 to come out, but was wondering, what is the best Windows Mobile device coming out that will be able to run windows mobile 7?
I was waiting for the HTC HD2 , but understand it is not able to use 3g on At&t's network.
I like the Sony and not sure what the pro's of having windows mobile would be. Looking for a upcoming windows mobile device to contend with the Xperia.
Welcome to forums
Wll I would choose an HTC device because the great support of this site.
As for the new models, have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595648
I´m not sure about which one will be able to run WM7
I would stay with WM as Android is to young and unmature OS for now, I´m sure in the near future will be great.
Just my opinion
Good luck,
That being said, what is going to be the best WM device say through Feb 2010?

Thanks that helps!
Anything new coming out 1st Q of 2010 worth mention?
Did you even opened the link I posted on 2nd post?

There's a sticky at the top of this forum, called [EXCLUSIVE] HTC Portfolio 2010 (Q1-Q2). It has all the 2010 Q1 & Q2 devices with full specs and info. The rest is pretty self explanitory

Port Android / WM7 for HD2???

Hi Guys,
This is my first post.... I am firstly thankful to xda team for all their efforts and also to everyone who are working to fine tune WM6 and Android. When will MS learn all this? Damn Windows....(Hope MS is listening)......
Anyway i/everyone am/are totally fed up with WM6... Hope the XDA team is launching Android or WM7 for HTC HD2 (aka LEO) soon... Any NEWS/updates guys????
In short; yes someone (as in a lot of people) is working on both. Welcome to the forums, and check the threads and search function. You will find that threads concerning your questions are quite high in their respective sub-forums. Try and read up before posting, it'll make the stay here quite pleasant. Some people here are tired of answering the same questions over and over, and it'll keep the forums tidy.
very possible but i believe the developers said around end of this year for the android/wp7 on HD2.cant wait......
Well,WP7 is just around the corner.
As for Android,I tried it before but wasn't satisfied because it is maybe interesting at first but later it becomes really boring(Anyway for me).
The HD2's hardware can easily handle WP7 and Microsoft needs to change its mind:just because the HD2 doesn't have a bing key(I think that the problem is about this hardware key.Correct me if I am wrong) this doesn't mean that it is not capable.
@ForceField
Its not just the searchbutton. There are several hardware issues against the "new" mobile concept of MS. Especially the missing sd-card support or better MS don't wan't you to have changeable memory on your device, that might interfere with their "MS marketplace only" app source. That means there has to be much more internal storage in the device itself - like on the iPhone or Palm Pre.
It's definitly easier to become Android on the HD2 since HTC is releasing the nearly similar (hardwarewise) HTC Evo on Sprint - I guess this a nobrainer for the xda-chefs to cook the needed things for that.
microsoft must give an upgrade for htc hd2 because the wm 6.5 is getting boring....some of us loved it but would be great to give a chance to port a wp7 to hd2.. the android operating system is very good too...they made such as good phone as htc hd2 but they gave it away...the next htcs phones doesnt have even sense anymore if i am not doing wrong...after hd2 with sense they throwed away the sense and android came up more famous like HTC Evo or desire..!!!its too bad for such a hi-tech phone to stay forgotten!this phone needs some love so microsoft must give love ;-p and a special gift finally... !!!but at all thanks to god that we have xda-chefs to give us some real dope stuffs to hd2 in nearby ''future''....
ps sorry for my english... ;-p

It is definitely NOT a nobrainer putting Android on the HD2... the EVO may help a little.... but it is not the same hardware as the HD2. The nexus1 is closer hardware-wise to the HD2. They are using the nexus kernel as a starting point for the kernel they've been already working on for months. But they still have alot of work ahead of them. It is not the same as cooking a new rom. They have to port a working linux kernel.
Help......
God.... i am suffering with ORD... please help.

[Q] Will htc continue making winmo (6.5) devices?

or all the future windows based phones will run wp7?

All future devices will be based on Wp7, as Microsoft does not seem to be interested in the past
Long live to Windows Mobile!!
I don´t think we will see another new hTC with WM but it is far away for being dead!
It depends a lot on Devs, Chefs and us users to keep it alive!
Who knows, perhpas in the future you can have a newr hTC device but capable of running WP7/WM/Android
Leo is getting closer!!

sounds cool ...
its definitely sad to see that winmo's development has been stopped. If htc won't make any new winmo-based phones, then there won't be any new version of sense, along with new user-interfaces for other htc's applications.
so sad ...
thanks for the replies
