Not all usb bluetooth dongles are equal

I bought a usb bluetooth dongle which used xtndconnect software, no joy at all with syncing my xda2, no serial profile that I could discern and basically all I could do was beam files back and forth. I saw on ebay a cheap usb dongle that supported voice gateway, there was no disc with it, just a link to download the widicom software from the sellers site, any way I installed it, I bonded my xda2 with the pc, the xda2 asked me did I wish to use my pc as a headset, I answered yes. I then went to bluetooth setup on xda2 and told it to use bluetooth activesync, it gave an error, saying "bond with serial profile" or something, I thought it was another brick wall dead end, then up popped a message, "activesync setup complete". I then opened activesync on the desktop and it works great. Also if I use my phone while in range of the pc it diverts the audio to my pc speakers and I can use my pc mic to answer. The dongle cost less than £20 in uk. I have to initiate sync by bluetooth on xda2.

The only thing I cant do is browse the web through the bluetooth even when synched, it insists on dialling a number. Can anybody give me the settings, pass thru works with usb connection.

I now have full internet access over bluetooth. I can even access it from downstairs while my pc is upstairs, solid connection, no dropping of signal and very fast compared to dialup over gsm.

I have just purchased a class 1 dongle with 100m range, and use the software you mention through my laptop on windows XP Pro.
How did you set up the xda to web browse using bluetooth and your PC broadband connection ?

I set up all the services I required, then on desktop of your pc click My bluetooth places, choose "my network access". After double clicking on that, click properties, there is a drop down box above "configure network adaptor" choose "allow internet access". Now as long as you are synced you can access the internet. When setting up activesync on xda2, make sure you havent bonded with any other item, go to settings/system/bluetooth, choose "activesync over bluetooth" make sure bluetooth is in "discover" mode beforehand, from there it should search and find the serial port on the pc and should work when you click activesync from programs, then at the bottom left options screen choose "sync by bluetooth". Hope this helps. I could not get any of this to work using another dongle that was using xtndconnect. By the way, the xda2 is very limited in its range for bluetooth regardless of the dongle on your pc.

I've just received my VOIP bluetooth dongle (Same as yours? PenBlue?) and got it working with ActiveSync and browsing the Interweb with the XDA2 over bluetooth. Awesome!
Can't work out how to get the network working, though. Scanning other topics here, there seems to be no way without installing the 'new' (Widcomm?) bluetooth stack on the XDA2, and enabling Internet Connection Sharing on the PC. I'd rather not clutter up the XDA2 with another BT stack, and I'm certainly not enabling ICS and buggering up my LAN settings here, just to get the network.
Can you suggest anything? You've been fairly quiet on this subject - wondered whether this PenBlue dongle makes it possible without all this dual-BT-stack skullduggery.

how could I use my wizard as a modem over GPRS for my Macbook pro?

I just went into Mac world and got my first mac laptop two weeks ago.
My wizard had already been upgraded to WM6.
In PC world, it's quite simple to use it as a modem over GPRS. Just turn on internet sharing.
How can I make it happen for Macbook pro?

if you still have you cd that came with your phone there should be a driver/how to on it for wm5 tethering.
wm6 pretty much your right just turn on internet sharing first then connect to GPRS and then plug it into you mac.
im sorry its off the top of my head but im sure that's it. im not at home at the moment. I don't think there is anything else to it. if I left anything out please someone correct me.

While its for setting up a Mac / Linux / Other as a client to an XP box doing ICS, it should be the same with your phone being the ICS server (I think).

I just stepped into the Mac world myself with a 15" MBP myself and I love it!
Using Bluetooth, it is VERY easy.
Turn Phone and MBP Bluetooth on, pair the device if you have not done so using "Set up Bluetooth Device".
Make sure your phone is connected to the internet. Load IE or Messaging and make sure it's connected. Then you can quit that program.
Load Internet Sharing on the phone.
PC Connection should be Bluetooth PAN.
Network Connection should be Cingular GPRS (Or similar)
Then hit Connect on the bottom left of the screen.
Now on the Mac, click the Bluetooth Icon in the top right of the screen and choose Join Network On ... (Phones name)
Thats it, you will now be using the phones internet.

Internet Connection Sharing over WiFi

I desperately need to get ICS over WiFi working. I've tried WMWiFiRouter, but it either keeps giving me 'Fatal Error' or the connection drops off the moment the PC connects to it. I've also tried ICSControl.exe, a program that someone on XDA has created, but I just couldn't figure out how to get things going with that (or I'm too dumb).
Could someone please tell me the easiest way to get my data connection working on my laptop over Wifi? I'm using Raphael with the stock rom.

its built in i think in the commanager last option. but it is set to bluetooth pan standard if i am correct.
you can try use advanced config 3.1 and goto data connections.. change private interface for internet sharing to wlan.

i was surprised to see Advanced Config had the option there. But it still doesn't work
I changed the private interface from the default of 'Custom' to WLAN11g1 and it asks me to soft-reset the device, which i did. Then I go into Internet Sharing, and I still only get 'USB' or 'Bluetooth PAN' as options. Am i missing something?

there is another wlan option in there.

one would think that setting this option would set the setting to wlan as supposed to. not sure if you should change it or not afterwards with the connectionsharingsettingstab. it probably overwrites the value in registry.
here is something you can try :
turn on wifi
set the option in adv config to TnetWln1
reset
turn on this wifi AP application and try using it

Just tried WMwifiRouter on my Touch Pro and it worked fine

Works fine for me too. Takes all the hassle out of it!

2 questions:
1) Which network are you with? If your connection works but stops when you get ICS to try to connect, it may be blocked by your network if a) you are not allowed to use your mobile as a modem and/or b) ICS is not allowed. Does your connection work with standard email/web?
2) Why sharing your connection over wifi when BT pan works so well and so easily and you only need to share with your laptop? I use wifi when the laptop can connect directly to a router/hotspot, otherwise I use BT Pan. There is no real speed compromise as the bottleneck is the 3G connection itself), and BT 2.0 EDR offers a wide enough bandwidth for what you want to do. I use skype on my laptop with my 3G connection shared over BT PAN and it works a treat (that is, better than Skype 2.2 on WM!).

ICS has nothing to do with your carrier. It works the same way on your phone as it does on the pc. it merely routes the gateway to the devices connected to the ICS network.
I myself have a TP and use ICS with Softbank (softbank roms do not contain ICS) and it works fine.
I agree with you however, when it comes to bluetooth. Even if your PC doesnt have BT, it is well worth it to buy one of those nifty mini adapters.
they are so tiny, you wont even see them. But easy to setup and fast enough.

im with 3. nomal mail / web works fine. there are no restrictions by the network for ics. as for the BT question, I dont have BT on my laptop. it has built in wifi and i want to use that. i also have a mac n have never managed 2 get BT PAN working with os x.

Can't get BT pan to work with Vista either. My laptop does not "find" the HTC Touch pro as a pan enabled phone.

Version 0.91 is the last "free" version of the program. It is no longer free and it's version number has changed as well, version 1.11 is the latest.

First make sure you have no active BT connection, either on your desktop/laptop or on the TP (i.e. BT Headset).
You need to go to Comm Manager (BT switched on of course!), select BT Options (lower right menu), Mode, and select "make this device visible to other devices".
Once you've setup a partnership, it will probably say "connection denied" on the first connection.
Don't be as dumb as me, got to internet sharing (all programs) and select BT Pan and Connect... Then try to connect BT Pan again...
It *should* work (works a treat on my Vista 32 desktop and my Sony TZ11 Laptop, I get around 400-500kbps down and a bit less up).

I followed your directions exactly, but the problem remains. I get however once the phone pairs with the laptop (HP tx2000) a request for the "Bluetooth peripheral device" driver. I can't find this driver so it has probably something to do with this.

Maybe you should try IcsControl.
It's free and works great.

Id go wmwifirouter route. I have never had good luck with icscontrol never could get it to work and it pissed me off instead

You need to update the bluetooth driver for your laptop. Check the manufacturer (in, the device manager), usually widcomm or toshiba, and try to get it from their website if HP doesn't provide it (although they should). Vista drivers usually work, but I guess you're using XP? It may be worth checking on HP website to see if their offer updated BT drivers for your laptop.

I've tried both versions of the program (free old V0.91 and trial for the commercial V1.11).
They both work with the Touch Pro (tried with my Vaio TZ11).
V1.11 is however around 20% faster (I get an average of 500kbps with V0.91, and consistently above 600kbps down with the V1.11).
So the old version gives about the same bandwidth as my BT Pan (without the convenience of sharing between more than one client), while the V1.11 seems to be better optimised and provides better bandwidth.
The response time is around 100ms for both (against around 140ms for BT Pan). Upstream is around 300kbps for both version , against 400kbps for BT Pan.
This is on a UK T-Mobile HSDPA connection, with 3/4 bars signal strength (could those who manage to get it to work let us know if they get better figures?).
You should obviously get much better with Vodafone in a 7.2Mbps area like London/Major airports.

Apple Mac and HD2

I can't seem to able to connect the HD2 to my MacBook Pro, other than as a external HD drive. Which is fine for exchanging files, an dI don't need Activesync or the Vista version. But I do want to use it as a modem. Either via Bluetooth, a cable or as Wif Router. And though I am usually quite handy with these kind of things, I can't get any of them to work. So hopefully someone has made it to work, and can let me know the tricks?

Same problem here, but I'm able to connect to my SD card. What I do is to put all the update file in to SD card and run it.

You should find in the programs on your HD2 one called Wifi Router.
Running it, you will be able to choose a name for your network and choose the key (WEP only)
Than from your Mac by clicking on the Airport icon, you should see your newly created network under "Devices". Just connect to it with the WEP key you determined and there you go !

WifI router is a great application. Working fine on a MS machine (XP, Vista). But it;s not stable with my Macbook/Apple. It's hard to get an connection (even find it), and only connects for a short time. I have not been able to get one biy in to webbrowser or mail. It just disconnects and says no internet connection...

Same problem here between my new HD2 and macbook pro... Unable to connect to internet using Bluetooth/USB connection. WiFi router connect but internet connection don't work. Any solution?

Looks like it is something of the new generation Macbook. Before I bought the apple, i was able to test it in an apple shop. It worked (Wifi Router)! As I said: no USB connection, no BT connection and not via WiFi Router. However it does work as an external Harddisk. It should be the settings in the Macbook to make Wi-Fi Router work! It connects (now and again, but not stable) But no internet according to Safari (for you guys/girls whom still own a dinosaur: that's the browser..). Settings of Macbook Pro???

I'm currently trying to find a way.
There is a software called "USBModem" from Mobile Stream that allow Windows Mobile USB and bluetooth connexion for Mac users.
I'm working actually with support team (very reactive!) for HD2 to be compatible with this software.
Hope they will be abble to make something great

I started the thread, may be I can end it. Strangely enough, outside of my home Wifi area, I can get the connection between HD2's Wifi router and my Macbook. At home, somehow my HD2 tries to contact at the same the home network, and therefore does not get a stable connection with my Apple. So it's great: outside it works, inside I have a network and no need for tethering...

[Q] Bluetooth tethering & USB Keyboard support

I know that the CM 6.1 supports the USB Keyboard/mouse, but what are the odds of getting the Bluetooth DUN tethering support ported over from the Archos 101 and 70 devices? Would love to hear some insight from the devs about the feasibility of having such a feature. I would love to leave my EVO tethered to the GTab over Bluetooth instead of Wifi. It would be a huge battery saver when I'm away from home/office wifi connection.
Also, USB Keyboard/mouse as a part of TnT? Possible? Worth it? Not worth it?

I second the above. BT stays on 24/7 on my phone, it would be much easier, and ideally we could eventually come up with some sort of on-demand script or app that keeps the BT DUN profile active, without battery drain on the cell.
With this in place, the gTab could connect and disconnect to the cell phone as needed, just like DUN should be. Best case scenario is to not even have to do anything on the phone, just enable BT on the gTab (or leave enabled as desired) and do some activity that accesses the internet. This would trigger a BT DUN connection to the phone, which disconnects after a certain period of inactivity (or manually, as desired).
If I knew a damn thing about how to program, this is what I would be trying to create.
That said, I'm a willing guinea pig.

Bluetooth Tethering a High Wish List Item
For me, getting the tablet to tether via bluetooth to my Blackberry Tour would be a high priority wish list item. I am completely in the dark with this stuff but I can tether my PC to my Blackberry so I should in theory be able to tether and use the network connection. I realize that most folks here probably have an Android-base smartphone, but my company makes me carry around their smartphone (and has the decency to pay for unlimited data plan). If I could get the tablet to work from the BB's network connection I would be almost complete on my wish list. I have gotten to the point of paring the two devices (but can't seem to get them to connect). I am using tnt lite 2.02 and my 9630 device has v 4.7.1.40 with 3G, CDMA connections.

Indeed, the hope would be that the BT stack within the gTab can take advantage of BT Dial up networking or Personal area networking profiles. Then we would be good to go. If not now, hopefully we can find a way to get that to work.

I am extremely interested in a Bluetooth tethering solution for the gtab. It's the only way I will be able to get a 3G connection from my phone that won't be policed at work (non-corporate wifi hotspots are monitored).

I have a Nexus One Adnroid phone (running Froyo 2.2.1). I use the Wifi hotspot feature when I want hop online with my G-Tab (my work monitors wifi, as well but I only turn it on as I need it.) I can't speak for BlackBerry phones but any "rooted" Android phone should be able to act as a 3G/4G hotspot.

Wifi tethering should be faster, but USB tethering and keyboard & mouse support are needed and should work in the first place. (keyboard and mouse support at least should).

Need a program like http://android.gval.biz/ or ibluever for iphone/itouch then the g tablet would be my laptop replacement for traveling .

I've tried to run this on VEGAn ROM, configured but at the moment when It suppose to scan for Channels, it exits of message "Failed To connect to SDP server on device Blackberry 9000".... ideas?

I believe PDAnet requires client windows/mac software, and they haven't written client Android software.
I haven't seen anyone port the Archos home-grown BT tether to any other brand. BT tether isn't part of Android (I'm betting the cellcos in OHA demanded it not be built).
My wife has Joikuspot on her phone, so she wifi tethers on the G-tab.
I have unlimited bluetooth data, so I bought an Archos.

You are right PDANet wont work as no client for Android, but from my experience listed above blackberry refusing connections.... or may be GTab just doesn't opening connection properly.
When I check GTable BT device property from Blackberry side it can do only:
Handsfree Audio Gateway
Headset Audio Gateway
Object Push
AV Remote Control Target
.... there is no DUN in the list, so I suspect it just not supported by BT stack on device.... but also I have in same my laptop listed as well which doesnt have DUN in its services
