Change contact type text in contact list - Touch Cruise General

As you know, the contactlist shows the type of contact to the right of each name. In WM6.0 this was just one character (H, M, W, E), but after I upgraded my ROM to WM6.1 (the one from HTC itself), the single character was replaced by a larger text (Home, Mobile number, Tel. work, Email...or something like that. I got a Dutch language phone, so I guess the English translations). I find this quite annoying, because this way there is less space for the name itself and is often abbreviated (cut off).
Is there a way (i.e. by changing the registry) to change these large texts to single characters again?
Thanks for your help.

Hm... could you post a screenshot?
Since I DO have only single letter in contacts. On the other hand, each contact is consisting of 2 lines... Check contacts options?

It looks like this (see attachement) and if I change the contact options, it indeed shows two lines, but again with long text contact types.

OK, it was long shot anyway...
Most probably it's ROM related...

Text Messaging Issues (Help please!)

I am having problems with text messages on my XDA IIs.
It happens intermittantly. Sometimes SMS works fine, but most of the time it does not.
It is sending messages that are shorter then 160characters using multiple texts.
Most of the time, when you begin writing the text, it says at the bottom 0/160. But once you hit around 70, it says something like 71/70 (2 Messages), and then so on. A Full 160 character text uses, like 3 or 4 messages.
When I send these, my girlfriend reports never receiving the other parts to the text, and only the first 70 characters, and a friend of mine says he receives them all seperately.
This is very annoying. Occasionally, it comes up 0/70 at the bottom. I'm close to smashing the phone up because of this - good job I have insurance eh?
Any ideas....?
By the way, I'm new around here. Nice site by the way!
Hmm... could a Mod move this to the Blue Angel forum, I appear to have posted by mistake in the General Forum...
Sorry guys...
What language is your blue angel set up in ?
Inbox --> Accounts --> Accounts --> SMS --> "Send SMS messegages using Unicode when necessary"
On or Off?
Unicode messages gives about 70 characters..
It enables you to send funny looking characters, but fewer of them..
Yeah, that's where I was going with the language thing.
I assumed that there must be some charaters being used that could only be encoded using two bytes
You are ok woth a lot of international characters but ©, ® and æ for instance will put you in unicode territory.
Unicode...
I can type 160x "æ" pr SMS...
This is native language for me though..
(NO! I don't go around saying "ææææææ" all day..)
My suggestion:
Disable the unicode thingy and try typing æ, ø, å, ©, ® and stuff..
Does the 2s have the intellipad text entry system like on the 2i?
I've noticed this when trying to use it on the XDA2 and it had the same issue, only once I'd removed Intellipad from the 2003SE install did the problem go away.
As far as I know it's a bug that MS / O2 are aware of, in the meantime you'll just have to a) not use apostrophe punctuation or b) use the " ' " on the keyboard / use Intellipad WITH the "1" button to put in the punctuation.
Cheers
Ant
sorted ive turned off the unicode and now when the apostrophe puts its self in there it doesnt go to 7 messages like it has been doing wrote a 145 character text the other day and it was showing as 9 messages because of all the punctuation took it out and back to 1 ,no need to do that now punctuation works fine
thanks Bonzo i carnt tell u how much this has been buggin me lol

Contacts "File AS field"

I used to modify my Contacts "File As" field (First Name First) from my outlook in my Pc.. So,

Dear Vijay,
Can we file two mobile nos for a single contact? assume that all other fields viz home1.2, Work1.2 etc are already occupied
hdubli - if all available number fields are full, then not easily. If you need that many telephone numbers, you could write a custom plugin or app that would store a string of telephone numbers in a text string with a seperator, eg:
+44 7870 XXX | +359 12345 | +69 546
etc. Then, save that text string in a relatively unused number or text field (eg Home Fax?) in Pocket Outlook, and have your custom plugin present an interface to choose which number from the string to dial/select, eg dial second number in the list. Your app would then parse out the second number from the list.
That would work and be relatively operating system consistent. But, it would have to be a custom written app.

Thanks for the reply,
Is it possible that I store the Phone nos with the sepertors as informed above and dial from contacts? You know any app else can u make such app...I am not good in coding as u are..
hdubli - I've never seen an app that can do it, and a custom plugin would have to be written to dial from contacts in this way.
I could possibly write it, but it would take time I don't have right now - do you really have that many phone numbers to store per contact?
If you've hit the limit (9 phone numbers per contact I think), try saving the contact twice, eg
Vijay (1) with 9 contact numbers
Vijay (2) with another 9 contact numbers = 18
It's not perfect, but it's easier for me

That's right...Just tell me can we add a custom field in the Outlook so that when we sync it adds that field in our device...
So this important 'FileAs' omission has been a problem for about 2.5 years, yet MS still haven't had the time to fix it? I am impressed
Yup, fileas is a pain in the ass, as with many of the problems with Windows Mobile and Smartphone: however, I guess we basically have to live with the problems. I lose count of how many bugs have never been fixed.
Oh, hdubli sorry for the slow response. As far as I know, we can't add custom Pocket Outlook fields.

It's so a shame that more 4 years have passed and there's no solution for this yet that I had to ressurrect this old, old thread.
Now in WM 6.1 there's still no default setting for 'File as' contacts. Plus I also have to complain about how WM phones display area codes.
It annoys me a lot because all these default settings seem to be made for U.S., but in most other places we choose to remember the first name and not the family name of our friends, and also 3-digit area codes don't apply.
This will fix them all at once... found it floating around
finally
works great!! (may need restart)
install
programs >> contact fix
set it as you like
done
BIG thanks (searched for a way to resolve this problem, weeks)

Click to collapse
The |last name, first name| filing was probably used for business purposes. You would have many contacts that are not necessarily your friends and you would look them up by last name.
Would be nice to change it...

"active" and "passive" phone numbers?

kinda stupid title, i know. i can't think of a better one right now.
anyways...
i often get calls from contacts who call from their friends house or their work. i know i'll never call these numbers, but i don't want to add them to my contacts because ill get confused over all the numbers.
what i want is a program that allows me to add numbers so i see who is (probably) calling, without the number appearing in my contact list.
any idea someone?
thanks and sorry for bad english and horrible title
Use the company name field and prefix the name with ALT
i.e.
ALT Fred James at Sally Smith's
The company name field will come up on the CID when the first and last names are empty.

recipient names in SMS and email !?!

I have a small problem with the touch pro..
in my contacts i have several contacts with the same first name but different last names.
in my TyTnII, when writing an SMS or email, in the to: space i used to write the first two characters of the first name, space then one or two of the last name then i usually get the required contact.
in teh Touch pro, it's different, i write the two letters from the first name, it doesn't show all the contacts with the same first name.
when i put space it chooses the name displayed, it doesn't give me the chance to enter the second name.
this is really irritating me.
do you have a solution for this?
You know that you can use the arrows on either side of the one it finds first so you can scroll through the rest, right?
Not quite what you're wanting, but you didn't mention it, so, just in case!
this is exactly what I'm doing, but it doesn't show all the contacts...
that's why i have to find a way to enter the second name.
start typing with th last name, not the first.
this works for me
hmmm...
starting by second name was OK for some names, but it does no good when there's a contact who's first name is the same like another contact's second name.... (seems complex now)
it directly chooses the first one!!
i guess if someone has the CAB file for the messaging software same as TyTnII, it would be the ultimate solution for me.
can anyone help please?
Maybe I'm naive and unknowledgable on this, but wouldn't something like this be something to put forward to HTC support? They most likely will not solve it for you right away, but at least they would have a record of this being an issue and might rethink the software and give the user an option between which selection method is used.
If you tap on the "To:" it brings up the contacts app and you can browse for and select your intended recipient from there.
Hope that helps
I accidentally discovered a solution!!
after writing the first couple of letters of the first name, then CTRL+SPACE, then the first letters of the last name....
CTLR was the trick... as SPACE alone would choose the first displayed name.
thanks all for helping.
I have contacts with the same format as yours. I usually type the first two or three letters of the first name, then use the down arrow on the QWERTY. I haven't tried the virtual keyboard yet, but sure the D-pad would work in the same fashion.
FYI for those with similiar issues. It does only reflect one name at a time, but does let you scroll the contact list.

Manila 2.5 favourite contacts!

I think I know the answer to this already, and if I'm right, it's a bit pap!
The Favourites tab in Manila 2.5 allows you to add contacts there, as per previous versions of Manila. The problem I have is that you can't just add a person. You have to add a contact method for a person.
For example, I add my mate Chris, but I sometimes call him, sometimes text him, and sometimes email him. In order to create a shortcut where I can do these things, I need to create one for each of them, and therefore have 3 shortcuts for 1 person.
I've really looked round to see if there are any settings that could change this crappy behaviour, but as far as I can see, it's just poo.
Anyone got any words of wisdom on this matter?
I'm not a fan of this little feature either, but the way I get deal with it is by tapping the NAME of the contact, not the contact picture. this will take you to the contact's info (i.e. the unified communications screen you normally get after selecting a contact) from there you'll be able to email/call/text them
