I had the same issue also, could not get in because I forgot the security password and no matter what i did I got 'invalid password'.
Here is how to do a hard reset of your ZTE 1231, also known as the Vodafone 1231. This is from ZTE support, i tried it on my phone, and it worked like a charm.
Hold on Start key, Right softkey and spacebar key at the same time,Mobile phone will set out to boot with FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS.
Note:Mobile phone battery power must be sufficient.
Translation from Chinglish....
Start key = power on key
Right softkey - this is the key that is just above the red phone key, on the right side of the center 'joystick' key. Google the Vodafone 1231 user manual if this is not clear.

Hi all this maybe a silly question but i gotta ask it .......
Is there a way to set the keypad to lock & to unlock using a 2 key sequence like on a normal phone (* then right softkey?) its a pain having to press 4 buttons to unlock the phone every time

when i set up the device lock it wanted 4 keys so i did 2,5,8,0 id rather set it as * then right softkey if its possible?
Why don't you just press and hold the "End call" button to lock the device? I've got used to it very quickly.
And I think only 2 keys are needed for unlock: left softkey and *...

Hmm, could it be that you've set a password for the device unlock? You can disable it in Start>Settings>Security>Device Lock

This sounds like some third party software. Normal WinMo Standard is left softkey and then *. There are no options to change that. maybe you mean "Device Lock" found in options->security
DEVICE UNLOCK...differs from KEYBORD UNLOCK!!!!
Go to Settings>>Security>>Device Lock>>
Uncheck >>"Prompt if device is unused for"

Playing with my Polaris with Advanced Configuration Tool Ver. 3.3 I made a big mistake: I set the Pressure Threshold to Normal (default). After reset was not more possible to use the Touch Panel. With CeRedEdit I found out that the value in the registry is set to 200 (instead of 19866).
Now I'm not able to use the device because is locked and I cannot unlocked because "pressure" is not enough. I've tried also to push as much as I can but without any results.
With CeRegEdit from my PC I can read the value of Pressure Threshold but I can't modify it because it needs to install a file on Polaris to unlock registry to write a value in HKLM.
I tried also to hard reset the device but it's not possible because keys (IE and GPS) are locked.
The only thing that I can do is answer to phone calls.
Please help me!!!!

Search for 'My Mobiler'. Download and install on your PC. Sync Polaris and try running any reg editor on PPC from PC. Might solve your problem.. Good Luck...

I've installed it but it asks me on the phone my confirmation to execute remote.exe because the author is not known. It's the same problem that I have with CeRegEdit when I try to unlock registry.
I cannot accept because touch panel is not usable.

Why don't you flash a 'splash' or 'radio' using RUU (not custom RUU); that will hard reset the device... you will lose any data there though.

Try to press left lower Hardware button (the one under the green) and
the Wheel Button the same time (simultanely) and the Calibration
Screen should pop up allowing you to reset touchscreen treshold.

Is it already locked when you fresh restart?
I think it should work also in locked state.
Again: Press and hold left lower HARDWARE button, hold it pressed
and press wheel button (or the blue lit one on Polaris).

Try looking for some WinCE registry editor that runs on PC and works over activesync, such as one present in EVC4. I don't know if it loads anything that would give a security warning, but maybe not, hence, certainly worth a try.
same problem
I'm having this same problem. My device is set to lock automatically when it is turned on. The Lower Left hardware button and center button trick does not work because it is locked. The only button that does anything is the sleep button. ActiveSyncing isn't an option because I have to unlock my device before I can connect. ActiveSync jsut gives a "Please unlock device to connect" message. Is the only fix for this going to be to enter the flashing mode (sorry, can't remember the technical term, but I mean when you hold the camera button while soft resetting) and re-flashing my ROM?
[edit]After trying a few more times, I was able to get my phone to hard reset holding the lowest two hard keys and hitting the reset button. It's sad, because I had just finished setting up everything after flashing my ROM. Oh well, hopefully it'll go faster this time.[/edit]
I got chinese "HTC Diamond 2 T5353" with WM6.1 inside. This phone was with french language and I have tried to set up english msimru.dll. Because I had some mistakes, phone now cannot boot up and sleep on splash screen "HTC"
Who know how do hard reset of this phone? It seems like M88 or TM09 inside, have Nand OS.
Haves anybody english or russian language version of update.img for this phone?

It's not original T5353 and this combination not work
I found keys combination for hard reset.
For Your information (I think all chinese clones of T5353 haves this things) - press "send button"+"power button" together. After screen blink immediately press "send key" again (not release "power key"). You should see boot menu. Using volume keys select menu item and press "windows" key.

in off device-turn on (or reset) while you keep the both volume buttons pressed. A screen will appear asking you to press "volume
up" to do the hard reset, or any other key to cancel it.
before you do it, try to backup all data like contacts, sms etc...

to change language, you need to instal t9 Italian and do some registry tweaks --> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MUI\CurLang and change the value 409 to 410

thanks for the help , but this dont't work for me.
I try to set the registry value with Total Comander, after that i turn off the telephone and when i turn on again, it was with the same english language.
Also i try to see what value is on the other "Italian Yota" and i try to set this one too, but nothing change, English remain.
Also the program for the t9 italian , after instalation said that is incompatible with my version and may be not work correctly.
What is wrong ? Thanks for any other answers of all.
P.S. I try to change also this registry value, coping the values from the italian yota

and the result was that the telephone don't want to start now. It arrives to point that i can see the windows mobile logo and it restart himself again and again. I don't know how to make a hard reset, with soft it don't work. Can somebody help?
P.S. 2 I try to press Red and Green phone button and also the reset button all togheter. After i do that my phone display an immage with a hard disk and there is written " Downloading " , after few second the telephon reset himself again, but the result is the same, the telephone don't work, maybe i made badly the hard reset ? Some Idea ? I never do that before, i have to connect the telephone to the computer ?
