sync w/ new laptop,,, contacts gone! - General Topics

Hello all,
My hard drive crashed on my old laptop. I bought a new one but haven't installed MS Office. I set up the sync connection to tether and now most of my contacts and calendar are gone.
What could have happened?
Any way to retrieve them?

I have been reading around on the net for a few hours and this looks to be a very common problem after switching computers and setting up a new partnership. It also looks like if you dont use an exchange server and do not have outlook installed on the desktop to catche deleted items then you are out of luck.
I cant believe WMDC is suppose to act this way! It says you have to delete a partnership and since your other PC is gone you delete the partnership. You expect that the device will populate outlook on the desktop or if outlook is not on the desktop then nothing will be touched.
But NO,,, microsoft is set up to delete all your precious data from your phone without warning!!!
THANKS microsoft!!!

Activesync 4.1 errors

Hi,
I just updated to ROM1.60c and ActiveSync 4.1 build 4807. When I try to sync, Activesync keeps giving me the error code 85010014.
The funny thing is, there's no problem syncing Notes from Outlook. But the other Outlook items such as Contacts, Calendar and Tasks are unable to sync.
What's happening? Does anyone else have the same problem? Why Notes is ok, but not the rest?
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Had the same problem after upgrading to WM5. If you use offline folders, make sure Outlook is connected to your Exchange Server, they try to sync your PDA. It takes a little while to sync Contacts and Calendar the first time, but afterwards you can "Work Offline" and sync everything successfully.
If it doesn't work, I would start with a new partnership.... delete previous computer partnerships from AS on your PDA and also delete PDA Partnership in AS on your PC.
There's also a few other posts here that refer to performing a "Repair" of the Outlook 2003 installation and another that says to uninstall and re-install Office 2003 all together. I tried the "Repair" (in Help Menu of Outlook) and it didn't work... I wasn't about to re-install my Office.... Luckily I found my solution through further digging on the Internet.
Good luck! Let us know the results.

Hi kcchen,
It works! What happened was that I had installed AS 4.1 at home over the weekend. On Monday I came to office, sync and suddenly it works! Never knew that it was becoz of Exchange...
Thanks for the great help. Next, to solve the problem with insufficient ROM...too much for programs, not enough for storage.
Thanks again buddy
Glad it worked for you! I was pretty frustrated with the error also...
where do you get ActiveSync 4.1
mine is ActiveSync 4.00.4343
can you give me the link for ActiveSync 4.1
thx
search goes a long way

I solved my ActiveSync problem with Error 85010014.
I also run Eudora and Incredimail Plugin for Outlook on both PCs, Work and Home. Both are on XP Pro SP2 and when I installed ActiveSync 4.1 on my work PC without issue, I decided to attack my Home PC Outlook installation to see if I could resolve the issue.
So, At home:
Putting Outlook in Offline mode did not solve the problem.
I uninstalled ActiveSync 4.0 and installed ActiveSync 4.1 - No difference.
I backed up Outlook via 3rd party program to grab account settings as well as my 2GB pst file then ran Help->Detect and Repair... - reboot, no difference.
I then ran Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs -> Office 2003 and chose to modify my installation by adding or removing components. I unchecked Outlook and updated it to remove Outlook from my Office 2003 suite. Then returned to this option and re-checked Outlook to add it back to my Office 2003 Suite, CD-Rom in hand but updating, it did not ask for the Office 2003 Install CD-Rom... - Rebooted and connected - Bingo NO 85010014 error!

Active sync synchronization feature...

Hi all
I`m pretty sure many ppl ran into this problem before me, so I hope someone will be kind and shed some light for me on this one
It seems to me that for some reason I cannot keep my contacts and other stuff on my Universal after deleting a AS relationship with my PC.
This is what I did:
Initially I sync my desktop PC to my Universal via active sync 4.5. (the synchronization includes: contacts, calendars, appointments, notes from outlook 2003)
So far so good the relationship created between the PC and the Uni fine and Now I have my contacts etc on my phone.
Now I decide I don`t wish to necessary break the relationship between the PC and the Uni, but I do not want to sync my contacts anymore.
On the AS i hit tools>options and try to remove the check from say the contacts. at that point AS welcomes me with this: "To proceed, AS must remove all Contacts on your PocketPC. Do you want to continue?" niiice.... so at this point if you say no nothing happens if you say yes guess what... all your synced contacts are gone... Now I want to keeeeeeeeeeep them.
If i try to delete the relationship from the AS, then next time I connect the Uni AS REMOVES everything that was used to set to sync without asking...[contacts,notes,calendar,tasks] I have to add that when you are deleting a relationship it does tell you that it will remove all this from the uni next time you connect it....
I tried this from my uni > active sync settings "delete" the PC from the list (aka remove the relationship) and it immediately removed all contacts etc..... even if i just try to stop the contacts from being syced with the PC it warns me that if I do this it`ll remove all contact from the uni..... ???
???
at this point I`m just sad about this because it`s not a bug certainly. Its just bad design IMO.
here are a few details about this show:
PC: MS Windows XP PRO SP2 with all updates as of now.
PPC: T-mobile MDA PRO running ROM:2.02.00 WWE -- thanks Jay...
AS: Active Sync 4.5.0 (build 5096)
Outlook: MS Outlook 2003 Standard with all the updates as of now.
Is that really possible that they actually thought this way of synchronization was a good idea???
I like to figure out a way that would allow me to keep all the data on the phone even after I deleted the AS synchronization relationship.
...going once....
Maybe not that many people got stuck with this then....
I`ll try a few things in the meantime....
WIZARD82. I have the same issue. Did you ever find a solution?
Wait a minute.. are you trying to let the PC be connected with ur Uni via AS but not sync anything? I tried doing that before... I think the trick is with Outlook since AS does not provide any other option. You have to like break the connection between AS and Outlook or something.. I'll play around it when I get home.
Edit:
Hey I got it... I tried it here at the office. Just delete the current relationship and create a new one without checking anything in the list of items to be sync'ed. You still get to keep all the data on both PC and PPC!
1. Make sure the PPC is unplugged.
2. On AS, go to File -> Delete Mobile Device and just say Yes to the question.. you won't lose anything (as far as I know since I still have all my contacts)
3. Plug in ur PPC.
4. Create a new relationship without checking any options on the list of items.
That's it! Hope this helps.

activesync support code : 1

My phone = HTC wizard (WM5)
I sync with my university's Exchange 2003 server.
OK, the other day i took three pics (100-150KB each) with my phone camera. I tried to email them to one of my hotmail accounts. I did this by clicking on the pics (in the Pictures & Video folders) and selecting "Send". Then It asked me to select an account and i choose "outlook" which i assume is the email i sync with exchange because the only other option was MMS.
Then i clicked on send/recieve and it synchronised with exchange etc, but then it said Attention Required and the emails had not been sent. I tried this many times but could not get the emails to be sent. When i connected my phone to the computer and tried it thru my computers activesync, it still didnt send the emails, giving me support code 1 error.
That support code isnt even listed with the others here.
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php
i even tried changing my activesync settings to download full emails and full attachments (i.e. not only if attachment smaller than <insert number>KB.
in the end i gave up and deleted the emails. now when it connects with activesync i get no problems and no support code 1.
I am just wondering why it couldn't send a few simple emails with pics attached.
ALSO, since im making a thread anyway, my outlook.ost file is 0KB. Is that normal?
Similar problem with HTC Touch Diamond
Hello friends,
I am having similar problem with my Touch Diamond. A few of my contacts fail to synchronize. I get the error Support Code:1
Any help??
Have you tried duplicating this again at all? Like with just one pic.
Support Code 1
Hi people,
Hi had this ERROR when I was synchronizing all my stuff in my kaiser. I found the solution with my friend google and this forum:
Click Start > Run and type the following: Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\ole32.dll
Click OK, Reboot your PC. Sync again.
After reregistering ole32.dll, you should scan all items on your mobile device for unsynced annotations. If there are, CHANGE the item on the mobile device and sync. This is the only way to keep all your changes made and sync them to your desktop PC.
Some of the items where having issues and that was the origin of "the support Code 1"
active sync support code:1 Alltel Touch Pro
Scan how, what do I do on the phone?
I'm getting a number of items that were recurring b'day entries
I found and deleted them on the PC, but I can't find them on the phone
to delete them. I'm still trying to setup the phone, so if needed, I can do a
cold reset. Alltel replaced a ppc6800 with the touch pro. *sigh* I miss
all the buttons. Anyway I do have good data in Outlook and a good PIMbackup
just before turning in the old phone. I tried the ole32.dll thing but no luck.
Can anyone suggest a button mapping program, the windows one only sees
the 'red' button as programmable? I'm also looking for a 'how-to' to use
SPB's P+ & Mobile shell instead of the touch3d thing. I have Resco Regedit
and Resco File Explorer.
Thanks
Activesync Support Code 1
I hope this is helpful to someone with Activesync problems.
I sync my AT&T Fuze with Outlook on my desktop using Activesync 4.5 on XP. Contacts, calendar, tasks, notes. My first sync just loaded up my Fuze from Outlook, based on existing data that was previously synced with 8525. Subsequent incremental syncs worked fine, until one day I started getting the infamous Support Code 1 along with a long list of Fuze updates that would not sync to Outlook. I was amazed at how little information there is on the web about these types of Activesync errors.
I finally figured it out. I had imported a new Outlook data file into Outlook, because I needed to convert it from Outlook format to Outlook Express format. After the conversion, I had left the second Outlook data file (mail, calendar, tasks) in Outlook, even though it was not being used. Apparently, the presence of this second Outlook data file was enough to confuse Activesync and prevent the syncing of new updates from my Fuze. After I deleted all traces of the data file from Outlook (and thus had only my single main data file), Activesync began working again, and the Support Code 1 did not occur. I realize that I am just describing symptoms, but since I can do what I need to do, I am not digging deeper. Perhaps there is a way to tell Activesync which Outlook data file to use, but I don't care.
change contact-pictures to 240x320 pixels
Make sure your contact-pictures do not exceed the 240x320 pixels format as larger pictures cannot be synced in outlook!

How do you scan for offending items on the phone? I have this same issue with 25 birthdays and anniversaries on my phone. They don't show up in the calendar on the phone or in Outlook 2007, though. How do I find them?

Did you ever get or find a answer to this question? I'm getting this error with a recurring task that occurred in the past. And the support code 1 indicates the item is on the phone. But I can't find a way to view old tasks on the phone at all. I go to the referenced year/month and it's simply not there.
I've wiped the device, but my situation is complicated by syncing with Win7 at home with no issues and win xp at work. Why mobile device under Win7 pushes old tasks you can't view on the phone is it's own issue.

Wow! Time flies, and it didn't take long for my reminder to reply to this to get buried WAY at the bottom of my Inbox. Sorry for the delay. The way that I solved this problem was through Outlook. I sync with Outlook, and I believe that I went in and deleted them from there. I believe that if you go into the Calendar in Outlook, and select "Events" for the current view, you may find some strange looking events. Mine were events that started out with a couple of blank spaces. I believe they were birthdays/anniversaries that didn't have any names in them, only spaces. At any rate, you should already have SOME indication as to the name of the events, and you should look for those and try to delete them.
I have since then flashed a couple of times, so I'm not sure if it got fixed by flashing or with the Outlook solution. Needless to say, I haven't had this problem since, so I suspect that it was a random problem that got fixed at least by reflashing. Sorry.

I fixed it through outlook as well. Though I did find some way to see the event on the phone. Thanks!

SOLVED. How to sync contacts from your Nokia phone to your HTC Windows Mobile phone?

Hello,
I had a Nokia 6620 and I synced all the contacts with my laptop running Vista through Nokia PC Suite. I have a folder named "Contacts" in Vista now, which is also linked to the Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail is supposed to be the updated version of Outlook Express. When I opened Windows Mobile Device Center to sync all the contacts and calendar items to my HTC Fuze, the options to sync my contacts and calendar are disabled. Am I doing something wrong here? How do I sync all the data, which was stored on my Vista system by Nokia PC Suite, with my HTC Fuze, without opening a Windows account? Is there any other application I can use for this, other than Windows Mobile Device Center?
Thanks,
Keith
I am really stuck with all my contacts in Windows "Contacts" folder and not being able to sync them with my HTC Fuze. I would really appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction or help me out. Thanks.
Now I could be way off here so apologies if that is the case. I think WMDC only deals with Outlook (not Outlook Express). If that is the case then try importing your contacts into Outlook and then re-setting up your sync settings. That might help.
Another thing to consider is to go into Activesync on your device and then options. Look at what it thinks it is syncing. If contacts are already set to sync with something, then uncheck this and run the WMDC connections wizard again. You may find that this time you can select the contacts folder this time.
As I said, I could be way off as I am not a computer guru by any stretch of the imagination. All the best.
Sorry, 1 more thought. You may want to try and uninstal Nokia PC suite-it could be that WMDC sees the contacts being synced with Nokia PC suite and thus wont allow it to sync with your HTC. If you do unistall just remember to back up your contacts etc otherwise you could end up loosing them all. Not good me thinks!
Nokia Suite maintains its own database which is independent of Outlook's. Both can reside on the PC without conflict, however, the OP needs to have the data (Contatcs/Tasks/Notes/Cal, etc) in Outlook to sync to WM devices.
@incisivekeith
Easiest way to deal with this is:
Export out of the PC Suite to csv format (comma separated)
Import into Outlook
Sync with addressbook in outlook (combine records)
Sync with phone using active sync
Thank you everyone for your responses, but I have been struggling with another major issue here now. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I was not able to select contacts and other data in Windows MObile Device Center, so I unstalled WMDC as well as the device driver update. I restarted my system and when I installed both the WMDC driver update and WMDC istself, my system doesn't recognize my Fuze anymore. Not only that, I don't have many options in WMDC now, and, the WMDC window doesn't open most of the times. I have tried uninstalling both of them again, installing their versions from Microsoft's Web site, but to no avail. So now, I have the following problems:
1. I don't have functioning WMDC
2. When I connect my Fuze, it is not recognized, although the system makes a sound that there is something connected on the USB port
3. Vista has Windows Mail, not Outlook or Outlook Express
In response to suggestions about Activesync, I just learned that Activesync is installable only on XP, not Vista. I have been struggling with these issues since today morning. This shouldn't be this difficult, after all.
I will try connecting my Nokia 6620 to my system and try to export the contacts to csv format. When I opened Nokia PC Suite without connecting my Nokia phone, the contacts list showed empty on the Suite, maybe because it doesn't store them on the system, and pulls them out only from the phone? I will find that out too.
If someone can, please let me know how to unistall WMDC properly and reinstall it so that it functions the way it did the first time. Are there any other free software to accomplish this? All the help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Connect Fuze to WMDC
Start - Settings - Connections - USB to PC
If the "Enable adv..." is checked, uncheck or vice versa

Thanks, that somehow helped, I am not sure how, but it did. When I cheched that option off, it again recognized my Fuze as a new device and installed the driver and WMDC, which works fine now, but still doesn't allow me to select contacts, calendar items, etc.
I followed a method here: http://manish.wordpress.com/2008/11/14/importing-contacts-to-windows-mobile-without-ms-outlook/
That method imported all data, with all contacts named "Unknown" and missing the details (phone numbers, address, etc.) of most of the contacts. So, I installed Outlook 2007 and tried to import the csv file in Outlook, but it gave me an error saying its translator was not able to read the csv file (the clipping of the error is attached). I have the following questions now:
1. How do I overcome the importing error
2. How do I sync contacts from Nokia phone directly into Outlook instead of Windows Mail, so that I can have the contacts in Outlook and then, I can just sync Outlook and Fuze.
3. Or, is there a way to have the contacts synced between Windows Mail and Outlook?
Again, thanks for all the help.
@incisivekeith
Haven't had a Nokia for some time but AFAIK the latest PhoneSuite allows you a full sync with outlook.
CSV can be tricky because it may fail at custom fields. Check the CSV file using Excel if you have all headers.
Worst case - take a deep breath and read what google has to say ...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...k&btnG=Google+Search&aq=1&oq=import+csv+file+
OP, do you have OL installed? Otherwise, get OL and setup your Nokia PC Suite to sync with OL, then you can bring your contact & calendar from the Nokia into OL, then sync to your WM device thereafter. If you are not going to have OL soon, then dump your Nokia contacts onto the SIM and drop the SIM into the WM, but you still need to find a way to "scrub" the data.
Almost the same reply but putting the contacts on the SIM usually truncates add info like long names and multi phone entries. Through outlook would be the best and easiest way IMO.

Agreed, hence the "scrub" I threw that in b/c it appears the OP doesn't have OL readily available.
PHEW , finally!! It took me the whole day to just figure this out, and now I am thinking why I didn't think about this earlier. But I know why, probably because I didn't want to install Outlook just for the purpose of syncing. Anyway, tyguy, you were right that there should be/was a provision in Nokia PC Suite to sync that contacts with Outlook. I had checked all the settings, but I was checking the settings with Windows Mail chosen, I could find that I could choose Outlook only when I decided to create new settings. I synced Nokia phone to Outlook and then Outlook to my Fuze. Almost all the contacts and calendar items are as they are on my Nokia phone, so I am extremely happy. Some of the contacts, very few, are missing the phone numbers, but I can do that manually for that less a number of contacts. Thank you everyone for helping me out. I really appreciate it.
I remember I had to do a lot of work to solve this, and now I want my E90 back, cause all issues of this bad phone. It is not "safe": does not always ring the alarm, appointments gestion is very very bad, contacts sucks.
I have now the trial version of outlook, now it is over on 31/01 and I have no idea hot to do. I can' t syncronize anymore cause I will not pay for Outlook.
The reality is: wm sucks, i' m waiting for android.
PS: I saved contacts then copied one by one in outlook.
(forgive my english)

[Q] ActiveSync help - can't find help anywhere else

When I try to stop actively syncing certain features (like contacts), it erases all my contacts from my phone. Help?
Here's the deal:
I have set up my WM6.5 standard phone (Samsung JACK) to sync with my home PC and my work PC. The other day I wanted to back-up my contacts to my home PC, but I don't want it to sync contacts on my work PC because then it will download the entire office directory - do not want.
So I selected "CONTACTS" to sync while at home. I did it, it saved all my contacts to my PC, and now I'm happy.
Trouble:
When I went into options and un-selected "CONTACTS" it now has to remove all my contacts from my phone. Why??? It says that it has to remove all sync'd contacts to stop it from sync'ing in the future. That makes no sense, and is now causing me trouble.
To get my contacts back on my phone, I sync'd it with my home PC. But, now I can't sync with my work PC because I can't remove CONTACTS from the sync list.
This is also true with CALENDAR. I was thinking of trying to sync my Outlook calendar with GOOGLE Calendar, but to start a new sync with Google I have to unselect my calendar sync. If I do that, it removes all of my calendar items. THIS IS NO GOOD!
How can I unselect something to stop it from sync'ing in the future but leave those items alone on my device and PC as they are.
Help?
I hate to "bump", but I was hoping someone here had experience with this.
I can't seem to get anybody to talk to me about this, and it is increasingly infuriating.
The only answer I'm finding is that we CAN'T.
ActiveSync will delete everything if you stop sync'ing. So, we have to use a 3rd party backup software to backup everything, delete the partnership, and then set the new thing to sync, and reload from the backup.
A pain in the you-know-what, but it looks like Microsoft designed it that way. (Booooo, hisssssss)
i'm looking forward to getting away from MS in my next phone.
