HTC announced they'll use the four-pole iphone like headset connector on their future phones.
With micro-usb is becoming the new standard that might be a smart move.
But some will miss EXTusb's possibility to have a small (wired) remote control in their headset that can do a bit more than the one-button remote on the iphone-like headset connector. So, if HTC would include a good speech control (that responds to proper english ;-) it would be a brilliant move.
Mini usb 3 has also just been created, although the connectors are about the ugliest thing i've ever seen:

Congratulations to HTC for another ****-move.
3.5mm for audio and mini-usb for data and charging.
that should be the standard now and for the next 5+ years.
As far as i know from 2010 all phones, not just from htc and other devices, like cameras etc, must have micro-usb3 connector as standard,at least in Europe.

praise the lord that should be a commandment lol i hate mini usb they always get loose after a while whereas 3.5 has staying power. not to mention you never need an adapter. and if you have both on a device it lessens the wear and tear on the usb .. i have a nearly brand new titan with an already finnicky usb port

and thats what I heard as well- assuming you meant mini-usb 2. Besides, it wasn't "must have" it seemed more a gentlemens agreement between manufacturers to "try" to standardise on it. Doesn't mean they have to ......

Nope, it's really going to be micro usb. Check out these links.
But, it might be a little comfort to babijoee that if it really becomes a standard, mini-usb might just become a legacy standard. At least that's what i hope. And it's also what already i hope for usb 3, actually

Micro USB connectors have just been agreed with all the major manufacturers to be the connector of choice for charging phones.....

The most shocking part of all of this is that Apple's in on it. What? Apple knows what a mini/micro USB connector is?

you cannot escape! assimilate now!
This weekend was the best example why phones should have mini-usb connectors.
I had 6 friends from all over the world in town (Asia, US and Europe).
From gphones to blackberries they all had mini-usb plugs and were able to use my power adapters (I have a tytn 2).
Now if they could only also standardize a 3.5mm audio plug, we would be golden.

Or 2.5 mm. That would allow for sleeker designs. But only if all the big manufacturers of phones and mp3 players reach concensus.

Yes.
And the iphone is the best example that 3.5mm is possible in a thin and slick design.
HTC just needs to fire its designers and hire some apple designers.

Also look at the Palm Pre ... Apple Designers ... looks like the old xda in black. Hahaha.
Just saying that you can get a very, very nice and small design with mini-usb + 3.5mm audio plug. So I don't see any reason why the standard phone plugs for the next 5 years should be anything else.
I like miniUSB, but I'm fine with microUSB. It'll allow standardized plugs across all phones, even hyper-thin designs that are physically too small for miniUSB. That's a GOOD thing. And it seems like a slightly more durable connector to me, but I don't have any evidence for that.

i have the akg k370 whcih dont work with my SGS, since the order of the pins is differend (mic and ground are switched).
since i love that headset im looking for a working adaptor
i couldnt find any in the internet
so far i managed to solder my own from an old adapter which didnt use its microphone pin.
but since it looks...lets say...selfcrafted im looking for one that works that u dont have to cut open and change the pins your self (or add a wire as i did)
if u know of any working ones which use all 4 pins and switch ground and mic pls tell me where i can buy em...
Similar issue here. I have Dr. Dre Beats and from what I've found from reading through is that I need to switch the ground/mic wires? I can do this if necessary and can even get a nice job done of it, but wouldn't this break my headset for other phones/players?
Point being a nice adapter would be sweet.
I bought this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290460258359&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Still waiting it gets here.
Surely if the ground connection was different then no standard plugs/phones would work or does the phone dynamically change the ouputs on pins depending on what's plugged in (since it has to support tv out as well)?

got the same ones, they work fine.
those adaptors and the nokia ones work, but they make the cable too long besides considering that the headsets mentioned already has a mic and you add another adaptor mith a mic, its simpler to just have an adaptor that switches the mic and ground terminals around
so what i did is i made this

i took my nokia ad-57 adaptor, cut the wire, cannibalized a female 3.5mm 4pole from some generic adaptor, soldered the wire so that ground from the 3.5male is soldered to the second ring from tip. thus, simply, the female of the adaptor is wired like an iphone compatible, and the male is wired galaxy s compatible.
if you cant be bothered to diy, you can get this http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm

damn, that's expensive. but I guess it'll be worth it to make my "expensive" headphones work, lol.

I had to stick black tape around my mic button on the headphones I used to use on my iPhone, I kept the same headphones cause they were amazing sound and pricey and didn't want to chuck them away, Didn't realize it would be a problem lol, I want one of these adapters from a Uk store

You can say that the adapter is good, perfect, excellent, nice,ok,etc but not worth at all 17$ for wires is pure stealing
I got a blackberry headset from my local street market. The earphones that came with it sound horrible, and the mic is a bit soft. There is no need to change anything however and the button works.
I'm planning on using it with the aux in of my car radio. With computer speakers it seemed to work (no echo). And it works well with a headphone.

This is my first post on XDA so a big HI to all...
I think this is an excellent car holder due to the fact that this one is very minimal and by the looks of things... it could support a DHD in a case. I could be wrong but the lower 'arms' look flexible enough to take a DHD thats a few mm larger. Perhaps someone could confirm.
Furthermore, if a manufacturer could please produce a desk charger that supports cases on phones since i think a lot of people, including me, would be interested in this.
Do anybody know if we can use a HD2 carholder for our DHD?
I do know - yes you can!

Agreed, although I think a combination of the CU S400 'stand' with this 'body / holder' would be perfect as the CU S400 mount and stand is great but the holder gets in the way of the buttons....
It may look crap but in terms of not hiding the connections or the power button, it's much better, due the 3 points of holding the DHD...
and it's much cheaper (even more if bought on another webstore)

True, the only issue I have with it is the 'arm'. It doesnt look too flexible.

All I have done is strech it open slightly to fit the DHD and it is great! I have full access to all buttons it swivels, pivots, rotates and flexes to all positions! It even holds the DHD pretty tightly without making any marks
I'm just worried that during a very large bump it may slip out so would prefer to have something like this with the 3-point 'holder' of the offical DHD.
If someone could make something like this......
and throw in an official HTC charger and audio jack I would definately buy one.

About that craddle looks very nice, but for me that use the DHD to output music to my music phono input from my car, it's no good.
It would be cool if the cradle was able to plug an independent 3.5mm phono cable. That way, it's a crap.
Other thing is, I always use the DHD on GPS mode, in landscape. Don't feel any security with cradle when in landscape mode.
DHD on order, just poking around to see what the deal is with car kits and the like.
Got a rubbery case for my HD2 so always had to take it out, put it in the cradle and then back again when I got out of the car, not a huge issue but sliding the phone in and out of the cradle eventually cut away at the rubbery skin on the HD2, presumably clipping the DHD in and out of an official or at least close too, kit will cause similar damage to the phone?

Probably not the same problem, since DHD doesn't have the rubbery skin but an aluminum case instead. However, if the kit is poorly made, I guess it could scratch the aluminum case.
I can categorically state that this holder works with the DHD, and it doesnt block any of the connectors or buttons : http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/windowseat-handsfree
It has fully adjustable clamps at the back that can accomodate the Desire HD no problem, and the holder holds the DHD firmly. I had my DHD in one of these earlier this week in a Carphonewarehouse store.
Nonetheless, I think I am still going to wait for the official one as I like the idea of this magical cable that "tells" the phone to switch to Car mode automatically. But for those that dont care so much about that, I can confirm this Griffin holder really does do the trick. CPW sell it for about £30 but I am sure it can be obtained for less on the internet.
surely there is no substitute to a Brodit

Does anybody know of a simple and guaranteed to work 3.5mm headset (not headphone) to headset adapter that makes iPhone compatible headsets work with Galaxy S?
I have Sennheiser MM 60i, but the mic does not work.
I do NOT want to buy headPHONES adapter (mic doesn't work).
Neither do I want to buy a headset adapter with a built-in separate mic (want to use the higher quality mic in the headset I have).
There are tons and tons of adapters on eBay, but almost all of them are either headPHONE adapters (only 4-pin to 3-pin) or come with their own mic.
Is there a 4-pin to 4-pin 3.5mm female to male adapter that crosses over the wires from iPhone-standard to Nokia/Galaxy S standard?
Am nearly going mad trying to find an adapter like this at local stores.
Any help appreciated!

Now I'm not sure it will work 100% but if you can wait a couple of weeks I'll know for sure then, and if it doesn't I've only lost $1
or with decent soldering skills you can make one
i made one from an old nokia ad57 adapter cable and a female four pole plug
i cut the wires from the nokia adaptor and soldered the female four pole on switching the sleeve with ring ( i.e. tip/ring/ring/sleeve male plug to tip/ring/sleeve/ring female plug)
this is the result

I got one when I purchased some headphones that i got that are made by urbanears.
It seems to work well, the company calls it the "nokia adapter", however it makes the headphones work perfectly on my phone.
Does the urbanears adapter only work with headPHONES or also with headSET including the mic?
Yes, I guess I could dig out my soldering iron, source the 4-pin 3.5mm plugs and start fiddling, but I was kind hoping for a $4 eBay part to do the trick

I will wait for your review
Or if anyone can post a detail tutorial to explain how to do this adapter manually? Does it reduce the sound quality?
doesnt reduce sq afaik and thats using a very revealing iem like the triplefi10
also the mod is really easy, the most difficult part is soldering because the plug is small but not really difficult as to require special tools or special skills
1. i just cut the nokia adaptor
2. then i separate the 4 wires inside and determine which is tip, ring, ring, sleeve via a tester/multi tester, the wires are colored so write down which is which
3. then i got the female plug and used a cutter on the rubber around it, slice it down the middle on two sides so you can open it. if you have a threaded female plug, you just open it.
4. then you solerd the wire according to the pattern i posted above. only switch the ring and sleeve around.
5. close up everything and youre done
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's simply an extension lead, although it only contains three wires, so you have to completely strip the socket and jack and rewire it for it to work. I bought one but before i could wire, the vacuum took the socket it from me xD I really need to get around to buying another one.

iphone/Nokia headset
If you buy a set of Creative HS730i headsets - you get Nokia adapters with them. They are about £40 with delivery, I only purchased them for the Nokia adapter as I couldn't find any adapters sold so I could em use my iphone headset with my Samsung Galaxy S. I did email Creative to see if they sold the adapters on their own but they said no!!!
I have not been able to confirm if they work as I am using a custom rom and kernel, which breaks the headset calling capability.
However I dont see why it would not work, as that is what is advertised to do.

interesting i saw this once before and thought it was just a 2.5 to 3.5 or a 4 pong to 3 prong adapter. It dose not really clearly state that it will convert the ground and mic so iphone type headsets work with the SGS.
From the the very little description they give i would say it just makes the output to just a 3 prong stereo output. Meaning it disables the mic so even iphone headsets will work like regular headphones. Which really defeats the purpose, no way to know until someone buys it.
BTW what Kernel/ROM combo are you using that breaks the headset calling? i myself got speedmod and doc and if i use my Samsung headset everything is fine.
Hey Folks,

According to the reviews these are not genuine cables.
United Integral says that this is a "Blackberry" cable and even uses a picture (illegally) of a Blackberry cable, an OEM one. This cable is NOT Blackberry and doesn't work as a data and charging cable for my phone. DO NOT PURCHASE this if you want a cable that works.

Nice, that looks pretty rugged, finally someone realizes how fragile that portion of the cable is.
What's better about the bb cable? I use that same exact bb cable and a bb charger since it has more charging amps

Thicker and far more rugged than our crappy stock Epic cable.

Ah ok, yes that is true. samsung has had crappy usb cables for years. The longer, softer rubber cable that comes with the tmo galaxy 4g seems to be of better quality than the harder, less flexible cable that came with my epic...
tmo galaxy s also comes with a 1650mah battery compared to our 1500... i stole my gf's battery got the time being (shhh) lol. Anyone have a link to where I can buy a oem 1650 battery? Preferably ebay? I got ebay bucks
for my fellow ebayers. i am going to order a few from this guy. $1.19 shipped? cant beat it with a stick!
Edit: it would help it I posted the link huh?

This guy raises a good point
I ordered 2 of these back in May, & believe me they're well worth it. Only drawback is the length of the cable, but I got a 5 ft. USB extension cable from Dollar Tree=)

And it works just as good?? I've used many of those extensions and they've never been able to supply enough power for my external harddrives to ever work of them so it may not be supplying the full 500mA
What do you guys use these cables for? Apart from what comes with the phone already, I mean.

Same thing as the stock cable, they just work better. The stock cable is about as useful as a sack of poop.
$40 + shipping is really too much for me. So I decided to take the plunge and get one of the Deconn adapters that have been floating around on ebay. Interestingly enough, the functionality is just as good as the OEM Analogix adapters.

I purchased my unit from kangyi2011 (link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261249574227) for $18, including shipping. The only colour available was white—which looks surprisingly good in contrast to my pitch black Nexus 4 and TV—as if it is highlighted in a dark sea of modern electronics. You can clearly see the Slimport branding on the adapter even though it is not OEM.
UPDATE: A quick ebay search showed me that the adapter is now available in black, and has an additional micro usb cable for charging, which was not included with my unit.
The build quality of the adapter is quite good, as all of the parts seem to be pieced together securely. The ports are solid and the micro usb cable plugs in easily and securely to my phone.
In addition to the HDMI port, there is a micro usb port on the other side of the adapter to allow for charging during use. This is a very important feature as I noticed that my Nexus' battery drained very quickly while mirroring, even at minimum brightness.

As I mentioned earlier, the adapter works perfectly, mirroring my Nexus 4's screen at native 1080p. It is fully compatible with Android 4.3 and its updates; i.e. screen does not force into landscape now. I have not included any pictures of the adapter during use because it has the same functionality as the Analogix adapter.
The only gripe I have about the product is that the phone connection cable (which cannot be removed) is rather short. This means that you must keep your phone close to the adapter during use. This may make it difficult to play games, as the adapter can get in the way. Mirroring media is not a problem as you do not need to be touching the phone.
PROS:
- Solid construction
- Full functionality in comparison to OEM adapters
- Cheap price
CONS:
- Relatively long shipping wait
- Connection cable is a bit short

The nexus 4 screen ain't 1080p... so I am having a tough time believing it is being output at that rez. Are you sure it's native?
How long is the cable?

Yeah, my TV registers the output res as 1920x1080. How? Slimport magic.
The cable is about 5 inches

Thank you very much!
WOW, I was looking for this! It's hard to say if these chinese products have really good quality, especially when we're talking about a new technology.
I think I'll get one, since shipping costs to Brazil make the OEM one even more expensive!
I just want to ask you if you noticed some problem with it's frame rate, cause some hdmi and vga chinese cables, sometimes, even having the expected resolution, show problems with that. Have you tried some games just to see how does it go?
Thank you very very much, just for writing this complete review you helped me a lot! Cheeeers from BR!
Score, that's worth $18 any day. Thanks!

No problem, glad you like it!
No frame rate issues most of the time, but there are some microstutters (barely noticeable) during 1080p playback of certain movie files (wmv, mkv). This is to be expected though.

I found that sometimes I have to plug in twice (so plug, unplug, and replug) on my nexus 4 in order for my tv to detect the signal. I don't get any problems after that though.
