Basic Information and Terms? - General Questions and Answers

Hi I'm really new at these things like meddling with phones and and hacking them. I just want to know the basic terms and information used such as "flashing". I have an Xperia X1 and I want to know how to maximize its limit and tweak it.

Welcome to forums
Have a deep read here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kovsky
The you´ll be ready to enter to Kovsky section and start customizing
Enjoy!

You´ll have a clearer view there.
Enjoy!

have a look around in the xperia question. all information regarding to flashing etc, can be found there. but before ask questions, try to use the search function first, ass it would most probably get you on your way faster than ask a question and have to wait for an answer. good luck

hey thx. i found out that the x1i is able to go 3g in certain areas in US. but can anyone tel me wat the at&t 3g frequency or the number for garden grove, CA 92840? 850/900/1900?

Rom is read only memory. It contains the sytem image. You can replace the system image on your phone through a process called flashing.

and i heard and read people say both things like x1i is 900/1900/2100 and the x1a is 850/1900/2100. and other people say that x1i and x1a are quad bands and have all 850/900/1900/2100. is this correct? because im in the united states in south california and i want to use 3g network

Upgrade from OS5 to OS6

Don't know which section to post this really, but here goes...
I got a mini XDA on o2 (UK)
I want to upgrade the operating system from 5 to 6, but all o2 shops don't wanna know.
14 months old so out of warranty.
Can someone help, or explain in plain English how to go about this?
Be careful, I have only just worked out how to operate my pop-up toaster......
Rob
Basically you need to read the topics on this forum and fully understand them before you even think of doing something to your xda..
First you need to figure out whether you have a G3 or G4 model, you can find out here
If you have a G4 then you're not in deep ****, but it might be a little difficult..
After that, here's a good tutorial on flashing: clickie
If you don't have a clue about anything in these topics, it'd be best to find someone who can, otherwise you'll probably end up with a bricked phone.
Good luck!
Read, read, read. You should know what you do before doing anything (or you may change your Wizard into an expensive paperweight).
Though when you learn it, it is quite easy. I have CID locked G4 and I changed ROM many times using shelltools (less elegant than SoftSPL/HardSPL solutions, but more safer).

LOL !
C'mon , guys don't just scare him like this
We all have come here as noobies, but have gone through and learned alot.
Hey ! It's not a big deal,if 100/1000 have done it,so can you, just read all the stickies on unlocking and upgrading carefully a couple of times, let it all sink in and when comfortable ,GO for it.
Once again I advise you,Just READ the Stickies only, don't read the whole forum,it'll make you confused,ok
Good luck
Anyone know of where I can get this done in the UK?
Rob

There are no forums here for any i-mate phone that was not manufactured by HTC - there is some discussion in the general forum area about the 8502 and 9502, but since the 8150 is even more rare, it may be hard to find much in the way of custom upgrades for it. I would do a Google search for i-mate forums. I had an 8502 for a short time but sold it because of microSDcard limit of 2GB, and not finding much in the way of customizing (and the screen is kind of dim and lifeless in color!).
As far as software, there is tons of stuff - most anything for Windows Mobile 5 or 6 will work unless it was created specifically for a certain brand and model, and even much of that may work - like even some of the HTC apps found here. Lots of other .cab's for great software are scattered throughout the forums here.
Google "Windows Mobile free software" and you'll find many great sites (such as FreewarePocketPC) with many excellent free or shareware apps.

Why does the reception fall once 3G is activated on this device

So far every rom I have tried end up having very bad reception with 3G activated. The reception goes back to 100% with it disabled (EDGE)
Any idea why is this happening? Any fix out there?
what about your radio???
signal strength is more likely a radio issue than a ROM issue...
what radio are you using?
are you sure your radio is compatible with your ROM?
and finally....some radios Work better in certain countries...
this is a link to the "ultimate radio thread...."
read about different radios there and see what radio fits your rom...
you might also see members from your part of the world describe what radio gave the best 3G signal...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393182
the 3G signal is actually a weaker signal in regards to signal strength. That's why you are able to pick up a better GSM signal then you are a 3G signal.
This has always been the case and it's the same for HSDPA as well.
Keep trying different radio's until you find one that fits your needs.

It depends on the band your provider is using and where you are. For example. In Las Vegas, AT&T is using 850Mhz for Edge and 1900Mhz for HSDPA. 850Mhz penetrates walls/cars/etc. much better than the 1900Mhz spectrum so Edge 'usually' provides a better signal. Which, by the way, means the radio works less hard and does not drain the battery as quickly. That is not the only reason Edge gets better battery performance mind you but - at least in this case - it is a factor.
In some parts of the country AT&T using 850 for HSDPA and 1900 for Edge so the tables could actually be turned.
As with many isssues - there are not absolutes - just a bunch of variables that need to be taken into account.
i a not trying to be a **** but what does this have to do with Windows mobile 6? this is a radio problem not a rom development issue, and to make matters worse a mod commented on this topic with out moving it...
I can only say what my own experience has been. In South Africa we have about 98% GPRS Coverage and about 94% Edge coverage. 3G(and HSDPA) however covers only about 40%. The short version is that there are less towers available that actually give 3G/HSDPA and that your device will switch to one (even if the signal stregth is lower) if it is available. The problem is that you have good GPRS coverage (Say 10 towers to a specific areas) and 3G/HSDPA have dismal coverage (Say about 3 towers to the same said area.
On the bright side, our service providers charge for Data only (Fast or slow it is the same price).
If I am not utilising the internet sharing feature I switch 3G/HSDPA off and have crystal clear reception ALL the time!

Oh esteemed one...please grace us with your knowledge and expertise on the proper etiquette on how to handle every single situation on XDA-Developers.
I should have closed the thread but since this wasn't a question that is asked every day I kept it open for the time being. Sorry my vigilance was not to par.

Seems like you're spending a lot of time complaining about the way things are run around here. I know everyone appreciates the useful contributions that you make. We are aware that you don't like a lot of things here, no need to rehash what you've already stated multiple times. Moderating is a time consuming and mostly thankless job, so maybe you should ease up a bit buddy.
seriously? whats the point of different sections of a forum then? why have Moderators? Sorry i am the only one speaking what i feel around here but it seems this forum has been a flame zone and a place for rudendent questions. Moderation is not that hard "click move post" done. there are some great minds on Xda and i have seen many of them walk away because of crap like this over and over again. How many radio threads are there?
if you would like to continue this lets do it over PM as not to waste space
Ok, enough already. This is a radio question. There is no radio forum so there is no other place but software and general. Thus it belongs with the other threads pertaining to radio's which happens to be in the Rom development section.
@ austin
I've noticed that lately you have been extremely upset with XDA. You have been a great developer around here and you will be missed, of this I am sure. With that said, you are more than welcome to enjoy YOUR forum.
All of my custom built rom's are released there, I made this forum so us real dev's can meet and share idea's and App's!! Trust me its NOT like XDA!

If it's that bad, why do you continue coming back and starting things?
With all that said, "why can't we all just get along?"
thanks guys I'll give diff radios a shot. I usually go by what the Chef reccomends but just noticed that even after flashing Roms and radio reccomendations from diff chefs my 3G has always been bad. Thought I might have missed a fix out there like the keyboard fix for non-At&t roms.
yes lets all get along!
not like Xda is in reference to the ability to flame, swear, and do what ever else you like except ask dumb n00b questions

and I read this,.
Seems that now you are blaming to XDA,. if its not like XDA, and your signature reader have to trust you about your private link, then why keep coming here?
Dont you have a better place there? that have their own Development tools? Apps? and ROMs?
Then if you have a better place there, then you keep coming here, for what? just to post unuseful post and so the reader could read your signature too??
haha,. its a bit funny right here,.
XDA-Developer have their believe and their developers, and so did yours,.
and if you keep blaming like that, i would say that,
"If your forum was that good, and famous with their own development tools, why should you promote it until you write "PM - For access to my private forum!!" more than once? is it quiet there? why should we go to PM? whats you got to hide?"
So many Site with their development tools, and developers, but those site just didnt need to promote like that, and you know, almost them all could be crowded, just without promoting like yours"
I grow up from XDA developer, if you keep blaming it (even you said that you dont blaming XDA, but your words, show me that) then i'll guarantee, that your forum was ugly, thats why you keep blaming XDA, because you are jealous of it,.
Sorry for bad english

@ austinsnyc
Just going to stick this in before tread is closed, I visited youre dev. forum. Its full of warez and bad luang (not like me whit bad spelling typos but rude meaningless talk). I really didnt see how youre board will be bether than xda just by letting users beeing able to post warez and talk unmoderated ****? You been a good contributor but isnt you part of what could pull xda down? Beeing all negative and rude to everyone that looks up to you, we all are happy for you having youre own board. But bothom line if you going to be a ****head and just here to recruit why dont you stick to it? Really, this stuff has to stopp.
(now moderate me, but someone had to say it)
Now this is good reading!! lets take this into a thread of its own in the proper place
My sig is the way it is at Mods request thats why you must PM for a link
Also why not advertise, why not let people know that i am starting a forum that allows freedom of speech that includes "swearing/flaming/what not"? I like a nice quite forum thats the whole point, why would i want a bunch of threads made up of questions that are commen knowledge to someone with any type of Windows Mobile would know. Look this isnt about my forum lol, this about a post that had nothing to do with ROM development in the rom development section about something that has been talked about over and over and over again. I am not knocking Xda in anyway shape or form no matter how you may "read it" (Garmin) maybe your understanding of the english language is off? and you missed the point i was making!
Thread closed....nothing else important to add.

*(Cricket-Vogue, Rom Flashing Help. Thank You!)*

I have learned and gained so much from all the members of the Xda community. So thank you. One thing I haven't learned much about is flashing roms. I have searched the forms many times but just cannot find what I am looking for, for my cricket phone. So if you know anything about cricket roms, you are the person I am looking for.
My question is, where do I start? I have a HTC vogue cell and I am on the cricket network. I am looking for a rom that is fast, clean(no extra crap), and is built to work with(or has included) M2D(My current phone version does not work with it(Adding programs/contacts, in their respective tabs...?)), and finally works with the cricket network(aka working mms, gps, calling, internet, ect.)
Also I do not know much about installing roms. So instructions geared for a monkey would help much. Aka, I don't know anything about the process: flashing, radio versions, or what I should do first, second, last.
Thank you for putting up with my incompetence. No, seriously, thank you.
To be honest, the best thing you can do is go to the vogue section and check the new ROM threads. most rom cooks write all details about the roms there.. and all sections have threads explaining how to flash roms.
if you still have questions after you've learned a bit from reading, we'll try and answer everything you throw in our way
for instance...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425267
Thank you Nir36. But alas the rom that you suggested(with the link), no where mentions on it's page, the Cricket network..?
Lets take these other popular roms, both of which I am very interested in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=413376 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432487
Neither of them mention the cricket network or have very clear instructions on how to install. Any suggestions, ideas? Thank you.
the cook doesn't need to clearly state every network his rom would work with.
if a rom fits a device, it would (most probably) read any network. unless i'm missing something here and this cricket network is different than all others.
So if the Cook mentions every network, but cricket, your saying it will still be completely compatible?
The Vogue Flashing FAQ for WM6.5 is very, VERY helpful, and can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508544
I'm looking in to getting a vogue when my tax return comes in, and getting it on Cricket myself.
Hope this helps, and I'll let you know how mine goes when I get it.

HELP: Need info on rooting and installing a rom!

Hello all
This is my first post, great forum!
I got my HTC magic yesterday, and I want to root it, to install a ROM.
Here is what I mainly need in a ROM:
-multi-touch
-apps2sd (from the name of it, it installs apps to SD instead of internal memory, correct?)
-I listen to music a lot, so I need a good player in the home screen
-Wi-Fi, sending and receiving files by bluetooth
I figured out the following two were good, but I still hasn't decided which one to go with
this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4438580#post4438580
or:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556933
Any recommendations are welcome.
Now, i wandered around the forum here, and discovered that there lots of version of the magic, sapphire 32A and 32B, mytouch 3G, and Magic.
My version is the 288MB RAM and the TIM version, what's the name for it?
Knowing my version would help me in following guides.
Now, i have no idea what is the best guide to follow. I have no idea what are the SPLs! Would anyone care to tell me what are they exactly? Is it easy to revert back to the original HTC ROM?
And will I be able to update to Donut and future updates when it's released?
Is the Sense UI coming to the magic in October as rumored?
I thought I ask all my questions before I go around and brick the phone, I'm sorry if i asked questions that were answered before, i browsed through the first bunch of pages and couldn't find any help.
Thank you
one. Go to theunlockr.com and they'll walk you through the basics.
Two. if you have a my touch from t-mobile you most likely have a 32b.
Three. Google is your friend
Four. any other questions you may have are answerable with a tiny bit of research and reading the release notes
Ps I'm on att and had to get my phone from Rogers in canda. I did my research, didn't ask dumb questions and I'm lazy as hell. If I didn't brick my phone you should be fine, just don't try any of the fancy stuff like swaping kernels and radios etc.
Pps the only reason I registered was to respond to your lazy question.

On one other thing this really belongs in general or elsewhere not development.

I did not post all those questions because I'm lazy, or because I cant do the research.
I learned a lot from research alone in all fields.
I created this topic, because there were so much info everywhere. An old way, a new way, a doesnt-work-anymore way.
The requirements of the ROMs include a special version of SPL, so I wanted to know what it is exactly.
Thanks for theunlockr.com after all

YOU HAVEN'T Figured out anything if you posting here roms that are not for Sapphire/Magic they are for Dream/G1!! Ok sorry they maybe used in Magic Sapphire but not yours anyway you've got 288mb version thats 32A mother board this roms are for 32B...
If you had searched then you would have come up with these links yourself. This is one of the reasons why there are sooo many threads, people just post a new one to answer a simple question. Also, im pretty sure the Wiki is a stickied thread. Almost ALL of your questions would be answered there...
