Not all usb bluetooth dongles are equal

I bought a usb bluetooth dongle which used xtndconnect software, no joy at all with syncing my xda2, no serial profile that I could discern and basically all I could do was beam files back and forth. I saw on ebay a cheap usb dongle that supported voice gateway, there was no disc with it, just a link to download the widicom software from the sellers site, any way I installed it, I bonded my xda2 with the pc, the xda2 asked me did I wish to use my pc as a headset, I answered yes. I then went to bluetooth setup on xda2 and told it to use bluetooth activesync, it gave an error, saying "bond with serial profile" or something, I thought it was another brick wall dead end, then up popped a message, "activesync setup complete". I then opened activesync on the desktop and it works great. Also if I use my phone while in range of the pc it diverts the audio to my pc speakers and I can use my pc mic to answer. The dongle cost less than £20 in uk. I have to initiate sync by bluetooth on xda2.
The only thing I cant do is browse the web through the bluetooth even when synched, it insists on dialling a number. Can anybody give me the settings, pass thru works with usb connection.
I now have full internet access over bluetooth. I can even access it from downstairs while my pc is upstairs, solid connection, no dropping of signal and very fast compared to dialup over gsm.
Bluetooth
Cruisin-thru....
I have just purchased a class 1 dongle with 100m range, and use the software you mention through my laptop on windows XP Pro.
How did you set up the xda to web browse using bluetooth and your PC broadband connection ?
Regards
IT
I set up all the services I required, then on desktop of your pc click My bluetooth places, choose "my network access". After double clicking on that, click properties, there is a drop down box above "configure network adaptor" choose "allow internet access". Now as long as you are synced you can access the internet. When setting up activesync on xda2, make sure you havent bonded with any other item, go to settings/system/bluetooth, choose "activesync over bluetooth" make sure bluetooth is in "discover" mode beforehand, from there it should search and find the serial port on the pc and should work when you click activesync from programs, then at the bottom left options screen choose "sync by bluetooth". Hope this helps. I could not get any of this to work using another dongle that was using xtndconnect. By the way, the xda2 is very limited in its range for bluetooth regardless of the dongle on your pc.
cruisin-thru, many thanks for your help with Bluetooth Synch issues in these forums. Couldn't have done it without you!
I've just received my VOIP bluetooth dongle (Same as yours? PenBlue?) and got it working with ActiveSync and browsing the Interweb with the XDA2 over bluetooth. Awesome!
Can't work out how to get the network working, though. Scanning other topics here, there seems to be no way without installing the 'new' (Widcomm?) bluetooth stack on the XDA2, and enabling Internet Connection Sharing on the PC. I'd rather not clutter up the XDA2 with another BT stack, and I'm certainly not enabling ICS and buggering up my LAN settings here, just to get the network.
Can you suggest anything? You've been fairly quiet on this subject - wondered whether this PenBlue dongle makes it possible without all this dual-BT-stack skullduggery.
TIA

T-Mobile Dash Bluetooth Modem Mac

When I try to connect my Dash to my Mac it connects fine but there is something missing. In order to use my Dash as a modem for my Mac I need to pair them and so on. In the bluetooth set up, after I pair the two, I get to select which services I want my computer to use on my phone. The only service that shows on my computer is "address book" There should also be an option to "Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection" but it's not there. This is why I can't use my phone as a bluetooth modem. Why is this not showing up in the bluetooth set up? Is my phone not telling my Mac that it can be used as a bluetooth modem? My internet sharing settings and so on are activated and correct on my phone. Is it just my compter?

The Dash has AKU3, which means it lacks BT DUN and only has BT PAN. This is why you don't see DUN, unlike with pre-AKU3 devices.
I'll publish a big article on all these questions in a few hours, where I explain all these questions in detail. Stay tuned!

Is there a way to get a Tmobile dash paired with a G4 Mac Powerbook?
I want to access the internet on my powerbook via my Dash.
I see in your reply above you were going to write an article on this. I've not found out how to get this to work.
thanks for any help
John
I see the problem... basically Mac OS X doesn't support Bluetooth Personal Area Networks (PANs). Bluetooth Modems normally use DUN (which is what HTC devices used prior to AKU2... and was hacked to route into WModem).
With AKU3, MS standardized this. They went with PAN instead of DUN because PAN allows for IPNAT... enabling the device and the laptop to be online at the same time.
But, of course, Macs don't even see the PAN profile... meaning we're SOL right now.
P.S... testing this on my Blue Angel with AKU 3.5... same problem here.

Let's all hope the Widcomm BT hack will some day also have DUN support, even under AKU3+. See the Hermes / Wizard forums for more info on the hack.
DUN / PAN Problems with OSX
I know OSX doesn't support PAN, but check this site out --> http://mobilitytoday.com/news/007194/blackjack_mac_connection
It's a write up on how to get the Samsung BlackJack working with OSX, BlackJack I believe also use PAN.
I tried it, but wasn't able to get it to work. I have to leave the office right now, so maybe someone else might have better luck than I do.

working with p3600
It seems working with a P3600 using the new network sharing feature with the USB Cable! The mac sees a ethernet port (with ip already asigned by p3600)under systempreferences>network.
I donnu if its because i have missing sync (demo) installed that that connection just comes up...
cheers..
Update: Working on MBP CoreDuo...
I've got the dash, and I set it and my macbook pro to be discoverable, went thru the wizard on the mac side which found no usable services, then enabled the "internet sharing" app on my dash, and immediately selected the "join network with tmobile43" option on the bluetooth menu on my mac, and volia! i'm typing this to you via this connection.
Solid! Now if only bluetooth charged the battery
tmobile dash bluetooth modem problem
Ok this is wat i have to say i have a macbook and when i go to bluetooth setting it says in can use the kind of network interface that ur powerbook doesnt support and the reason ur powerbook doesnt support it is either u need to upgrade ur airport card or mabye upgrade to leopard like i did or do both because im running my macbook with the 802.11n wireless and bluetooth card and with 10.5 so that might be a solution to ur problem and i also know that u should upgrade to a macbook or a macbook pro if u want excelent peformance or heavily upgrade ur powerbook g4 and anyway wat are the specs on ur powerbook??
(macbook white 2.0 ghz 80gb hd and 2 gigs of ram)
sorry i put in powerbook for some reason i meant to say wat mac do u have
It seems to me that OS X (Leopard at least) wants to use the Network Access Point Bluetooth profile with Bluetooth PAN. I got it working with WM6.1 but I had to change Bluetooth PAN from PANU to NAT.
See ]Fixing 0803xx Bluetooth PAN on OS X 10.5.

Bluetooth PAN client

I've got desktop PC with Linux and bluetooth but without WiFi so I am using BT PAN network access point service on the desktop PC and BT PAN client on my notebook to connect wireless when at home. Both are BT 2.0+EDR so the speed is about 3.0Mbps.
I've got Hermes with WM6 5.2.1933 and MS BT stack.
Is there a way I can connect to Internet over BT PAN?
I know there is some bluetooth PAN support as it can be used in Internet sharing but I haven't figured out how to connect to existing BT PAN network.
Any advice?
it's not for linux but you should read this one
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=InternetOverBluetoothNetwork
Thank you, it looks promising, I was able to find my bluetooth PAN interface and setup IP and DNS for it but I am unable to find any "Join a personal network" button in my bluetooth settings.
Where can I find the damn button?
OK, so just to close the topic...
the problem is in MS bluetooth stack which doesn't support bluetooth PAN client profile. The only solution for now is to install cracked Widcomm bluetooth stack on devices which originally came with the MS one. The project for this can be found on XDA wiki.
Current status for the Hermes (my sweety) is that you can make it work, can have BT PAN client but some other things doesn't work correctly (bt on/off in comm manager, bt audio profile doesn't work very well, ...).
What bout use WM6 with Internet haring Feature, that's all the stuff related to sharing internet using Bluetooth.
Regards,
Taguapire.
Internet Connection Sharing is the other way around: you can use your WM6 device as a PAN access point, and the PC (e.g. a notebook) is the PAN client.
KOPRajs, you can use ActiveSync over Bluetooth. On the PC you need SynCE (http://www.synce.org/). The wiki there is currently under construction, and I can't find anything about Bluetooth now, but there's a Howto for Ubuntu over at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=50932 .
Thx, I have actually SynCE working (even over bluetooth) but I was unable to set up MS proxy (or whatever it is) so even when it's connected, apps on the phone do not know about active connection and tries to dial up a GPRS instead of using Active Sync connection.
And more, the whole SynCE thing is highly unstable yet so that's why would be nice to use BT PAN client.

Apple Mac and HD2

I can't seem to able to connect the HD2 to my MacBook Pro, other than as a external HD drive. Which is fine for exchanging files, an dI don't need Activesync or the Vista version. But I do want to use it as a modem. Either via Bluetooth, a cable or as Wif Router. And though I am usually quite handy with these kind of things, I can't get any of them to work. So hopefully someone has made it to work, and can let me know the tricks?
Same problem here, but I'm able to connect to my SD card. What I do is to put all the update file in to SD card and run it.
Hello,
You should find in the programs on your HD2 one called Wifi Router.
Running it, you will be able to choose a name for your network and choose the key (WEP only)
Than from your Mac by clicking on the Airport icon, you should see your newly created network under "Devices". Just connect to it with the WEP key you determined and there you go !
WifI router is a great application. Working fine on a MS machine (XP, Vista). But it;s not stable with my Macbook/Apple. It's hard to get an connection (even find it), and only connects for a short time. I have not been able to get one biy in to webbrowser or mail. It just disconnects and says no internet connection...
Sorry to hear that =(
Using it on 2 Macbooks without any issues (stable and fast connection)
Works fine for me sorry! Submit it to HTC see what they say...
Same problem here between my new HD2 and macbook pro... Unable to connect to internet using Bluetooth/USB connection. WiFi router connect but internet connection don't work. Any solution?
PS : sharing files via USB or bluetooth is possible.
Looks like it is something of the new generation Macbook. Before I bought the apple, i was able to test it in an apple shop. It worked (Wifi Router)! As I said: no USB connection, no BT connection and not via WiFi Router. However it does work as an external Harddisk. It should be the settings in the Macbook to make Wi-Fi Router work! It connects (now and again, but not stable) But no internet according to Safari (for you guys/girls whom still own a dinosaur: that's the browser..). Settings of Macbook Pro???
I'm currently trying to find a way.
There is a software called "USBModem" from Mobile Stream that allow Windows Mobile USB and bluetooth connexion for Mac users.
I'm working actually with support team (very reactive!) for HD2 to be compatible with this software.
Hope they will be abble to make something great
Unfortunately, Mobile Stream Team can't make anything for HD2<=>Mac USB connexion
If somebody has a solution...
I started the thread, may be I can end it. Strangely enough, outside of my home Wifi area, I can get the connection between HD2's Wifi router and my Macbook. At home, somehow my HD2 tries to contact at the same the home network, and therefore does not get a stable connection with my Apple. So it's great: outside it works, inside I have a network and no need for tethering...

Bluetooth or usb tethering on wifi version(P900)

Anyone know if it's possible to tether either via usb or bluetooth with the p900?
I just want a network connection between the two to use for ssh/telnet with Juice ssh and remote keyboard.
I can't use hotspot as I need be able to connect to the internet over my macbook's wifi. Public networks usually don't allow 2 devices to talk to each other so it doesn't work over wifi.
Ignore.
For anyone that has this issue on a Macbook you need to go into networks and makes sure that the Bluetooth PAN connects. It doesn't happen automatically as it does for my other android devices
The Note Pro is then accessible at 192.168.44.1
Actually I just connected to my phone as the bluetooth was on. So still a question is the P900 capable of bluetooth networking?
I tried the Bluetooth PAN app on the app store and it complains that the executable file /system/bin/pand is missing. Does anyone know of a way to add this in?
In case anyone else needs this USB tethering works fine using Valera1978's port of CyanogenMod 12.1.
