"active" and "passive" phone numbers? - General Topics

kinda stupid title, i know. i can't think of a better one right now.
anyways...
i often get calls from contacts who call from their friends house or their work. i know i'll never call these numbers, but i don't want to add them to my contacts because ill get confused over all the numbers.
what i want is a program that allows me to add numbers so i see who is (probably) calling, without the number appearing in my contact list.
any idea someone?
thanks and sorry for bad english and horrible title

Use the company name field and prefix the name with ALT
i.e.
ALT Fred James at Sally Smith's
The company name field will come up on the CID when the first and last names are empty.

Saving a new number

Say a person that is not in my contact list calls me on my XDA, although I can see the number in the phone application, I cannot just copy it or easily create a new contact using the number unless I write it down on paper first, a bit of an oversight by MS or am I missing something?
you can do it by going into call history and pressing and holding with the stylus on the number you want to save.
J
And what to do if I want to add the number to an existing contact?
Is there a solution?
Thanks in advance for the answer,
Uros
Think you are stuck unless there is some third party software that can do it.
Hi all,
@Urosh:
Just create a new contact the way junglejim discribed, open this new contact, mark the number, press and hold pen, copy the phone number to the other contact. Thats all. Without using a paper to write the number down.
Perhaps it is a long way to get there, but it works.
Greetings, Kaputter
How about; press-and-hold, then select 'send sms', then copy from 'to' field into your existing contact.
Still a bit long, but getting there!

recipient names in SMS and email !?!

I have a small problem with the touch pro..
in my contacts i have several contacts with the same first name but different last names.
in my TyTnII, when writing an SMS or email, in the to: space i used to write the first two characters of the first name, space then one or two of the last name then i usually get the required contact.
in teh Touch pro, it's different, i write the two letters from the first name, it doesn't show all the contacts with the same first name.
when i put space it chooses the name displayed, it doesn't give me the chance to enter the second name.
this is really irritating me.
do you have a solution for this?
You know that you can use the arrows on either side of the one it finds first so you can scroll through the rest, right?
Not quite what you're wanting, but you didn't mention it, so, just in case!
this is exactly what I'm doing, but it doesn't show all the contacts...
that's why i have to find a way to enter the second name.
start typing with th last name, not the first.
this works for me
hmmm...
starting by second name was OK for some names, but it does no good when there's a contact who's first name is the same like another contact's second name.... (seems complex now)
it directly chooses the first one!!
i guess if someone has the CAB file for the messaging software same as TyTnII, it would be the ultimate solution for me.
can anyone help please?
Maybe I'm naive and unknowledgable on this, but wouldn't something like this be something to put forward to HTC support? They most likely will not solve it for you right away, but at least they would have a record of this being an issue and might rethink the software and give the user an option between which selection method is used.
If you tap on the "To:" it brings up the contacts app and you can browse for and select your intended recipient from there.
Hope that helps
I accidentally discovered a solution!!
after writing the first couple of letters of the first name, then CTRL+SPACE, then the first letters of the last name....
CTLR was the trick... as SPACE alone would choose the first displayed name.
thanks all for helping.
I have contacts with the same format as yours. I usually type the first two or three letters of the first name, then use the down arrow on the QWERTY. I haven't tried the virtual keyboard yet, but sure the D-pad would work in the same fashion.
FYI for those with similiar issues. It does only reflect one name at a time, but does let you scroll the contact list.

Wildcard in caller ID

Is it possible to have wildcard in caller ID?
The questions is, our company has around 100 outgoing lines, all of them look like this: +1(321)123-45xx, the xx means any number from 00~99. Whenever anyone call out from inside company, the PBX system will call out using anyone of available numbers within the range.
So, on the cell phone side, I want to match all above 100 numbers to my company's name (by add it in Contact), that means no matter which number people calling from our company, the Caller ID screen always display our Company name, instead of the number only.
Of course I could enter all those 100 numbers into several Contact entries, all of them with my company name, however, my clients' companies also use same technique, and it's not practical to create multiple contact entries for multiple companies!
Thus, is it possible to introduce some "Wildcard" into the caller ID mechanism? like +1(321)123-45** in the phone entry, then anything number from this range of number will display the same name?
Is there a program or setting for Android?
Thanks in advance!
Not sure of any native way, but you can see if a phonebook app will let you do it. There is an app called phonebook 2.0 which is kinda nice, not sure if it allows it though. This is a good idea for an app though, it could intercept calls and feed it to the incoming call screen, might delay you receiving calls, however.
still no news on this?
I'm very interested in this topic, especially because I am getting quite a few ad-calls from similar numbers.
I am surprised this is not implemented yet.
I am also interested in this. I have been searching around the internet for a solution but I haven't found any solution. Anyone figure out how to add a range of phone numbers to a single contact without having to add every number manually?
Very good idea. Someone solved it?

Multiple Contact numbers

So im having an issue, when i type a contacts name in SMS, it brings up all their numbers, home, work, mobile
Is there a fix for this??
Cheers,
I donĀ“t think so. A workaround is create a contact to each number. Like steve mobile, steve home, and so on.
Try setting the number you want as the person's default contact number. That might help. Otherwise, you can just type in the first few digits of the number and it'll figure out the rest for you.
Thanks,
I like to have all my contacts with their numbers consolidated, but it looks like a google bug (coming from a Desire HD) im pretty sure HTC sense never displayed home or work numbers :S
Ohwell i will deal with it.. for now..
cheers
Some SMS apps (such as Go SMS or HandCent) have a tick box option in the settings to 'show mobile numbers only'.

Numbers showing up Next to Contact Names

While I don't think this is a bug, it's a huge annoyance nonetheless and if there is a fix I want to know how to get rid of it.
Next to many of my contacts, when I go to text, their names are shown as "XXX XXXXX (M ###-###-####):" with their number being where the # is. And I am curious as to what is causing this. It only occurs in some, but not all. I'm thinking it's an issue with syncing my contacts with facebook, as the ones who lack facebook pictures don't have this. It's not a big deal, but I just want to know their name, not their number. I already (obviously) have that.
the ones with just the name means you only have 1 number for that contact & nothing else. If you have more than 1 number or even an email address listed, you'll get it where it shows the number.
This is so that you know which number the text came from. your reply will go to the last number that text you.
