Iphone-developers.com? - General Topics

I was just wondering...and have wondered loud with this thread.
I have been a member of this forum for couple of years now and have gained immensely from the good guys who are ready to develop stuff. But I now have 2 iphones. 3g and 3gs which is my main phone now, (although still have WM Athena ). And me too, its becoming increasingly the case that I find myself looking elswhere for support, just feel strange as I've always ever come to xda-developers to get what-the-manufacturers-left-out. also I just read a post from Confucious on Athena forum saying that he has not come here for a while because he's busy with iphone forums.
I just was going to suggest an iphone-developers.com to xda-developers, before I do that, I decided to type it in the browser, guess what happened? it led back to xda-developers.com, so is something cooking, are we to expect a separate part of this site for iphone soon?
Waiting!!!!!!

Go to the apple forums.

Try modmyi.com.
It is an excellent support site for tweaks, software support, application requests, and technical tips sharing.

What he mean is that if You typ in browser www.iphone-developers.com it actually opens www.xda-developers.com

They'll need to buy an HTC to access the site.

:screaming::screaming::screaming::screaming:

I can t believe what I´m reading!!!

Yeah I cringe at the thought, I don't like iPhone mixing with anything similar to (HTC) Windows Mobile's GSM pride & joy...
Let them hang with the jailbreakers...

Yes, I meant when you type in www.iphone-developers.com you find yourself at xda-developers.com, if there is no intention to support iphone, why register the domain for it? that's why I think something might be cooking.
And so that I am not misunderstood, I still love my WM devices...used about 10 of them in the past 7 years. But boy! did iphone spring a surprise? the ease of use, the interface, the apps...the apps!
But I still love my WM devices.

Interesting. Perhaps the work of a typical iPhone hater and WM/HTC fanatic?

A sign of the Apocalypse?

awesome!
now all we need is

I would also like to see forums for non HTC WM devices.
Stupid that they don't exist already!

There are plenty forums for non HTC devices, here one example:
winmodevs
On this site, as stated countless times before, there won´t be any special section for non HTC devices!, that´s the Admin position wich I support.

WINDOWS MOBILE 6 - UPGRADE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (for the non Genius Univ. owners)

Listen Family,
I know most of everyone on here is super smart and tech savvy. But for the non-genius, run-of-the-mill Universal owners like myself, (i have had the O2 XDA Exec for about 1 year now) we need straight to the point answers, put in layman's terms. I have 2 quick questions:
1. Is there an Upgrade to WM6 for the Universal that wont have any problems? Or does Microsoft just want you to get a new device every time they drop a new OS? If so, screw Billy Gates.
2. Is there a clear, concise, step by step, post anywhere in this labyrinth of super tech terminology and Programmer code mumbo jumbo, that actually walks a person through getting rid of WM5 and Uploading WM6 without destroying the 1000 dollar PDA?
words to keep in mind: User Friendly
I don't care if you put a PayPal button in your post and charge 20 bucks for the directions, I just need something simple and to the point. If this type of solution doesn't exist, forgive me for my frustration. I just really don't have the time to comb the site or the web to find the solution. And yes, I've checked out wik section of the site.
Thanks fam...forgive the outbursts...LOL
Go to the WIKI, all is revealed there.
Hi,
1. There is no WM6 release for the Universal without problems. Most ROM's won't include videocall, some lack some applications, some have problems with i.e. MMS, while others have problems with i.e. flash cards.
I have been using Jwrightmcps' ROM's and do like them a lot. Actually, the first thing I did, when my Universal arrived, was to install his WM6 ROM.
Videocall is not available, but then I wouldn't have used it anyway, as my SIM is paif by the company I work for and they don't pay for videocalls.
All the rest works as good or better than the original WM5 ROM, which had it's own problems.
2. The Wiki is quite good. If you don't do anything stupid, the process is fairly easy: a) syncronize with Outlook through ActivSync, b) run the upgrade installer, c) follow the instructions, d) press the mentioned buttons for the final reset, e) install ActiveSync 4.5, f) synchronize again.
Most common problem is that the installer won't flash your phone on the first run and the phone won't boot anymore. Just try again. Hold your phone against a lightsource and you will notice that the word SERIAL is written on the screen - it will still contect through the USB cable.
All of this and more is described in the wiki. You WILL have to spend 1-2 hours reading it. Believe me, it is worth it! Failing to do so, COULD HARM your phone, as there are a few things you could do to break it...
Otherwise it is very easy to upgrade the phone.
Cheers,
vma

And there never will be. Because, when we get close, WM6.1 then WM7 will be released and WM6 will be forgotten.

Microsoft offered all the device manufacturers free upgrades from WM5 to WM6 - HTC just refused to make a WM6 ROM for the Universal. SO don't blame Bill Gates, blame Peter Chou (CEO of HTC)

The closest thing you have is the wiki.
My final note: Upgrading to an unofficial ROM can screw up your device and will void your warranty

1) As said previously, there is no single best ROM yet. Jason Wright's ROM is pretty nice and stable. Go for Mo3ulla's ROM if you want no additional apps installed. Go for Beasty and Leo's ROM if you want juiced up UI and nicely enhanced functionality (not perfect though).
2) Here's (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Uni_ROM_Upgrade) how to upgrade your ROM. I've been following this procedure since before i wrote this wiki and my PDA's upgrading great! Just follow the instructions line be line and you'll be great!
Now, where's my 20 bucks??!?

Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a secretive firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realized that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
Forgive me Penguin, but I thought I was welcome here....but you're probably right....I shouldn't be on a developers site...Thanks for lookin out for the little guy!
Oh, and thanks to everyone that responded. Your answers were clear and concise. Now we may move forward amicably..lol

Sorry if I offended you
But, you must look at things from the developers perspectives. There are a lot of people on these forums looking for a "quick fix" and believing that they are getting 100% tried, tested and production quality software\advice from these forums. This is false. The ROMs on these forums are beta software, and tend to forgo niceties of user-friendliness (but instead pack features and performance).
If you're the sort of person who is willing to read the Wiki, search the forums and post useful comments (eg. "Here is my opinion on the ROM....") then I welcome you to the forum with open arms.

HTC S640(IRIS) Forum Protest!

I think i speak for many other users out there, there has been a topic about this already but has been lost in the depths of the "general" forum.
I think it's time for this site to support us HTC S640 (Iris) users and make us a forum please.
This is a site devoted to HTC phones, why not include this one as well?
our phones are quite similar to other smartphones, but it would be nice for a place that WE can hang out in
If anyone is with me, keep this thread alive
I'm hoping there are others who agree with me as well!!!!
give is a forum pretty please
It appears they are as willing and just as slow as HTC is for developing fixes for things... This phone is weeks old already.

BUMP!
The Iris is (obviously) just a natural progression from the S620/S630. Great phone, with more ROM, thus more opportunity for modification. I'd love to see the Iris acknowledged as a legitimate part of the HTC family. I used ROMs from this site on my PPC-6700/Apache and they worked great & allowed all sorts of extra/new functionality that was limited by the stale OS that it was shipped with.
I'd be interested in seeing what could be done about the lack of network file share support in the particular version of WM6 these smartphones come with. It would be great to be able to stream music/movies/etc across my WLAN like I used to with my 6700.
orb.com works great.

Our Little World

i know this is not the place for this, i dont even know why am i doing this, but i felt the need to say it: as imperfect as it is, with all our noobs, experienced users, rom cooking just for the fun of it, donations (hell, smb was willing to donate even a whole kaiser!!), advices for free, fun all around, helpful persons willing to help just because we share a common passion...
... all these mean so much to me and in my eyes they are a lot more beautiful than the world we see everyday.
dont know exactly why i had to say this, but please go on and keep it as such. also, thanks to all of you for putting your little brick at the foundation of a beautiful building!
as smb was saying in another post, love is in the air... maybe its the spring...
Although it's a bit twee, I have to agree.
The concept of developers & users sharing ideas and code and actually HELPING each other in return for donations to the level you can afford is a fantastic concept - and one that Microsoft would do well to learn from (amongst others).
The end result is everyone is MUCH happier and the product is much better. The only problem is I suspect nobody on here could make a living from it...
I'm feeling all teary eyed now. But you guys & gals are right. Group hug.
Let's all sing together now.
Koom By Ya...... why am I the only one singing?
Sorry....
I was too busy reaching for the kleenex box
hehe... bunch of nerds... really!!... get all hot and flustered at the idea of a new rom or some cab file... it's so sweet...

now on singing kombaya i need some body to give me a beat ...
its not even about money or anything, its about people. just hearing that laurentius spent one whole day (9am - 12pm) to tweak a new rom for us, for you, for anybody, made me think that passion is everything, or anyway a lot more than what people are forced to do for a living.
ive been reading this forum for over 2 years now and remember a lot of things, funny posts, things that, together with the great pieces of software developed, made my day now and then. thank ya all for this!
as you say, this is a silly thread and should under no circumstances stay especially here under the rom development section. kyphur, related to a discussion from laurentius new diamond rom thread, feel free to delete all these.

Agreed, if I were head of marketing for HTC I would pay Dutty (amongst others) to continue cooking roms for our devices.
OMG, sensitive nerds! *turns around and sneaks away*
Just to also add few thoughts on this forum.
This year I bought my first ever PDA, and had to go to considerable trouble to have it delivered here. In a country where the concept of customer support is not yet in existence, and with thousand noob questions, this forum has provided all the help that I needed. So, this forum means a lot to people like me who have no access to official customer support services or other facilities available elsewhere.
My only regret is that as yet, I am unable to more actively contribute to the great community here.
Thanks XDA developers and keep it up.

Why only HTC ?

Greetings !
After evaluating my options, I decided to go with HTC FUZE a week ago. So far I find that the phone is one of the most feature rich phones in the market.
However, slide out keyboard and small screens are two big cons for me.
I was wondering why there is such a big "cooked ROM" community only for HTC and not for other Win Mobiles, like Samsung or Moto ?
One tends to think the HTC company could be sponsering sites such as this as a marketting tool . Am I crazy to think in those terms ?
why only windows mobile phone why not all phones?
a private website where one have to pay for space
and pay for how much presure is being put on by many users
limitations have to be considered
guess one reason why htc is picked is because much tools and such can be reused
and roms and how they are flashed don't differ as much as other phones which also
use wm but use a whole different way to flash and how the whole memorymap of the rom is made
Maybe im wrong, but if you check the name of the site
XDA-Developers
then you may work out the reason.
Back in the day when everyone was happy to do stuff for free this site accomodated the XDA brand of PDA phones, these were obviously O2 branded devices, at the time O2 only used HTC devices for its XDA line
Hence the reason for a massive HTC based community.
There are other devices that are supported on here to a degree but I am curious as to what defines a device thats is supported, because generally speaking you are right, they are HTC based devices.
This will be moved to the General section.

lol.
I am curious however, at what point did "XDA" - Developers decide not to support all the WM XDA devices, im not faning any flames or anything im just intrested in knowing when this decision was made, after all the site does suggest it was originally for XDA branded devices otherwise it might have been HTC-Developers so at some point during its growth the decision was made not to support other devices.
More intrestingly since the XDA Zest was only released a few months ago it would have been at a time when as far as i'm aware all XDA devices were HTC anyway so the name justification would have standed....
Just curious...
The HTC gives money to host this, and stuff to do roms, just so HTC had a huge advantage over Samsung or others. My little conspiracy theory.

What happened to XDA?

I realize this isn't the most correct place to post this, but apparently, everyone should read this.
I've been involved with the xda modding community for over 4 years. When I came to xda-devs, the iphone didn't exist. Android didn't exist. WebOS didn't exist. If you wanted a "smart phone" your choices were PalmOS, Pocket PC, and a few Symbian based offerings. It's quite possible that the expense and, for lack of a better word, elitism that went with these smart phones meant that "commoners" weren't using them. Especially, they weren't modding them.
In those days, devs were respected. There certainly wasn't this big entitlement feeling that every tom, ****, and harry feel they are owed today. This site was started and grew based on people wanting to develop for these phones. We wanted them to do more. For the most part, if you didn't have anything to contribute, you understood to stfu. Even more important, if you saw a need, you worked to fill it. Many of the guys that started this community STARTED learning because of it. Sure, you'll have questions. Questions are good. The flaming of each other, the putting down of other sites, and the general dickery needs to stop.
It's sad that I look at xda with disdain these days. XDA has gone from a site that I spent most of my day on, and worked to assist where I could, to a necessary evil because I own an HTC device.
I'm thankful to all of the Android devs for their work in rooting so many phones. Thank you HTC for making a phone that works so well, I'm not completely sure I need or want to root it. Thank you XDA for providing a location where we can COLLABORATE.
To all of you kids (either by age or maturity) look up the definition of collaborate, patience, and "common decency"). Please stop being rude, and or demanding... anything. We don't need 30 extra posts to tell us "I'm Not Happy about X" or "User Y is a dork". It's useless. Put it on your myspace page, people may care there.
And to the elitists, don't knock people for thinking of an idea that someone else already tried. At least they are thinking. At least they are trying. And hopefully, they'll learn and take on the next challenge in your stead.

Stick around and it'll happen a bunch more. People make mistakes, hello! We had several overclocking threads that were false starts in G1/Dream. Guess what? Simply because this is where XDA lost face in the eyes of many yesterday. Its not just the sites fault though. Members had a lot to do with it. I'm sure because yesterday was a holiday is the reason it took some time for the Mods to get a handle on things.

I think it is very important to understand where xda came from. This site began with people that not only helped us mod our phones, but were willing to teach us to mod our phones. That way, when the next phone came out, you had more people working to mod the phone.
I put this in a developer thread because development is a large driving force behind xda.

People need to learn to just report a thread instead of fighting over what's posted in it. Mods will help sort things out I'm sure. We all need to just work together on making this site better and learn from the mistakes of others. The Incredible's development will get better in time its a fairly new device if you think about it. IMO its very nice stock. Keep up the great work Devs and for those who don't dev do your part in making this site a place for ppl to want to come to share and learn.

I realize this isn't the most correct place to post this, but apparently, everyone should read this.
I've been involved with the xda modding community for over 4 years. When ...

Although I have not really posted here much, I have been around since the Palm Treo 650 days (loved that damn phone btw) and have always had a deep sense of respect for all the developers here who dedicate their time and efforts to making a smartphone more powerful and more useful outside the stock features. Being a member of the iPhone community for so long, I have had no reason to come to these forums for quite a while so I've been out of the loop. Now that I own a droid incredible, I was led back here by a simple "how-to-root your android" Google search. Since that time, I have seen a lot of commotion about the Incredible.
I am not and never will be able to develop, write code, or become a linux genius. I have been a linux admin for years, but never had a need or want to go into development. That being said, I have always respected those who have the ability to develop software, apps, images, etc.
I think the main problem on these forums now, is too many kids and too many people who expect something to be handed to them rather than be grateful for what they are given. Then again, that's pretty much anywhere you go in the world. The only thing we can do as a community is choose how we respond to these situations. Like adults....
Thanks.

Sadly, I'm seeing these types of issues everywhere. The last 4-5 years has really created a new generation of people that think they can get away with saying whatever they want online. Think of it as the Myspace gen, if you will.
It's painful to say it, but honestly... it's not going to get any better.

Generation T, as in toilet trained below the waist only. Their mouths seem to run constantly, and not even their spell checkers have been opened . . .
It's easy to bash wee tykes. Been happening since antiquity. Hard to root an Incredible, tho. We just need somebody to get a reman unit that still has a testing bootloader installed!

....For the most part, if you didn't have anything to contribute, you understood to stfu. Even more important, if you saw a need, you worked to fill it. Many of the guys that started this community STARTED learning because of it. Sure, you'll have questions. Questions are good.

Exactly right... And I'm one of those who kept my mouth shut as I read and learned here, respecting those who put forth the info that helped me...

....The flaming of each other, the putting down of other sites, and the general dickery needs to stop.
It's sad that I look at xda with disdain these days. XDA has gone from a site that I spent most of my day on, and worked to assist where I could, to a necessary evil because I own an HTC device.

I can say the same about Hofo (on which I go by a different name..)
I started there, reading, absorbing, learning.. To pay it back, I started helping others when/where I could. I eventually started a collection of instructions, and writing up info I digested to make it easier for new people to just dive in and learn to do it themselves. I even met (in person) someone I met on hofo, and we worked to create a set of repeatable processes to flash moto phones with non-VZW firmware.
I saw it go from a great site to learn, to a place you're going to get flamed, called names, disrespected, etc... Thankfully, the birth of my son took me away from my cell phone hacking and Hofo just at the right time.
As I visit this, hofo and other sites, I can't help but think they are all becoming the same... a bunch of people who feel entitled to have this or that NOW and if they don't get it, they gripe up a storm about it, call people names, etc..
Its sad.
Is it really getting that bad? I haven't signed into this site since my old PPC6700 days, so I haven't taken a look at the Entitled Generation posts, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out.

AMEN ! NOOBs need to read and research more rather than demanding everything be handed to them.
I think this thread is a bit dramatic. "What happened to XDA?" Well, nothing really. There's just a huge influx of new people who know just enough to be dangerous and really want root (and look at the average post count, mine is low enough but every other person I see discussing this has less than 20 posts). The Incredible is one of if not THE hot phone on the market, so I'm not surprised it's like a circus in here. Due to recent events that I will not dare mention, It's like the scene in Caddyshack when they let all the caddys swim in the pool and run all the "members" off. And over the weekend someone took a dump in the pool and caused mayhem/panic...
If the mods would get more strict - short temp bans for people who are very rude, and maybe also for people who can't stay on subject or at least delete the off subject posts, and get rid of all the "why is my battery life bad" threads then the Dev section may improve. Perhaps make a rule that says you can't post in this section unless you have a certain number of posts? I don't know. It was just a bad weekend. It will get back to normal.
