im looking for a tutorial on how to partition my sd card for my magic. i know how to do a basic partition but not ext2/3 etc etc.
i noticed alot of roms lately require this to work properly. also for compcache and apps2sd and stuff.
if anybody could help id appreciate it. thanks

another question - do i format the sd before or after the rom flash? i format the sd through my rav recovery then windows does not recognise it????

if you have Amon_Ra's recovery image on your phone, you can do the partitioning with one click, and it will do fat32+ext2+swap for you.
Start asking your questions in the right sub-forum (Q&A) (Theme) or even in (General), or i will be forced to ban you for 3 days or till you learn.

Since I hijacked a thread and it got closed since it was irrelavent to the subsection I have come here. I didn't want to create another thread so I hijacked a useless one. But if someone could answer my question it'd be appreciated. Problem is, I put the .nbh on the reformated SD card, insert it run bootloader, it wont flash via SD card, it doesn't read the contents. Yes, I put it on as KAISIMG.nbh, I have formated it to FAT32, I have my phone HardSPL, I dont understand I've read the instructions like 30 times. Plus I've been flashing since 8125 and flash my friends 8525 periodically this way. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've taken a look around and haven't found anyway to erase the ext2 partition of the memory card from the phone itself just wondering if its a possability. I thought the thread on how to partition from the memory card might shed some light but if there was the answer there I missed it.

I hope im posting this in the right place. I am VERY VERY new to rooting. I have read and heard alot about it but after reading the thread at xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869 I decided to go ahead and root my phone. The primary motivation for rooting is the ability to run applications from the SD card because my Hero runs really slow. I flashed the ROM and created a backup but after trying many ways to download apps to SD, the last one read said I have to partition my memory card. The catch is, the thread didnt tell me that it would delete everthing on the card when i partitioned the memory card, following the thread i factory reset my phone. Doing this deleted all my save data and backups and now im worse off than i was before. After briefly describing my situation im hopeing that someone out there can help me.
QUESTIONS
1. Are there any ROM's that you can flash on cellsouth HERO that will work
2. How do I install apps to my SD card
3. Is there a guide on "how to" customize the HERO head to toe.
1. This is the only rom i have seen for Cell South http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731404
2. That rom should have apps2sd built in, so as long as you partition your sd card correctly, it will automatically do it for you.
3. Check the themes forum for more info.

Flashed the ROM? What do you mean by that? what ROM?
Sorry your in the wrong section..this is a QUESTION..there is a Q&A sub forum for these. i know your new but you had to see that when you were going through th forums to get here.
I am currently on the newest nightly for the Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 go to that thread download the newest nightly then go to the brainfukt kernel thread and download the latest stable kernel he has. click this link as you will need the google apps http://mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-mdpi-20100816-signed.zip . Go to recovery flash the rom then the kernel then the google apps then reboot.
assuming you partitioned your sd card properly you will have the ability to use apps2sd
in order to use it you will need to go to ur settings and open CyanogenMod settings and choose applications. In there you will need to tick the box marked move apps and then choose external on the drop down menu. once you do that then you will be able to install all your apps straight to your sd card and any that installed automatically once you synced your account you can go in to the main settings application setting and physically move those to sd card by choosing the app and it will give you an option for that. Probably the wrong place to ask this, but can't post to the TB Dev forum just yet. I'm trying to figure out how to mount sd-ext on my TB, but currently haven't figured out where to go to figure it out. I saw there was the script that Firerat had made for CM5, and I'm not sure if that will help create my own script possibly, but figured I would ask here first to see if anyone has already created a solution for this.

At a minimum, you should say which ROM you're running, and how you've partitioned your SD card.
Sorry about that. Okay, currently using das-BAMF 1.6.2 with the included kernel. I have partitioned it with 512MB ext and 32MB swap.

I feel your pain.
I can’t answer your question. But how did you partition your SD card: manually, rom manager, or with software such as minitool partition wizard?
I partitioned it from Recovery. Doing it from ROM Manager caused it to hang. It would reboot into Recovery and try to start the partition process but nothing happened. First time I ever tried I had NO idea how long I should have expected it to run, but I figured out after 3 hours that this was abnormal. lol.
Doing it from Recovery though even has more options for sizes, and only will take about 4-5 min on the microSDHC that comes with it. I just found it odd that partitioning it from Recovery directly resulted differently since that's where ROM Manager tries to partition as well. Clearly the process from ROM Manager =/= the process from Recovery.
I bought a new Kingston 32gb class10 microsdcard, because i decided to test Data2sd on my tf700.
I installed data2sd zip from recovery and when I booted up it said "Encryption unsuccessful", and I can only reset tablet.
I cant make a factory reset as it just reboots and displays "Encryption unsuccessful" again. I can go into recovery TWRP but all my files on my internal storage is gone, so I cant flash CROMI again.
So I copied the CROMI rom on my 32GB fat32 formatted card, but in TWRP console it says E: Unable to mount '/external_sdcard'
I should have never done this

Apparently you didn't partition or format your card correctly - did you use gparted?
This indeed sounds like yo uare one of the many many, many that still used MiniTool, our warnings notwithstanding. Try Gparted.
Furthermore, if you can access any other storage partition in TWRP and would like to copy your backup(s) so you can reinstall you can do so with the AROMAFile Manager found here:

Boot into recovery, flash the AFM zip file and it will start the file manager. It's a convenient option to have, but it does take a little getting used to.
I used minitool. Any gparted alternative on windows machines? I have ubuntu on my virtual machine but it cant see the internal card reader :/
TWRP couldnt recognize my Kingston 32gb, thats why it was unable to mount it. I used a old 512mb sd card and I have managed to install CROMI again. Awesome!
One thing I find confusing reading the Data2SD thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962507)
I am confused as to whether I need 2 partitions or 1. I always transfer files between my tablet and computer via USB cable. So should I make one 32gb ext4 partition? Or make a small 8mb fat32 partition and the second as my ext4 partition?
Allright got my questions answered else where.
I am using the Gparted CD to boot up from and format my SD card.
To anyone else do not use MiniTool as it doesnt work!

If I'd come ina bit sooner, I'd had advised youthe route you haven taken so props for your self-sufficiency. :victory:
I have already taken up the issue with MiniTool still being recommended with a senior moderator.

Yeah saw your post on Data2sd thread. The post Muffin has made should be edited, as ppl tend to read the first 3 posts from the op and not the replies... Oh well no harm other than many posts from users. For a second I thought I turned my tablet to a brick..

Yeah, the latter effect is what I'm trying to stop: I was in the same situation, with the added bonus of nobody having figured out how to recover. It took me an entire evening and a lot of stress to get back my microSD card after it stopped working altogether. Once a thread gets more than, say, 300 posts you can't really blame a new reader for not going through all of them -- the OP should be updated, however, when an issue is as clearly established as this one is.
