Loccy's BetterBrowser - now in Donut edition (v1.5: 8th Oct 11am/BST) - G1 Android Development

The important bit - get it here:
Version 1.5 (Donut - also Hero)
Version 1.5 (Cupcake)
I've changed the hosting of these files from 4shite. You shouldn't now have any problems downloading. The new links are hosted at www.androidspin.com - thanks guys!
Optimised version of V1.5 (Donut) (thanks Dwang)
Optimised version of 1.5 (Cupcake) (thanks Hotweiss)
(note ref the optimised versions; Dwang's works fine on my Magic but I haven't tested Hotweiss's. If you have problems try the originals instead.)
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT VERSION! READ THE CHANGE LOG (in post 2) TO SEE WHAT'S NEW.
Older versions can be found at the bottom of this post.
So what actually is this?
This is a new build of the stock browser, that incorporates the multitouch code from Cyan's build, along with some additional code of my own, primarily intended to make zooming less painful, and looking to gradually move towards an experience as rich as the Hero browser.
What does it do that's new, then?
* option in settings to disable the obnoxious on-screen zoom buttons that usually appear whenever you so much as breathe on the screen (turn off "Visual Zoom Controls" in the menu to get rid of them - off by default).
* when Visual Zoom Controls is disabled, option in settings to add zoom in and zoom out to the menu (although this will bump over options that are normally on the main menu to the "More..." list)
* Double-tap the screen to zoom in. When it gets too ginormous (about four zooms) a subsequent double-tap will zoom all the way out. Or you can just change this in the settings so double-tap always zooms in. Obviously it still has the multitouch option too from Cyan's code.
* Triple-tap to zoom out! (which I am particularly pleased about given that such an event doesn't actually exist in Android )
* Click top-right corner to pull down address bar. Click top-left corner to go back to homepage. Click top-left when on homepage to exit browser (i.e. "clear" it from memory insofar as Android apps ever get cleared from memory).
* Click bottom left to go to previous tab, bottom right to go to next tab.
* Maintain zoom level across a domain, so that when you get a comfortable viewing size, you don't lose it the second you move to the next page on a site.
* Maximum number of tabs increased from 8 to 32.
* As requested by fastludeh22, an option for "Mobile Web Settings". Select from Android, iPhone or Desktop browsing.
* As requested by fit333 (and who was as good as his word, and donated ), an option to lock in landscape mode.
* setting to enable hiding/showing of notification bar. Note that this needs the entire Browser process to be restarted to take effect (so use the top-left click to go home, click again to quit the browser, and then reload to see the effect).
What do I need to run it?
Well, a Cupcake or Donut based rooted Android phone, basically. Make sure you download the correct version. If you are installing on Hero, you might need to wipe all the application data otherwise you'll get force closes.
How do I install it?
The only "safe" way is to push it with ADB. Delete /system/app/Browser.apk and any Browser.odex. Then adb push my browser into /system/app/Browser.apk. Many people had success on Cupcake by just installing via file managers. I managed to upgrade - note, UPGRADE, not install from scratch - by downloading it on my phone from the download link. It'll tell you this is a system application, do you want to update it - say yes. This was on Dwang's Donut ROM. However, the only method I'll "support" is via ADB because it's all so variable. ADB should (in theory) work on any ROM.
I installed your browser and now I can't browse the interweb, my phone exploded, I lost my job and suffered an embarrassing rectal prolapse in a public place. I blame you!
Thank you, please call again. All purchases are final. I would suggest that one uses a program to back up your bookmarks at the very least before installing this.
This is the best thing since self removing trousers! What do I do now?
Send me money by clicking here.
Future improvements I'm hoping to do:
* A proper full screen option (i.e. where you'd also hide the title bar as well as the notification bar, and only show it when pages are loading)
* Hero-style lairy Mac coverflow-esque bookmarks (some way off in the future methinks!)
* tidy up what behind the scenes is, unfortunately, some really kludgey code!
Thanks go to:
* Cyan, obviously, without whom none of this would have been possible, and whose ROMs continue to break new levels of awesomeness
* makethetick, who pointed me in the right direction for the code in the first places
Raspberries go to certain individuals in this thread.
Older versions kept around just in case. THESE ARE ALL CUPCAKE BUILDS. IF YOU INSTALL ON DONUT YOU'LL GET CORRUPTED MENU ICONS.

Loccy's BetterBrowser - new stuff and bug fixes (v1.5: 7th Sep 11:30am/BST)
Changes for 1.5
* Bottom left/right corner click to cycle between tabs (so bottom left goes to previous tab, bottom right goes next)
* Slight change to top bar behaviour, because a couple of people didn't like it and were being put off upgrading. Top left corner to go back to the home page (and then again to quit the browser) is as it used to be. Pulling the address bar down is now top right corner rather than everywhere across the title bar - many people were complaining that they kept doing it accidentally so I've made it a little more "deliberate".
* Removed zoom in/out menu options. They were an early feature before I figured out double/triple tap, were buggy anyway (and non-existent in Cyan's implementation for Donut, even though the menu option was still there!) and I suspect no bugger used them any more.
* Glorious Donutty goodness! (i.e. you don't need to wait for Cyan to incorporate my changes, or suffer dodgy screwed up icons if you install the Cupcake version). I used Cyan's Donut branch as a base. He'd manually pasted in the code from my Cupcake based builds to create this in the first place, a real tedious and laborious process that I now didn't need to do, so many thanks for him for that.
Changes for 1.4.3
* Fix/change for maintain current zoom level across page loads. Now, it only maintains zoom across a domain (so if you're on site xyz.com, and zoom out to a comfortable level there, it'll maintain the sizing across pages on that site. When you go to another site abc.com, that one will start out at zoom level 1. This has the side effect of fixing the column-sizing issue that affected most sites but was most prevalent on mobile sites).
* Slight refinement to the top-corner and top-bar click algorithms. Should work a lot better now for those of you who have the notification bar visible when in the browser.
* Increased maximum number of tabs from 8 to 32. Not sure how this'll hold up, memory-wise - feedback please.
Changes for 1.4.2
* Maintain current zoom level across page loads (so it doesn't suddenly zoom back in whenever you go to another page)
* Fix for top bar clicks (i.e. click title bar to pull down address bar, click top left to go home) when notification bar not hidden.
Release notes/changes for 1.4/1.4.1
* fix to force close on mobile sites when double tap zoom cycle goes back
to the "all the way out" setting (and this time it's DEFINITELY fixed )
* you can now double-tap/triple-tap anywhere on a page to zoom - previously, you'd have had to avoid areas where there were links, otherwise the link would start to load before your zoom would happen.
* setting to change triple tap delay value in advanced settings (so the
lower the setting, the more responsive double-taps are, but the quicker
you have to get your triple-tap in!)
* setting to change double-tap behaviour, between the existing zoom cycle,
and also now just a simple zoom out only setting (so if you want to just
keep it simple, and have double-tap to zoom in, triple tap to zoom out,
the latter will be the setting for you). How many zooms this will result in per cycle will depend on the page you're viewing.
* change to double-tap zoom cycle behaviour - now zooms ALL the way out
to give a true page overview, and also introduces an intermediate step
between page overview and 1:1 zoom (this is a nice level for sites with
big fonts, eg. aintitcool.com)
* click title bar (or top of screen) to bring down the address/search bar
* click top left of screen to go to home page. Click it a second time when on the home page to exit the browser completely (or double-click from elsewhere).

Cool, double tap to zoom in and out would a nice feature to have.

Stupid noob question
I do need to uninstall the old browser apk first? Probably so.
mount and push APK to /system/app
do I need to chmod? and if so what is the number? 775?
Thanks,
Your Guinie Pig!
Chevy

Just flashed 4.0.1 yesterday and am running themeless. Rebooted just to verify and yes I have the same issues. FC on bookmarks and am missing the refresh and forward icons.
Cheers,
Etienne

cover flow
It would be great if u could add the cover flow feature that the hero browser has for bookmarks and Thanks a lot those buttons kept getting in my way to.

intallation
I'm sorry but how do u get it on the rom?

Will this work on JACxROM?

Edit: fixed version hopefully now on the first post.

Yes, I'd uninstall the old browser first.
Install would go something like this, from your command line on your PC:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
mv Browser.apk Browser.original
exit
adb push Browser-cyan-pn-mod2.apk /system/app/Browser.apk

Bloody hell. It's taken me a week to get this far

I tried this and it seems to be working fine so far... thanks I really found those buttons annoying too

I think the zoom buttons can be beneficial sometimes instead of multitouch zoom for situations when you are using the phone with one hand. That's when I have use for them. But I guess if the double tap feature from Hero were implemented, this would have the same effect. Good job on the idea tho and keep up the hard work!

Not sure. I believe JACxROM and Cyan's have the same multitouch stuff in their kernels, so I see no reason why it wouldn't, but I might be wrong.

The double tap from hero would be nice good work on this.
Anyway you could post detailed uninstall old and install new instructions? Maybe terminal and adb commands?

You are my new best friend !
Thank you so much. Works perfectly.

Very nice! Always wanted this after using hero's browser.
One question: would it be possible to make the browser full screen (like no status bar)?

Works Great!
This was a really cool idea! I also would like to be able to double tap as well.
One more would be a way to get the screen back to original size without having to go back or open a new page.
I installed completely through terminal.apk
Good Job!

no rush
Thanks for the intallation info. No rush take your time. I know u just posted this not too long ago. Think of it this way though if u could get that cover flow going for the bookmarks that would be a major breakthrough for u cause then the rest of the devs would have to come to u for help. I think Hycuro had it to but with a second home launcher from the hero built. Thanks again.

I mounted /system and rm -r to remove the original Browser.apk and com.android.browser in /data/data.
Then did the following..note that I renamed the apk to Browser.apk:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
cd sdcard
install Browser.apk /system/app/Browser.apk
reboot
Edit: Everything works fine.

Hi,
could you please create an apk file that also includes the Flashplugin? Is that possible yet?

Modified launcher - source and apk attached (Number of homescreens now customizable)

Modified Launcher:
Current features:
* Customizable number of home screen and default screen. (default 3 screens, can be set from 2 to 10 screens)
* Sensor-based rotation can now be enabled/disabled from the extended settings menu.
* Applications from the application drawer can be hidden by throwing them in the recycle bin.
The ones that are thrown away will not be deleted but in the background a database is kept in which the applications info is stored and i modified the application loading so that it checks against that database and the ones in it will not be shown. This way you can finally organize the menu...
* Ive added an extra menu option to manage the added features. ( Extended )
Updates:
21-07-2009:
Source added ( attached as zip for now )
Somehow the forums zip upload isnt working at the moment ( or it doesnt like the zip file ) , so ive uploaded it to rapid share.
22-07-2009:
Number of homescreens and the default screen can now be set manually in the Extended settings screen.
Added apk ( launcher.zip ) to the first post.
23-07-2009
Sensor-based rotation can now be enabled/disabled from the extended settings menu
Added apk and new dump of complete source.
Side note:
The source has been build/tested against 1.5r2.
Issues:
There is one little bug I know of:
The applications arent removed on first boot... if you reboot everything works fine... I will look into this issue.
Same goes for the settings... you will need to reboot before stuff will be saved correctly.
Downloads:
-- STILL WORK IN PROGRESS SO IF YOU WANT A FULLY STABLE LAUNCHER DONT USE THIS UNTIL ITS TESTED FULLY --
Latest dump of the source can be found at http://rapidshare.com/files/259200651/Launcher_source_090723.zip
Be aware that the code is only a test case. Ill start cleaning up / organize stuff as soon as all the features are done...
And the latest .apk is attached below ( zipped )
Would it be possible to have per home screen menuing, so a different menu can be used for each home screen?
Wow. That sounds awesome rogro! I can't wait to see it. I'll be one of the first guinea pigs
neato

Did I hear right? You will now be able to hide apps? Amazing just waht I have been waiting for! Maybe you could password protect the app that "Hides the apps! This is worth donating for!
Since your sharing the apk, you should share the code at github. This way there's no debate if it'll work on this build or that. sharing is what this community's all about.
Will do... as soon as i have everything tested and finished ill upload the source...
Wow ,great job. Been looking for something like this to run on a cupcake ROM. I'm curious though ,the app launcher is it the bigger ones (i.e. 5x4, 6x3) or the original ones.
what happens if you throw that extra menu option, that manages the hidden apps, into the recycle bin???
Universe exploads?
Sounds too good to be true!
I can't wait to try it!
(subscribed to thread)
IDEA!
PLEASE
add a function of picking up and dropping the icon allows a context menu to come up that includes app info page and market info page. (like dxtop)
This sounds awesome.. If you put up a Git repository I'll pull it for sure into my build.
wow can't wait for this sounds great!!
think you can have some sneak peak screenshots of this launcher in action =D
build up the HYPE lol.
this does sound awesome.
can't wait to see release and details!
cyan, i hope you put this on your rom!
i love all your roms!!
i think i'm excited.
yup. i am.
ummm
Any way you could use your superior knowledge to make one that has 3 screens and no auto rotate? I love the idea of being able to hide apps, but am not too fond of 5 screens and auto rotate. I've been replacing Launcher.apk in cyanogen's builds because of this. Does hiding apps make things run a little faster when returning to the home screen with the app drawer open?
Ill first finish this version tonight and then ill look into making the number and default of the home screens customizable, so that everyone can choose for themselves
dude you are to nice with trying to compromise with everyones needs. thats a good artist if i could say. i can be a test subject if you will and willing to try with ne rom or whatever. do it up!!
Added screenshots to first post showing the removal of applications
we've been hurting for home replacements, free ones anyway. Since you're at it, could you look if there's something that can be done to the app-drawer tab to have three clickable regions instead of one? I'm thinking something along the terms of the Rosie tab. You could add options so that the user could customize what each region does (ie, region 1 brings up the app drawer, region 2 brings up the dialer, and region 3 brings up the widget dialog, like rosie). I'd do it myself, I've already worked some pseudocode for it, but alas, my Java syntax is about 6 years too old and I haven't learned much of android's implementation yet.

[APP/MOD] ADW.Launcher.MB.Playground for CyanogenMod 7 [5/24/11 v0.1.1]

My changes have been merged into CM7!
I'm starting this thread to test out modifications
This is for CyanogenMod 7, I offer no help getting this to work on anything else.
This version is an update to the ADW.Launcher that already in installed on CM7 so you will keep all your existing settings.
You can also uninstall this version at any time and ADW.Launcher will revert back to the original ADW.Launcher.
As always with these kinds of things, I am not responsible if something goes wrong, so use at your own risk.
Source is now on github and can be viewed here!
My first focus is on application management such as groups/catalogs
0.1.1 Eye Candy Release
Added:
* Backup/Restore of desktop data now also saves categories
* Screen transitions just because I like them and it can get tiresome working of usability stuff.
0.1.0 (Merged into CM7)
Added:
* If no categories, not title shows in the drawer (CM7 requirement so users who don't use categories don't see a change)
* Option to turn off the title in the drawer even if you have categories.
0.0.9
Fixed:
* Better drawer switching on swipe
0.0.8
Added:
* UNCATEGORIZED group now hides when empty
* In preparation to submit to CM7, I have added an option to enable the UNGROUPED group. Disabling the option will revert to the old way of showing the ALL group and does not show the UNCATEGORIZED group.
Changed:
* Renamed UNGROUPED to UNCATEGORIZED
0.0.7
Added:
* Application Info and Market support for Live Folders* Restore icon menu option when changing an icon
Fixed:
* Swipe on empty UNGROUPED folder fixed
0.0.6 (w/Drawer to home screen drag FC fixed)
Changed:
* Editing a user folder now lets you set a custom icon. Not being able to set an icon on a custom folder makes them less attractive for use since I can't visually label it.
Fixed:
* Fixed a drawing issue when opening the vertical drawer that causes the icons to jump
0.0.5
Changed:
* Swipe to change groups in the drawer. Up/down swipes are used for in the Horizontal pagination drawer and left/right swipes are used in the Vertical plain drawer style.
* Search and Wallpaper have been pushed to the more button in the launcher's menu. There are other options are are used more than these.
* Added Manage Applications to the launcher's menu.
0.0.4
Changed:
* Added Edit button on popup menu for Folders so it's easier to rename them. (Eventually I want to add the ability to change the icon on folders just like yo can with apps)
Fixed:
* FC when picking up Shortcuts
0.0.3
Changed:
* Moved System Settings so it's visible in menu, while Lock Desktop has been relegated to More menu. I use Setting WAY more that lock/unlock desktop.
* The group name is now always displayed at the top of the drawer. Gone is the animation showing the name.
0.0.2
Changed:
* Add ADW Settings to menu as they get removed from System Settings
Fixed:
* Fixed so install survives reboot
0.0.1
Features:
* The application popup menu replaces "Uninstall" with "Settings". This takes you to the Application Info window instead. There is an uninstall button on this screen, but also has a lot of other useful information.
* Added "Market" to the application popup window. This takes you to the application in the Market App. Great for quickly seeing updates/comments.
* Added "Choose Group" to the application popup window. This allows you to take an application and pick what groups you want it in. As apposed to opening the group and finding the application to add. Very efficient for newly installed apps.
* The popup menu can now be used in the app drawer. This gives access to the new settings, market and choose group options.
* Replaced drawer's ALL with UNGROUPED. Gone is the ALL list of applications in the app drawer. It has been replaced by the UNGROUPED list. This list only shows the apps that have no group assigned. As you move apps to groups, this list shrinks and makes it easier to find newly installed apps.
* Opening/Changing groups in the app drawer does a quick animation to tell you the name of the group.
Known Issues:
* If there are no apps in the UNGROUPED, the group still shows.
Please post your comments!
If i get enough good feedback, I'll start down the road to getting these changes merged into CM7.
Good job man, really nice improvements.
Just one little suggestions, i wish i could see the group label (top or bottom) on the drawer, insted of it fadind on bottom, that way u allway know what group of apps you are on.
Other than that really digging it. One more thing, i feel noobish asking this but i cant find it, how do you get to adw settings??

Check out v0.0.2. I've made sure its in the ADW menu as it seems to vanish from the System Settings when you install this update.
Thanks for your feedback!
Got v 0.0.2, adw setting back to normal, works good. Keep tweaking this, good job, will definitely stay on it.

true story
I really like this! One suggestion (unless I just don't know how to do it) would be to allow the ability to swype between groups.
Nice work... Big fan of ADW and these mods.
Suggestion: I'm a proponent of the stupid search button --> useless! Besides its easy to map it to other soft key buttons if one needs it... I say replace it with the manage applications button similar to how it is in the stock launcher or put it under the more button.
I'm running EX unfortunately...
It's almost the perfect launcher except for the terrible groups structure. It's just wrong all the way.
I think custom menus, that you can navigate through swyping left to right, is the way to go...
I would also like a swipe-able app drawer to cycle through the groups.
Hey!
This looks pretty cool. I really like that you moved "lock desktop" as I never use it, but I accidentally hit it sometimes.
I actually had some issues with the locked desktop with ADW recently, and I was wondering if this would be a good place to mention my problem.
As it is, if the desktop is locked and you don't realize it (since I had hit it accidentally), its very confusing when you try to adjust something! The screen vibrates to acknowledge a long press, but nothing else happens. It would be great if you had a short TOAST popup ( http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/Toast.html ) that said "Desktop Locked" when the user tries to move something and the desktop is locked.
Its a simple feature but it really had me confused for a while! Since I was on a nightly build I just assumed something was broken, which led me astray from the real solution!
I think a little toast popup for that would rock!

Is it normal to lost my ADW settings selection for the settings menu? Other than that, I am digging this!

Excellent idea. Will be awesome with some polishing
Issues on my Verizon Galaxy S3.
1) Sleep timer doesn't seem to wait as many seconds as you enter
2) When using with an app that hides notification bar its a pain to switch focus and stop the script without 20 other apps being opened. Maybe use a floating icon interface like gameguardian or gamecih use? or allow a hot-key to be set for start-stop? Seems like it always ends up crashing while I'm trying to close apps that it opened. If I switch focus to the botmaker then depending on the script you can really mess things up... first effort I hadn't exported, saved, or even written down anywhere and was about 30 lines long... even though i immediately hit pause when i got to botmaker the auto-taps kept going and deleted about 7 lines of my script before it crashed and shutdown
3) A working directory to save and load scripts from would be great to have. The current import/export seems a little awkward
Will download when I get 4.1

Depending on your device and ROM you can do this already. On my galaxy s3 running CleanROM I have an option under Settings->Developer options->Show pointer location. This puts an overlay at the top of screen so you can see the X,Y of each touch.
Great App! Would like to the an option to repeat endless. Atm I have the same sequence over and over.

It repeats endlessly for me.
Just 4.1+ ?
I see definitely great potentials in this app. I will test it ASAP
Great Idea, can you please just add an a record option, It's really hard to know the coordinations i want.
Again, Wonderful Idea
Brilliant idea.
It would be good if you could record gestures for talkback and assign them to widgets / navbar shortcuts.
For example, I`d like to add a widget / icon in the navbar or home screen that would emulate swipe down - then - swipe right as this pauses talkback. My wife has brain damage and is blind and the gestures on Talkback are a right pain in the arse!
I have a Nexus 4 running PA with Franco kernel and I put the said action in, hit play and it kept going over and over. I was unable to pause or stop it. I had to reboot the handset.
That said, this is a marvellous idea. Being able to record complicated multi-point swipes and assign them to a softkey/widget would be fantastic. There could be a security risk (potentially) if the app records silently and stores touches on the pattern unlock.
Good work, OP, good work.
Works great! The was able to take the X Y from my CM10.1 D2VZW and have it drop an item from Ingress! Would like to be able to copy/paste action lines or repeat action etc for repetitive tasks.
Please keep up the good work! I'm very excited about this project.
Very nice app, congratulations :good:
I've recently been doing research on how to inject keyEvents to other applications for the Glass on Android port, and the only way I could find was to create an InputMethod.
Could you please give me some insight as to how you achieved this? Did you have to use the NDK or made use of some hidden API?
been waiting for something like this for so long! thanks so much dev! :good::good::good:
Have been looking for this for so long. Had looked at every inch of Google and couldn't find and there I just bumped into it today. Thanks Dev.

Yes this. I saw this and came here to give the same idea. Making a tasker plug-in with this would be too cool.
Well, actually it is possible but a plugin would be much more comfortable.

Any way to get "swype down" to close apps in android? - + one more Q

Coming from Nokia's N9 myself I realy miss some of the feature of the Meego OS, and was wondering if these are available on android:
Is it possible to get a function to "swype" downwards to close an app ?.
Also is it possible to get a quick "mini menu" where the top status bar is - where one could togle things like blutooth, wifi, etc.
Also how does one "clear" the status messages without having to click everyone of them ?.
Is there also a way to close all apps (I know the Galaxy Tab have this feature - but I guess that is something built into some samsung stuff) ?

My friend looking at your post, it seems like you are not familiar with the term called "rooting" and "custom roms".
Three of the features out of four you've asked are there in custom roms.
The swype down feature.. Looks interesting BUT i am afraid so far we haven't seen it in android yet.

Yea - know there is way to root it - but haven't realy looked into it as this is a company phone, so would like to keep it "clean" - was hoping maybe some launcher/apps would add this functionality.
However I found the nexus actually have a quick mini menu at least Not sure it provide everything I wanted but it's a start
thnx for the reply
Root + Xposed + Gravity will do all except swipe down.

That's the closest thing I know of for swipe down to close apps. It can close apps by swiping from any edge you want, but requires the Xposed framework
Any gesture navigation app will give you the "swype downwards to close an app" ***current app
Just set the gesture
There are a couple of problems with the things you wish to do as far as I can see it:
1) swiping downwards to close an app will cause you some issues in the long run, specifically given that this is how you open the notification panel. From the videos of the N9 that I have seen, the close-app gesture is started from the edge of the screen, not somewhere in the middle? This is exactly how you open the notification panel...
2) It's not as quick as it could be (yet) but there is a mini-menu for toggles in the notification pull-down if you pull down with two fingers, or pull down with one then tap the icon in the top right
3) There should be a little icon looking like three staggered rectangles in the notification pull-down when you have multiple status messages. Tapping this should clear all status messages.
4) Closing all apps on Android is (generally) a bad thing to do. With Meego (and Maemo before it), all open applications are true multi-tasking so will be holding active RAM in use in the background so closing all running apps has a practical use (I used to use an N900). With Android, however, we actually only have a partial hybrid multi-tasking, where only apps with an API call to explicitly stay active will remain fully active in the background (eg. music playback). Everything else is put into a partial suspend state. If you keep fully closing everything, then Android will have to re-open it from ROM rather than RAM which will have a detrimental effect on your battery life. This is heavily paraphrased from an Android development engineer. As for Samsung, this is basically pandering to customer ignorance who still think that anything in the "recents" menu is draining their battery because that's how it works with Windows. To put it very bluntly, Android is better at memory management than you are
Unlike with Meego/Maemo, the entries in the Recents menu are not actually all open and active. As the name suggests, this is only a "history" list of apps you have had open since boot. The lower down this list, the more likely it may still be active, but not guaranteed.
Sorry if any of the above is borderline patronising, but I feel that this sort of Android RAM misinformation needs to be explained whenever I see it! :silly:

Swipe down to close app is there in Xposed using swipe back module.

Thanks for the clarification appreciated
Yea the N9's screen is part of the swype system (the screen sides are curved), as it differs from swyping from the edge of the screen or within - it's the same from the sides, one can either swype from edge of the screen - flipping thru the apps that is open - or one can swype from just inside the edge to scroll thru f.ex images in an image viewer - the N9 also have a "notification" bar - or atleast a "top" bar, but that's activated only by a touch of the top line (where it shows status) - instead of dragging it down.

Clearly based on other responses there is an Xposed module that allows you to close and app with a downwards swipe, so my response may not therefore be the whole truth
With some sort of selectable "active area" of the Xposed swipe you might be able to get the best of both worlds; i.e. swipe from top left downwards to close current program, or top middle and top right to open notifications? (or any combination thereof of course!)

[APP][4.1+] SwiftOpen - Fast Launcher BETA [v0.9.3]

INTRODUCING SwiftOpen
To speed lovers: this is the app you thought didn't exist but always wanted.
SwiftOpen is a launcher (not a home launcher) that allows you to launch apps, shortcuts, contacts, calls... very, very fast.
Not only is it fast at launching whatever you want, but its interface also allows you to choose it quickly, without even looking at the phone. And this applies to as many shortcuts as you wish.
It is also lightweight and battery friendly!
Awesome video by Android Hackz:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2edSlOMECU
Video "Life is Short":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj2gGZFzD5I
Appearing on XDA-TV:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/3-unique-launchers-xdatv/
TRANSLATIONS:
I can provide native translations for Spanish and Catalan. If anyone wanted to contribute translating the app to any other language it would be very helpful. If so, please pm me or send me an email. Thanks!
Features:
Very fast launching
App launching
System toggles such as torch, wifi, autorotate...
Did I say fast?
Shortcut launching
Recent apps and calls
Guided setup
Folders that allow even more shortcuts
Multiple detectors
Multiple actions per detector
Custom icons for folders
Icon pack support
Alt-tab to switch to the previous app
Tablet (and phablet) mode
Intuitive settings
Battery friendly
Plenty of customization
I have already incorporated many features suggested by xda members. Any suggestion is welcome, and if I have time and I find it appropriate, I'll add it!
LAUNCHING IN PREVIOUS STATE:
Since v0.8.3 SwiftOpen launches apps in their previous state instead of restarting. Some apps behave different than expected, and need to be treated in a different manner so that they are resumed instead of restarted (like Whatsapp and gReader). I have a white list of these apps, so if you find an app that is restarted tell me and I'll try to verify that they'll be resumed if treated differently, to add them to the whitelist.
SOME PHONES:
The app does not work on some Huawei phones because of the rom -apps with floating windows don't work there. At least with those that I've tested. If someone has a Huawei phone with stock rom and it works, please tell me.
It does not work with some Xiaomi Redmi either. If someone has a Xiaomi phone and finds that the app works with the stock rom, please also tell me.
It is not because of the code in the app, but the rom those phones have...
VERSIONS:
v0.4 and v0.5 have not been optimized for Lollipop.
From v0.5.1 and up it is optimized for Lollipop.
In v0.6 the signature and the package name have changed (among other stuff) which means you'll have to configure it again, as it won't install on the previous version but in parallel. I'm sorry about this. The apk is also larger, because of the icons and all the changes in the project structure; it'll improve in next versions, I hope.
0.6.2 uses more ram than it should, and there are a few other issues.
ANDROID ISSUES:
If you go to the home launcher and then launch an app, it won't be launched until about 5 seconds after going home. It's how Google wants it to be, and I'll try a workaround in the future but I'm not sure if it'll work. Nevertheless, the point of this app is not needing to go to the home launcher
BETA:
This app is currently in beta. All your feedback will be more than welcome.
And you can also suggest new features...
If the app crashes it asks you to send me an email, with the Logs. You can see what is being send, so don't worry about your privacy, it is safe!
OPEN SOURCE:
Now I have to fix some bugs, add a bit of functionality, and clean up the code. Whenever this is done (in a few weeks, I hope) the app will be open source.
MATERIAL DESIGN:
I am also working on bringing material design to the app.
Nevertheless the priority is bug-fixing and functionality.

Improve aesthetics and animations
Add missing translations

Great job
I'll keep an eye to see how it evolves. By now it looks promising.
It would be great to include the ability to add widgets as well.
Yes, it's planned. I will add the features I have planned so that you know them. But that's after bug fixing, when the app is open source. So it'll take a while yet. At least a month.
Awesome! (some feedback)
I've been looking for something like this for so long. I simply love shortcuts. I've been trying it for a day now and here is my feedback (and some suggestions):
- Settings don't apply inmediately. You have to turn off and close the app and then restart it for them to work. (It would be awesome to see real-time changes (i don't know how difficult that is), for example, for the vertical position of the border detection).
- The alt+tab function is simply genius, i use it more times than i expected. Keep that up.
- Rows and columns could be editable for each table. For example, i got a "Contacts table" (where a folder in my main page redirects to) where i'd like 6 contacts but i want 4x3 icons in my "Main table". So that would be a cool feature too.
- The permanent icon: I don't know it's purpose. If it's only to close the app, maybe an in-app long press button or something will do better and be less invasive for the drawer?
That's all for now, i will edit, if you want, with more feedback on the next days. :good:

:good:

Thank you very much for your feedback. About settings, I know that and its in the bug list to be fixed.
Rows and columns editable for each table is also into consideration. Nevertheless I don't think it is intuitive because the cells would not be in the same position.
And if the permanent icon means the notification, it is because to ensure that the app is not killed by the system, it is required to have a permanent notification.
If you give me more feedback it will be highly appreciated
Here's some more
Here are two more things i noticed:
- The border detector sometimes gets graphically buggy and it shows a big rectangle where the thin line should be. I assume it's the detector losing its transparency. I have a Nexus 4 running cm11 M10 (maybe it's only my problem)
- And second, sometimes when you accidentally fast click the border, it opens youtube (in my case the top central shortcut) instead of the one that belongs to the very edge of my screen (which i have empty to prevent this cases in particular, though it seems not to work)
I leave a screenshot with my config also.
About the big rectangle in my phone it happens very very rarely. But I'll fix it as soon as I discover what causes it.
And about launching YouTube, I'll look into it. Nevertheless it shouldn't be necessary to leave that cell empty if you use the "distance to drag necessary..." preference. I know the name is not intuitive but it prevents the detector from opening the launcher when the drag is very short (taps).
Thanks!

Nice work
Awesome app, I'd love to see it fully perfected!
Here's my feedback:
1. When the launcher is activated when in SwiftOpen Settings, the activity stack is all messed up, (especially if you go into creating a new table and opening the launcher while configuring it). While pressing back, the same activities come repeatedly and I have to press back a lot of times to exit the settings. Not a big issue, but a rough edge to be polished. I think it can be solved by providing a separate task stack for the launcher activity alone, by specifying a
Code:
android:taskAffinity
for the launcher activity in the manifest file.
2. Android limitation of launching an activity from a service only after at least 5 sec, is unfortunate. I was riddled with the same problem, however to overcome that, I replaced the activity and made the entire thing "draw over other apps". I am not sure whether it'll work properly in this case, but worth a try anyway.
I'll come back soon for the updates.
Edit: I guess point 2 is in place, since I don't see the delay anymore.
I noticed the stack issue and forgot to write it down, so haven't tried to fix it. I'll try as soon as possible. Thanks for the feedback!

The "Distance of drag necessary..." works just perfectly fine!
I also noticed the stacking-back problem but i thought it was only me...
Keep up the awesome job!
Edit: Trying out the new v0.3 and noticed one thing, it's hard to explain so i'll try my best.
When you swipe away the apps from the "recent menu" (i dont know how to call it, it's the bottom right soft button on a Nexus4) and you leave it completely empty, using the Alt+tab function closes the app everytime.
It may be silly but that's a bug i think (although not very critical )

Thanks! I hadn't noticed that. I'll try to fix it as soon as possible! It's not a typical scenario, though
Liking it very much so far. Looking forward to new updates!

Thanks for telling me about the name. When I looked for it it didn't appear (or I didn't see it). Nevertheless I'll put Swift open - Launcher or something like this, in the play store.
About drag and drop, it's in the long lost of to-dos but not a priority. First I have to fix some bugs. Thanks!

Folder suggestion
Great App! Please consider allowing custom icon for each folder.
