[QUES] 3G Radio bands - Dash 3G, Snap ROM Development

So it looks like TMO is using 1700/2100 for 3G while AT&T is using 850/1900 MHz. So basically the Dash3G is useless on AT&T for 3G.
Does anyone know if flashing the radio part on the Maple with one that has the correct frequencies will enable 3G on AT&T's network? Or are the radio frequencies a hardware thing? I know the SNAP S522 is the true USA version with the correct bands I just have no way of getting my hands on the radio partition.
I want 3G on my Dash"3G".

Firstly - thanks very much for all the ROM's and your hard work!
I'm a long time browser of these forums, but don't post much. Also a long time user and "flasher"!!! All the way back to the old MPX200 days. Always liked WM Standard, so it's realy good to see all this interest!!!
HTC seems to have been real cagey in their frequency descriptions when it comes to the Dash 3G series of phones. I read somewhere that there are software driven transcievers in some obscure phones out there......and I wonder if HTC actualy did this with their latest and greatest....
Just thinking out loud, per your question. When you look at the spec sheets, they seem to be "non-commital with regards to wcdma specs.
Hmm.
Also, it'd be good to have a set of radio only ROM's, as and when we see T-Mob USA fixes.. there needs to be some improvements made with regards to switching between edge and wcdma - in my opinion. I'm in the DFW area and get dropped calls, the phone drops to edge way too often, especially after a call.

OK - So does this work on Next G

Alright, I know this has probably been covered some where, and I know that this is a "world wide site", and I know this is all going to sound stupid given the answer is in my own post, but a question:
I am really liking the look of this phone, and I want to get one (when ever it comes out), but in Australia, our largest HSDPA network is Telstra NextG, which is 850 band. Looking at the specifications for the machine (this site had everything well laid out):
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_touch_pro-2413.php
It states the European/Asian version will be HSDPA 900/2100. So I am going to guess that I can not use it on the Next G network with this version of the phone. Correct?
Also, the site states that the Americas (US) version is 850/1900.
So, I assume I have to get a phone from the US to use it on Telstra's Next G. Is this correct, or is there some other quirk that I do not know (like some CDMA difference or something)?
Thank you for homouring me
Correct, the NextG network will not work on this phone at present. Also correct, it will work on the US version. Here's the nice part though...
One of our members was nice enough to leak a version of the new AT&T ROM for the upcoming Raphael in the US, and since the hardware is all the same, HOPEFULLY flashing with that ROM will enable the 850mhz HSDPA band you and I both need. I'll be testing this on a Raphael when it releases in Europe, and I'll have a post up very quickly in this section letting people know how it went. If it works, you can buy any version and flash it (only takes 5 mins) for it to work in AUS.
Edit: Don't listen to GSMArena, HTC lists this phone as quad-band although they say it's tri-band.

The above sounds good. I really do not want to go down the road of a Telstra locked phone (not that Telstra will release this one). I await your tests with anticipation.

Yeah, well, I figure if it doesn't work (hoping it doesn't brick it) I'll just resell it for like $25 less and it's not much of a loss for trying.
I don't know much about Australian telephone networks, but I've always wanted to go there and see what it feels like to be upside down all the time.

Haha, seems like one of the nicest vacation spots in the world. Can't wait to go there someday.
Here is a photo of the Australian system:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffwerner/278050267/
The Australian networks arent too bad. We have a choice of frequencies here. Telstra have the 850mhz 3G band and Optus and Vodafone are each expanding their exisiting 2100 3G network using 900mhz which will be launched over the next few months. The good thing about Raphael is that it will work on the 2100 and 900 3G bands and given that Telstra's voice and data plans are ridiculous many of those who want to use data on it wont care about the absence of 850...this is good news. However if the device can be flashed to work for everyone...even better.
As for the photo of the Australian networks that was a network similar to what I built in Sydney in the early 80's. A large carrier paid me a small fortune to decommision it as it was making them look bad!!
I'm also in Australia and plan to get this phone from one of the UK stores as I can't wait for 3 odd months for it to be released here. Now I'm sure there might be a few aussies here who have ordered from online stores outside Aus. What I wanna know is if I might have to pay any import duty on my purchase? If I buy from expansys uk, the unit will cost me roughly AU$920, but with bank fees and shipping charges, I would have paid $1010. I know that import duties are applicable if the cost of the unit is $1000. So does this count for me as well?
I just want to avoid paying more that I should.
However, I need Next G
Thanks all for your input on this. I was pretty sure that the phone would not work on the NExt G nextwork if I bought one (from say an internet dealer in Sydney or Melbourne), but as you can see from my "location", I need Next G. There is not 3G nextwork in the Top End except Telstra Next G (Or at least none that cover all of Darwin and its area adequately. Anyway I don't knock Telstra too much).
Further to that, I work away a lot and once again, Next G is OK (note I only said OK) for outside of major cities, and Telstra GSM is good for most rural townships also.
Anyway, I suppose my upgrade will be to a TyTN II to replace my old phone, at least it has the 850 band that I need for Next G.
Cheers and beers

The Diamonds were listed as Tri-Band too, but now every Diamond is quad-band since they came out with the newer ROM. Same with the Touch Pro, some ROMs (apparently that nation's) don't support quad-band, but in time (or with a quick reflash) they will.

Thnx finally some clarification...
But still strange that our countries HTC would not enable that bandwith. They state it's a business phone. But business often means travelling arround the globe. Quadband would then be preffered above tri-band....
But black you know for sure the bandwith can be activated by just software? Some people say you need a different antenna. (I'm a noob in that area...).
Thnx anyway!

The GSM antennas are all in every Diamond, the problem is with the UMTS radio. To keep the Diamonds so small, HTC had to remove the American UMTS radio, making it so you can't use a European Diamond to get 3G in the US ever. Likewise, the American Diamond will only have the US bands of 3G (850 and 1900). As for the GSM bands, though, EVERY Diamond has the capability to be quad-band, so you'll at least get EDGE wherever you go. Hope this clears things up.

Just wondering if anyone had n update as to the effect of the new radio rom in the touch pro. I understand the US issue was different with a release of GSM only touch pros (Booo Hissss) but would realy like to confirm if we are able to reflash to expand on the UMTS frequencies here in Aus making the touch pro UMTS tri or quad band.
Thanks for all the info in this post too.
I'm wondering if someone has worked out how to get the extra band to work in Australia as well. I am on Next G and my brand new phone simply sucks right now and I'm hoping I don't have to go over to a different carrier when my contract is up. I kinda like Telstra Next G, dare I say it.

As far as I know it works fine with an ATT Fuze with a regular touch pro you'll never get NextG on the 850 band, it's a hardware limitation.

[Q]3G on the HTC Raphael/Touch Pro

Is the HTC Touch Pro able to work on U.S 3G band , if not is there a radio patch that will activate the U.S band on the device. Please help.
This is a very hot topic on this forum but so far from what i've been able to see none of the radios have enabled 3G. This is not to say that 3G isn't supported by the hardware although its looking pretty grim. It appears that the ELITE team is working on this since they just released Hardspl

We shall see what happens, although the bands are available in the "band" settings tab so it MAY be a radio issue.
Bit early to know yet, as there is only one user here so far who has hold of an AT&T Fuze (RAPH11000) we dont have a huge ammount of detail yet.
Both the newer 1.02.25.31 and 1.02.25.19 radios seem to have similar protocols (same QCT_BOOT and HTC_BOOT), it would be good if any user could flash the (apparently) older 1.02.25.11 radio and see if it does anything?
I really wish i could help out on this 3G front but no 3G in my area...
I can help...

I have the 1.02.25.19 radio here in Chicago. I know I have good 3G coverage from my TyTN II that I had previously. But why would you think the OLDER radio (1.02.25.11) would have U.S. 3G? ...jus curious.

Its bundled with the AT&T ROM which is currently on the AT&T Fuze devices people are testing.
Higher radio version number doesnt necessarily mean a better one, as veterans of the Hermes will verify
The overseas Touch Pro cannot get 3G in the US. Just like the Diamond, the Touch Pro from overseas (RAPH100) does not have a WCDMA 850 radio.
Flash all the radios you guys want... it's not going to get you 3G on the 850 band. You'll have to wait for the US version/ATT Fuze if you're in the US and want 3G data.
Anyone know when AT&T sould release US version/ATT Fuze?

Until we have tested newer ROMs and radios that statement is pure speculation. MANY devices have had missing bands and etc...but have had them unlocked in ROM and Radio updates so it is too early to be writing off 3G support yet.
I have a TouchPro coming tomorrow. I called HTC today and (although I have about as much confidence in this as the paper I wrote this on) I was told by a lower level tech (I think he knew what I was talking about) that a "software" upgrade would allow for the European 3G enabled device to work in the US for 3G
... I sure hope so since I forked out the cash today
The Treo 750 didn't even start out 3G capable at all and was made 3G able with a ROM upgrade
Hoping
Hardware
Maybe a very stupid question, but what about openning up an eu version to see if the quad radio hardware is there? I would assume the radio chipset would be labeled and numbered so that we would know once and for all.

I thought about this but cracking open a 900 dollar device and completely voiding the warranty really isn't worth it. If someone can get schematic from HTC which i doubt we could see if the hardware is installed.

I believe there is an asian hardware version, this is what the HTC techs keep mentioning that might have the 850 3G radio.
I have a case into HTC support asking them to answer the question for me around if the radio is hardware capable of 3G in the US and explained what bands I was talking about and that it was in the software to enable those. I Posed the question as if I was unhappy that I was selecting these bands and it wasnt working to try to get an answer out of them will report back when I am answered one way or another.

Just so you know - I sent a similar email to them regarding the 850 band on the Diamond and I was sent a very nice response informing me that the phone I purchased was not intended for the US and did not have the hardware capability to be used on ATT in the US. Low and behold the xda developers made the 850 band work. Now HTC offers a rom upgrade opening the 850 band they said was not in phone. Unfortunately the response you get will not be the definitive answer.

I understand yours and others' reasons for not believing me or assuming it's speculation. All I can say is there will be a lot of effort put forth for no reason, just like with the DIAM100, only to confim that the hardware everyone is trying to unlock isn't even there. If the efforts put forth do nothing more than prove the above to be true, then at the very least people can rest more easily with full confirmation.

HTC Fuze (AT&T) on Telstra NextG (Australia)

I currently have an HTC Touch Pro that I got when my work used Optus as a provider. Shortly after that, they moved to Telstra, so I've been on the old 3G (non NextG) speeds ever since :-S
A work collogue just gave me an HTC FUZE - which as I understand it is a US AT&T branded version, which supports the 850Mhz UTMS frequency that Telstra requires for their NextG network. (There also seems to be an extra button?) Some threads here seem to indicate it should work at NextG speeds which is encouraging.
Can someone tell mw what the best options are to set this up? I'm hoping it's unlocked, but I saw some unlocking instructions on the Wiki. Am I able to load the stock standard world wide TTC Pro ROM from the HTC Australian site? Or will the different frequency support mess it up?
Should I use the standard AT&T ROM from the HTC US site (I don't really want the AT&T branding, but it seems to have features like slide-to-answer which would be nice).
Or will I have to go down a cooked ROM path? (Stability is the prime importance here). Any suggestions of a good ROM that supports the FUZE?
Thanks!
As long as your network has 850mhz support, it should be fine. The Fuze has the most frequency support of any phone, and definitely supports NextG's HSDPA and HSUPA networks.
As for the ROM, its really a matter of preference, doesn't affect frequency support. Though for better reception and battery life you might want to look into replacing your radio ROM (its in a sticky in the ROM section).

[q] radio question!!

I have an HTC HD7 (T-Mobile) and I am contemplating flashing it...I have noticed that I can put new radio versions. I have looked up what a radio is but I just want to be 100% clear...IF I INSTALL A NEW RADIO ON MY PHONE DOES THAT MEAN THAT IT WILL HAVE THOSE 3G/4G BANDS? If so this is amazing, if not then what's the point when SuperCid will SIM unlock the phone?
*faceplam*
Radio updates are firmware updates like every other. You can't physically put more radios, or radios that work on different bands, or radios that work on different modulation, into the phone just using a CAB file.
Radio updates do things like improving the software drivers for the phone's radios (WiFi, Cellular, BlueTooth, and so forth), which may give you better data connections, fewer dropped calls, more seamless tower switching, or new purely-software features like tethering support. However, the bands that the phone can access are decided by the hardware present inside it.
Radios add to a phone's cost, which is why you see relatively few quad/quintuple-band phones; it's cheaper to just support the bands most used in the area (or on the carrier) that any given phone is meant to be sold in. An HD7 branded for TMoUS won't be able to use the 3G bands (and doesn't have *any* 4G radios) used by AT&T; the same is true of an AT&T HD7S on TMoUS.
As for why you would SIM-unlock in that case, there are a few reasons. For one, you can usually get EDGE (a late-2G tech, but much slower than 3G) on any given band the phone supports. For another, even with no data connection at all you can usually get voice and SMS on any GSM network. Finally, some networks *do* use the same 3G bands, so by sim-unlocking you can switch to those networks and get the same type of service you had before.

So adding radios to the phone makes it quad/quintuple-band phone? What I'm trying to understand is how you used "Radio but then translated it to the number of bands on a phone
Strictly speaking, it's probably only one physical radio device (although I don't know for sure), but there may be a couple of antennas... I'm not going to try explaining radio physics here, but it will suffice to say that for a phone to access more bands requires more investment in its radio hardware.
"Band" as used here is radio lingo for "a grouping of similar frequencies allocated to a single purpose" such as the 900MHz GSM cellular band, or the commercial broadcast AM band (which spans the frequency 900KHz - a factor of 1000 difference). If you're old enough, you probably remember analog TV broadcast, which included "VHF" and "UHF" bands.
Okay! That makes so much sense! Thanks for the clarification man!

[Q] Clean Rom Question [Network]

Hi Guys,
So I've been running Clean Rom for roughly 6 months now, still running version 5.1 (Android Version 4.0.4) on my HTC ONE XL.
My One XL is a Telstra branded phone and thus has the capability for 850MHz. I was running on the Vodafone network and therefore not using said band, however I have recently swapped over to Telstra (Was never with them in the first place).
Unfortunately I'm not seeing the gains in reception I was hoping for, and I am currently finding that when going to locations where there should be signal, albeit edge, crappy signal, I am receiving none. My question is, does Clean Rom disable the 850MHz frequency or does it still support it? Is there a way I can check whether I am accessing the 850MHz network, and if so, how? If it isn't am I able to turn on th 850MHz frequency?
Looking forward to getting this sorted. Cheers.
ROM shouldn't make much difference in band compatibility. Since your version supports 850 MHz for both 2G (EDGE) and 3G, it should work regardless of ROM, and you don't need to "turn it on". There are "secret codes" you can enter into the dialer that will tell you information about the bands, and also signal strength. Just use the XDA search function, and you should be able to find them.
You might see some slight improvement if you are not currently on a Jellybean radio, and flash one (if hboot 2.14 or higher, you will need to s-off). But I wouldn't bet on it making a huge difference.
What makes you think you should have (crappy) reception in the mentioned locations? From reception on another phone? Every phone is different (antenna design, etc.). Since you mentioned the reception at the location is already crappy, its probably more of a antenna issue than a ROM issue.

I'm not sure where you're located, Telstra is the largest Telco in Australia with the largest and best coverage. Vodafone unfortunately has a very bad reputation for reception. Swapping from Vodafone which does not use an 850MHz band to Telstra, which does, has netted me reverse effects. I am receiving worse reception, which should not be the case. If I go into fringe areas where edge is the best signal you receive, I will receive none, where as in town locations where more than the 850 band is used, I receive okay signal. Just seems like I'm not picking up the 850 band.
As I already mentioned, search for the "secret" dialer codes. There are codes that will tell you the cell tower signal, and I believe band, which sounds like what you need.
None of the dialer codes seem to allow me to see what particular frequency I'm using. Unless I'm just completely missing something? The only thing that seems to provide me with info on the radio only states Network Type and the DBM.
