[Q] Cellular South HTC Hero Rooting - Hero CDMA Android Development

I hope im posting this in the right place. I am VERY VERY new to rooting. I have read and heard alot about it but after reading the thread at xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869 I decided to go ahead and root my phone. The primary motivation for rooting is the ability to run applications from the SD card because my Hero runs really slow. I flashed the ROM and created a backup but after trying many ways to download apps to SD, the last one read said I have to partition my memory card. The catch is, the thread didnt tell me that it would delete everthing on the card when i partitioned the memory card, following the thread i factory reset my phone. Doing this deleted all my save data and backups and now im worse off than i was before. After briefly describing my situation im hopeing that someone out there can help me.
QUESTIONS
1. Are there any ROM's that you can flash on cellsouth HERO that will work
2. How do I install apps to my SD card
3. Is there a guide on "how to" customize the HERO head to toe.

1. This is the only rom i have seen for Cell South http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731404
2. That rom should have apps2sd built in, so as long as you partition your sd card correctly, it will automatically do it for you.
3. Check the themes forum for more info.

Flashed the ROM? What do you mean by that? what ROM?

Sorry your in the wrong section..this is a QUESTION..there is a Q&A sub forum for these. i know your new but you had to see that when you were going through th forums to get here.

I am currently on the newest nightly for the Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 go to that thread download the newest nightly then go to the brainfukt kernel thread and download the latest stable kernel he has. click this link as you will need the google apps http://mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-mdpi-20100816-signed.zip . Go to recovery flash the rom then the kernel then the google apps then reboot.
assuming you partitioned your sd card properly you will have the ability to use apps2sd
in order to use it you will need to go to ur settings and open CyanogenMod settings and choose applications. In there you will need to tick the box marked move apps and then choose external on the drop down menu. once you do that then you will be able to install all your apps straight to your sd card and any that installed automatically once you synced your account you can go in to the main settings application setting and physically move those to sd card by choosing the app and it will give you an option for that. If you need any help or advise during that process feel free to shoot me an email or pm

Need help with some sounds.

Hey there all I just need some help I have some sounds that are from the hero and magic official roms that I have collected from these forums. instead of running off SDcard I want them on the phones memory since I have a MT3g I have plenty of mem and don't run BIG apps.
What I have been doing is running ADB and pushing files from my hard drive to the phones memory in /system/media/audio/ directory. I have to do this every time I re flash a rom. I would like to make this easy by flashing it from zip or in an APK if possible... Do you guys think this would be possible?
First of all, wrong forum. Please post questions like this in the General forum.
Secondly, you can create a folder on your SD card called 'media' and store your files there in the same structure as you'd put them on your ROM system area.
It'll still find them there.
OOps sorry I will post over there. I thought since it had to do with flashing or building an APK it would be fine here.
I have run if from my Class 6 SD like that but I still get a delay for notifications. So as I said I dont want to run from SD.
But thanks..

Apps2SD with Fresh 0.7 rom + blue theme?

I have the 0.7 rom load with both patchs and the blue theme, I want to try out apps 2 SD i just didnt know the best route in doing so, for it to work correctly with your rom. If i use the format function in the recovery menue would it automatically save my apps on the SD and work properly or would i have to reinstall them?

(I personally don't like apps2sd but if you really have that many apps...)
Yea. Backup your sd card (it will get wiped). Boot in to recovery and create swap+ext2+fat32 and then convert ext2 to ext3 (all are options in the recovery menu). It will move everything for you.
Why don't you like apps 2 sd? I just figure if you have that you won't have worry about internal memory if you wanted to have a lot o

This is why he doesn't like it:

**My note about Apps2SD: I added support for it in this release of the rom because people who were using it in other roms that tried to install this rom were receiving errors. Here's my point of view on it.
I played with it for over 8 hours today between implementing it and then testing it to make sure this fix would work. I have personally come to not like apps2sd, but I am including it for those who use it.
The reason I don't like it is because it puts your phone at a huge risk of having problems once anything goes wrong. If you install a program that causes issues, a nandroid backup will not resolve the issue because the application is installed on your SD card not your phone. If your phone starts going crazy as reported here and here, then even just a restore possibly won't fix it. You might need to go as far as to wipe your SD card too. If you are lucky enough to have a restore fix your problems you will still need to reinstall every app, even if you didn't wipe your card. And on top of that when you try to reinstall any app it will think it's still installed, even though you restored your phone. But when you click "uninstall" it will just freeze half the time because there's nothing on the phone for it to actually install. I have also read many threads that say if you happen to boot the phone up without the SD card in then it will screw everything up.
So now maybe you are wondering why I would add Apps2SD support in this rom. In order for people who are currently using Apps2SD to upgrade to this rom I must support it or require them to do a hard reset before coming to fresh. Clearly I don't want you to have to reset so I have supported it. With that said: I personally recommend not using it. This rom will auto-use it if your SD card is formatted for it (fat32+ext2+swap partitions) but it won't use it if you are only partitioned as 1 fat32. My suggestion is to stick to the 1 partition and let your applications install on the phone. Linux is not like Windows in the sense that it will run the same whether you phone has 140 megs free of storage space or 10 megs free. So unless you plan on installing 100 apps, I don't see the practical purposes of using Apps2SD. But a lot of people like it.
Now with all of THAT said -- this rom officially has and supports Apps2SD. It is a program that I think has the possibility of being great, but has to work within the confines of the phone which means tricking Android in to thinking that the applications are installed on the phone when they aren't. That is what leads to all the problems mentioned above.

If i have apps2sd already from the previous rom i don't have to re-do it for the new one correct?
no you dont.
using apps2sd2 problems
I followed all the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5618439#post5618439 for apps2sd2 yet when I open the app, it STILL says Oops, you have to run through the tutorial to set it up. I've DONE THIS. I'm extermely frustrated. I have no idea what more to do. My sd card is partitioned correctly. I've run all the commands listed in that tutorial. PLS HELP! Also all my apps are showing in /system/sd/app AND data/app. Is this correct? Why won't Apps2sd2 work for me? I really need some troubleshooting help.
I have a rooted CMDA HTC Hero using the Fresh ROM. Also is there a way to still get Sprint TV using this ROM?
Fresh .7 doesn't support A2SD, only Fresh 1.0 & 1.1.

In some cases, putting a separate partition on your SD card and formatting to etx3 can be beneficial, especially with the Galaxy S devices. In day-to-day use with others phones though, you'll benefit far more from the extra storage than having multiple partitions. Do you have a Galaxy S mate?

I found this for you, from the Aria forum:
To Enable A2SD:
Backup your applications
Backup your sdcard
Partition your sdcard with ROM Manager with an ext partition option. (ROM manager is in Market)
This should start a special mode of clockwork recovery, which will partition the sdcard.
That's the only reason you'd want to partition your card, so that if you're running out of memory you can move some of your apps to the SD card. ROM Manager is very easy to use, but I'll be here if you need me Good luck!

To follow onto this question. 1st time droid user, limited linux knowledge. I am running 2.2 on a brand new optimus t(mobile). I plan on rooting using z4root and flashing ROM (maybe megatron). Sdcard new (unused) only thing I have done with the phone is install a bunch of apps (which I can replace) and load my contact/gmail account.
I notice that my phone indicates 143kb internal available, so I assume I will have space limitations soon. It is my understanding that one of the benefits or rooting and putting on custom rom is the ability to have your phone recognize portions of the sd card as internal memory and, thus, "create" more internal space.
Considering my phone and my desire, can I go through the process of 1) rooting (z4root) 2) backup (custom recovery) 3) flash new rom/kernal 4) dump back up from sdcard onto PC via card reader 5) Use your above method to partition card?
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated, including partition types/sizes, process, procedure....or just tell me if I am an idiot and am way off base.
Thanks a lot

How to get rid of levels on Internal memory due to upgrading to 5.0 and back sd 0/0

I'm going to apologize in advance that this may not come out correctly. But tonight I tried to flash 5.0 on my HTC One M8 using Vanilla Pop, I went onto skydragon and downloaded the firmware from there and then loaded Vanillapop. When I went to upload my apps from titanium backup, they were all gone. Upon further inspection, what happened was a new level of folders laid on top of the old ones, so on this new level all the folders are empty and to get to my old ones I have to click on a "0" and then I can see all my backups and saved information. I decided to go back to 4.4.4 and Viperrom but when I reloaded the 4.4.4 frimware, it created another level. so now to get to my files on the internal memory card I have to click 0/0/foldername to get to my files and viperrom won't recognize the extra levels and give me an error of a bad internal memory card. How to I eliminate these two extra levels that were created or how do I point ViperRom in the right direction so I can setup my phone. I am definitely back on 4.4.4 so I don't think it is incorrect firmware.
Thank you and please let me know what details I can share if my description wasn't clear.
Thank you,

If your items are restored I would save them to your sd card also save the rom zip that you want to install to your sd card and also do a cloud back up then just take your sd card out and go to recovery and do a complete wipe of everything before doing so go to mount and make sure everything is mounted then wipe everything including internal memory.
If it were me I would have the newest ruu on another sd card and after wiping everything just run the ruu off your sd card which when you go to fastboot it should pick up the ruu on your sd card, just make sure to click yes to run the ruu.
This will get all your issues fixed and get you back to 100% and you can then install whichever rom you want from your other sd card and restore all your apps and so on.

What recovery version are you using? I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is caused by a bug in the Official TWRP 2.8.1.0. Captain_Throwback has a version I have been using that is working flawlessly. You can download it from here: https://s.basketbuild.com/filedl/de.../TWRP_Recovery_2.8.1.0_M8_exFAT_test_CPTB.img
You would still need to cleanup what has been done as mentioned by M9guy, but the new recovery should prevent you from getting into that situation again.
You can check out the RUU from dottat here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ent/ruu-m8vzw-4-4-4-s-off-onlynewest-t2914914
I'm using Philz CWM recovery. I'm trying to look on the internet but can't find a link that explains how to eliminate the levels of folders that I found. I have a Nandroid, if I load this will it change the internals to go back the way they were? I'm scared I'll mess things up worse then they are.
I'd stay where I am except somehow after flashing a few roms I have acquired a bug that is driving me nuts, I can't get rid of the grey bubble that no calendars selected and I can't hit buttons/apps/letters that are below the bubble and it is persistent. It won't go away.

That's your mistake. Philz is junk and should be avoided at all costs. I have read nothing but horror stories from people who have used it.
I went back and flashed TWRP and then formatted data to cleanly wipe everything. Now I'm reloading Viper but when I get to the setup screen it still has problems identifying the internal memory. I can't use the walk through setup which includes the back up. I'm trying to reflash the rom one more time to see if things change.
Thank you everyone for your help and if anyone has anything to add please let me know.

Not sure if Wipeing from TWRP will do it or not. I think you have to install the Stock Recovery and do a factory reset from there. Then you can install TWRP. Stock Recovery does more than TWRP when wiping.
Yes, I first installed stock recovery, did the factory reset and then loaded TWRP.
I see S-off reads off in bootloader so I think I am ok with that.
Thanks everyone for your help. I think I got it. The phone commented that the internal memory card wasn't valid but other than the setup wizard everything seems to be working and I got rid of the levels and the persistent, no calendar message seems to be gone.

The problem isn't that the recoveries junk it's that it hasn't been updated in ages. Its running old device files creating issues with newer roms and the Android multiple user accounts creating 0 folders. I don't think it's fair to call it junk since it's not supported and hasn't been for quite a while . The developer has stated this. A pretty well known developer has kept the recovery up to date which should correct this issue if you still wanted to run his recovery. I won't stand behind it because I haven't run it but typically this developer is good as gold. Here's the link we all know the name.

M9guy, thank you very much for the suggestion. I was scared to do what you requested in fear of messing things up worse then they were. Right now the only problem I'm having is I can't use the setup tool which messed up trying to auto load all of my apps. I had to go through all my apps manually and bring them back. Aside from that everything seems to be working fine. The stupid bubble telling me no calendars selected is gone and the two additional levels are gone from the system. I'm now using TWRP recovery instead of Philz. Thank you much !!!!!

Your welcome, glad you got it fixed. I know it all seems like a lot, you just have to take baby steps I was the same way, but once you start doing things you will realize oh its not that difficult. You just have to read up and then read again and normally you can get your needs accomplished. There is always people willing to help as we were in your same position at one point and someone helped us the same so its good karma for us to do the same and pay it forward. We are all grasshoppers in a large field all still learning. There are always many ways to do things some may be harder but if the end result gets you fixed really that is all that matters and you learn as you go. Have fun with it and reap the benefits !!!!!!

The only lingering problem from trying to upgrade my phone to Lollipop is now my phone won't allow me to use setup wizard and when I try to load apps from the Google Play store, my phone is no longer listed as being a Verizon Wireless phone, it now looks like my Nexus 7 which reads "No Carrier" is there a trick to getting that back?

Not sure but maybe somehow your cid got changed you can also change it to cid 11111111 for super cid, or I do believe factory verizon m8 should be VZW__001 to change it to that go to fastboot usb and with adb tools enter the command
fastboot oem writecid VZW__001
and hit enter and it should confirm.
You can check this out at the link below.

[Q] Rooting info needed / Please help soon.

Hi
I wanted to ask something about Rooting but couldn't find specific section for it or if there is, i am sorry i couldn't locate it. I apologize for it.
I have a Huawei Ascend G610-U20 with Android 4.2.1. The internal memory is 4GB but only 1.86GB is useable (on format). I am using Stock ROM.
I have some applications which are installed in phone memory (sdcard 0, not external sdcard). For example Facebook and by default it doesn't have the option of shifting to SD card, that option is turned off. Similarly this is off for Mix Cloud app. There are so many other apps as well. I use Dodol launcher and all it's themes are on phone memory and cannot be migrated to external SD card.
I found this thread of making SD card as default location for installation. I didn't do it being afraid to make any disastrous changes to my phone.
Then i got to know about rooting and i was again afraid of bricking my phone. This is why i am asking it here. I had previously another Android phone and i rooted it and then it started some problems mainly software clashes. e.g. when viber is being used and a phone call comes, phone restarted. I thought of at least considered that time that this is due to rooting.
My sole purpose of doing any of above method is, to be able to migrate those apps to external SD card which are by default not able to be migrated in stock ROM. Else than this i am not much advanced user and nor do i want to go further deeper.
What you recommend and what is the best way to do.
Just a point to mention, in case of using that 1st method of Android ADB method, i think it would need me to format the phone and then reinstall the apps. Am i right?
Please guide me.
Thanks in advance.
